Food Prices Skyrocket: Highest Since 1974

WASHINGTON (AP) — Higher energy costs and the steepest rise in food prices in nearly four decades drove wholesale prices up last month by the most in nearly two years. Excluding those categories, inflation was tame.
The Producer Price Index rose a seasonally adjusted 1.6 percent in February, the Labor Department said Wednesday. That’s double the 0.8 percent rise from the previous month. Outside of food and energy costs, the core index ticked up 0.2 percent, less than January’s 0.5 percent rise.
Food prices soared 3.9 percent last month, the biggest gain since November 1974. Most of that increase was due to a sharp rise in vegetable costs, which increased nearly 50 percent. That was the most in almost a year. Meat and dairy products also rose.
Energy prices rose 3.3 percent last month, led by a 3.7 percent increase in gasoline costs.
David Resler, an economist at Nomura Securities, said the jump in prices is likely temporary, echoing remarks made by the Federal Reserve on Tuesday. Much of the increase in food prices was due to winter freezes in Florida, Texas and other agricultural areas, Resler said. Turmoil in the Middle East is a major reason that motorists are facing higher gas prices.
“Both food and gasoline prices are going to stop rising so rapidly,” Resler said.
But John Ryding, an economist at RDQ Economics, disagreed, noting that consumers will feel the impact for some time.

“We do not buy the Fed’s reassurance that these pressures will be temporary and we believe the public, seeing these strong increases in food and energy … will not be marking back down their inflation expectations,” Ryding said.
Gas prices spiked in February and are even higher now. The national average price was $3.56 a gallon Tuesday, up 43 cents, or 13.7 percent, from a month earlier, according to the AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge. Rising demand for oil in fast-growing emerging economies such as China and India has pushed up prices in recent months. Unrest in Libya, Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries has also sent prices higher.
But economists expect the earthquake in Japan to lower oil prices for the next month or two, which should temper increases in wholesale prices in coming months. Japan is a big oil consumer, and its economy will suffer in the aftermath of the quake. But as the country begins to rebuild later this year, the cost of oil and other raw materials, such as steel and cement, could rise.
Oil prices fell sharply Tuesday as fears about Japan’s nuclear crisis intensified. Oil dropped $4.01, or 4 percent, to settle at $97.18 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Prices rose 1 percent for apparel, the most in 21 years. Costs also increased for cars, jewelry, and consumer plastics.
There was little sign of inflationary pressures outside of food and energy. Core prices have increased 1.8 percent in the past 12 months.
Separately, the Commerce Department said Wednesday that home construction plunged to a seasonally adjusted 479,000 homes last month, down 22.5 percent from the previous month. It was lowest level since April 2009, and the second-lowest on records dating back more than a half-century.
The building pace is far below the 1.2 million units a year that economists consider healthy.

The wizards of Wall Street are patting themselves on the back for being able to borrow from the government at 0.125% and lend back to the same government at 3%, which makes it pretty hard not to make record profits, and our political masters keep spewing the mantra that we are in a “recovery”.
The truth is that this recession never ended, there has been no real recovery, unemployment is at record levels when measured consistent with pre-Clinton standards, inflation is being systematically understated by over-weighting segments that always go down in price over time (mostly tech) while under-weighting anything that increases in price (e.g., health care, food, clothing, energy, transportation, etc, etc), the US Dollar is incredibly fragile, and mandatory spending now exceeds total federal revenues…..but everything is A-O-K according to the prolefeed media…..

Of course, now they price stuff different so as to scam you… different weights for bread… different sizes of cans/containers for the old price, milk priced different for fat-free,2%, 1%, Vit. D, 5-gal. containers that are really 4.7 gal., Meat injected with 10-15% liquids, soup cans almost the same size as the old tomato paste cans, standard tuna cans are now 5 Oz. instead of 6, the net amount of chips in a bag just keeps getting smaller, so the price can stay the same, etc. Anything to make it appear that stuff doesn’t really cost more, when it is actually overall up about 20% over last year in most things. Not to mention (except @ Food4Less) register “errors” are rampant. It’s a joke about the “inflation rates” anyway… not to include food and energy prices… like we all are buying “heavy equipment” and TV’s everyday.

