Food Hypocrisy? Michelle Obama Caught Ordering Cheeseburger and Fries

First Lady Michelle Obama is supposed to be the figurehead for healthy eating. She has recently lead the White House’s charge to get kids to make better food choices, encouraging them to trade in fried foods for fresh ones. But in Milwaukee, WI yesterday campaigning for Democratic Senator Russ Feingold*, Mrs. Obama took part in some “eat as I say, not as I do.”

From the local NBC affiliate, WTMJ:

First lady Michelle Obama thrilled staff and customers when she made a surprise visit to Miss Katie‘s Diner on the city’s near west side.

Mrs. Obama met her cousin and her cousin’s daughter for lunch at the restaurant.

Jennifer Laschen waited on their table.  “I’ve been doing this for 25, 30 years and I’ve never had such a thrill, such an honor to wait on a first lady in my life,” she said.

Laschen said the first lady ordered a cheeseburger and fries.  Mrs. Obama took pictures and signed autographs for the staff at the diner and their customers. [Emphasis added.]

*The story has been updated to reflect that Mrs. Obama was campaigning for Russ Feingold, not Tom Barrett.

Better yet, now it’s, “Politician, govern thyself!”…which, as we can see in nearly all politicians these days, isn’t going over too well. Those who cannot govern themselves should not be charged to govern others.

Hang on, guys – Now, I’m not one to support this movement of super-cleansing your plate and eating only leafy greens and raw fruits all day, but she orders one cheeseburger and you are labeling her a hypocrite?

Hasn’t the talk about healthy eating been enjoying the bad things in moderation? I was always under the impression (and even Beck says this) it’s not about what you eat but how often you eat it. Someone who eats at fast food everyday is going to be unhealthy, but someone who cooks the right foods, enjoys a balanced diet and occasionally grabs a burger at the local mom-and-pop isn’t going down the same hole. Any doctor will tell you it’s okay to enjoy a bit of fried foods as long as your normal lifestyle still sits with fresh foods and healthy diets.

It is one burger – I think even MO deserves to treat herself to some good eats every once in awhile.

After all, Tofurkey and soy snaps can only taste good for so long…

She could eat 10 double beef whoppers with cheese every day inside the WH ( look at the size of her ass me thinks she has been)and go out in public and eat like a friggin rabbit but Nooooo they could care less what the little people think. Can you imagine what would happen if “W” got caught having a beer out on the campaign trail after advocating against drunk driving. You clowns on the left are suffering from major brain damage due to kool aid overdose. The left is digging their own grave ( the only real Shovel ready project)

Author22, The adults are having the conversation. All I was trying to do was initiate conversation – apparently you missed that boat.

Mutt, I love the name calling – really lends credence to your argument. First, I’m not a leftist – very far from it. One post doesn’t decide who I am – know the person not the post. Second, the idea of W going out for a beer after advocating against drunk driving depends on how he gets home. Having a beer doesn’t automatically qualify you for Drunk Driving – you have to get behind the wheel first, so if he has a designated driver take him home, there’s no harm in having a few.

Stands, you can still have ice creams and coffees and still be a fit person. Again, it’s all about the attitude and the approach. Myself, I eat a meat-heavy diet, but I offset it with grains, vegetables, fruits etc. I still enjoy my ice creams and my sodas, too (some even on a daily basis), but I exercise and keep watch over my health as well. There is still no harm in enjoying the good stuff in life as long as you don’t over-consume. Oh, and the “bubble-butt” is commonly a carb-heavy issue. She needs to cut back on the pastas, not the ice creams.

JJ and Bob, refer to upper posts for details – it’s all about moderation – you can enjoy it just not every meal.

      Mutt,
Do you even understand how stupid your comparison with W drinking a beer really is? Did you stop to think for even a second? “W” is an admitted alcoholic, who gave up drinking at 40 as a part of his religious conversion experience. He was also the candidate for President, no the First Lady. So maybe if he was caught drinking that would be a little bit of an issue. How in the world would that be in any substantive way comparable with the First Lady eating a burger?

