Ford Tells Chevy to Pull This Apocalyptic Super Bowl Ad

Ford Asks Chevy to Take Down Super Bowl Ad

While Clint Eastwood‘s halftime speech seems to be the Super Bowl ad that everyone’s talking about, Chevy’s end of the world commercial has been getting good feedback as well.

From everyone except Ford that is, who seems to be the odd man out in this year’s Super Bowl commercial wars.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Chevy’s ad plays on the Mayan-predicted apocalypse that many fear will occur this year. Over the smooth voice of Barry Manilow singing “Looks Like We Made It,” the ad shows a Chevy Silverado driven by a man with dog emerging from the rubble of a post-apocalyptic city. At the commercial’s climax, the man greets other chevy drivers eating Twinkies at a meet-up where he asks “Where’s Dave?”

“Dave drove a Ford,” says a saddened fellow Chevy driver:

Ford did not find the ad funny, and is voicing their opinion on the matter.

Jalopnik reports that Ford had sent letters to NBC and Chevy parent company GM after seeing the ad before last night’s game, asking them to pull the commercial from the broadcast.

No dice.

“We stand by our claims in the commercial, that the Silverado is the most dependable, longest-lasting full-size pickup on the road,” GM Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick said in a press release. “We can wait until the world ends, and if we need to, we will apologize. In the meantime, people who are really worried about the Mayan calendar coming true should buy a Silverado right away.”

Ford Trucks head Spokesperson responded in a statement to Jalopnik:

“The issue with the ad is that ‘Dave’ doesn‘t survive because he’s driving a Ford. They cite R.L. Polk data on longevity — not durability. If you look at R.L. Polk’s data on durability — the same data I just gave you — there are more Ford trucks on the road with more than 250,000 miles.”

“We‘ve made our point and we’ll always defend our products.”

“But this type of a request happens from time-to-time, and now we’ll just let our legal team handle it.”

It will be interesting to see how much the Super Bowl commercial costs Chevy if Ford carries through with a successful lawsuit.

I think the Twinkies were a reference to Zombieland, where (after the world goes to heck) one character spends the entire movie trying to find Twinkies because they remind him of how the world used to be.

Uh, Twinkie isn’t a company, it’s a product. Hostess Brands is their company, and they filed for bankruptcy last month (although they said Twinkie production will continue).

You know those Ford commercials where they have customers enter a press room where they are surprised by a bunch of reporters who are there to ask them about their new Ford vehicle purchase? In one of those commercials the customer mentions that he bought a new Ford (I think F-150) because he wanted to buy from a company that had integrity and didn’t take a bailout? That was their most popular spot, but it didn’t last long and was replaced. Reports said that the ad was discontinued because Government Motors complained about the ad to The-Thief-In-Chief who stole GM from its owners and gave it to the very union that had destroyed the company. I wonder if Ford complained to Comrade Obama about this ad if it would disappear as well? Hmm.

Years ago, when Chevy was using Bob Seger’s “Like a Rock” song in their advertizing, Ford made a commercial for their trucks. It featured a couple of guys sitting in their Ford truck, watching a Chevy truck driver launching a boat. Something happens that causes the Chevy truck to slide down the boat launch and disappear beneath the water. One Ford guy says “Man, that went down fast“ and the other replies ”Yeah, like a rock”. I thought it was hilarious. Chevy cried foul, and Ford pulled that ad. I guess next time Ford should tell them to pound sand.

I don’t exactly understand the Chevy hate in these posts. I think you anger is misplaced. The company may have asked for a bailout, but it was big government who agreed to bailout a private company with taxpayer dollars. If anything you should take it as a lesson, that bush/obama policies and big government interference in the free market instead of letting things take their natural course is a failing concept. Be mad at the private company all you want but the ability to take the money was just a result of big government, right and left. Your anger at GM is analogous to wanting the cops to arrest a drug dealer (government) for selling people bad cocaine. The whole situation is a mute point because cocaine is illegal, as should be government intervention in free enterprise. With that being said, Chevy trucks and SUVs’ drive better and last longer than ford or dodge’s. I own two used car lots in NC and have driven hundreds of vehicles. This is my personal and professional opinion and I have no reason to be biased.

