‘Forced Unionization’: SEIU Collects Union Dues From Disabled Kids’ Medicaid Checks

Robert and Patricia Haynes care for their two adult children, who because of their cerebral palsy rely on others to feed and change them.
Robert and Patricia Haynes take care of their two children, who at the ages of 30 and 34 are more like children in adult bodies. That’s because they both have cerebral palsy, and rely on their parents to feed and change them — and likely will for the rest of their lives.
The Haynes family receives monthly checks from the state of Michigan through Medicaid, allowing the parents to care for their son and daughter themselves instead of institutionalizing them. But because a Michigan law classifies Robert and Patricia as “home health care workers,” they are considered public workers and therefore automatic union members — meaning the SEIU gets a $30 cut of the family’s Medicaid subsidy as union dues.
“We’re not home health care providers — we’re parents taking care of our children,” Melissa Haynes told Detroit Fox affiliate WJBK-TV:
But that’s not how the state of Michigan sees it. According to Michigan Capitol Confidential, it’s an example of “forced unionization” under a plan enacted five years ago.
The Washington Examiner reported:
Michigan Department of Community Health Director Olga Dazzo explained the process in to her members of her staff [sic]. “MQC3 basically runs the program for SEIU and passes the union dues from the state to the union,” she wrote in an email obtained by the Mackinac Center. Initiated in 2006 under then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm, D-Mich., the plan reportedly provides the SEIU with $6 million annually in union dues deducted from those Medicaid subsidies.
Robert, a retired police officer, told WJBK it’s not a matter of being pro-union or anti-union.
“It wasn’t a choice, we were just told this is what’s going to happen,” Patricia Haynes told the station.
They said even though they themselves are doing alright financially, they could certainly use the extra $30 a month to care for their kids — as other families under similar circumstances no doubt could as well.
And despite allegedly belonging to the SEIU, Robert told Michigan Capitol Confidential his family is receiving no actual benefits from the union:
“Nothing,” Haynes said. “We’re not getting anything from them. We’ve tried to contact them, and they don’t even bother to respond. I don’t even know what they could do to help. Considering the dues money we’re sending them, maybe they should come over and babysit our kids so we could have one night out.
“We take care of our kids at home,” Haynes continued. “There aren’t any working condition issues. There are no raises to negotiate. There aren’t any union issues involved. But the money keeps being taken out of our checks anyway.”
According to the Examiner, Granholm’s successor, Gov. Rick Snyder, R-Mich., has “already ended a similar scheme to provide unions with new ‘public employees’ in the area of child care.” A state bill to end the practice for all public sector unions passed the House but has stalled in the Senate.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 6:19pmSame thing in Massachusetts, except, they give you a choice of either joining the union and paying dues or not join the union and pay an “agency fee” which is a percentage of your gross pay. You CAN’T opt out if you want to keep your job.

I sure wish we could get all of the conservative talk-show hosts together long enough to rally the listeners to ALL OF THEIR PROGRAMS and organize a huge rally on Washington…Wouldn’t we make a true force to be reckoned with? I think so! I see it as so LARGE that even the main-stream media couldn’t ignore us! All the hosts “boast” about “their” patriotism…it would certainly be nice to see them lay down their egos long enough to save our NATION! Nah…what was I thinking?…all the cities across our great country would have to be set a blaze before they would ever consider such an event..then, it will be too late!.

Those outside that media have discussed the idea of conservative talk show hosts getting together as chums for quite some time.
The problem is, all commentary and news media are highly competitive, brutal and ruthless toward each other.
With 24/7/365.25 news and commentary, it’s not just their egos in the way, they’re in it for the money.
Michigan has a serious problem and it’s only going to get worse until the productive citizens stand up to socialism and kill it. Something that will take years because socialists NEVER give up until the society they’re infiltrating is ruined, then they move on to the next pile of money.

