Flashback to ‘Electric Fence’ Anti-Gay Pastor’s 1978 Sermon: 40 Years Ago Gays Would Have Been Hanged ‘From a White Oak Tree’

Hate isn‘t something that’s supposed to stream from the pulpit. This is why overt examples of controversial church rhetoric, while they represent a small minority of faith communities, spread like wildfire across the blogosphere. Take, for instance, Charles L. Worley, the pastor at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, North Carolina. On Monday, The Blaze brought you his startling words about trapping “lesbians and queers” with an electric fence until they eventually die off.
Now, in the wake of the controversy surrounding the preacher’s words, ThinkProgress notes that Jeremy Hooper, a blogger at GoodAsYou.org, dug up an equally-troubling sermon from 1978. In it, Worley allegedly made some comments about lesbians and gays hanging from a white oak tree. In a clip that was apparently posted by the church, these purportedly decades-old words can be heard.
“I’m God’s preacher. I just believe the book. Living in a day when, you know what, it saddens my heart to think that homosexuals can go around, bless God, and get the applause of a lot of people,” a male voice can be heard saying. “Lesbians and all the rest of it? Bless God, forty years ago they’d have hung ‘em, bless God, from a white oak tree, wouldn’t they? Amen. Sure they would.”
Listen to the recording, below (full audio here):
The clip is only seconds long and it lacks context. However, it is posted on SermonAudio.com in its entirety, dated April 30, 1978 and attributed to the church’s pastor. Worely seems to make the reference while speaking about the church’s need to stand up for its values.
A lesbian who claims to have attended 20 of the Worley’s sermons says that such sentiment is common at the church:
Considering the story’s far reach, it’s likely that other videos and clips of Worely will be making their way out in the coming days.

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 3:58pmWell, I don’t believe people should do what they want, but I believe that people are (w/in the boundries of the law) free to do so.
There’s a difference between the two positions.
As a Bible believing Christian, I believe that people should hold themselves to the highest moral standard possible & act as if God Himself was standing over their shoulder at all times (because He is). I also understand that, along w/ inalienable rights, our Creator endowed us w/ free will to do as we like because forced subjugation is not what a loving God wants for His children.
How does this apply to the above speech? God hates the sin, not the sinner. God wants us to hold ourselves to an impossibly standard but knows that we will stumble. That’s the entire reason we needed (& why He came to Earth in the form of) Jesus. God has also commanded us: “Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.” ~Lev. 19:17 “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.” ~Luke 17:3, “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.” ~Matthew 18:15 & then told us in John 8:7 that unless we’re entirely sinless, we should not to cast the first stone.
God’s will is pretty clear. We are to rebuke the sinner w/o hating him. Worley blesses God while clearly hating the sinner to the point of putting him to death. That’s not Jo

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 3:01pmIf parents and pastors did their jobs, and trained their children and handled their stewardships the way they are supposed to, then nobody would be talking about hanging anyone from a “white oak tree. People need to be taught and brought up to recognize sin and avoid people and places that could cause them to sin. Lead by example. People, both parents are leaving their children in the care of strangers, or on the street, or with one parent to raise. Just like that grandmother the other day who had raised her own children and took on a rebellious grandson who most likely drove her nuts. That boy had his own grandmother afraid of him. He ended up killing him. Now who really is at fault here? That set of parents should have known better than to put their own mother (and mother-in-law) in such a predicament to where she was to the point of no return. She should not have shot anyone unarmed, but there is little doubt he was abusing his grandmother in some substantial way or threatening her. I think that people should handle their own responsibilities and quite getting violent unless they are threatened to the point they have too. The result of people, pastors with stewardships and the government pushing their responsibilities off on those who are not capable of handling them needs to stop. People who advocate violence against those who are misdirected are not performing their responsibility. It is our place to get the word out and stand by it. God will judge.

When wolf demands agreement (i.e. “You can do better than that!“ ”Turn to neighbor on left and say ‘amen.’“ ”How-many-of-you-know” I won’t count how-many-of-you-know.”) he is performing EVIL, WITCHY stage-hypnotism.

