Flashback: Buzzfeed Reportedly Finds Audio of Romney Praising Fuel Efficiency Mandates

New audio has been uncovered by Buzzfeed reportedly showing Mitt Romney praising fuel efficiency mandates. And it certainly won’t help him erase the Etch-A-Sketch phenomenon.
The audio, which is said to be from a 2007 town hall meeting, features someone sounding a lot like Romney answering a question about fuel efficiency standards. It is slightly hard to hear the original question, but the man reported as Romney repeats it and says, in part, “what can you do about automotive efficiency and would you consider mandates of some kind on automotive efficiency?”
“And the answer,” he says, “is would I consider them, yeah.”
He goes on to explain that certain requirements haven’t really worked, especially because they haven’t applied to trucks and SUVs.
“I’m hopeful that with $3 gasoline being charged by Hugo Chavez, and Ahmadinejad, and Putin and others, that you’re going to see Americans slowly but surely move to vehicles that are far more fuel efficient, and you’ll see our manufactures start competing on the basis of fuel efficiency.”
“I sure hope you‘re going to see more and more hybrids and much better fuel economy because it’s a must,” he ads. “We have to make our automobiles far more fuel efficient.”
You can listen to the audio below:
The comments will certainly draw comparisons to statements by Obama’s Secretary of Energy Steven Chu said in 2008, before he was named to Obama’s cabinet. Back then, Chu said “Somehow, we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” The Wall Street Journal said that was to “coax consumers into buying more-efficient cars and living in neighborhoods closer to work.” [That's WSJ's paraphrase, not Chu's exact quote.]
But it should be noted that Chu was looking to cause the higher gas prices while the person reported to be Romney in 2007 was only hoping to piggy back on them — and the Romney plan (increased fuel efficiency) could lead to lower gas prices.
Even without the 2007 audio, some have been attacking Romney as flip-flopping on the issue.

The GOP is only running him so liberals who are dissatified with Obama will vote for Romney.
That said, as awful as Romney is – and he is BAD – very BAD – at least we have a SLIGHT CHANCE he will be FORCED to act as a conservative once in office. Obama will be off his leash if he gets a 2nd term. I am DEPRESSED/RESIGNED to having to vote for the lesser evil of Mitt Romney in November if the GOP nominates him.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 1:17pm“But it should be noted that Chu was looking to cause the higher gas prices while the person reported to be Romney in 2007 was only hoping to piggy back on them” This statements makes this a non-story, as nobody short of a complete idiot would oppose better fuel efficiency or use of alternative energy. Its one thing to endorse Santorum. Its another to manufacture something to snipe Romney about. Santorum will never get the independent vote.

Posted on March 27, 2012 at 12:44pmLameliberals…I agree with you, but I won’t vote for Romney, the turncoat or liberal leaning moderate on almost every issue. What clinched it for me was listening to him in 2002 strenuously saying he supported a woman’s right to choose. Not to mention his Romneycare…which paid for abortions. Now he’s prolife? Sorry, I won’t vote for an abortionist. Screw the GOP, I’ve had it. With 16T in debt and an out of control govt we’re going down the tubes one way or another in the next few years. It’s probably more fitting to have Obamao at the helm to reap what he has sown anyhow.
And JRook “nobody short of a complete idiot would oppose better fuel efficiency or use of alternative energy”? Nobody short of a ******* would make such a blanket statement. Government mandated or free market driven better fuel efficiency? Use of alternative energy? You mean the windmill operators being paid not to run them, or the billions being wasted on these ‘green’ failing startups? It kills me how you liberal morons just assume everyone agrees with your thinking that there is something inherently evil about oil.

Being good in business and being a conservative are completely different. That is all the article touched on was his business endevors and a little bit on his “Romneycare”
Here is one touching more on legislation as governor
http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/8529-gop-presidential-candidate-mitt-romney
Are any of the below statements conservative?
Supports NDAA
Supports Cap and trade
Supports The Patriot Act

Supports Big Taxes (Oh wait, he lowered taxes that right. Meanwhile raising every fee the government has in ther grasp)

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 12:41pm@Wakingsheep, I’m not saying Romney is perfect, but as the article stated, Romney knows how to RUN things. That’s what this country needs right now – people who know how to run things. Right now we have a bunch of incompetent, inexperience bimbos TRYING to run things on which they know nothing. I confess, I supported the Patriot Act too in the beginning, but now it seems to have gotten out of control. I don’t think he supports Big Government as you say. He consistently says that government should get out of the way and out of our lives. I believe him. Regarding taxes, if he cuts government then all their fees should be cut as well, right? Romney supports the Ryan Plan, which I feel is the best plan proposed so far. I also wouldn’t say he supports Big Wars. I think he will be wisely cautious about wars, unlike Santorum and Gingrich. Romney believes in a strong military and a strong defense, which as Reagan said is a DETERRENT to wars. Personally, I haven’t made up my mind about the assault weapon ban. I have no intentions of buying an assault weapon, therefore, it really isn’t much of a big deal to me (unless a Civil War broke out). I am willing to forgive him for Romneycare, because his explanations for it are perfectly logical, and at least he wanted the deadbeats to pay SOMETHING which is better than nothing!

