A Closer Look at the Jan. Jobless Numbers: Are They ‘Being Made Up?’

Former Reagan Budget Director on Jan. Jobs Report: These Numbers are Being Made up

People line up at a Workforce Plus job fair, Thursday, March 26, 2009, in Tallahassee, Fla. 75,000 Floridians lost their jobs in February. The state's unemployment rate rose to 9.4 %, the highest since 1976. (Photo: AP)

You may recall that major media outlets rejoiced and the markets jumped last Friday when the January jobs report was released.

“Labor Department today lowered the U.S. unemployment rate by two-tenths of a point to 8.3 percent, the lowest it’s been since February 2009,” Emily Knapp of Wall St. Cheat reported, “January data showed nonfarm payrolls to have risen a whopping 243,000, wildly exceeding even the most optimistic of economists’ projections.”

However, although the markets did indeed react positively to the good news, many analysts were skeptical of the data in the report.

“A month ago, we joked when we said that for Obama to get the unemployment rate to negative by election time, all he has to do is to crush the labor force participation rate to about 55 [percent],” editors at Zero Hedge wrote.

“Looks like the good folks at the BLS heard us: it appears that the people not in the labor force exploded by an unprecedented record 1.2 million. No, that’s not a typo: 1.2 million people dropped out of the labor force in one month!”

What does this mean?

Zero Hedge explains:

So as the labor force increased from 153.9 million to 154.4 million, the non institutional population increased by 242.3 million meaning, those not in the labor force surged from 86.7 million to 87.9 million. Which means that the civilian labor force tumbled to a fresh 30 year low of 63.7% as the BLS is seriously planning on eliminating nearly half of the available labor pool from the unemployment calculation.

Even conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh weighed in on the report, claiming that the data was “corrupt as it can be” because the Labor Force Participation Rate has been repeatedly adjusted.

Is Limbaugh out of line on this?

“After countless attempts to discredit or defend Friday’s jobs report, we can all agree on one thing: The data is complicated,” Gus Lubin of Business Insider writes. “So complicated that the BLS could make the economy look better than it was and no one would be sure.”

Former Reagan Budget Director on Jan. Jobs Report: These Numbers are Being Made up

David Stockman

That’s more or less what David Stockman, former budget director for President Ronald Reagan, wrote in an email to former hedge fund manager Bruce Krasting.

On his blog “My Take on Financial Events,” Krasting wrote, “Is the current [Labor Force Participation Rate] a temporary phenomenon, or is this the ‘New Normal?’”

Krasting believes that if the current Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) is the “new normal,” it could have severe – even dangerous – effects on the economy.

Why?

“Virtually all of the economic models used by CBO, OMB, SSA and private economists are assuming that the long-term LFPR will be in the mid-to upper 60s. The consensus is 2-3 [percent] higher than where it is today,” Krasting writes.

“If you plug in a rate of 63 [percent] versus 67 [precent] over the next ten-years, it makes a huge difference on the size of the deficit and the public debt. It would cause the deficits at Social Security and Medicare to explode. The percentage of GDP attributable to the government would inevitably rise. The economy, and society in general, would be socialized [emphasis added],” Krasting writes.

In response to Krastings’ criticism of the jobs report, Stockman writes: “…if you spend a little time with these numbers you will know that they are being made up.”

Here’s the email (via Wall Street Examiner):

…I’m wondering if this goes much deeper. I don’t particularly believe in tin foil hats, but all of these mainstream economists treat the BLS and BEA data like it’s holy writ—when it’s evident that the reports are so massaged, estimated, deemed, revised, re-bench marked and seasonally adjusted that any month-to-month change has a decent chance of being noise. What deep secret might they be hiding?

So on the labor force participation rate they say, “No it didn’t go down in January because the 2012 numbers are re-bench marked for the 2010 census,” but for some reason the BLS didn’t bother to update the 2011 civilian population numbers, including December. Thus, the BLS published apples-to-oranges numbers on this particular variable and the footnote says the December participation rate would have been the same as January, if they had revised it!

