Former Marine Detained for ‘Ominous’ Facebook Posts Speaks Out for the First Time: ‘It Made Me Scared for My Country’

The former Marine who was detained by federal and local law enforcement over a number of controversial Facebook posts is speaking out for the first time since a judge ordered he be released from a psychiatric ward in Salem, Va. last Thursday.

Brandon Raub, 26, spoke with John Whitehead, his lead attorney and president of the Rutherford Institute, and recounted his frightening ordeal, saying he is “afraid” for his country that an American citizen can be detained without due process.

Raub was put in handcuffs and hauled away from his home in Richmond, Va. by federal and local law enforcement officials on Aug. 16 for making anti-government Facebook posts referring to “revolution” and statements that questioned the official story behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He was then sentenced to up to 30 days in a psychiatric facility on Aug. 20 by a judge — no trial, no arrest warrant, no charges filed.

He was held under Virginia’s “civil commitment” law that allows police to detain an individual that is extremely mentally ill and may present an imminent threat to himself or others.

Throughout the interview with Whitehead, Raub appears to be coherent and completely aware of his surroundings. On the surface, he certainly doesn’t appear to be suffering from a mental disorder. However, Whitehead recently told TheBlaze that he is seeking to have Raub evaluated by an independent psychiatrist to prove that.

The military veteran explained why he decided to serve his country as a Marine and what led to him posting the controversial remarks that resulted in his detention.

“I got out of high school in 2004 and I worked for a year, and then I looked at what was going on around the world and saw how my brothers and sisters were volunteering to go overseas and I love my country quite a bit, so I figured that I kind of had a place in that,” Raub said. “I always knew if I joined the service, it would be the Marine Corps.”

Raub served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a combat engineer where he located improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and built field fortification systems.

“Originally, I never imagined that there would be problems to the degree we have or things going on — that are easy to find if you are told to go look for them. Very specifically, the rampant abuse of executive orders,” he explained. “It literally gives the president the ability to write his own laws.”

He went on: “What really concerned me was the length of time that we’ve had executive orders on record that will allow the federal government to seize private property, industry, even language denoting labor camps — that’s real language in real executive orders.”

Raub also addressed arguably his most controversial Facebook post, where he proclaimed, “Sharpen my axe, I’m here to sever heads.” He says it was a metaphor and lyric from a Canadian rap song.

“The truth is very powerful and it has the ability to cut, and the truth is not always nice, sometimes it can be very specific,” he said of the statement.

 

The Detainment

Raub took his attorney step-by-step through the morning he was taken away in a police car. He says he initially spoke to two FBI agents through his front screen door in his shorts. However, he added that there was law enforcement “stacked all up and down the road.”

“They didn’t say very much, I actually had to ask them why they were there,” Raub said.

The most disturbing part, he explained, is that police didn’t say anything about a search warrant or arrest warrant, they said they were just there to “talk” but ended up transporting him to a mental hospital.

Raub said the FBI, Secret Service and local police all showed up that day. They seemed concerned about some of his Facebook posts but weren’t specific.

“A secret service agent asked me to step outside and talk to him and out of my own free will, I went out into the street and spoke with them,” the former Marine said. He added there was one Secret Service agent leading the conversation. They spoke for 10-15 minutes about “some of the stuff going on in the government,” including the Bilderberg Group, a secret group that some believe control the policy of most major world governments. Officials recently confirmed that they had received a number of complaints about some of Raub’s “ominous” Facebook posts.

Raub and his attorney skipped over the fact that Raub is a 9/11 “truther” and did not mention it during the interview. Nonetheless, being a “truther” is not against the law and the First Amendment protects all speech, not just speech that is uncontroversial.

Following the conversation, the cops surrounded Raub and detained him.

“Did they say, ‘sir here are your Miranda rights?” Whitehead asked.

“No, they just started grabbing me.”

Raub said he was not physically or mentally assaulted by police, however, they refused to let him put on a shirt or shoes.

“I’m pretty tough, so I rolled with the punches. But it made me scared for my country that a man can be snatched out of his property without being read his rights, I think it should be very alarming to all Americans,” he said.

Raub also confirmed a recent claim made by Whitehead on Glenn Beck’s show on TheBlazeTV that one of the psychiatrists at the Salem psychiatric center threatened to “brainwash” him and force medication on him unless he followed orders.

After the terrifying incident, Raub is convinced that Americans are living in a society similar to the one found in George Orwell’s classic novel “1984.”

