Flexing The ‘Goodness Muscle’: Beck Delivers Powerful History Lesson About Herbert Hoover

After much anticipation, Wednesday marks the beginning of Restoring Love, the culmination of Glenn Beck’s three-year series of events focusing on courage, honor and charity. People are traveling to Dallas, Texas, from all over the country to attend this multi-day event. On his Monday evening broadcast, Beck invoked an important lesson from Herbert Hoover, who, rather than provide people in need with a government hand-out, called on the goodness of the community to provide for each other.

Recalling how then-Commerce Secretary Hoover earned the moniker “the great humanitarian,” for his handling of the massive, Mississippi Flood of 1927, Beck explored the motivations behind this great American — motivations which likely led to his claiming the presidency just two years later.

Hoover’s very first step during the crisis was not to hand-out government assistance, rather, he asked the community to donate their own resources and skills to aid each other in time of turmoil. Why would he call on the army when he could call on Main Street, Beck recalled.

At the end of the day, the public ended up donating more than double what the government did. Hoover knew that “America is great because America is good,“ but also that goodness ”is a muscle,” Beck qualified. “And when it is not used it will atrophy.”

This is an era in which we are going to need to “flex that muscle” because ”America has been trained not to use [it].”

Watch Beck deliver this important history lesson below:

not sure bringing up the floods of ‘27 was very bright since blacks were rounded up and forced to work under threat of death, men and women of color were beaten and forced from their homes and into servitude. statements and actions allowed by hoover were contradictory at best.

Damn, you’re an idiot. Beck (and I) supports Romney because we already know what we get with Obama. If you vote for Obama – directly or indirectly – then you can bet that he will gain more executive power than he already has. Romney is nowhere near perfect but he never ignored bills from the House and Senate while threatening the Supreme Court.

I know your upset Brother, I don‘t really like my choice’s either but Romney is without a doubt the lesser of the two evils we cannot afford to have Obama in the white house for 4 more years, we need to ban together to get this guy out. In this case it is voting for Romney, I would rather have Ron Paul, but I will have to settle for Romney, unless somehow Ron P gets the nomination.

There is a huge difference between the two except you don’t want to see it. Can’t you see that Obama represents religious persecution, social justice, dividing our nation, anti-capitalism, anti-Constitution, snubbing our allies, etc? While Romney is a man of faith, believes in capitalism, believes in American exceptional-ism, Pro Military, and not a man that is willing to sit down at the table with our enemies? To me, there is a huge difference. You can argue that both men will cripple this nation, but the difference between the two is that Obama is destroying our country on purpose.

Oh there’s a difference Brother Winston. One is a flash fryer (Obama), the other is a slow boil (Romney). Ultimate end-goal is the same, but the visions are slightly different between secular progressives and faux-religious neo-cons. Progressives do not care who ends up with the ultimate power, and prefer out and out socialism which eventually leads to a form of communism (at least the non-idealogues who understand insane ideal socialist philosophy is economically and sociologically impossible). The elites for this group have no care about their ultimate destination, so America can be pulled into the dumps in every way.

Neo-cons are pro fascism, aka, national socialism. While the main difference between communism and fascism is the economic powerhouses are out in the open in fascism, but wearing party colours and uniforms in socialisms (treated as indistinguishable in public display), there are others. One being a distinguished view of country, and therefor ultimate military power. The elites in this group actually care where the power structure resides and those in the US typically want the US to maintain military dominance and public independence (so they can keep up nationalist sentiments).

End result is a totalitarian state that gets rid of the classic liberal philosophy that dominated the mid-1800′s and saw the greatest growth in personal achievement, business growth, and personal wealth (middle class, lower wealthy classes).

@bluegrandma52 — Um, Calvin Coolidge was a big time conservative who shrank government to very small levels which we haven’t seen since. The results of his and Harding’s policies were the “Roaring 20s,” and though there was the crisis in 1929, Hoover was the one who made it worse by implementing a lot of Progressive policies — higher taxes on the rich (nearly a 200% hike on their taxes) and make work government stimulus programs for others. Hoover’s policies failed, just like Obama’s, though the difference is that Hoover actually believed they‘d work while Obama knows they won’t work as advertised, but will work to cut America down to size.