I have no problem with anyone eating or drinking what they want, its thier choice, thats the beauty of living in America. But when you go out there using your influence and position to promote, as she does, “healthy” eating and such and is pushing it to the point of shoving it down our throats, which is causing schools, resturants, and even cities/towns to take away these choices because we individuals, and especially parents, arent “smart” enough or “responsible” enough to make these choices for ourselves and our children, then that makes you a big time hypocrit!!! Liberals like that seem to forget they live in a glass house when they shove thier elitist, “they know better than us because us regular folks just aint smart or responsible enough (Homer Simpson)” crap down our throats and use it to further legislate and regulate our freedoms under the guise of safety or well-being. That why liberals have no character or class. Just like Bill Clinton – “I didnt have sex with that woman.” And the list could go on and on.

Wow Publius, typical liberal move; Can’t argue on the subject matter at hand, so changes the subject. Points out how the right has their hypocrits. Yes, we get hypocrits are on both sides and when they are found out, we should call them out at the time it happens, not years later when it does not matter.

That is what we are doing here. The subject at hand is Michelles double standard. She is advocating healthy foods in schools, of which I am not against, but she is advocating taking away the choice from parents and kids, based on “she knows better”. Some school principals are now taking away packed lunches from kids because they don’t meet “the approved foods”. I have no problem in Michelle eating a burger and fries, but don‘t turn around and advocate to us we can’t or we can’t allow our kids to eat a burger and fries because it is not healthy. She needs to be the role model for which she advocates, or shut the heck up.

However, I would ask that you at least make some kind of effort to know what you are talking about–otherwise this whole thing gets a bit tedious. How exactly is the First Lady taking choices away from parents? Is there anything behind this claim, or are you just spouting the same old talking points again and again? Since when does Michelle Obama control the activities of individual school principles?

I would be happy to talk about the issues, but let’s stick to the facts and put the slogans away for a little while.

Let me get this straight, Publiuspencilman, you are equating a problem Rush had some years ago, but no longer has, with the fact that Michelle wants to take MY cheeseburger and fries away from me but is okay eating them herself…..I think that was a s-t-r-e-t-c-h of an example, but it speaks to the desperation the left has defending itself.

@pubicpencil….support your statement about Rush and give a concrete example that he attacked addicts? Seems to me that he admiited to himself and others that he had a problem and fixed it. It’s called sefl awareness. He got a hand up not a hand out and never blamed anyone else for his problem nor asked anyone else to pay for it. It’s takes an individual with humility and courage to admit when they are wrong and no matter where you stand, that commands respect.

I will admit one inaccuracy: this quote comes from Limbaugh’s television show, not from his radio show:

“Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. … And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.”

Yes, he admitted to being addicted… after he was caught by a number of news organizations, who reported that he was under investigation after being outed by a former housekeeper.
      http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/News/10/03/rush.drugs/

Is this enough for you? Exactly how does the “hand up not a hand out” formula fit with this Blaze article’s attack on Michelle Obama? You know, sometimes the stock talking points do not actually fit with the conversation, so you might want to adjust your programming.

Having had a son use drugs in high school I can say with conviction, you won’t find many addicted people admitting there is a problem unless they die (too late), hit bottom or get caught. There was a serious problem, it was handled and all is good. The fact still remains if cheeseburgers and fries are bad choices you should hold yourself to a higher standard and set the example instead of preaching to me that I need to do it. Butter, sugar – none of her business just like her eating a cheeseburger and fries is none of my business. I want a big a _ _, my business – she wants a big a _ _, her business. The end (ha-ha)

I’m all for that CaitlynsDad, and for the record I only mentioned Rush and others ran with it.
Let’s get back to the main point, which is that a lot of people here are manufacturing phony outrage because they erroneously think that Michelle Obama wants to take away everyone’s hamburgers but her own. Of course, no one has actually offered any evidence that the First Lady has ever said that no responsible adult is allowed to eat a hamburger–that’s purely a fabrication of the bloodthirsty minds here that want something to attack, even if it‘s just someone’s lunch order.

By the way, for all you out there who like to call yourselves real “conservatives”–it’s a pretty low (and petty) blow to attack the First Lady of the United States for what she had for lunch. What ever happened to chivalry? Perhaps some of you should go back and read your Edmund Burke again.