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 12:46pmThe one concern that I have about Romney is his stance on Global Warming and Cap and Trade. I watched most of the debates (I think I missed 3), and was disappointed that I never heard a SINGLE question on those issues! The media has never posed that question to him, and I feel it is extremely important. This is the one issue that could possibly sway my position, however, I want to hear what his CURRENT position is on the subject (and whether he believes Global Warming is real) and I want to hear it straight from Romney’s mouth – unedited.

Report Post »“Right now we have a bunch of incompetent, inexperience bimbos TRYING to run things on which they know nothing.”
They know exactly what they are doing. It is laid out perfectly in Obamas guide “The rules for radicals”.
“I supported the Patriot Act too in the beginning, but now it seems to have gotten out of control. I don’t think he supports Big Government as you say. He consistently says that government should get out of the way and out of our lives. I believe him.”
The Patriot Act, NDAA, and the assault rifle ban are all BIG Government. Obama said a lot during his run in 2008. See how many people believed/keep believing him too? The words out of their mouths are one thing but the legislation is another.
“I also wouldn’t say he supports Big Wars. I think he will be wisely cautious about wars, unlike Santorum and Gingrich. Romney believes in a strong military and a strong defense, which as Reagan said is a DETERRENT to wars.”
Supporting 900 bases around the globe supports big wars. Other countries do not like us being in their business. That is how 9/11 came to be. It wasn’t because we are rich, it’s because we are on their lands and in their governments. That’s not only my opinion but the opinion of the CIA and 9/11 commission as well. Strong military/defense is the best and only deterrent. Our current leaders have claimed the bases all over the world as defense but they are not defending us one bit. We have been closing bases here
WakingSheep
Posted on March 26, 2012 at 1:27pmThat is not defense. That is the military industrial complex. Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum have all stated they would have no issue going to war with Iran. Stating it is in the name of defending Israel. Israel can defend themselves as they have stated.
Report Post »“I haven’t made up my mind about the assault weapon ban. I have no intentions of buying an assault weapon, therefore, it really isn’t much of a big deal to me (unless a Civil War broke out).”
The assault rifle ban is in direct contradiction to the Constitution. This right is not supposed to be infringed. The weapons not only are there to protect the individual; They are there to protect from tyranny or invasion as well. The problem with a weapon ban is; Who will be the one harmed by the laws in the first place? The Law abiding citizen or the criminal? The biggest problem is it is against the Constitution. Get rid of the 2nd amendment and we might as well scrap the whole thing.
“The one concern that I have about Romney is his stance on Global Warming and Cap and Trade.”
There is a lot at stake in this election. Global warming still has no proof that it exists. We have actually cooled down again in the past decade. The environmentalists are having issues explaining that one. Cap and trade only harms the industries. The industries will keep working to better their products and environment around them because the people can get them out at a local level. No need for big government on that one.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 1:27pmDid you know the EPA is now talking about regulating all CO² emissions? Yes your breathing.
Report Post »In conclusion:
Romney is a good businessman and I bet some of what he passed as governor he thought was for the good of the people. Intentionally or Un-intentionally though; more government always leads to more tyranny. Lemonade stands are even a thing of the past because you can’t even make lemonade and sell it to you neighbors without it being regulated. That is not the American dream I believe in. It all boils down to the Constitution. The Constitution is what allows me to post what I have stated above. There are not a lot of countries in the world that would not allow the statements I have made. Some countries would even kill me for some of the statements. There is a whole new world when they finally decided to shred the Constitution. We will no longer be individuals; we will be comrades.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 11:09amActually the article make sense as we need both. The Blaze don’t want to show negative videos about Santorum as there are many of them because they support the big spender. Talk radio are doing their best to sink Romney, a candidate who they supported in 08 because he was a true conservative. Talk about hypocrites. With the media being so anti-Mitt, it is a miracle that he has been able to withstand it. Of course, people do not trust the media anymore with their rhetoric.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdBz5z6Z4Vo
One of the criticisms I make is to what I refer to as more of a libertarianish right. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. That is not how traditional conservatives view the world. There is no such society that I am aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture. -Rick Santorum-
Isn’t the Constitution all about the INDIVIDUAL and not about big government? hmmmm……

