Food Fight: Chicago School Bans Students From Bringing Own Lunches

Food Fight: Chicago School Bans Students From Bringing Own Lunches

Who would have ever thought that the youth would revolt over bringing their own lunches to school? But while young communists march against austerity in Britain, young people at one Chicago school are fighting their administrators for the opportunity to pack their own meals. All because the school wants to promote healthy choices.

“Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?” the Chicago Tribune recently observed seventh-grader Fernando Dominguez shouting to his lunch mates in Spanish and English at Little Village Academy. It‘s a public school on Chicago’s West Side.

As numerous hands reached for the ceiling, Dominguez led a chant: “We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!”

At the school, students are only allowed to bring their own lunch if they have a medical excuse. Why? You guessed it: the school wants to protect children from food that’s unhealthy.

“Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school,”Principal Elsa Carmona told the Tribune. “It’s about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It’s milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception.”

Food Fight: Chicago School Bans Students From Bringing Own Lunches

Carmona said she instituted the policy six years ago when she got tired of seeing kids bringing chips and soda. According to her, it’s a common practice in Chicago. And according to a district spokesperson, that’s okay.

“While there is no formal policy, principals use common sense judgment based on their individual school environments,” Monique Bond wrote in an email. “In this case, this principal is encouraging the healthier choices and attempting to make an impact that extends beyond the classroom.”

The ban has had two effects. First, more government money funneled to the school lunch provider. And second, ironically, less students eating the meals. The Tribune explains the not-so-shocking details:

Any school that bans homemade lunches also puts more money in the pockets of the district’s food provider, Chartwells-Thompson. The federal government pays the district for each free or reduced-price lunch taken, and the caterer receives a set fee from the district per lunch.

At Little Village, most students must take the meals served in the cafeteria or go hungry or both. During a recent visit to the school, dozens of students took the lunch but threw most of it in the garbage uneaten. Though CPS has improved the nutritional quality of its meals this year, it also has seen a drop-off in meal participation among students, many of whom say the food tastes bad.

“Some of the kids don’t like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast,” Little Village parent Erica Martinez told the Tribune. “So it would be a good idea if they could bring their lunch so they could at least eat something.”

“This is such a fundamental infringement on parental responsibility,” J. Justin Wilson, a senior researcher at the Washington-based Center for Consumer Freedom, told the Tribune. (The center is partially funded by the food industry, the news outlet reports.)

“Would the school balk if the parent wanted to prepare a healthier meal?” he added. “This is the perfect illustration of how the government’s one-size-fits-all mandate on nutrition fails time and time again. Some parents may want to pack a gluten-free meal for a child, and others may have no problem with a child enjoying soda.”

You will only eat government approved food! We will feed you – you do not need to choose your own food – we will tell you what to eat, what to wear, where to live, what your job will be, who you can talk to, what car to drive, how many children you can have, what their numbers will be – yes I said numbers. It’s over unless we wake up and make some changes we “really” can believe in.

Our school lunches are between 650-950 calories with 8-25% of the calories being from fat. This is NOT a healthy lunch. I wish so bad our schools actually offered healthy food, even just a salad/fruit bar would be so nice. Perhaps the school figures the food tastes so nasty the kids only eat 1/2 of it lol.

Some parents shouldn’t have the right to be “parents” those are the 1%”s that are making the marxist Governement react (cause they feel they can get away with it). Argue the point and they wil say “what you want children to starve”? If I had the time I would homeschool my daughter but, since I HAVE to work she is at the mercy of HS teachers with tenure!!!! Lose money or holiday/“sick” time if I go to a parent teacher conference!!!!! Grades K-6 Reading writing and Math. Grades 7-9 Math History and Science. Grades 10-12 Math Reading Writing and History (only social programs should be Resumee Building and College entrance and Music/Performing arts). Sports/ROTC should be done in the community like Little League and Boy Scouts!

He flourished and went on to college .. a private school not state institution even then, graduated and is a responsible adult.

It is no coincidence that as universal health care dreams loom, that government entities seek to exert more and more control over things they deem as helping control costs. Undoubtedly they will tout the benefits to some children as a mask for the real desires to control peoples diets. This is a stepping stone to other more scary developments to control costs under the mask of “caring” for people. It is the beginning of the birth pangs of more and more government intrusion and control, the likes of which would certainly have our founders grieving over the state of our republic.

The judge even noted the study as flawed. Any study that shows second hand smoke being more dangerous than what a smoker inhales, you know it was forged. So there was the wedge to the door….the judge threw it out and the EPA adopted it without congress. So when the EPA or FDA determines what is good for you and what isn’t good luck, we santioned them. By the way, its against the law to smoke tobacco in parks in San Diego…however, its OK to smoke pot…..

