Former CBC Chair: GOP ‘Turning the Clock Back to the Days of Jim Crow’ With Voter ID Laws

A Democratic congresswoman and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus charged Republicans with “turning the clock back to the days of Jim Crow” in a fiery speech Wednesday decrying voter identification laws.
Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) said in a speech on the House floor that the GOP is trying to deny blacks the right to vote, saying “it’s no coincidence that a disproportionate number of these affected voters come from communities of color as well as the poor, the elderly and students,” The Hill reported.
“Having been born and raised in Texas, this certainly looks like a poll tax to me, which those of us remember as a way to prevent African Americans from voting. These voter ID laws have a partisan agenda: seeking to disenfranchise and deny specific populations of voters before they have the opportunity to elect their representatives in government,” Lee said.
Lee, a current member of the Congressional Black Caucus who served as its chair from 2009 to 2011, claimed voter ID laws would prevent 1 in 4 blacks from voting, and 1 in 5 Hispanics and Asian Americans. She said the laws are a return to voter suppression seen in the 2000 presidential election, according to The Hill.
“I came to this floor years ago, after the stolen presidential elections in Florida and Ohio, to protest the results of those two elections that were filled with voter suppression,” she said. “It worked for Republicans before, and so legislators in 42 states in this map of shame have doubled down on these strategies to make it harder for certain communities to vote.”
Lee is just the latest Democrat to invoke Jim Crow as an analogy: Over the summer, both former President Bill Clinton and Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz accused Republicans of trying to inciting a return to such laws. Lee herself also used the comparison last year when discussing Arizona’s immigration law.
Her comments also come one day after reports that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People believes there’s an effort underway to prevent black and Hispanic voters from participating in the 2012 presidential election.

Just like the welfare recipients that don’t want to be drug tested to collect their money. If you aren’t doing drugs, then you have nothing to worry about. When I interview for a new job, I am drug tested. When I vote, I show my ID. Get over it already with the black thing – that ship has sailed a long time ago. I for one am SO OVER the racist accusations.

Asking for ID is not Jim Crow. It denies nobody the right to vote, and states issue non-driver‘s license id’s, many even for free if you’re going to use them for voting purposes. And frankly, if you can’t take the time to get one, or you can’t cough up the 10 dollars it costs to get one in non-paying states, you probably have no business voting in the first place, lacking common sense and such. The only thing ID checking stops is my long dead Scottish great uncle Seamus from pulling a lever for BHO.

But what did the most progressive president of the last century think about minorities? When Lyndon B. Johnson was talking to two governors about civil rights legislation, he said, “I’ll have those [n-word deleted] voting Democratic for the next 200 years.” Looks like he was right.

What they are saying is this:
White people know how to apply for an ID. White people are not criminals, so they don‘t mind having to be ID’d. White people don’t typically have warrants for arrest, so showing ID is no big deal. White people are not suspect as either participant or unwilling witness in crime, so they carry ID.
So they are also saying this:
A large percentage of blacks and minorities are not intelligent enough to apply for a state ID. A large percentage of blacks and minorities are criminals, so they don‘t want to be ID’d. A large percentage of blacks and minorities have warrants for arrest, so showing ID is a big deal. Blacks and minorities are suspect as either participant or unwilling witness in crime, so they don’t carry ID.
Please tell how their position on having voter ID isn’t inferring the above. Please.

Go to your local polls which will be on your voters registration card, and thats that.. The 2008 General election had serious voter fraud

ID does not mean just a driver’s license. Opposing voter ID laws makes as much sense as when our local government had on the ballot a vote for a 1 cent sales tax which would allow us to hire 100 more policemen/women and establish two more community police stations. When first proposed to go on the ballot guess who vehemently opposed this … the local NAACP.