They can’t lock you up for having a garden. That provision does not exist under the passed Food Safety Act. Plant away. Besides, it’s not like they have the actual power to dictate to us what we can and cannot do, outside of what little power we *allow* them under the Constitution. I’m aware of your cowardly bomb throwing posting technique, that you are not man enough to come back and hold a discussion as an intellectual human being with anybody, you simply lob crap and run. With that as a given, I’ll say this for the lurking audience.
What you’re buying with any emergency food storage package is two things, nutrition over a given time and a very long shelf life. Nutrition is more than buying red kernel wheat and a grinder, that will get you dead quick after an emergency. When you buy 2 weeks worth of food, where that food lasts 7 to 12 years, which is a large variety of foods, for $199 along with a carrying pack that (look it up at a sports store) alone goes for around 80 to 100 dollars, well, you are actually getting one hell of a good deal.
You can go cheaper, clearly. You can can produce and meats, and once the initial steam canner is paid for you’re only paying negligible costs for lids and mason jars. But if you don’t have that kind of time, well, 200 bucks for 2 weeks of food that you can store ~10 years without spoilage is a great deal.
Those who actually pay attention to food storage techniques and costs, and who know something about the topic in general, of course realize this. It’s a shame Broker has to be such an amateur troll, he could probably do better if he put better effort.

I recently questioned ‘TheBlaze.com Readers Support’ about why I had a ligitimate post removed from a Blaze post. There was nothing vulgar, nothing violent about the post. The following was the reply I received from the “moderator”…..
Elizabeth H., Mar-15 09:33 (EDT):
There are a few reasons why your comment may not show up. The first and most common reason that it may not show up is because in order to serve the massive amount of “sick freaks” like you that visit TheBlaze.com, comments on articles are not updated in real-time. It may take up to 5 minutes for your comment to show up on the site (though usually less than that). Please do not re-submit the same comment.
The second reason your comment may not show up is if you post something that your fellow users deem offensive or inappropriate. In these circumstances, if enough people flag the comment, an administrator may choose to delete your comment. TheBlaze.com staff reserves the right to delete and/or moderate comments on the site at their discretion – there is no appeal process and your comment is gone forever.
In the first circumstance, your comment just takes a few minutes to show up on the article, but in the second, your comment was already displayed on the site and action was taken to remove it.

Now, I know there are some trojan horses that come to the Blaze to take cheap shots at our postings,,,but I’m not one of them. I am, without a doubt, a true conservative.
I don’t know who this moderator is,,,,but I would suspect a ‘trojan horse’ in place at the Blaze. Furthermore, I find it offensive to be called a “sick freak” for making conservative comments on a conservative blog with fellow conservatives. You, also, should be offended because it give a strong indication that you are included in the ‘sick freak’ label.
I thought you should know why, maybe, some of your well written pieces MAY be disappearing.

Posted on March 16, 2011 at 3:05pmI am a driver for a grocery chain. I predict that in the near future grocery trucks will be high-jacked in large cities. I have already told my employer that I am not a Reginald Denny and if stopped by a mob, I will drive out no matter what or who is in the way. I do not intend to wear bricks. Plan for the worst, pray for the best.

Posted on March 16, 2011 at 3:14pmBut never fear, there is NO inflation, so the solution is to give up eating, heating/cooling your home, using any electricity, driving to work, watching TV, buying any sort of medicine, and you will then agree with the Fed and the O regime that we are better off this year than last. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

“They can’t lock you up for having a garden. That provision does not exist under the passed Food Safety Act. Plant away. Besides, it’s not like they have the actual power to dictate to us what we can and cannot do, outside of what little power we *allow* them under the Constitution. If they assume more power, they invalidate their claim to office. We do not have to obey unjust laws.”
They do, mistakenly, believe that they have the power to do this.

Posted on March 16, 2011 at 3:24pmWell working in produce I know that Tomatoes went up this year due to freezing in Mexico, this was the first freeze they had since 1957… What happen to “global warming”? But that to an extent is beside the point. What we need to do is stop being dependent on other countries. We became great by using our natural resources, went we stop that we started to fall. United we stand, divided we fall seems to be a concept too many folk have forgotten about.
I am just glad that I am a hunter, I wont be in the government food lines.

Report Post »I wouldn’t be offended by the term “sick freak” that was used in the email back to you. The writer of the email was Liz, and I believe she is one of the producers of Glenn’s show. Glenn has been calling his viewers & listeners for years “sick twisted freaks”, which I believe he uses as a jest to the progressive left that think that is what we all are. It’s kind of like his call sign, and her putting that in quotes was all in good humor. I take that as a compliment because I know that it probably drives the liberals up the wall b/c they have NO sense of humor. So please try not to be offended by that one little term, it was mean’t as a compliment to all conservatives.
Have a nice day!

You better still be waiting in line at those government sponsored food lines. And look malnourished. If people think that you have food they might break in.

Posted on March 16, 2011 at 11:11pmYou don’t need to watch the news to know that prices have been going steadily up for a while now. Just go to the grocery store sometime. Even your basic necessities are getting out of hand. A gallon of milk just shouldn’t cost $4 or $5. That’s insane.