They gave back most of the money – but the majority of the deal was the capital. That capital is tied up in their business and our government owns shares (huht?) of their company. Do the research – in order to get that capital back, their stock price has to basically triple…

@Bible hating, Mengele loving, tree worshiping hippie: Government Motors received $50 Billion in TARP money. $6.7 Billion was in the form of a loan, $30 Billion was used to purchase stock which made the Federal Government a majority owner of GM. The other $13.4 Billion was in an escrow account which GM could use as they pleased. Apparently, it pleased GM to use the escrow account to pay off the loan of $6.7 Billion, and “voila!“ the fine upstanding folks at GM have ”paid off” their loan of $6.7 Billion in full and ahead of time…..using OUR money and pocketing the rest. If only we all could get “loans” like that!
Back in November 2010, when GM put up its IPO at a price of $33, Obama sold off 400 million shares and held onto 500 million shares. Since then, the stock price has gone down, and currently is in the $26 range. To break even, the govt would have to sell at $53/share. In November 2011, the Treasury Dept forecast that WE THE PEOPLE (who did NOT ask to bail out GM and Chrysler) will suffer losses from the automotive bailout of $26.6 Billion. It was originally forecast to be only about half that amount. To make matters worse, a principal underlying reason that the stock has suffered even when the market has gone up, is precisely because the government owns these stocks, and investors are smart enough to realize that at some point, Obama is gonna flood the market with 500 million shares. I wonder what would happen to the US $ if the FED “sold” trilli

That said, i can see why crystler and chevy have the need to beat Ford. I mean seriously the 2012 F150 gets as much horsepower, more torque, payload, and towing capacity while at the same time getting the best gas millage than the chevy, dodge, and toyota. Chevy has long held the title of longest lasting truck. Those are based on registrations of vehicles. A simple fact they’ve advertised for years. Competitive companies often rip on the other guy in ads (cola wars, anyone?), what’s the big deal?
Ford DID take money, in the form of loans, from the govt. a couple years before the meltdown AND they had their hands out for more at the same time GM and Chrysler did. They only declined AFTER seeing the new strings attached. Ford was lucky enough to be in such bad shape that they sold off nearly all their foreign brands before the collapse so they had enough cash to secure loans to keep them afloat. People and the company ad saying they didn’t take money are WRONG. Don‘t give Ford credit they don’t deserve. Ford has made a great comeback, but they were doing worse than GM before the collapse.
The attacks on GM for the Volt are, as yet, unfounded. The one article I’ve read that really examined the reported fire, shows that NHTSA may be to blame for mishandling the crash-tested car. The Volt is a remarkable tech achievement. Just like the Prius, it will take a few years to catch on.
As to the Ford v. Chevy v. Dodge debate; my father was a used car dealer, my brother and his friends are mechanics. They‘ll tell you Dodge’s have lots of probs, esp. w/ the transmission. Ford and Chevy both make good trucks, but the nod always goes to Chevy. My ‘05 Silverado was amazing. Sadly, I won’t buy a new one until the gov is out.

@ LookTowardsTheLight Acronyms are hardly an argument; however, here might be some you’ve not heard of:
      First On Race Day
      Found On Road/Rocks Dominating/Dead

      General Mechanic Course
      Got a Mechanic Coming
      Government Motor Corruption
GiMiC -My personal one I made up after fixing the same issue several times during the week on several GMC 1/2 ton chassis

This all coming from a mechanic who went into the mechanical world with parents who love Chevies and had no real bearing for quality. Each company has quirks and things to improve. Yet I find more Chevies (of newer years) coming in for repairs due to the exact same issue (there is a reason Chevy 1/2 ton trucks went back to drum brakes on the rear for more models after having all wheel disc a few year before that). But that kind of stuff doesn’t get recalled. Like 07 1/2 ton GM master cylinders. Surprisingly though, most the problems I come across are with their 1/2 ton chassis.

@TOM … you really made me laugh with that one.

I have a Ford Hybrid Escape AND a Silverado 1500. The Silverado came with a big rebate and was considerably less expensive than the F150 (which I think is a good looking truck too). Like many of you, I was hesitant to buy a government motors vehicle, especially with the “handout” rebate … but I figured I already paid for it, and I wanted some of my money back.

