Former D.C. Union Boss: Our Goal Is to ‘Overthrow the Capitalist System and Build Communism’

Anyone who‘s watched Glenn Beck’s show, or his 2010 speech at CPAC, will tell you that the main difference between a progressive and a communist is their attitude toward social change. Progressives believe that society can be guided to evolve into their preferred system; communists believe that a violent revolution is necessary to uproot the existing social order. And if nothing else, the increasingly tense exchanges between members of the Occupy movement (revolution) and supporters of the Obama administration (evolution) show that this distinction is far more than purely academic. Moreover, the open communists are coming out of the woodwork more and more.
Exhibit A: Comments by a former major D.C. Union boss, Mike Golash, made in a video shot by young conservative activists and released this weekend. Golash, who used to run D.C.’s chapter 689 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, and who is responsible for organizing workers on the D.C. metro, had some shockingly honest things to say on-camera:
The Daily Caller brings these highlights of Golash’s speech, which was part of an Occupy gathering:
“Progressive labor is a revolutionary communist organization,” Golash said during an Occupy DC “People’s Assembly” on August 19.
“Its objective,” he added, “is to make revolution in the United States, overthrow the capitalist system and build communism.”
Golash said he and his comrades are “trying to learn something from the historical revolutions of the past: the Russian revolution, the Chinese revolution, the revolutions in Cuba and Eastern Europe.”[...]
“The capitalists — they have their organizations: the FBI, the CIA, the secret police, the military, the army, etc., etc. They have organizations to maintain their power. It’s foolish to think that without a disciplined organization made up not of a few people but of millions and millions of people, [we] can bring down capitalism.”
Golash’s comments are unlikely to surprise observers who believe that Occupy is a nest of communism. However, his support for the concept is notable, insofar as his influence on the D.C. Metro Transit system arguably provides a good case study for how his preferred, communistic system would work.
And how would it work? Not well at all, according to the Virginia-based blog Bacon’s Rebellion:
Go to the ATW website and you’ll see that the union is interested in a lot more than simply improving the wages and working conditions of its members. States Golosh on the president’s page:
Workers’ real leverage against the bosses lies in their ability to shut down production and call their coworkers into the streets. The threat of economic hardship to the bosses and social instability in society causes a real fear in the bosses’ heart. Direct action by workers is the motor that drives us forward to a better standard of living and a more just society, not election results.
If that doesn’t give you pause about selling your SUV and riding the Metro to work, check out the August/September edition of the ATU newsletter. One article writes about New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in the most inflammatory of terms: “It is no coincidence that it is primarily poor black residents that live in the hardest hit areas; slavery and racist laws made sure that the most vulnerable areas of the city are poor black areas.” (Sounds like CNN!) The union also describes the employment of immigrant “guest workers” as “a new kind of slavery.”[...]
Who would you rather trust to get Northern Virginians to their jobs every day — Northern Virginians driving their own cars, or members of a left-wing union led by a communist president? Roads don’t go on strike. Transit unions do.
It gets worse. Back in March, we at TheBlaze cited a Washington Times story demonstrating that the Metro Transit System has been plagued by racial and sexual bias, as well as a ludicrous degree of nepotism:
Ninety-seven percent of the bus and train operators at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority are black, with only six white women out of more than 3,000 drivers, according to Metro documents — a lack of diversity at one of the region’s largest employers that has led to an acknowledgment of failure in affirmative-action documents and spawned a series of lawsuits.[...]
White and Hispanic employees who allege discrimination have found a deaf ear at Metro’s civil rights office, whose 17 employees are black. Until at least 1999, that office tracked complaints via a handwritten ledger on a series of taped-together sheets of paper, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Times. The system “made determining statistics impossible,” said a civil rights employee from the time.[...]
For example, Ms. Townsend said, by 2004, many trains were operating without radios in defiance of federal rules. Other drivers confirmed that was common knowledge. So she authored a study and included a recommendation that Metro start substituting cellphones.
This is the communism Mr. Golash apparently wants. The question is: Will he find an audience for it?