“If you read ‘1984’…in that society there was something called the ‘Ministry of Truth.’ Bill Clinton very recently went on record and said that he believed there should be a Ministry of Truth in this country to monitor the internet,” said Raub.

“It’s a government that I loved,” he added, saying he still “absolutely” wants truth to prevail within the federal government.

Raub reiterated that people should take “peaceful” and “non-violent” methods to educate themselves and disseminate information about what is going on in the United Sates.

      Hey CC – I’ll explain to you what happen to the Trade Center Towers. Big Jets piloted my Muslim extremest flew into them and they fell down – killing nearly 3000 people.

      If you think for one moment that 911 is a conspiracy, then the biggest mystery of all is that not one truther was involved with the planning of 911 or the so called truth would be out already.       We’ve got our hands full enough of facts about whats really happening to this country. Even if the government had a hand in 911, whats the diff now? Focus on the mission at hand! Getting the current occupant of the WH out of it and electing a WE the People president.

      Maybe that aint Romney, but its a far cry from the socialist we have there now. Its a stepping stone! If the government is somehow later and factually found to be implicated in a conspiracy to carry out that fateful day then we’ll only know one thing, they were right all along which will still change nothing. We’ve still along way to go at repairing the damage done to a nation by DL. It will take two terms and another Conservative administration to get past the mess we are in if that is even possible which at this point I do not believe it is.

      Anyone governing today knows the country is being propped up at all four corners with match sticks. We havn’t much longer as the debt piles up and the whole thing comes down. God help us.

      DB321, The building the other man is speaking of was NOT hit by a plane, yet it caught fire and then subsequently fell in on itself, similar to the Twin Towers. Keep in mind, building 7 was not a highrise and none of the surrounding buildings were on fire.

      Now, that said, I’m not sure what to make of the 9/11 bombings. But I do know what to think of the incidents at Ruby Ridge, Waco, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, and several other cases. In my opinion, all of these were caused and exacerbated by our federal government. Oh, and just so you know, I went to school with now grown men and women whose mothers and fathers were inside the Murrah building at the time of the blast, so you can trust (as much as you can trust a person over the web) me when I say that I do not take that accusation lightly or without consideration of the facts.

      You may know people associated with that event but it doesn’t make your accusation any less stupid. That building had be targeted by white supremacist groups before. It was a target. Targeted by a bunch of idiots (Timothy McVeigh & Terry NIchols and friends) McVeigh said they did it in protest of Waco and Ruby Ridge. If that’s your justification for “ caused and exacerbated by our federal government” then any of us can blow something up.

    I live in Chesterfield county, VA . If someone is a “danger to the public or themselves”(psychiatric), the police are allowed to pick them up on what is called a “green warrant”. chesterfield PD knew this and still proceeded to help the feds. That scares me to no end.

      In most states it’s called an EOD: emergency order of detention. 100% legal provided certain criterea are met. Making irrational threats against others, yourself or a delusion inspired threat all count. I don‘t know what the doctor said in approving the EOD but as long as the i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed it is legit.

      JZS, You are about a day late and a dollar short. Did some research on this ‘gang’ yesterday and I get the idea that the members have had some sort of conversion. I’m leaning towards Islamic, but not sure yet. Right now only four have been arrested and arraigned, but the gang contains more members, and apparently some are in the state of Washington. Where they want to poison a water supply and attempt to destroy the apple crop. Not exactly Tea Party people right? Although you probably think so. Doesn’t even sound like the OWS crowd to me. There is defiantly something else going on with this bunch.

      If you had picked up the link on Drudge yesterday their story pointed out (as did Pat & Stu on air I think) that big sis is working to put as many returning vets as possible on drugs for PTSD promising all kinds of benefits available if they’ll apply, then they find out they lose their 2nd Amendment rights as soon as they admit to any kind of psychological or psychiatric problem.

      I am not a 911 truther but am a retired US Army MSG and am scared of the current administration and its trampling on our rights. What is the child in the White House loses – he won’t be able to accept that and will try anything to stay in power including a declaration of Martial Law. That allows him to ignore normal procedures, to lock people up without charges or warrants, just because they disagree with him. I sincerely believe that he and Valerie Jarrett have p0lans in place to do exactly that.
      If this occurs it will foment a revolution, one that we don’t want but will be forced to deal with. I would hope to be part of that revolution. Remember I swore to defend the constitution against ALL enemies foreign and domestic.