BTW, the Ford gets slightly better than the published mileage figures, which was a real surprise. For a FWD to get over 33 mpg is pretty impressive. Those guys know what they’re doing, and so far no battery fires.

Was a diehard full size Bronco fan for years
Bought one every 36 to 40 months because something serious always broke
When the last one broke down in 1999 (30 months of ownership), it was in front of a Toyota dealership
Walked in the showroom and told the salesmen, “I’ll take that 2000 4-Runner out front and you can have that black and tan piece of crap parked in the street.”
Still have the same 4-runner, with a little over 176,000 miles
It’s only required 3 sets of new tires, a few oil changes, and just before Christmas 2011, the first brake job & new drive shaft universals
And, it rolls on a LOT less gas

I never do business with companies that try to build themselves up by attacking other companies. One need only look at the quality of leadership in D.C. to the end product results of negative advertising.
G.M. could have done the commerical without attacking it’s competition and got the same message across.
Ford should just come out and tell it like it is Chevrolet does have the longest last trucks on the market because NO ONE BUYS THEM AS WORK TRUCKS. For every one Chevy you see used as a work truck you see 5 fords. Chevys are the bosses truck, the parks and governments parks and recreation truck and the family toy hauler truck. They aren’t build FORD TOUGH and doing actual work wears them out at a much faster pace than a Ford or even a dodge.

I agree that its an obsence amount to spend on a commercial but I bet they make three times as much and can tie back to this commercial. You can’t say that money spent on advertising is pissed away. Its spent there for a reason.

Personally. I have always prefered Chevy’s. When you need to, they are a lot easier to work on (routine maintence especially) and my parents have a had amazing dependability out of their Silverado and Impala. But I won’t buy a Chevy because of the Bailouts. I wont support Government motors

I’m with you…I always loved the GMC Yukons because they were the most technologically advanced trucks. Most of that tech never made it into the Chevy versions. Dodge used to have the best engines, like a decade ago. My uncle, a diesel mechanic all his life, said their engines were by far superior to Chevy and Ford engines but something happened in the last decade. My uncle died 7 years ago but before he died I remember him saying that those in the know would never buy a Dodge diesel again because they changed it and it was garbage.
I have always been a Ford guy…and I love the look of the F350/F450/F550 better than the other brands but now the Ford is the most technologically advanced truck on the road. Add that to the 24,000 lb towing capacity and 3-ton payload capacity… HOOYAH!! Now I just need the 80K for the fully loaded F550 that I want. LOL

I’ve had Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles as well as three Sunbeams, and a couple of Triumphs. Now that I am older and don’t care for the sportier cars I find trucks far more useful. With the exception of one Dodge truck the rest have been Chevys. I’ve driven Fords many times through the years and find the interior ergonomics have always been lacking when compared to the Chevy. Just my humble opinion, and I would like to stick with Chevy, but it will be difficult for me to do in the near future. Most people believe that Ford Motor Company was supposed to be the only major U.S. automaker not in need of a bailout or that Ford never got any government loans unlike GM and Chrysler. That is incorrect. Ford was the first US auto company to go to the Government for a bailout a year before GM and Chrysler so they missed all the bad press. On 6/29/2009 Ford accepted a $5.9 billion loan subsidy under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), their second Government Loan. Back in 2006 before the credit markets collapsed, Ford essentially mortgaged every facility it had in order to borrow $23.5 billion. Ford was not as solid as everyone thinks, they too have had the government help them out, just they missed all the media hype since they had gone first to the Government “Well.” They were already on the recovery path when GM and Chrysler got their hand out. One of the Reason Chrysler needed help: At the time Chrysler was way in the black but they were set back by the departure of Daimler when Daimler left they charged Dodge a $650,000,000 management fee and that crippled Chrysler’s future R&D funds. So they not activly survive the market turn down. GM was poorly managed and had too many brands that were not contributing to the bottom line and were more of an anchor than anything, Hummer, Buick, etc..

Ford hire another ad company and make something equally as clever. It can be done.
