Former New York Times Editor Says Newspaper ‘Bleeds’ a Progressive Worldview

Outgoing New York Times public editor Arthur Brisbane used his final column Saturday to essentially accuse the paper of having a liberal bias, something he said has led topics like gay marriage and the Occupy movement to be taken up “more like causes than news subjects.”
Brisbane, who was charged with critiquing the Times’ coverage during his two-year stint, said he doesn’t believe it is the result of any kind of “conspiracy,“ rather something that is ”powerfully shaped by a culture of like minds.”
“When The Times covers a national presidential campaign, I have found that the lead editors and reporters are disciplined about enforcing fairness and balance, and usually succeed in doing so. Across the paper’s many departments, though, so many share a kind of political and cultural progressivism — for lack of a better term — that this worldview virtually bleeds through the fabric of The Times,” Brisbane wrote.
He continued, “As a result, developments like the Occupy movement and gay marriage seem almost to erupt in The Times, overloved and undermanaged, more like causes than news subjects.”
New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson pushed back against Brisbane’s claims to Politico, saying the newsroom is “always conscious that the way we view an issue in New York is not necessarily the way it is viewed in the rest of the country or world.”
“I agree with another past public editor, Dan Okrent, and my predecessor as executive editor, Bill Keller, that in covering some social and cultural issues, the Times sometimes reflects its urban and cosmopolitan base,” Abramson told Politico. “But I also often quote, including in talks with Mr. Brisbane, another executive editor, Abe Rosenthal, who wanted to be remembered for keeping ‘the paper straight.‘ That’s essential.”

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 1:14pmThe NYT is just another religious paper promoting the progressive faith with it’s messiah sitting in the White House. Unfortunately, this faith is at odds with economic realities which is why the policies of Obama do not and will never work. Instead of abandoning his failed beliefs, Obama doubles down while trying to control ever more areas of the economy and of our lives. The end result is a totalitarian society where those in power build fences to keep people from fleeing….

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 12:49pmI graduated from high scholl in 1963. My journalism teacher, an old LA times reporter told us there were two honest papers in the country, the Walstreet Journal and New York times-but the Times was becoming questionable. It did not take long to see it turn, and now in 2012 it is deplorable and when an honest person writes there, it becomes a huge deal. The death of the written paper is sad, and when we get more news and opinion on the internet, it is sad. Now we have lost any objectivity in the National news on TV except for “some” Fox and they are cable. Once apon a time you got real news in this country, not any more. A real article should be, by journalistic standard, “who, what, where, when and sometimes why”. That was what was taught to journalism students, then. Now?

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 2:42pmOur small home town paper used to be owned by the NYT until recently. It is still called the Times though. Back in early ‘69 my class took a tour of the high school that we would be attending in the Fall. I still remember the head librarian giving us the tour of the school’s library and in particular the periodicals section. She introduced us all to the variety of daily newspapers they had, and at the very end she said that they even have available daily, the Gadsden Fish Wrapper. Today, in 2012, that name still fits.

I realize your a moron but I’ll waste my time explaining the difference between apples and cinder blocks anyway.
The NY Times tries to pass itself off as a source of unbiased news (which is laughable). “Journalist” are supposed to be the watchdogs for the people ,not the propaganda arm and attack dog for the democrat party. You see the NY Times are LIARS because they pretend to something they most certainly are not. Since we all know they are lying about who they are and where they are coming from ,how can anyone believe anything they print ?
The Blaze is an openly conservative website ,which post stories that we would never see in the NY Times. Did you see the part where I typed “openly conservative” that means you know exactly where “The Blaze” is coming from .

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 11:57amJust read Maureen Dowd’s column today. She is the penultimate Lefty NYT’s Obama gal. In one column she smears Romney for changing positions, mentions ” right wing lunacy,” castigates Ryan for being against abortion , and describes conservatives as ” Neo-Neamnderthals.” Any bias detected ?? The New York Times is the “Leakiest” ship in the journalism pool. The Obama Democrats give it all of their favorable , secret , top security “water.” And the NYT just loves to leak it to the public. Hope they all get prosecuted !

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 3:25pmI once read an editorial by Comrade Dowd years ago arguing FOR reparations. The gist of her “argument” was that all of us benefited from slave labor because of the infrastructure blacks were forced to build (sounds a bit like Barry’s “You didn’t build That” argument). She went on to explain that HER family made big money in the 18th century in shipping that was build on slave labor to explain just why YOU and I owe reparations.
Then it became clear to me. She’s just another “White Guilt” person weighed down by her family’s past. Since nobody in MY family EVER owned a slave, I have NO “White Guilt”.
As for the part about having to repay slaves for infrastructure, if that were true, then every illegal immigrant would have to pay reparations to those of us that were born here because they’re using the infrastructure that WE built. Of course, Progressives don’t see the linkage there either.
PS. I quit reading the rag after that.

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 11:53amI don’t know which is more rediculous, reading articles from the NYT’s that are so liberal and progressive that most of middle America, the south and the moutain west can’t even identify with what is written there!
Or, when on the morning “news” programs–Good Morning America, Today, etc., they do a segment on the latest “handbags” or “belts” or “gizmo’s,” and again, most of the working U.S. doesn’t give a flip about $500 handbags, or $200 belts, or a gizmo to make something or schedule your life–most of us do these things ourselves, without “gizmo’s“ to ”help” us!
The cities of the northeast and the west coast, along with Chicago and several others do not realized that the REAL PEOPLE of the United States of Amerioca are struggling to live their life, to help their children succeed in that life and to keep their car on the road and put food on the table, while praying for rain or sun or whatever is needed in their everyday life.
The NYT is irrelavent to most Americans, but still affects the leaders of our Country’s attitudes. Take the farm boy off the farm and put him in the “greenhouse” of Washington, DC, and it changes him!
You are history NYT’s for most of us!