When we see these issues, imho, it’s good to contact the school and school district officials. They like to think they’re getting away with this stuff, behind closed doors, and no one knows. Telling them that they‘re getting National attention is what they don’t want to hear. Telling them that America doesn‘t like what they’re trying to pull off is something they don’t want to hear even more. Contact info for schools and school boards is very easy to find on-line.

@ INFECTED…..Your concerns are most valid if you look at any and I mean ANY dictator, or communist leaning style of government that seeks to “promote” the welfare of the masses, they can only do so at the expense of their liberties. Of course they and those sympathetic to their cause don’t often see it that way (unless of course you have an evil intent to gain control and use these things as a ruse, which has and still does happen at the higher levels of authority typically with the “middle management and foot soldiers being sincere believers) because their conscience gives them the approval that they are doing what is good and right for society on a whole. They use the same cover of deception that it needs to be done for the overall good in one way or another typically parading personal accounts of stories that play on the emotions sympathetic to their ultimate causes and agendas.

You tell me what’s going on from the list above. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see where things are being pushed intentionally. People simply have difficulty connecting the dots to very powerful and wealthy people to believe it is possible to do such things, but our founders knew all to well it is not as hard as people think. Our freedom loving mentality fostered by attitudes that take those liberties for granted have dulled us to the fact that they are always under attack and to the manner in which they are assaulted. People just don’t want to hear, know or learn about the 800 pound gorilla in front of us for the most part. Heck most of those involved have even stated so much from their own mouths because they no longer fear exposure due to the indifference of so many………

Go to CountrySide Homesteading and Small Stock Journal Vol. 95, Number 2 March/April 2011 page 72 and read about the Food Safety Modernization Act. From Sebelius’ HHS there is no absolute right to consume or to feed children any particular food and there is no deeply rooted historical tradition of unfettered access to foods of all kinds. This is unbearable tyranny. Tarnation, there ain’t no deeply rooted historical tradition of freedom and liberty. It is less than three hundred years old. We cannot be politically correct anymore. That is what this is all about collecting the fee for the “Connected” company(ies), because the set fee can be counted on and I would not be surprised that it is more than what food is actually consumed.

you know i worked in many school cafaterias, back in 1990 through 2000. we were told to accept anyones application for free or reduced lunch, we were told that if we had our ratio up, we (the school district) would be able to obtain more benefits, meaning more federal funding for the poor unfortunates who really need it. then they started having a food program during the summer for lunch and we were told just to feed whoever showed up, don’t even ask about if they were eligible, just feed them.

you want to blame someone for the increase in diabetes in our country, look at the schools. our little soldiers (our children) have been brought up to believe that going to school is important and they have the best teachers to teach them how to behave, how to learn and how to eat. mothers, fathers you are giving an early death to your children, your heirs will probably die before you do. wake up.

They closed it and tryed to stop home lunches. There were protests and the students orgainized. We had non-eat-ins. The school Admin then took five leaders of the protest and made examples of them. In the end the only result was that less kids paid for a school lunch and more of us just left during lunch (which was against the rules.) This is Progressive insanity at its best because it involves children, lifestyle regulations and tax-payer’s money! What’s interesting about this is that those who get the “free” lunches must qualify–and you have to be dirt poor to qualify. This is just putting money in the pocket of the provider and the government while shifting the burden to the middle class. I remember school lunches being more expensive than my mother packing my lunch–so she packed lunches. We were not wealthy–but too wealthy according to the government!

They should focus more on educating our children and not so much on our kids diets. Since they want to control what they eat, maybe they should start providing our kids health coverage since some of us can’t afford what our employers offer. If you want to pack a lunch (which would cost MORE than a free public lunch) then I think the state needs to say out. Here in Virginia, the school system gets money per free lunch or per free breakfast. The cafeteria makes sure that every child on free lunch eats and even packs a free bag lunch for field trips. No one cares if it is eaten or thrown in the trash. They only care that they get a total of free lunches to be reembursed by the federal government.
AND, the cafeteria workers outright encourage students to purchase extra sweets and chips because that money helps pay the salary of the cafeteria workers.

I wonder how much of a profit margin the school makes off of their crappy lunches?

Aha! Chartwells is gonna make out like bandits with this home-lunch ban.

Our school contracted with Chartwells. Its effing terrible. My freshman year of college, I lost a bunch of weight because I could only stomach one Chartwells meal a day.

Chartwells also has a monopoly over catering on campus. If you want to have your event catered by, say, Pizza Hut, you have to pay Chartwells a kickback or they won’t let you serve the food. Its infuriating. Especially if you hate TERRIBLE food.