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 9:26amBetween the Trolls who write their “ Divide the Dumb Conservative” comments here on the Blaze and the knowledge that Far Left media groups like Buzzfeed are going to fill the media with Big Lies and Democrat Deception, guess it’s going to be a long slog ahead. Hang in there conservatives . At least we understand the Deception that we face in campaign 2012 ! They fooled so many voters with the Obama Is Mr Uniter ” Bull-oney last go around. Wonder what Big Lies they’ll be foisting on the American public this go around.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 11:33am@KINGCANON – Sweet moses that was a strange comment! lol! Mormons – “self centered”???
You do realize that the 14 million person church is run completely on volunteer work from the members (there is absolutely no paid clergy)? Go to a Sunday service and EVERY person giving a sermon, teaching a class, cleaning, singing, playing pianos, etc. etc. etc. is doing it 100% for free and out the goodness of their hearts to serve one another. Go to the local church on Wednesday nights and see all the people there volunteering to lead the youth groups for free, or go there Saturday to see families cleaning the church for free. All out of service for others. Whenever someone is moving in or out of the area, go to their house to see the men of our church helping move the boxes and the women there helping to clean and organize the home. Now look at the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints willingly giving a full 10% of everything they make to the Lord, and additionally giving additional offerings (such as fast-offerings, etc.)… Now look at the thousands of 19 year old boys who give up everything in their lives to serve the Lord on a mission FULL TIME for two years without pay – and in fact pay their own way (while most other boys their age are thinking about nothing but partying at college). Don’t forget about all those “service projects” each week by the members to help the needy.
SO self-centered – definitely not thinking of others first.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 1:26pmAll of that looks pleasing on the surface and doesn’t reflect self-centeredness at all. However, my friend, there is a greed within the Mormon Church that supersedes all that you boast of here today. Sadly, personal gain is the mindset I am most familiar with among those belonging to Mormonism in my area. Perhaps the church should train/retrain and then send out a new breed of non self-centered missionaries nipping this cancer on Mormonism in the bud. Because… right now it’s rotten to the core!

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 3:30pmMormons are self centered AND dishonest? I like how you doubled down there. Do any research at all on Mormonism and you will find that we are renowned the world over for our selflessness and our honesty!!
Report Post »Ask any mayor or government official whose town has been devistated by a natural disaster in the last 50 years what religion was there to help. They will all say the mormons came!
Companies specifically recruit mormons because they are honest. The US government hires mormons for the CIA and FBI. BYU sends more graduates to the FBI and CIA than almost any other university.
I said this is what bigotry looks like because you are stating things contrary to the truth simply because you do not care for mormons and yes, that is bigotry.

Report Post »Mormonism or chameleonism has changed so many times the honesty you boast of surprises me. I do know that all agencies you speak of hire from every genre of life, even communism. Moreover, boasting of holding government hired positions might not be the venue you want to portray.
But then knowing Mormonism as I do I understand all that you are saying, in fact, your own words bring us full circle back to self-centeredness!

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 9:18amSO obozo is making back room deals with putin to cut our defense, Santantrum is in yet another of a long string of screaming matches with reporters cause he is an anger management poster girl, and beck, blaze want to beat up Romney because he said he would consider more fuel efficient cars? What is wrong with that? They should be working to make cars more fuel efficient. And it’s said to be from 2007, but they don’t really know. He didn’t say Im going to switch to solar and wind and battery, but you dolts act like he did. If you can‘t see the difference between Romney who can fix the countrys’ problems and idiots like obama and cry baby santantrum then please don‘t vote and don’t have children.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 9:40am@ squid…. nice liberal tactics there don’t make an intellligent point just start name calling and illogical/nonexistant conclusions. I gave examples of why not obama and santantrum, they don’t know how old this audio really is, and AGAIN, what is wrong with considering more fuel efficient cars? I didn‘t say don’t vet Romney, I also said if you are not smart enough to see the difference, don’t vote, and don’t have children. That means don’t be lazy and just buy what the media feeds you. That means be smart enough to go figure out the differences on your own. You apparently are not. You are obviously for santantrum or obama, thanks for your trolling.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 10:00amThat is hilarious. Yea, I’m a big pink – O commie liberal. I know what I believe pal. I know what was in my heart when I wore the uniform of my country and swore to give my life for it. I was making the point via sarcasm the people deserve to know if he said this and suggesting that people need to just shut up and vote for someone is ridiculous. BTW, voting a falliable man into office is not going to fix our country. It is a constant fight. It’s been my experience that “our side” gets wobbly in the knees when the fight comes. I’m not sure when Mitt gets punched in the nose, that he will punch back. But, you‘re the expert so I’ll just ignore my 20 years of following politics every single day.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 10:12amBesides there Mr. Pious. Weren‘t you the one calling Santorum a crybaby and now you’re whining that I challenged your point? You accuse me of name – calling (which I never did) and then you call me dumb? You want logic? When voters that pay scant attention look at Romney and Obama and do not see a clear difference, they will either sit home or vote for the known evil. If the base is not excited, the ground effort will not match what the unions will do. Romney has to give people a reason to get excited about voting for him. The fact that he’s not Obama is not enough. Don’t forget (and I‘m sure you won’t because your smarter than me) that Obama will pretend to be center – right just like last time because Democrats know they have to. So when John Q Idiot (who’s vote counts as much as yours and mine) starts paying attention around October 25th, he needs to be able to see a big difference between our candidate and Obama.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 11:43amI don’t think he feels the government is the answer to all our problems. Romney was opposed to the auto bailouts; and his father was the CEO of American Motors and brought that company back from the brink of bankruptcy without government aid. He understands and believes in Capitalism, which is a core tenet of Conservatism.
Maybe this will convince you of his Conservatism:
