Florida Atheists Scrub Away Highway Blessing With ‘Unholy Water’ Because They‘re Not Going to Tolerate ’Bigotry’

Florida Atheists Scrub Away Highway Blessing With Unholy Water

The latest fight between atheists and religious groups leaves one asking who really crossed the line.

Polk County, Florida, sits smack in the middle of the Sunshine State containing several highways drivers travel through to make their way between major cities in the state. Last year, area religious leaders formed a group, Polk Under Prayer (PUP), that decided to bless the Pasco-Polk county line along Highway 98. PUP’s director said the act was done so that “God would protect us from evildoers, mainly the drug crowd, that they would be dissuaded to come in to the county.”

This gesture has apparently offended area atheists deeply enough that they felt the need to organize an event Saturday to symbolically scrub away the holy oils used by PUP to bless the county line. Bay News 9 reports that the atheists, organized by Humanists of Florida, used “unholy water” to remove the blessing and wash the road because it made them feel uncomfortable:

“But Humanists of Florida members don’t see it that way. They say it makes them feel unwelcome.

‘It sends a very bad signal to everyone in Polk County, and (anyone) who travels through Polk county who doesn’t happen to be Christian,’ Palmer said, ‘This event is not about atheist rights; this is about welcoming everybody into Polk county.’

So they took their ‘unholy water’ and washed the road.

It’s been an ongoing feud between the groups in the county: the atheists are also unhappy with prayer bricks PUP members buried along I-4 and various other roadway leading in to the county, engraved with Psalm 37.

‘For the wicked shall be destroyed, but those who trust the Lord shall be given every blessing,’ Geringswald (PUP director) said, reading the psalm from his Bible.

Geringswald said PUP is trying to do something positive – to keep crime out and encourage faith. He says they also plan to run TV ads later this year that will say they are trying to send a positive message about criminals turning their lives around.

The humanists say they don’t plan on stopping their protests any time soon.”

Ellen Beth Wachs, the president of Humanists of Florida Association and Atheists of Florida, further explained to ABC News the motivation of the eight atheists who scrubbed Saturday:

“’This anointment ritual was to call out the angels to check each car that entered the county, to make sure they were Christian, and if they weren’t Christian, they would either follow Christian beliefs or get put in jail,’ Wachs told ABC News.

Wachs said the eight members of the Humanists of Florida Association who brought buckets of water to the roadway today did so in jest.

‘They understand that a year later, there’s no oil left on the roadway. It’s just a symbolic gesture to show that we can poke a little bit of fun at the Polk Under Prayer gesture. We’re not going to tolerate their bigotry,’ Wachs said.”

Atheist groups have found themselves in national headlines of late for campaigns against those with religious believes that raise the question of which side is really intolerant. American Atheists carried out a multi-state campaign around the holiday season last December, posting billboards on major highways that associated Jesus Christ, Santa Claus and the Devil, to myths. The same group filed a lawsuit last summer to stop a steel cross found at Ground Zero from being displayed at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. ABC News reports on the latest clash between atheists and religious groups in Florida:

Atheists will always be Useful Idiots for some cult. Right now they’re Cultural Marxists. During the French Revolution it was “The Goddess of Reason.” They’re always some hate cult seeking to tear down, attack, hate, blame, lie, and deny. Atheists make great Liberals.

To say someone is an atheist is to say won’t they do not believe, not what they do. To says that you have a group of atheists is about as informing as saying you have a group of people that don’t like country music. Maybe they prefer classical, punk or new age – who knows.

And atheist seems to be a fluid word these days as well – some would even consider it the equivalent of agnostic or even close; that’d be a gross mistake. So, while making a sensational article for the purpose of harvesting readers and comments, “atheist” doesn’t mean a whole lot on its own.

Well somebody needs to go down there all Norm MacDonald-like and say: Hey, hey hey, what are you uh, supposed to be cleaning, huh? Oh, you’re uh cleaning H2O out of the highway eh? But Jesus didn’t come about through H2O, Jesus came about through water and blood. Get it? Yeah uh, Kind of like me telling you Jesus didn’t come about by H2O – that would be the water when you realize it‘s true coming down off your buzz of hurting people’s feelings. And the blood would be you paying the price for being wrong all along. In other words Jesus Christ came through hundreds and hundreds of years of mistakes, and realizing the mistake, and then paying the price for the mistakes – that’s water and blood.

Well, frankly, this all sounds kind of silly to me on both sides. To the PUP I’d says, first, cars put plenty of oil on the roads (and then into the creeks), as if any were needed to start with. Second, if you want to stop drug traffic or other crime, I don’t believe blessing a road is going to help, any more than sacrificing an animal there will (Leviticus 4:35 etc). I get the gesture. Okay, fine, whatever. But try something else okay?

To the atheists I’d say, get a life. What’s wrong with you? You’re just poking fun at people to get their goat? You’re idiots.

Idiots yes, but far from useful. This attention-grabbing scheme has backfired.

These atheists demonstrated that they believe the water is holy/anointed/supernatural etc. just as much as the Catholics. Otherwise, they would simply scoff at the well-intended attempt… instead of investing time and energy to remove it. If it is not holy, then it is plain water and does not require removal any more so than plain rainwater.

One does find people’s willful ignorance amusing… I always enjoy a good laugh (being a believer in the the Father as Creator and Salvation of the Lord) when greeted [confronted] by those who claim to be Athiest and make such a declaration of themselves. “Hi, I am atheist!” and I reply, “That’s great! I am a Christian, too!” Afterall, if people knew some history they would know that the early ‘Christians’, persecuted and enslaved by the Romans (in their coloseums et cetera), were the first ‘Atheists’ since they wouldn’t bow down to the Roman/Pagan gods and the various deities! Hence, the Christians are the original Atheists!

I say we Christians start 2012 off with a campaign to ignore all atheists and their shenanigans. We shall do what we want, when we want and ignore these fools. That is what my bible calls them…fools. In the scheme of God’s eternity these men and women, exercising their freedom of stupidity, shall be naught but a sorry remembrance for a believing Grandma or Grandpa or mom or dad who tried so desperately to save their children from the Lake of Fire, and failed. We grieve for the believer who could not wake the foolish atheist from their love of iniquity. Many a dead-atheist already knows the anguish of their foolishness as seperation from God eternally is their every moment of mental torture forever and ever.

      Holy crap!

I’m shocked and amazed to see that I agree with JZS on this one.

Even down to “try something other than holy water.”

Here’s the deal: I’m intimatetly familiar with Polk County, having lived in the general area for a long while. This is the county that was nationally known as sex-predator sting and meth lab capital of the US.

If the very religious population of Polk County (and the vast, vast, *vast* majority there are) want to put out prayer bricks and holy water, whatever floats their boat. It‘s not picking anyone’s pocket or breaking anyone’s bones.

Unfortunately, Atheists (not all, but enough to make one believe that it’s most) aren’t content with just overlooking things that they see as superstition. They feel compelled to harrass and annoy people of Faith at every opportunity, and it’s only getting worse year after year.

Can anyone honestly say that they can remember somehting as brazen as this or the billboards as few as 20 years ago? Even 10 years ago, there was only the one-off, here-and-there case, but nothing like the full court press that‘s happening here from Atheist groups’ billboards to Obama”s attack on religious freedom, you name it.

      To THE ATHEIST LIBERTARIAN

While not all atheists are like the ones in this article, it is fair to say that lately there have been a number of incidents where an atheist group has gone out of its way to be flamboyantly provocative. Groups like American Atheist and Freedom From Religion have been waging attention-getting campaigns along the same lines as a group like PETA. Following the logic that there’s no such thing as bad press, they act up and attract just enough attention – and donations – to justify their behavior.
The down side is that they get labeled as fanatics by many others who then may ascribe that behavior to all atheist groups.
Consider the group in this article. According to the Humanists of Florida, “This event is not about atheist rights; this is about welcoming everybody into Polk county” by ritually scrubbing the road with ‘unholy’ water. So a group that professes to be about reason and against meaningless mythological rituals enacts its own rituals.
Surely I’m not the only one who sees the irony.

By the proximity of your comment to that of STAGE9′s, I suspect you are questioning the validity of the statement that “Atheistic regimes are responsible for the brutal murder of more people in the 20th century than all other centuries combined.”
Admittedly “all other centuries combined” makes doing any meaningful research a stretch because where does one obtain reliable data from antiquity and how does one definite atheism in, say, Mycenae in the 5th century BC? Nonetheless, it is fair to say that in the 20th century, regimes normally described as being atheists were particularly brutal and were responsible for a profound amount of deaths. According to R.J. Rummel now Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Hawaii, deaths attributable to various communist regimes range from a low estimate of 40 million to an upper estimate of 260 million with 110 million being a fairly reasonable and reliable mid value. (http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/COM.ART.HTM). This number covers the time period from 1900 to 1987 and includes communist regimes in 30 different countries. (Another data source is http://necrometrics.com/20c5m.htm).
If nothing else, such numbers ought to provide strong evidence that man will be vicious to his fellow man with or without religious differences to use as an excuse.

How old were these people? I assume we are talking adults here, presumably ones that made it past third grade.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the blessing of the county line happened LAST YEAR. I hadn’t heard that Polk County was in a drought, so I assume it has rained down there. Any oil or holy water used would have been washed away weeks, if not months ago.

Secondly, the whole point of the prayers of protection was to keep those involved in drugs away along with those who would come to Polk County with evil intentions. I guess the atheists are endorsing drug dealers, murderers, rapists, thieves, and child molesters to come to Polk County. I guess they are more comfortable with that level of society. And trust me, they are already there, and I don’t even have to search the local newspapers to verify that.

Personally, that’s not the kind of clientele I would want to encourage to come to my area. Taxes go up and the people who pay taxes and give the place a reputation as a worthwhile area to live and do business in leave. Doubt me? Have a quick chat with any realtor, your choice. Schools, services and crime are the major deciding factors for people looking to move into a new area.

Finally, who knew about the blessing and was “turned away”? Was there a sign? Who made the fuss, not the PUP group. And as for the atheists, wow, they’re running scared. I guess they actually do believe in something.

Hmmm… ask any thoracic surgeon what happens when a human being gets suspended with arms stretched out and unable to support their weight. Breathing becomes labored, suffocation sets in and the lining of the lungs and heart become filled with fluid (i.e. water). When the spear of Longinus pierced the side of Jesus Christ, both water and blood poured out. Since it was from the very body of God’s only begotten Son, the water was most definitely holy.
Next, in consideration for Holy Water blessed by priests and deacons, it is by invoking the power of the Trinity  (that is in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). This authority is given by Jesus Christ  to the Apostles and their successors. The blessing of water is called a sacramental. Two sites to visit if you want to know more about it….

Good point. If the atheists really did not believe in any “supernatural” being/force/whatever (which is what atheists always SAY), then they would have “Plain Water” or “Non-Holy Water” — but “UNholy Water” would support what atheists vehemently deny — that they are “pro-Satan“ or some other ”unholy” being/force/whatever.

scarebear83, where did Jesus say that you have to be a member of a church?

Second, “He is the Way the Truth and the Life and no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6)”

You don’t understand what this means. It does not involve heavens as a some form of destination.

“even then there will be those who even believe that won’t see heaven for Jesus will tell them to depart (Matt. 7:21-23)”

Also, the meaning of this is different from what you think it is. I won’t tell you, you’ll know what it means at one point.