Going to a casino, a club, jury duty, NC-17 movie, getting a gym membership, gun club membership, rent a storage unit, rent a car, write a check, get a savings account, withdrawal money from the savings account, get auto insurance, home insurance, pick up children from daycare, buy guns, ammo, knives, spray paint, alcohol, cigarets, explicit cd’s and video games, buy a house, a boat, a car, a four wheeler, get a loan, get pulled (profiled)over, get a tattoo, adopt a child, adopt a pet, get electricity to you home, get a credit card, sign up for city water/sewer/garbage, apply for a job, get security clearance for the job.
And if you somehow get through life dodging all the things you will need an ID for, some fat cat republican will be there to subject you to dirty air, dirty water and steal your food. That same republican will eventually push you over a cliff in a wheelchair.

BUT……..the ‘voters section’ of the “civil rights division of the DOJ can’t process illegal ballots if there is an ID that is enforced. THAT IS HOW THEY WILL STEAL THE ELECTION FOR OBAMA!
They have produced absentee ballots for dead people, people who do not live in the municipality that the vote is cast, and HAVE EVEN MARKED BALLOTS FOR BLACKS WHO CAN’T READ OR ARE NOT INTERESTED ENOUGH TO EVEN VOTE!
Do you see it? If ID’s are enforced, they can’t do that as easily. ITS NOT EVEN ABOUT BLACKS BEING DENIED THE RIGHT TO VOTE

They are not denied getting a drivers license or id card in any way, shape or form, which by the way is something that is required in MOST cases. This is nothing more than progressives seeking a way to perpetuate more voter fraud, and it has ZERO to do with black people. It has everything to do with ensuring illegals and prisoners get to vote—and in addition, anyone who does vote can vote early and often. The CBC needs to be abolished–they are the epitome of racism and they exist ONLY to keep racism alive and to mete out special rights based on being a minority. (in exchange for votes OF COURSE–nothing is truly free)

A lot of laws have been passed in the last year by Republican State legislators, all of which throw up hurdles to legitimate US citizens voting.
The requirement for a issued government ID is only one (how Republicans love the idea of a government issued ID, but only as far as voting goes!). In Texas they used to accept a student ID as proof of identification, but no more. And who is least likely to have an ID? You know the answer: young voters, elderly voters and minority voters, those most likely to vote Democratic. So they have to go somewhere, wait in line at a State office, pay what amounts to a poll tax, and then in a month they’ll get their government issued ID.
That’s not all. Republican led states are shortening the early voting period. That’s funny, Democrats tend to vote early. And Republicans legislation in some states increases the period between registering to vote and the ability to vote. Hmm. Another hurdle.
This is America, we want as many people to vote as possible? But the Republican strategy is to keep as many people voting as possible. And who are the people who have to jump over these shiny new laws? Overwhelmingly, Democrats of course. Coincidence?

If you “can’t cough up $10″ you can’t vote? That’s a poll tax right? Having to “cough up” $10 to vote? And is it really as easy as “coughing up $10″ if you are an elderly person, not driving, who doesn’t want his or her Medicare cut? And if you don’t have “$10 to cough up” you don’t have “common sense and such”? What is the “and such” part mean?
All these measures do is to throw up hurdles to make those people who are most likely to vote Democrat less likely to vote. That’s why these brand spanking new rules were voted in, exclusively voted in, by Republicans. You know it and I know it. Cut the crap.

I don’t know much about this voting ID thing, but it will most likely turn into a National ID, Just like Social Security numbers, were supposed to be just an account number. Now it is a major form of ID.
I also disagree that everyone should be allowed to vote, but not based on skin color, but based on knowing what they are voting for. There should be some kind of government knowledge test you must pass to get to vote. Maybe put on drivers licenses that you have passed the test. I think this is reasonable, because a lot of people go out to vote, just because Puff Daddy told them to, and who to vote for.

I’m actually in the process of starting a small business where employees will be expected to steal all food from the poor except for dog food. We republicans LOVE when the poor eat dog food. Another department will be tasked with polluting poor neighborhoods air, ensuring shorter life spans. But, if I fill out the voter registration right (meaning I lie on it, like many ppl did in 2008), they would never know I wasn’t a legal voter. Still, I think a voter ID keeps people from voting more than once and it keeps Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, your dead Uncle Buck, and many other questionable people from voting.

How could Barbara Lee be against encouraging these people to move forward with their lives?
