Flags Taken From Soldier Memorial Honoring Those Killed in War on Terror

Police are investigating the theft of several flags from Kentucky's Healing Field, honoring the state's service members killed in the War on Terror. (Photo credit: Kentucky American Legion Auxillary)
Several American flags were taken from a Kentucky soldier memorial in what police are investigating as a possible theft.
The “Healing Field” in Lawrenceville, Ky. started five years ago and contains 103 flag poles, each holding an American flag — one for each Kentucky service member killed in battle since the Sept. 11 attacks.
Shirley Thornberry, a member of the committee that maintains the Healing Field, told Lexington’s WKYT-TV she noticed the missing flags Wednesday morning.
“I noticed the ropes were hanging down, loose,” Thornberry said. “The flags were missing.”
Nettie Halvorson was also one of the ones who noticed several of the flags were gone from the memorial site.
“I tried to think of who in the world would need a flag so badly that they’d steal it. If they wanted one, they could have asked,” Halvorson said.
Members of American Legion Post 34 have run up new flags to replace those that had been taken.
“It’s very heart wrenching to know that we have a memorial this sacred, that anyone would take flags off of the flag poles,” Pam Rice, vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary told the station.
Halvorson said that when she watched the replacement flags being raised, she thought to herself, “Thank you, God, those boys aren’t forgotten.”

Posted on September 30, 2011 at 1:16pmHad a “Field of Flags ” set up in our town this summer. It was manned around the clock. Thank goodness it was, had vandals try the same crap and two gentlemen nailed them and called the cops. Some folks have no respect at all anymore.

It is time for some of us old vets to come back on the line in defense of our country. If we have one in my area, I am going to volunteer.

The punks / terrorist / rats will probdbly show up in darkness. There are many old vets like you and me that would quietly guard the hallowed grounds. The moment any vandalism begins, kick their sorry little butts and hold them for the police. Make sure it makes the local news. Your local Sheriff would probably deputize the guards to help cover your rear ends. Our Fighting Men and Women deserve to be honored. Thanks Kentucky for honoring our veterans and their families.

He was a military brother and friend and I will remember him till we meet on fidlers green. The punks that took the flags can burn in hell. Never Forget!

missing. I would take them to the Middle East and turn them loose. No shoes to protect from
the hot sand, no head covering to protect the head, no food, no water,and a torn Koran in their
pocket.Then report to the Musliims I saw someone destroying the Koran and point them in their
direction. The fools will never get punished for destroying something we hold sacred but I would
bet he would be punished there for something they hold sacred.
That is about the only punishment I can think appropriate for some fool that did this. He or they
could then see what our soldiers fight against so they have freedoms.The USA would never do
any thing to them, but I bet the Muslims would. Let them find the Koran torn and abused and
maybe they would exact the punishment.
This just really irks me.