As I have said in the past when someone tells you that they are a union craftsman of any type look else where you will be getting the worst workmanship and labor time 3 times as what is required to do the job properly. Look into the book entitled “Revolutionary Sparks” its mostly about the freedom of the press, yet it also has in the pages discussions on the labor/communist connections from the early days of such unions as AFL and CIO before they merged.

Unions have a history of making the workplace safer and more productive (for employees) for all workers, not just union workers. The benefits and safe conditions YOU work under were fought for by Union Labor. I won’t deny that unions are sometimes their own worst enemies, but don’t let the good they have done be diminished by a rotten few.

you’re almost 100% correct. You’re without a doubt correct in crediting unions for improving workplace safety and jettisoning themworking man into the middle class. The unions are a vital piece on American history. However, their initial greivances / concerns have now been legislated into law.
I was forced to join a union in Illinios in order to work at a tire plant. The leadership encouraged minimum work, using the greivance proceedures, etc. The plant was sold because of low productivity and nearly shut down. It now works on a skeleton crew, and productivity per man-hour has increased. Ford HAS closed plants because of the same issues.
Many (not all ) union bosses in the private sector have the same sentiment as public unions. Few union employees share those goals. Many of my co-workers would rather not pay dues because of the socialst mind set of their reps / local president / and national leaders. I believe that is why private unions are loosing members in droves. Too bad, too

When sears bought out the company, the quality and styles all changed. I won’t shop at a grocery store that is union, why would I pay more for my food when I can go to Costco or Trader Joes. I have had enough of these thugs, its seems that wherever you look the thugs are trying to dictate policy. Let’s have them try, most Americans are finally over all of this insanity. I am still in the trades and employ everything I learned for union workers on a daily basis. Not all of them were great, you had guys that would slow down to keep the job going longer, and some that did sub par work. I have to deal with the same crap in the nonunion sector also. Same rules, they get one chance to straighten up and if they don’t they leave. To say all union workers suck and to boycott union made goods is foolish. That’s like saying all servers are lazy because your waitress last night was slow with your dinner.

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 12:01amI dumped the AFLCIO when I filed a greivance when a young kid put a pad knife to my throat and they deemed it horseplay. My wife thought I got an $80.00 a month raise. The funny thing is the kid robbed a liquore store and they lost my dues and his. GM shut down the plant in OK City because we are a right to work state and their quality was one of the best in the nation. Nearly 7 years later about 70 UAW stewards meet at the office across from the plant. I assume the union or GM is paying them.

There is not one Communist country that is viable. There are human rights violations in everyone of them and starvation in those countries also. The 2nd amendment is the most important thing saving America at this very moment. There is no force in the world in the absence of the US military that could take America, at least in the South. The North would fold like a cheap chair along with some Western states. Obama said “I want a civilian security force as strong as the US military.” Why would he want that? We have cops, FBI, CIA, Sheriff’s departments and state police and that is not enough. He would recruit people with like minded ideology and give them supreme authority, you know, much like the Nazi gestapo or the KGB in the old Soviet Union. 97% black in transit in DC. That could be fixed with “snakes on the train, instead of snakes on the plane.”…

Capitalism has some problems like all systems, but over all, it has worked here for over 200 + years. Socialism has never worked , these radicals of our society will be met with some resistance before they can ever upset the whole current system. I will say having the worst president in American history supporting them , has given these useful idiots some false hope, but working Americans will fight them hard soon. Hardly any are informed also of UN Agenda 21, they are sneaking it in at local government levels under the guise of “sustainable development, sustainable water”, etc. They will win through ignorance of the general population. One place to start would be at your local school. In my time in public school system the Marxist students under La Raza Unida were allowed to riot, have sit ins, and walk outs. The school administration did nothing but pander to these thugs. In the years since then — I have watched as public schools took on the names of these radicals as well as public streets. Have you protested the street names? Whatever happened to naming schools after our Founding Fathers or men of valor like the Billy Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado? Or George Washington High School?
Start by demanding that your local streets get renamed for those who have supported America vs. those who embraced Mao or Che, etc.
Check out the textbooks used in your school system protest the agenda that pushes admiration for those who embraced Mao, etc. Every time the administration refers to “Free Breakfast or FREE lunch” tell them, “NO!” those are TAXPAYER funded programs…they are not FREE.