    Another reason to never let them in without a warrant (unless you called them of course). Let a judge first decide if they want to allow it to happen. It may, but you have at least inconvenienced them and you have a judge on the list of people to sue. Never without a warrant though, I support the police but if they are not there because you called then they are not there as your friend. Talk to me through the door or window unless you have a warrant for arrest or search.

    The biggest concern to me was that, I believe, Mr. Raub mentioned (or his attorney mentioned) that the particular facebook posts that someone found “objectionable” were actually messages (not post) to just his brother and sister-in-law – and not found on his general facebook page (which means that some agency was monitoring these “private” conversations). Now – it’s extremely foolish to believe that you can communicate anything electronically without the NSA/CIA/DOJ/FBI/DHS, etc. snooping around and monitoring it – but could someone at The Blaze check into this to see if it is true that these were no message were private and not published on his page that everyone (or everyone he has selected as a friend) could see. I would also like to see his attorney issue a Freedom of Information Request requiring the government to disclose who was monitoring his Facebook messages.

      You’re a fool if you think this is just the Democrats responsible for this. Romney, in a debate, said he supported it. Most of the Republicans voted in favor of it. Then they voted against RP’s bill that took out the two paragraphs that removed indefinite detention from the 2012 defense bill. And the Republican house could have defunded Obama’s ability to enforce anything if they had any balls or actually wanted to keep the tyrant in check. No sir, we were bipartisanly screwed on this one.

      I’m watching the RNC (live), they‘re counting off the delegate votes and I’m a bit miffed that the sign for tallying the votes only has “Romney” and “Others” listed. I think the sign should have everyone’s name listed.

      @ JustAngry: I agree with you. This is not a partisan issue. Unfortunately, Romney probably will not even come close to settling this subject. I wish it were not so. We have too many progressives out there representing us. I didn’t know what the “Patriot Act” was back in the day- and thought, “well, maybe this is an okay idea.” Horrifically disillusioned as to the right I was surrendering. Unbelievable. I’m still voting for Romney this fall, even if he is somewhat of a Moderate. I hope he is better at putting our people back to work. i wonder if everyone on the blaze will be dissecting him the entire time he is President like we do Obama? I sure hope so. It’s like GB suggests, “Don’t trust ANYONE.” I‘ll definitely be watching Romney and hope he doesn’t disappoint me to many times over.

      Hey Monk, I didn’t realize you were there. Tell me, what are they thinking? Are they trying to lose? You look at the vote totals and wonder why they went to so much trouble to undermind the state conventions. Now, what they’re doing with the rule changes, it‘s so obvious what they’re trying to accomplish. I heard the Paul delegates just stormed out of the convention after being dissed.

      @Richmond, I wish I convince you to take a stand with many of us and hope for a miracle at a third party candidate taking it, but I understand. We all got to do what we think is best and hope for the best. Perhaps something will change between now and Nov. and folks will really see what’s going on with the parties and unite under the Constitution. I personally think they’re on the same team only pretending they have different philosophies. Anyway, the liberty movement will be here keeping an eye out on whoever takes the WH. It‘s not like we’re shy about pointing out how corrupt these pig politicians are.

      Hi Justangry,

      Yea, I’m there, it’s just down the street from me. If you remember, I asked both you and Soybom315 if I could buy either or both of you breakfast or lunch. I really wanted to meet both of you. The RNC is going rather smoothly, Police everywhere. So much so that the Black Bloc and others are too afraid to cause trouble. But, two more days to go. You’d be surprised what nice clothes and a nice tie can do to get into the RNC. Not to mention a nice haircut. I can just about go anywhere…. as the Police are watching the hoodlums.

      The basic overall theme of the Republicans is OK and it’s a shame what they did to Dr. Paul and his delegates. I didn’t see them walk out as I was pushed back by the security guards. It was a tense moment or two and the security is intense.

    This is a stunningly shocking story. I hope that everyone who comments on this story will also contact you Legislators (both State and Federal) and ask for a Congressional investigation (send one to Darrell Issa, since he’s head of the government reform and oversight committee – plus the F&F investigation).

    Without “Due Process” we are not free. There are two situations that I’m aware of where Due Process goes out the window – Civil Commitment like used above and Child Protective Services (I’ve seen dozens of horror stories the past few years of children being snatched from their parents, just on the whim of someone who ‘reported’ them. Well, since the gov is busy encouraging Snitching, you’re going to see more of this.

    There was another story yesterday of a man who was just cleaning his guns on his back deck, a nosy neighbor called 911 and he had swarms of Swat. Took him in for evaluation, recorded all of his guns and then released him. He was a Veteran as well.