And lastly, those of you who call yourself Christians should ask yourself whether you are entirely without sin–whether you have always lived up to your own high standards. Of course, we all backlide occasionally (including Rush Limbaugh, which was my point with that example), but I think breaking your diet to eat a hamburger is not quite an issue of national importance.

Good way to clarify your point, Publius, and for the record (you may not have seen it) but a little bit further up I made it clear that, in my view, it’s none of my business, or anyone else’s, what MO has for lunch. And for that same reason, I won‘t detail what’s on my dinner menu for tonight, except to point out that the New York – Texas game is on.

I am not a fan of Mr. or Mrs. Obama. However, If Michelle ate everything on the plate and, the hamburger bun was made from whole grain flour while the fries were cooked in vegetable oil without any transfats, then, it was a balanced and healthful meal. I almost forgot. Was the cheese cheddar or american? If it was american cheese, then it was not a healthful meal. Now let’s look at where the meal was prepared. A diner. What are the chances that that diner prepared the meal in a healthful fashion, I.E.: The points I made, earlier? And, what are the chances that Mrs. Obama ate evrything on the plate? I would venture to say, slim to none. So, Midwest Belle, You get a gold star for an astute observation. By the way. A while back, the Whitehouse chef was on television, cooking a meal made up of vegetables which supposedly came from Mrs. Obama’s garden at The Whitehouse. Later it was disclosed that the vegetables did not come from that garden. So what else is new about today’s topic? OH. WHAT A SURPRIZE!!!!!! And another thing. Did you notice that there were two burgers on the bun? Also a surprize. I guess that I should follow her example. What shall I have for lunch? Let’s see. Two tripple bacon cheeseburgers, a pastrami on rye, fries, onion rings, potato salad, two hotdogs and, of course, pie; Shepherd’s Pie. Since Mrs. Obama did not have dessert or a beverage, I will forego those. Now, Midwest Belle. In honor of our First Lady, I ask you to have a lunch which is similar to mine.

      The Spark,
“Three, she want to take these things away from them and force them, basically, to be fit.” This is just plain wrong. While there have been a number of local initiative to ban certain foods, or trans-fats, or whatever, I have not heard any of that coming from the First Lady. She advocates good parenting as the solution–do you object? Here, maybe you should read this article if you actually care about knowing what you are talking about:
      http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/11/dining/11lady.html

From that article: “White House officials say the focus on healthy living will be a significant item on Mrs. Obama’s agenda, which already includes supporting working families and military spouses. As the nation battles an obesity epidemic and a hard-to-break taste for oversweetened and oversalted dishes, her message is clear: Fresh, nutritious foods are not delicacies to be savored by the wealthy, but critical components of the diets of ordinary and struggling families.

Sounds pretty autocratic huh? You should be particularly angry about the sections of a article in which she talks about making decisions about feeding healthy foods to her children. How dare she be a parent!

Even better, here is how the article ends:
“Mr. Scheib cautioned that no one should expect the Obamas to upend their lifestyle. “This is not to say they’re going to be eating rice cakes and tofu three meals a day, not at all,” he said. In fact, Mrs. Obama cheerfully admits to an occasional hankering for fast food. It’s all about eating in moderation, she said, emphasizing the kind of flexibility that might make it easier for people to relate to her message.”

You see, she needs to keep US healthy so that we can pay more towards an even better health care for ALL of Congress so that in turn THEY can continue to completely indulge while the rest of us will get to choose between carrots and broccoli. IF we’re lucky. I wonder if her husband has quit smoking yet :)

Somebody call the food police, right after the election police get done with her. That’s right, the laws will only apply to US.

She ordered a burger and fries. Most nutritionists in the world will tell you that such meals, when eaten infrequently, will not harm you as long as you normally eat a balanced diet and you exercise.
      ==========

But that’s the whole point! She wants the goverment to STOP people from making that choice themselves. Anyone except a food nut, knows that its not the food itself that’s bad, its gorging yourself on it.

She however is on ANTI-fast-food campaign. Note, she’s not on a “don’t binge on fast food” campaign. She’s on a fast-food demonization campaign and actually BANNING it from certain locations and circumstances.

      That’s why its hypocritical.

I’m sorry, I’ve innocently entered into enemy territory, and I’ll not bother you again, but I’d rather have “:a big butt” than be cursed with a mean spirit.