They say: “Amen?” (audience: “amen!”) “Bless-GOWD?” (audience: “bless-Gowd!”) “Shout Halelluja!” (audience “hallelujah!”)
Once controlling the audience’s mouths, they proceed to body with “Turn to your neighbor!“ and ”Stand and shout!“ and ”eyes closed in prayer“ and ”look straight at me!”
Then they proceed to the mind with “turn to this verse!”, “look up another”, remember but don’t turn to John 3:16!”, and “Finish my……. SENTENCE!”

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 3:20pmYour mocking is not right. The man is a pastor, showing his hate of sin. I do not know his heart. At one time people did kill to keep to prevent the spread of sin, especially before Grace appeared (after the birth, death, and resurection of Christ). They did stone people to death and animal blood sacrifices were made to cover sin to make a point and school people into knowing that sin has terrible consequences. The stonings and beatings never did away with sin. A heart in the right place will enable people to have the desire to do right. Christ left His Spirit here for us when He ascended to Heaven. This will cover a multitude of sin in that they have a conscious about sin. Anyway, it is not wise to mock those who are pastors. Stay away from the wolves in sheeps clothing. If you know the Bible and have Christ’s Spirit within you, you will be able to discern the Truth. The Bible even tells you to study and show yoursefl approved.

If a gay person wanted to come into our church and hear the word of God preached, to hear how they were living in a sinful lifestyle that would damn their soul to everlasting torment, they would be welcomed.
We need more preachers in the pulpit that aren’t afraid to stand their ground and preach against gays, drugs, cheating on your wives, and all the rest of the things the church has been timid and quiet about for decades.
Sure the preacher got carried away, but instead of attacking him we should be joining his attack on a lifestyle that is ruining America.

I agree wholeheartedly when you say:
“ just let them live their lives in peace and give them the same rights as any other citizen of the US”.
I have 2 things to say.
1) Homosexuals, as individuals, DO have the same rights as everyone else. I think it‘s the ’married’ ones you are talking about.
2) I have yet to see a specific list of rights they are denied. I would like to see one – can you help me? I am being serious. I know of one – that medical decisions by ‘partners’ are often overruled by family members. Are there others?
I do not hate homosexuals, nor do I advocate their banishment. Many are wonderful, caring people and I am in no way threatened by their existence. I do, however, believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. If there are issues that need to be hammered out regarding a legal union between them, let’s look at them and see if they can be resolved.

We call it “free will”. God does not make homosexuals, any more than he makes rapist, child molesters, or people who have sex with goats.
Homosexuality is not the result of a choice, it is the result of a series of choices. There is also an environmental side to the issue. You will find a high degree of homosexuals coming from broken homes, victims of sexual assault at a young age, unbalanced families with overbearing mothers, or uncaring fathers. Why do you think AIDS and homosexuality is hitting the black community so hard right now. have you see the stats on the amount of young blacks that are the victims of sexual assault? Are you aware that seven in ten black kids are born into single parent families?
It is a very sad lifestyle, and there is nothing “gay” about it. You are talking about a group of people that have a very high suicide rates, and they also have very high drug and alcohol abuse rates. Couple all of that with the extreme high disease rates. They are only 2.5% of the population, and have 64% of the syphilis, 70% of new HIV cases last year in the U.S, gay bowel syndrome, anal and oral gonorrhea….. A very sad lifestyle that I would not wish on anyone.
Fortunately, we serve a very powerful God, who can save and change homosexuals.

Thanks for the brief list.
Medical visitations can also be blocked by family – That’s a shame and should be looked at.
Marriage of a straight couple can be used for one spouse to obtain citizenship, not so homosexual couples – I don’t think homosexual marriage should be legal, so I guess I can say – Sorry, but that’s the way it goes…
Tax benefits – I think tax breaks should only go to legally married couples who are actively raising children under the age of 18. Once your kids are grown, or if you are childless, no tax break.
Property rights – I think a legal contract could suffice.
Military benefits (insurance, survivor, etc) – and I would add ANY insurance – This is a decision made by the employer, not the insurance company. Some employers pay all of the cost, some pay partial, some pay for the family, etc. Many companies offer benefits to ‘partners’ and I would suggest working for one of those. It’s a benefit that employers use to entice workers. If you don’t like it, find another job.
I appreciate the list, as I am as tired of hearing about ‘equal rights’ as I am ‘fair share’.
You may not agree with my solutions, but it gives us a basis for discussion and possible compromise.
As I said, all homosexuals, as individuals, have the same rights as any other citizen. Your list contained may items that relate to marriage, which I am against.
I’m sure we disagree, but that’s my opinion.