    We must insist with all our Legislators that there are no situations in America where they can waive Due Process!

      Yeah, I already contacted mine about the NDAA. They didn’t bother answering me. I believe they all know most Americans don’t want it. Most don‘t even know they suspended our rights to due process because it wasn’t reported by the media. The Paul supporters have been screaming about it months in advance, but we’re “kooky” so no one listened.

      Y’all know you have no rights currently right? Well, let’s just say “limited rights”.

      The Insurrection Act of 1807 (10 U.S.C. § 331 – 10 U.S.C. § 335.) was updated in 1976 with the National Emergencies Act ( 50 U.S.C. § 1601-1651). This act allows the POTUS to declare a National State of Emergency. In this state of national emergency you do not have the right of Habeas Corpus nor do you have full 5th amendment rights.

      We have been at a declared state of emergency since 1995. Owebama has continued this and notified congress.

      Under the National Emergencies Act, Congress has the power to reverse the POTUS. Of course they do not…heck they don’t even vote on the matter. It is this state of emergency that can give way to things like NDAA.

      I must be one of your fathers then. I was taught to kill communists when I was 18, not vote for them. I did not vote for, nor will I acknowledge Comrade Chairman as the President of the United States. I will not obey his edicts or the communist agenda his supporters have forced through Congress in the dark of night. Barack Obama is a liar, a thief and a cheat, he is not my President and he should not be yours either.

      I don’t know what this kid posted on Facebook nor do I care. What I can tell you is he must be right otherwise they would not have reacted like this. If it walks like a communist, talks like a communist and acts like a communist, it IS a communist, period. This is how all totalitarian regimes act, people who oppose them just disappear in the night without a trace. Those who are prepared also disappear in the night but leave a stack of bodies where they fought for their freedom. I do not intend to die in some commie detention cell.

    oathkeepers.org It will not cost you a penny to take a look. being an oath keeper is simple, obey your oath. encourage others in law enforcement and military to reaffirm their oath they took. If the folks that detained this marine illegally remembered their oath to UPHOLD and DEFEND the US Constitution they would have stood down and refused to follow an illegal order. PERIOD, they are as bad s the ones authorizing executive orders such as NDAA, patriot act and so on. This guy is not alone by any means, there are many Good Americans who work hard, have families, contribute to society in a positive way. It is sad they ignore illegal’s flowing into our country and yet put tons of resources into tracking, following and harassing our Military men and woman or any American for that matter.     I wouldn’t be surprised if our government abducted every American and transported them into a concentration camp. I’m glad this man came forward and I salute him. I believe we are currently in WWIII, I’m sure hundreds of thousands have probably already been abducted this year… or maybe more. I believe it officially started the killings when their creepy mental leader Piven announced “It is time.” (meaning it is time again for the “racial cleansing” they did back in the 1940′s when they abducted and murdered millions of innocent people – I believe it is already here and has been going unnoticed…..) Probably taking people who have no family or friends who are have listed themselves on the Facebook. I’m glad this man is here and letting us know.

      American Government has done this sort of thing since it’s conception. I believe now with the media it probably happens less. People labeled as insane used to be housed in jails in the 1700′s because they felt that mental illness was due to sins. The government even cut out peices of peoples brains and forced experimental drugs onto people. It wasn‘t until the 1930’s that people were treated more humanely.

      freedommover – Until a few weeks ago I would have agreed that the 30′s was the upward change in mental health but then I looked up the word vivisection and had my mind blown for several hours as I learned about the evil man is capable of. I finally investigated MKULTRA which I had dismissed until then as a wacky theory word. What I spent the next days finding out is that our Government has been and IS still conducting human experimentation. The American, Canadian and world head of the American Psychiatric association killed folks and ruined the life’s of others in support of evil ends, and THEN was promoted to this position. My entire college career has been in psychology and therapy, do you think I give a crap about regulation from this industry anymore? Did you know that part of our WWII ending treaties with Japan included all the gruesome Unit 731 research they had conducted. The atrocities we know about probably pale in comparison to the ones we have not and may never uncover. I would encourage all readers to familiarize themselves with the reality of our out of control government and what they are capable of biased on the logical comparison of what they have already gotten away with. Take a half of one hour and google it my friends, nasty stuff.

      How about we follow the constitution and re-establish the republic. We lawfully arrest those that have infringed upon the constitution and the rights of people. We give them fair and open trials as outlined in the constitution. If found guilty we punish them is a just manner.