Yet on another variable— the establishment survey jobs count—they were also busy re-benchmarking–but here they did update the originally reported numbers for every month of 2011. Even then, it is hard to say what got updated because the originally reported numbers each month are then revised during the next two reporting months—with any excess or shortfall reallocated to earlier months outside the three month window, which are not published on a revised basis, even though they have been revised! This reflects a wacko thing called the concurrent seasonal adjustment method.

… your point is that the longer-term trend of the labor force participation rate is really bad, and this truth is absolutely validated by the January report. Except it would have been equally bad in December had it been reported with the new census data…

But the mainstream narrative never gets to the trend. In this case, the plain fact is that we are warehousing a larger and larger population of adults who are one way or another living off transfer payments, relatives, sub-prime credit, and the black market. My suspicion is that this negative trend and many others like it get buried by the monthly change chatter from mainstream economists and on bubble vision, and that these monthly deltas are so heavily manipulated  as to be almost a made-up reality. Call it the economists’ Truman Show.

In short, if you spend a little time with these numbers you will know that they are being made up. Funny thing that I remember during the depths of the 1982 recession Reagan read in Human Events one night that the seasonally adjusted numbers were being manipulated and one should look at the unadjusted numbers, instead. The next morning during an economic update briefing Reagan said, he wanted to talk about the “unadjusted” unemployment rate. Marty Feldstein turned white as a ghost, and then talked him out of it. Hmmm!

What a lying sack of crap ! How do you tell if Little Barry is lying ? Everytime he opens his mouth !
This little worm of a man must think he is a god or something, he wants to dictate to everyone while him and the First grifter live high off the work and wealth of working folks. I honestly can say I have always respected the office of the President, but at this point in time I cannot say that. All it has become is a tool to shakedown and loot other peoples wealth. The thuggie we have in that office deserves derision and scorn, he is a demented individual surrounded by evil demented people.

The US has had 23 straight months of jobs growth after the freefall losses during 2008. Surely those numbers are invented. All 23 of them. And the stock market also reached it’s highest point since 2008. But somebody made that up too I’m sure.

JZS – It is entirely possible (and very, very likely), that the job numbers from the last 23 months (and beyond – though before Obama I knew very, very few unemployed people) have in fact been manipulated and made up. Considering that even the reported unemployment number is, in essence, a complete fabrication with no realistic basis, the possibility is further supported. And finally, if the stock prices and values are based off false, misleading, and dishonest economic numbers, wouldn’t that mean: a) big winners in the stocks universe could be the ones behind the manipulating, and/or b) the entire economy right now is a house built with cards with an approaching breeze called exposure of truth?

Remember the line from Sneakers: it’s all about who controls the information!

      @JZS

The unemployment numbers have never been accurate. As for Obama’s performance, all anyone should need to see is the national debt when he took office and the national debt now. I berated Bush for increasing the national debt so much AS DID THEN SENATOR OBAMA. Here is what Obama had to say about it:

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership
means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.” – Senator Obama 2006

I read those words then and thought to myself that they summarized well one of my biggest disappointments with Bush’s presidency. They were spot on. The fact that during Obama’s first term the problem has been much worse truly sickens me.

National debt is a metric they haven’t yet figured out how to fudge beyond usefulness. It’s an objective measure of financial stewardship. Bush failed in this regard. Obama’s performance has been much worse.

By his own words we deserve better.

      Bite on this then, CARBONYES,
The mess Bush created was in free fall when Obama took office. Do you really believe that something THAT catastrophic with the momentum it had could be stopped over night? Of course not. The damage Bush created is STILL being felt because of the depth and severity of his mistakes. By the way, 2 unnecessary and unbelievably expensive wars to fight didn’t help matters either. But the slow progress of the Obama admin. is mainly due to the Republican strategy of “non-cooperation at all costs”. It was not a secret that the Reps wanted Obama to fail and they would stop at nothing to see to it that he would. No matter the cost to country.
You guys can bitch and moan all you want, point your fingers and wail, “It‘s Obama’s Fault”! But everybody knows who started this mess and everybody knows who’s keeping us stuck there.

To help clear the air, Obama definitely adheres to the Marxist philosophy of spreading the wealth and/or take from the haves to give to the have nots, but more seriously, Obama is a Muslim, who believes wholeheartedly in the written Koran and the tenets espoused therein. In case you did not put two and two together, Obama is a radical Muslim. He even has fooled the Elitists who hover around him.

Least you may have forgotten, Muslims lie, cheat, steal, break promises, covenants, their word, whatever is necessary to accomplish their agenda, goals and policies. THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS. Anything that Obama does in any sphere that he operates is kosher for him to be successful in his Jihad to destroy the Republic of the United States of America. make no doubt about it. He also plans to name himself as the head of the Caliphate here in this country. Side note: Barack Obama, Sr. absolutely is not Obama’s father. There is not even the slightest of similarities of their persons in any way. Let’s put it another way. Obama is not an Obama. Is that clear enough?

There are so many things that are scattered and tattered in the lost history of Barack Hussein Obama, that it it extremely difficult to put the pieces together, particularly when all of his past history is in effect blotted out by the freezing of all his records from birth and refusal to release even one jot or tittle. His responsibilities aside, why do you think his hair is turning gray? He fears truth!

23 moinths of job growth? 3.5 millions NEW JOBS! Best I can remember of all the blather. The workforce when this whole charade started, there were something like 160,000,000 in the work force. Umployment was at, what 7.6%. Apparently there are something like 125,000 NEW employable people in this country every month. I-ll be charitable and use the numer of 380,000 as the median of NEW unemployment claims. So extrapolating we should have an additional 8 million people employed , but the work force is nowis 154,300,000 but it should be 163, 850,000.
Now taking pi, and coincidental angle of the sun on Feb. 8, I ask you only to offer a rational argument that thet unemployment rate is effectively 8.3% – or even more simly- there has been a growth in PRIVATE sector employment as a function of employable residents for 23 months. In the spirit of fairness please define as to relevant function of population baseline workforce, total workforce, corporate non- farm workforce, seasonally adjusted as to proportionate relative significane as to thbe price of tea in China’s spot markeof course in cooresponding real time,

Obama’s pathway to the Presidency was assisted by dark and sinister forces. The books allegedly written by him were profoundly not written by him and contain falsehood after falsehood to prepare a history for him that differs substantially from reality or truth, for if reality and truth were known about Obama, he would not have made it to the Illinois Senate, let alone to the Presidency of the United States. As was said in my above post, Obama fears that his charade, which he is deeply committed to, will be exposed before he can carry out his dastardly acts and measures which will not only turn this country completely on its head, but will release death and destruction not only in America but throughout the world. This is not hypothesis, conjecture or opinion. We are dealing with an emissary straight from the pits of Hell, and obviously not to be taken lightly in any respect.

He must be countered with every earthly and heavenly force and contended with as your very life and that of your loved ones depended on his complete defeat, for it surely does. JESUSH.CHRIST, not beating the drum for George W. Bush. He did more than his share of pointing and continuing this country on the road to becoming a third world nation. Dear George reminds me a bit of Nero, sitting there fiddling while Rome burned. President Bush knew damn well what was happening with the housing market mushrooming and billowing out of control thanks to Barney Fwanks, Chris Dodd, Fanny May and Freddie Mac, and all the bundlers at Goldman Sachs, Citi Group, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers and the list goes on. Pres. Bush took a few of them aside a couple times and got no cooperation. Did he ever hear of fireside chats? As serious as matters were, the very least he could have done was to take the matters to the American people. Don’t know if Bush was ignorant, intimidated or outright complicit, or a combination thereof, but he dropped the ball in this area as well as in immigration reform, which I believe he purposefully avoided.

The huge difference between Bush and Obama, is that Obama increased both the incline and the decline of the economy upon the road to complete destruction. Bush owes this country a major apology for he sat by while the bubbles were expanding and the mischief and crime was being conducted. Domestically Bush was a failure. The economy was unraveling behind the scenes, and he did nothing. Obama relished the opportunity of enacting and promoting his socialistic, progressive whacked policies-a disaster.