“It is those who DO the will of the Father. For those who believe AND obey and remain faithful unto death will receive a crown of life. (Rev. 2:10)”

What do you think the will of the Father is? Following what the church tells you to follow?
It almost sounds like you believing that a formal observance is the way. Nothing is further from the truth.

…have to be a member of a church?

Those who truly are Christ’s have been added to His church Acts 2:47, 1 Cor. 12:13 The church involves people and in the 1st century those people met regularly as pointed out in Acts and the letters to the 1st cent. churches

“u don’t understand… It does not involve heavens as a some form of destination.”

I don’t think I stated that. My point was that Jesus is the only way for 1 to be saved. Buddha or Zeus will not save, nor any other way that may *seem* right to a man.

“the meaning of this is different from what u think it is.”

I must have missed something then, Jesus will allow disobedient people into heaven even if they do believe?

“What do u think the will of the Father is? Following what the church…”

The will of the Father is stated plainly in the Bible. You don’t need denominational church creeds to tell u what is right or wrong, that‘s man’s way and thus those who will say on Judgment Day “Did we not prophecy in your name? etc.” thought they were doing what was right but followed their own way instead of what the Lord commanded. We are commanded to hear the word of God (Rom. 10:17) To believe (John 3:16) confess (Matt. 10:32-33) repent (Luke 13:3) and be baptized FOR the remission of sins (Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16) and remain faithful unto death (Rev. 2:10, John 14:15) Everything we need to know about God’s will for us as it relates to salvation can be found in the Bible. I’m starting to come to a conclusion about “Athesists”. They seem very caught up in denouncing other people’s beliefs. Not just with stunts like this one, but I’ve even noticed it in my work place. There is a lady who I work with that seems to always make it the point to everyone in the office that she’s an athesist. Like we all really need to know this. Personally, I think she does this to convince herself more than convince us of her beliefs (or lack there of). It‘s like a little kid who’s left out of a club and is ttrying to convince themselves that they don’t need to belong. They’ll have just as much fun by themselves.

I also have a friend who does the same thing. It‘s almost like he’s angry at God rather than not believing in him. I kind of feel sorry for them because they always seem a little angry. Why would you be angry at what someone else believes.

    Just my observations.

But to think that athiest gather together, pull money from their own pockets to run a organization “against” something that they think does not exist is just short sighted. But the type of atheist that has to go out of his way to “erase” a blessing or put up an offensive billboard is someone with serious emotional issues they aren’t dealing with. These activist, “evangelical atheists” don’t represent the vast majority of true atheists – who just aren‘t convinced there’s a God and have no use for religion personally, but don’t have a problem with you if you are religious. These wackos are following personalities like Richard Dawkins and others like him who have made it their mission to eradicate religion from society completely, and have ignored much of history and re-defined the rest in order to make their case. They claim that science holds all the necessary answers – but true science never claims to have all the answers, it just observes the universe and seeks to understand how it works and doesn’t assign values.

These people are just a tiny group of angry malcontents who think everyone else is a moron.

TWOBYFOUR – I am not an atheist. I have been a believer for forty two years. I just don’t use common Christian terminology when communicating with others because much of it is misunderstood, misused and confusing, especially to those who don’t have a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ.

True believers and true atheists can have respectful conversations about their differences and walk away respecting each other even if they disagree. Christian zealots and New Atheists will have a shouting match and dislike each other afterwards.

It is also important for Christians to understand the true goal of science – which is NOT to disprove the existence of God, but to understand the universe around us and how it works. This desire is engraved into our DNA as humans, so we’re always exploring to see what is over the next mountain ridge or at the bottom of the ocean or in the depths of space or at the center of each molecule. It’s how God designed us, and it doesn’t clash with faith.

To get a better understanding of “New Atheism” I suggest reading “Why God Won’t Go Away” by Alister McGrath.

