‘Flamboyantly Gay Pastors’ Are Trying to Take the Word ‘Gay’ & Rainbows Back From the LBGT Community

Pastor Ken Hutcherson & James Jansen Talk About Being Gay | Rainbow

Pastor Ken Hutcherson of Antioch Bible Church in Redmond, Washington, has come “out of the closet” to share a message: He’s “gay” and he wants the whole world to know it.

Now, I know what you’re thinking — Hutcherson, a former NFL linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, is referencing his views on sexuality. But this isn’t the case. Instead, the heterosexual preacher is talking about attitude. Recently, he made some interesting statements about reclaiming the word “gay” from the LGBT community (i.e. their definition of “gay” is “happy”).

Rather than serving as a word used to describe sexual preference, Hutcherson hopes that it will return to its roots of being a descriptive for “happy” or “joyous.” So he took to his church‘s web site along with fellow Pastor James Hansen to publish an article that delves into what he’s hoping to accomplish.

The introduction to their article reads as though it is coming from someone who is discussing his or her experience “coming out” as gay:

Coming out of the closet is a difficult decision to make, especially when close, personal relationships are at stake.  Will my family abandon me?  Will my friends still look at me the same?  Will this announcement be worth the risk?  These are indeed valid concerns that can make a person live like a double agent for years.  And even though this decision is acutely personal, it does help to stand along side someone else who is ready to announce the very same thing.  It is a shared declaration.  Coming out may be a personal choice, but doing it with someone you love somehow feels so right.  It is with this spirit of unity that Pastor Ken Hutcherson and his ministerial partner, James Hansen, would like to shout loud and proud, “We are gay!”

The article goes on to leave the reader questioning what, exactly, this definition of “gayness” really means. “Hold a gaydar up to either of us and it’s likely to read “Fabulous!,” the pastors write. Gay rights activist Dan Savage, too, is discussed, as the faith leaders maintain that he “claims to be gay,“ but that ”he’s not.”

Instead, they characterize him as an “agitator who happens to be homosexual.“ Hutcherson and Hansen even extend an invitation to Savage to come to their office so they can show him how to truly be ”gay.” Christians, the pastors maintain, are the true members of “the gay community.” They continue:

…why should disagreement imply hatred?  Isn’t it just a difference of opinion in the marketplace of ideas?  We remember a time when love meant that we cared so deeply about another person that we would tell them the truth about their destructive lifestyle.  After all, a mom didn’t warn her kids about the hot stove out of malice.  But try doing that today with children raised on tolerance’s pablum and they’re likely to sue her for reckless maternal insensitivity.  Ah, progress.

Maybe some of these changes need to be changed.  For instance, we’ve been thinking a lot about changing our culture’s perception of that colorful reminder of God’s love…the rainbow.  Recently, I (Ken) put out an article about taking the rainbow back for God.  We’ve heard from many of you asking how, in practical ways, this can be done.  It’s simple.  Find anything with a rainbow on it and display it.  Get a rainbow tie and wear it.  Get a rainbow sticker and put it on your car.  Rainbow umbrellas, rainbow scarves, rainbow wigs, the possibilities are endless.  You can even contact us and we’ll send you a rainbow pin.  Then, when you’re asked about it, you can let people know that the rainbow is God’s loving promise to never again destroy the entire world by a flood.  And when you’re there…the Gospel is waiting to be shared just around the corner.

Pastor Ken Hutcherson & James Jansen Talk About Being Gay | Rainbow

The “flamboyantly gay pastors” encouraged Christians to let the world see their joy. Rather than remain apathetic, Hutcherson and Hansen are encouraging believers to have active involvement in the world and to “stop hiding.” In the end, it seems they’re bent on taking back some of the words and symbols that are now used by homosexuals.

While some may support these efforts, others — particularly those in the LBGT community — will likely see them as inflammatory and unneeded. Let us know what you think in the comments section, below.

    Whew! I can now again comfortably sing one of my favorite Christmas carols that includes,”don we now our gay apparel, fa-la-la-la-la-la- la- la- la” The left has been very successful in hi-jacking our language in the name of political correctness, maybe this is a start in the other direction. I admit, I almost didn‘t read the article because I didn’t need my blood pressure to go through the roof! Good for those guys!