The Federal Reserve is without question the Prime Mover behind the economic cycle and it’s past time that all Conservatives Americans become aware of this since after all Bill Clintion said it is about the economy stupid…

I understand that the Republican party has a vested interest in keeping the economy as bad as possible until the 2012 elections. Putting party above they good of the country, they have blocked or tried to block every job initiative Obama has proposed. Instead they have proposed to double down on the same policies that did nothing to improve job growth, or the economy during the Bush administration: cut taxes for the rich. Bush tried that twice, the deficit grew and the economy tanked.

During the last months of the “cut taxes for the rich” policy the US was losing 700,000 a month. A month. Within three months of Obama’s (and Bush’s) stimulus effort, the economy started to come out of the steep dive:

      http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/bikini-graph-January-2012.jpg

Now we‘ve had 23 straight months of job growth and the stock market is higher than it’s been since 2008.

Sure, the Republicans want Obama to fail. That‘s why they’ve blocked his economic initiatives, and have instead proposed tripling down on Bush’s catastrophic policies. Of course they’re also supporting, not their constituents, but their rich political donors. Why else cut taxes for the billionaires again, when the US has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that doesn’t help the economy?

You want a number that means something and isn’t massaged beyond recognition?

One that the government puts out; but hasn’t been altered by other groups?

Well why didn’t you say so?

Try the Employment-Population Ratio… the percentage of Americans over the age of 16 with a job… that’s all it is, no “seasonal adjustments” no “workforce adjustments”… just a number.

      http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS12300000

Current number as of January? 58.5%… up from the 2011 summer’s 58.2% which was a 25+ year low. Change from last month? 0.0. Our “massive unemployment drop” and “tons of new jobs” and “amazing growth”? Yeah, it resulted in 0.0% more Americans over the age of 16 being employed.

Want to know why the economy doesn‘t feel like it’s getting better? Because it’s not. There aren’t more people with jobs, there are more people without jobs… regardless how you spin this, a 25+ year low isn’t a good thing.

Then I was thinking of the thea‘tricks’ they used in 08..Obama girl.. will there be a new one? or will it be Obama boy? How about those fainting people down front that prompted the hero on the stage to stop everything and get water for the fainting person? fainting from his mere presence.
    OMG
Thinking about that now makes me laugh. and then it scares me that this person is so deceitful that he would have actors fainting for effect. yikes.
Bottom line.. I believe everything is a lie, staged etc.. They have the power to skew numbers etc. and they do it.. He has the b***s to get up and lie to the American people because he believes people are stupid enough to believe him. So he will do everything he can to stay where he is.. and I mean anything. because he will just deny he was behind any of it like he has done for 3 years. No, I didn’t know. no I don’t keep track of everything.. blah blahblah.. the truth is just the opposite. I don’t know if there is a term for this? pathological liar.. a narcissist trait

Do you really think the unemployed don’t know those numbers are garbage? The people they know are not getting jobs, in fact for many, more jobs are getting lost. This was coming without a doubt, he had to manipulate the numbers or the lemmings wouldn’t vote for him. Got news for him though, the folks in the black community are where they were or worse, and the only way he can keep them is to beg for “four more years”, to “finish” his work of getting them jobs. The only thing he will finish is our country if we don’t get him out. I hope people wise up and realize he is ruining this country, prime example is the pipeline. It makes me really ill to think of what is happening while we are fighting over our candidates, I hope we get it together and get him the heck out.

Of course, the media is going to do all they can to support the Marxist-in-Chief…even though much of the policies being pushed are going to totally eliminate the middle class and destroy our country. It’s the excessive spending spree–which regardless of the 2010 elections, has not stopped. It hasn’t even slowed. It’s just one more way to promote his agenda… by destroying the economy and then being able to take over and “do what he believes is best” …for us! Fasten your seatbelts folks, pretty soon you will be scanned every where you go, have no civil rights, be forbidden to criticize the Prez, and be threatened if you don’t go along with green. Of Course the numbers are made up. The way employers report new hires and report on quarterly taxes for unemployment taxes (which would be the only way actual numbers could be compiled). It is “impossible to give any numbers” that would be in any way close to an accurate number at the first of February to the month of January! The government would have to get all the information from all the states with in a twinkling of an eye. and if the government was that damn good we wouldn’t be where we are today.