This is the issue, you are given a whole host of benefits to one class of citizens and excluding another from the same benefits. On its face its a violation of the notion of equal protection and outside any religious argument, the state can not produce a single reason to justify this directed bigotry. The fact that some citizens, even a majority of citizens disagree with the life style of a group is not enough justification to deny them a basic civil right and the privledges that accompany that right.

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 1:10pmWell, I’d like to comment that much of modern Churchianity uses Neuro-Linguistic Programming to achieve their “ends-justifies’means” way of obtaining finances and power.
NLP uses a) stage hypnotism, b) showmanship, c) misdirection and d) suggestion.
The Great American Mind of our Forefathers who founded this country: didn’t!
Even great entertainers like Glenn Beck sometimes absent-mindedly use NLP. How does this paster, like so many pastors on TBN, use NLP’s hypnotism, showmanship, misdirection and suggestion?
a) Stage Hypnotism: First, the continual use of “AMEN?“ and ”BLESS-GAWD?“ The speaker continually demands audience ”amen“ and ”bless-Gawd“ respond with a Troglodyte guttural ”amen-yes”. This ELIMINATES thinking. (Great communicators don’t do this, mind-enslavers: do!)
b) Showmanship: Pastor walks back and forth, left to right, like a hypnotist’s watch fob. He struts, he aggrandizes self, puts on a show.
c) Misdirection: He says bible supports his view and his being, both of which are questionable and antithetic to good.
d) Suggestion: He says: Fence or Hang Gays, something totally against the following two things:
The American Mind believes…
1) There is one God above us all (including gays) and…
2) There is one universal philosophy of the West (which is tolerant of gays, pluralists and eccentrics)
Currently, modern Churchianity believes 1… (partially) and not much of 2. That’s why it implodes!

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 12:57pmI love the Blaze’s coverage of this guy. Everything is “allegedly” anti-gay or “lacks context.” What context do you need when a guy says he wants to hang homosexuals from oak trees? Sounds pretty clear to me.
Who knew that Islam wasn’t the only religion with a lunatic fringe?

We need more Churches to speak up but they are willfully silent for the most part.

Posted on May 23, 2012 at 1:19pmencinom – you don’t read much history do you. John Adams (2nd President) stated that the US Constitution was created for a moral and religious people and that it was wholly inadequate to govern any other. That sounds like religion had everything to do with the establishment of America.

Do they preach that if you get a divorce and re marry you commit adultery? It is in the new Testament. You probably are sitting next to a sinner at church you know one of those evil homos or an adulterer. Scary!

Report Post »God’s Word has no place outside of a Church? So in other words, screw the First Amendment? If you’re not advocating any anti-free speech laws and just stating your opinion, fine, but that’s all that it is and you cannot force that belief onto anybody who disagrees (if you did, wouldn’t you be doing the very things that you claim Christians are doing?). I agree that this “Pastor” is an idiot and a hatemonger, and I hope that the people in that church realize this and either have him step down or go to another church, but whether you like it or not, the First Amendment says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF; OR ABRIDGING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH…” People have the right to speak in Church, in public, or on any private property if the owner of said property has no objection to them being there. A Christian has the right to free speech just as much as any Jewish person, a Muslim, an atheist or even a Scientologist.

Let me clarify my statement, I do not care what private people do, when I say God’s word must remain in the Churhc, I mean, they should never be the basis for laws, especially laws that restrict the freedoms and liberties of others. US laws should always remain secular and the pandering on the Right to the Fundimentalist and Fringe Conservative Churchs is a violations of the spirit of the Constitution and the Republic.
@mcsledge
Cherry picking statements from one man does not change the facts or history. Of course this is the President that signed into law, the unconstitutional Aliens and Sedition act, the act that sought to limit the freedom of speech and the press. He might not be the best judge as to the meaning of the Constitution.