By the way, a real athiest would not care who you worshiped as they think there is no God, and they also think that they are right and you are ignorant for believing in God. Very disappointed in your comment about; backing down and letting gays get married because marriage is just a word, and that’s all. Marriage is something special it takes two caring individuals to make it work and in today’s world a lifelong marriage is almost obsolete. To let gays be married the same as a man and woman is a sin against God. To throw our hands up in the air and surrender to a lie is what is destroying our nations Christian beliefs. Marriage to me is much more than a word! To be married and make it work is a blessing for the couple and their offspring! Yes, I agree, many marriages do not work, and God made rules for that if you are a believer. I am so upset with the battering of Christian beliefs for someone or some group to benefit by degrading God will! I am so confused by so many hate groups who have no goal, but to disrupt someone else’s lifestyle. Maybe they should bless the road again may need it. What is wrong with Divine protection? Even for non-believers can’t hurt. Christians (all believers for that matter) unite and push them back to where ever they come from.

You don’t have to push back, you don’t have to fight. Follow the money. This so called Athiest group has to be funded, who funds it.
I would bet you my bottom dollar that these “groups” funded by Liberal political groups. Or even by the Muslim Brotherhood.
Christians and athiest got along fine until Obama and the left came to power. “Activist Athiest” what a laugh.

These atheists are starting to annoy me with their selfishness…..Some people wish for their religious beliefs to be displayed and those who aspire to the religion of atheism want none to be displayed……When courts rule that no religious symbols may be displayed doesn’t that mean the atheists beliefs are being displayed? Why do they get what they want in the public arena?

Being athiest is to deny religion. Anyone who claims to be athiest and claims to be in a group of athiest are not telling you the whole truth. An athiest would not take the time to erase a scripture, or blessing, they could care less. Look to the Liberals and you will find your guilty party. Know when you are being played.

Yeah – could be — reminds me also of that hateful “Baptist church” people who go around protesting at funerals of soldiers, etc. – could also be a bunch of radical libs — makes the “religious right” whom they hate look bad and promote more hatred toward “Christians”. Yep – could be.

@Mcpappy – Being played or not, they bring these snarks of theirs to the courts and they have been winning. Unconstitutional though it may be, they are winning and our rights are being stripped from us one by one. They are by far the most intolerant people I’ve ever seen.

Yes I know that they are coming to court and they are winning. That is kinda my point. These groups calling themselves athiest are really political hacks for the left. Where, you might ask, do they get funding from? I am quite sure that individual athiest are not pulling money from their own pockets to fund the lawyers and activist groups. My point is that Christians and Athiest have lived side by side in this country for over 2 hundred years, but here in the last 3 years all of a sudden we have athiest running around in “groups” hating on Christians. Follow the money for these so called athiest groups and I am sure you will find that they are funded by groups like Media matters, Sorros, DNC, etc, etc.
Athiest don’t hate christians, they dismiss them.

Is it not a little unbelievable that all of a sudden, I mean like just in the past 3 years that the Athiest are coming out of the wood work? This anti Christian move we are looking at is derived from this administration. I know a few athiest, and agnostic and they could not care less that Christians or Muslims worship a God. This “action athiest” bullcrap is for the unlearned masses, and is being hand fed to you by the MSM. The challenge is in the white house not in the church yard or the interstate highway. Watch what the other hand is doing while you are kept stewing in media soup they feed us.

That’s fine, but it also means the administration is at war with those of faith. That’s a might big boot to have at your throat. Ask the Catholic church.

Yes, but it is better to know who you are really at war with. The left has hijacked the athiest name and made it a tool to tear down Christian beliefs

Do you have any idea how you look when you do stupid crap like this? It makes you look like you are afraid of the Christian God in which you have supposedly no belief.

Please do grow up. If you feel unwelcome into a place that is of intense faith, perhaps you need to do some self exploration.

You don’t need to tolerate it. You don’t need to believe. When you die you go to where you need to go and I will go the other way. It makes no difference to me and I couldn’t care less.