So anyone who could believe that what spews out of the mouth of the Media or the President about any program working or not working a few weeks later,is nothing but laughable! Only through the test of time ( which should be months or years) with close reporting accounting can anything, anywhere, any time every be given any accuracy of results. All we get the the odor of BS coming out of the government and media!

For the suckers that believe, it will be rewarding to be able to say, “We told you so”!

Finally, someone else on this site remembers how Stalin operated. He killed more people than demon Hitler and Stalin killed his own people. Winston Churchill was the only leader during WWII who never bought his act. FDR fell for it hook, line, and sinker. The USA and UK had to work with Stalin in order to get Hitler. The lesser of two evils. And then the Cold War began. Surprise. Surprise. No one understands history, so I fear it will repeat itself.

They do the same to me. They been taught history from the loser’s viewpoint for their entire lives. “The underbelly of history” is what one of my social justice leaning professors once called it. They’re obsessed with it in universities. I was always interested in both viewpoints, but it got to a point where I could feel the seething anger under their teaching lectures toward our country. Only a handful of students would try and defend the red, white, and blue out of fear of receiving lesser grades or not wanting to make an enemy out of a professor. They just *issed me off and so I gave up reading “modern revisionist history” a long time ago and read from historical accounts of that period and soon after. You mentioned what happened in Russia. I had one old school professor who focused on this intently. She taught on how Hitler got all the attention and it was due, but no one defended the Russians who did help us in WWII from Stalin. He was a brutal dictator and murderer who killed million of innocent, hungry, tired Russians. So few of us really take the long view of history.Communism, socialism, marxism, and totalitarianism in general, all lead to this at one point or another. That seems to be the road that liberals want to take us. Lord be with us.

It’s one thing to lose jobs in your administration, that’s common and can happen to any President and numbers are lies when they do not match reality. When things were great, no one but politicians paid attention because people were providing for their families, but when things have turned out as they have to such a terrible economic degree, everyone is watching. I didn’t vote for Obama, but I thought he might try and look like he knew what he was doing. I thought he would cut taxes to at least make it look like he was trying to apply some sound economic reason to helping the economy. I thought maybe he would ease off business regulations temporarily at least to see if things improved and large and small businesses hired again. All he did was funnel money to his green czars and more of my money is gone. He may have been handed a broke down truck, but common sense would dictate that he would have at least tried to clean the sparkplugs and change the gas before he took a sledgehammer to it. If the economy wasn’t running well before, Obama has taken a sledgehammer to it and has crushed whatever opportunity was left for the ordinary American. This is Obama’s economy.

You‘re right the CEO’s and banksters did their crimes and damaged that old chevy truck, our economy, but they didn’t destroy it. But, Obama should have punished them legally. Instead he was probably more angry he didn’t get in on the game WITH THEM sooner. So he took over Government Motors, installed Obamacare (without writing it or reading it) before passing the bill, gave billions to the Green Energy scam, refused to cut taxes early on in this now Depression economy, and now he’s dictating like a good King to the Roman Catholic Church about how they need to have healthcare that pays for abortions and birth control. Not to mention, the F&F plan that should be his WATERGATE.
Sure, a truck got driven off the cliff, but it was Obama who didn’t want to fix it, he put a brick on the gas, threw it in drive and said to hell with it. And yet he recently said, ” I DESERVE ANOTHER TERM.” Wow. some people are just downright AFFLICTED with Liberal psychosis to not see this man’s actions for what they are. The unemployment numbers have been fudged for decades. This is not an Obama specific thing.

Any number that would reflect negatively on our economy is fudged to make it seem not so bad.

Our economy is based around consumption, and consumption is based around confidence on the ability to be able to keep consuming.

Once that confidence is crippled, consumption lowers, when consumption lowers, our economy gets weaker, when our economy gets weaker, our confidence gets worse, and so and and so on.