    If we are going to define gay to what it really means why cant we define homosexuality to what it really is? A perversion of nature.

      Seems like a waste of time to me. Speak the truth in love and don’t waste time trying to re-redefine a word. As for the rainbow, the last time I saw a rainbow in the sky , it had 7 colors; the LGBT ‘rainbow’ has only 6. Interesting…yet another perversion of the Truth. The rainbow is the token of a covenant God made with mankind that he would never again allow the earth to be overspread with water. Sorry Algore, yer stupid gobal warming fear about massive flooding ain’t gonna happen.

      Just a thought. Yahweh created the Bow, owns it. Gay is a word that has always meant happy. Gay(people) are some of the most unhappy people in the world. It seems to me there is nothing GAY about being a homosexual. Why don‘t they adopt the phase ’ I’m depressed, always depressed. Why can’t I be happy. I’ certainly not gay (happy,joyous).

    I find it interesting that we have nothing else to do but fret over the words we use to describe others.

    I have no idea concerning the history of the homosexual movement regarding their co-opting the rainbow or the word ‘gay’, but I’m pretty sure they are not guilty of any copyright infringement.

    That being said, I prefer the word ‘homosexual’ if needed to describe someone’s sexual preference. I believe it to be the most accurate.

    My religion teaches me that homosexuality is a sin, but we all have faults. Heavenly Father loves all of His children, therefore it is my job to love them, also.

    A person’s sexual preference is not a determining factor in my deciding to associate with another human being. One of my best friends was Steve when I met him, now she is Stephanie. What do I care? She is still a great person and trusted friend.

    Yep, whole family is gay. Kids too. They love to be gay. Sometimes it’s a complete distraction for the family. All our relatives know we are gay. I think most of the neighbors are gay in our community. I can hardly control the kids at the dinner table. Sometimes the food even gets spilled. It’s all gay in my house. We don’t display the rainbow, but I do remember the promise God made to each of us.

    No as you guessed we are not homosexuals.

      It really helps to read the article before commenting. The headline indicating that these pastors are taking the words “gay” and “rainbow” back from the gay community should have been a tip off that the pastors are not homosexual — they are making a point about the gay community co-opting the language, redefining terms, and they want to restore the word “gay” and the symbol of the rainbow to their original meanings. Why would anyone burn in hell for that???

      “On Nov. 15, the Senate Armed Services Committee had unanimously approved S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a provision to repeal Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

      Article 125 of the UCMJ makes it illegal to engage in both sodomy with humans and sex with animals.

      It states: “(a) Any person subject to this chapter who engages in unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy. Penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the offense. (b) Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

      “Pentagon officials described the changes as largely a legal housekeeping matter, because the sodomy prohibition had long ago been struck down by the Supreme Court and the bestiality prohibition was covered by other sections of the UCMJ.”

      Let me repeat that for you:
      “the bestiality prohibition was covered by other sections of the UCM”

      Specifically, article 134. This specifically applied to bestiality in US v. Sanchez, 11 C.M.A. 216, 29 C.M.R. 32 (1960), and was applied yet again in United States v. Phillips, 70 M.J. 161 (C.A.A.F. 2011).

      It is false to claim that bestiality is legal in the military now.

      Did you read the article? They are identifying as “flamboyantly gay” with the definition of “gay” being “happy” and not “homosexual.” In fact, the article makes sure to point out that neither is a homosexual. If I didn’t live in a city with more homosexuals per capita than San Fran, I might dare to wear a rainbow, but here it would just be taken as me supporting the politically active homosexuals rather than taking back God’s covenant symbol.

      I have thought about making an e-mail sig with a rainbow and Psalm 50: 16-21, but it’s kind of long and most leftists who think they are Christians would never recognize themselves in it.

      But to the wicked God says,
      “What right have you to tell of My statutes
      And to take My covenant in your mouth?
      For you hate discipline,
      And you cast My words behind you.
      When you see a thief, you are pleased with him,
      And you associate with adulterers.
      You let your mouth loose in evil
      And your tongue frames deceit.
      You sit and speak against your brother;
      You slander your own mother’s son.
      These things you have done and I kept silence;
      You thought that I was just like you;
      I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes.