It wasn’t Wilson who put the US into World War I, it was the Germans. After promising to stop illicit submarine attacks on civilian shipping, they had reverted to the practice, not only sinking Allied vessels that happened to have Americans on board–as with the Lusitania two years earlier–but even, in 1917, sinking American ships. I suppose Wilson should simply have tolerated these attacks? But you might note that he did not take us into war on his own, or through the back door, like subseqent presidents. Instead he polled his cabinet and influential leaders of both parties, went to Congress and asked for a proper war declaration. In effect, Germany had already declared war on the US, so what was the alternative?

Thank you too! Wilson’s campaigning in 1916 did not promise to keep us out of World War I, it merely stated the fact that he had kept us out of the war so far, and left the voters to draw their own conclusions as to what he might do in a second term.

It’s really time to banish the word “evil” from our arguments about American presidents! Not even the most foolish and misguided, like Buchanan, were truly evil. Of the ones on your list,

Taft was conservative only in the context of 1912–he favored a progressive income tax, for example.

Harding favored an equal rights amendment for women and civil rights for blacks in the South, putting him way ahead of most Republicans as well as Democrats in the early 1920s.

Hoover tried to pressure business into maintaining wages, bailed out banks and insurance companies, and raised taxes.

Truman advocated a “Fair Deal,” in which he included national health insurance, though he did not get it.

Reagan left income taxes lower, but other Federal taxes higher, than when he took office, and utterly failed to balance the budget.

But why did you leave Coolidge out? He was the only really consistent conservative of the 20th century, with a truly minimalist conception of what the presidential office should be.

Get your thinking cap on and understand there is a revisionist bent to most history you learned in high school and college. There is nothing revisionist about the truth, the truth is second only to Nixon, Hoover was one of the worst Presidents in US history. Hoover’s pro big business policies and his lack of willingness to address the issues concerning the poor and the great depression are proof that Beck has no understanding what he is talking about. Beck is doing some choice cherry-picking here. According to today’s conservative orthodoxy, Hoover as president was a progressive who, instead of doing nothing as Harding had during the depression of 1920-1922, could not resist meddling, thereby setting a bad precedent for FDR and all the horrors of the New Deal. Hoover tried to pressure business leaders into maintaining high wages. He signed the Smoot-Hawley tariff bill. He bailed out big banks and insurance companies instead of letting the free market do its work. He committed the unforgivable sin of raising taxes. He even said that, if forced to remain in office a few more days, he would have confiscated all gold and closed the banks–exactly what FDR did.

You’re leaving out the part where the bonuses were not payable until 1945. Its all in the history books. Congress was working on changing the World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924. Hoover was against it because it was over $3 billion dollars, which the government didn’t have at the time and the depression was everywhere.

It wasn’t Hoover that marched on Washington. It wasn‘t Hoover that didn’t use our political process. It wasn’t Hoover that used violence to force a political end. It was Hoover that ordered the end to violence. Its all there – stop picking minute points and spinning them. Try some honesty and integrity in your posts.

I submit that the rise of that time IS hyperinflation. It’s mostly a function of fuel costs, insurance and regulation, but it’s a nasty trio that is showing no signs of backing off. Beck is correct on inflation and it will only accellerate from this point if they keep printing money, and it’s not just food.

I am a mother of 6 and teach science. I shop (literally) four different grocery stores and travel a great deal to know prices in other states. I know flea markets, second hand stores and corner fruit/veggie stands as well. I can coupon with the best and buy fresh produce in bulk to homecan. I know my grocery prices.
I have, currently, in my pantry evidence of packaging changes to a smaller size by weight, in some packages up to a 50% reduction to maintain the near same price. On can goods that did not change packaging the prices have went up substantially. Within the past 3 months a can of my dd’s fav soup(s) went from .49 to .95. I stocked my pantry with can goods priced 3 for $1.00 just last year that are now 1.00 each. Canned beef with gravy went from 2.49 to 3.99. Ground beef that regularly sold for .99 lb. is now 1.99 and a .99 lb sale is rare. Paper plates went from .99 for 100 to .99 for 50 (plates). Dinner napkins stayed the same price but the package is half as large as just a few months ago. I could go on and on with proof about smaller packages and/or higher prices for groceries and I ‘m confident that I am not the only person who can prove grocery prices have inflated.

Bottom line, proof is in the evidence and the evidence clearly shows prices have skyrocketed in a short amount of time, hence, the cra.p is all yours.