I think Stossel did a report on it. If the state finds out you‘re watching someone else’s kids in your own home, they hit you for union dues. Posted on November 16, 2011 at 9:55pmI live in Washington State, a forced unionism state, and I am the care provider for my disabled adult daughter. My daughter requires 24 hour supervision and care because of her disability. She could live in a “Group Home” or an “Adult Family Home” but I prefer to keep her at home with us for as long as possible. I am 69 years of age, and she is 40. I receive a small Medicaid Personal Care Provider check as payment for her care. If she resided in a Group Home, Medicaid would pay around $2000 for her to live there.
Report Post »The state with-holds $30.00 from each month’s check for SEIU union dues. I refuse to become a Union member, but that doesn’t matter. Union dues are deducted anyway, because it is the law in this state. Washington is NOT a right to work state. Parent care providers are treated exactly like other home care workers, and we are forced to pay union dues (deducted from our check by the state and given to SEIU) and soon we will be required by new legislation, to take continuing education classes on a yearly basis, even though we have cared for our children since birth. Go figure! This new legislation, voted in just this month, requires the state to pay for continuing education classes for all union members. Non-union members (myself and many other parent care givers) must pay for these required classes out of pocket, or JOIN the union. We pay the same dues as Union MEMBERS, they get the classes free.We must pay out of pocket. FORCED UNION MEMBERSHIP along w/ forced d

Take that group after a conract is tentatively agreed to…the union goes out and tells them that if they don’t vote yes they will have to strike and if you cross the lines the union can doc their pay as a fine for crossing the stike line!! I paid union dues every week, and got no benefits. I had no choice other than don’t work there. I couldn’t find another job, so changing jobs was out of the question. I didn’t vote the union in, why did I have to pay union dues? I think there should be a mandatory re-vote every year, for the new employees to weigh in on whether they want the union or not. Once a place is unionized, there is seldom a chance to not be union. As for parents being charged union dues, maybe they should sue for more SSI, or whatever it’s called. If union people can go on strike to get more pay, they should too. Raise the pay by about $100 to offset the union dues…..I know, not realistic. It’s not like they can strike…what are they going to do? Not take care of their children? Put them in a home? That would be heartless and these piece o’ cr@p unions know it. They are exploiting parents.

Sorry but I’ve worked in union shops here in Boston. If you don‘t join the union you can’t work. Would love to know where this union of your is.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 7:42pmAgain, WA is a forced union state. I went from a non-union position to a union position because some of my co-workers pulled that shady ‘card check’ deal and didn’t tell other co-workers that when they signed “for information” that they were authorizing the union to represent us.
And if I don’t pay at least minimum dues then I lose my job. To have money go to a ‘charity of my choice’ would require a legal battle because I prefer charities like the NRA, that liberals don’t support.
So AGAIN, unions are like Nazis.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 6:01pmI wonder how much money the ex-governor got from SEIU, how many vacations he had paid for in the name of fact-finding trips paid for by SEIU. Democrats must be the stupidest people on earth. They keep voting the same corrupt people in office over and over again. When is America going to wake up?

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 11:35amOur former Gov., Jennifer Granholm was a huge union supporter. She also signed a law requiring day care workers that were watching more than 6 children in they’re homes to join a union. Our new Gov. was able to get rid of that one. The only good thing I have to say about Ms. Granholm is that since she was born in Canada she will never be able to run for President.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 5:55pmThe SEIU is indicative of what unions have become. They are some of the best supporters of that Marxist… obama. That support alone has caused me to be more and more against them. The fact that they get money in this illegal fashion shows their crookedness and the corrupt nature of democrat-run America. Down with the SEIU. American citizens have to fight this tyranny.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 5:55pmThis is EXACTLY why I left Michigan .. the unions run the state .. and they are running it into the ground .. them and the intitlement class that keeps putting in their (democrat) candidates into office and keeps them there.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 6:08pmThis is why we don’t need unions in our government or as government workers. Disgust. I don’t want my federal tax dollars (medicare) going to unions, but tax payers have no choice.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 6:20pmDon‘t forget that the biggest heartburn for the unions in WI was that the dues would no longer be withheld from Gov’t workers paychecks. The Gov’t employee would have to write the check themselves – which would cause the worker to wonder what that payment was really worth since it would now be very visible to them rather than hding in a payroll deduction. I dare say there would be a huge receivables problem for the unions. The thug coffers would be emptying at an alarming rate
