Former Vice President Al Gore Seeks to ‘Overhaul’ ‘Irresponsible’ Capitalism

  • Modern capitalism mostly concerned with short-term gain
  • Seeks to end quarterly earnings guidance
  • Eyes “loyalty-driven shares to counter short-termism”

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore says that he wants to end the practice of quarterly earnings guidance and “explore issuing loyalty-driven securities,” according to Reuters.

Why?

Because he believes that there needs to be an “overhaul of capitalism,” which he says, in its current form, has turned the world’s leading economies into “hotbeds” of irresponsible behavior.Former Vice President Al Gore Seeks to Overhaul Irresponsible Capitalism

Alongside David Blood, a senior partner of the “green” fund firm Generation Investment Management, Mr. Gore introduced a blueprint for “sustainable capitalism.”

Gore says that it would behoove the financial industry to adopt his blueprint in order to support lasting economic growth.

“While we believe that capitalism is fundamentally superior to any other system for organizing economic activity, it is also clear that some of the ways in which it is now practiced do not incorporate sufficient regard for its impact on people, society and the planet [emphasis added],” Gore said.

Gore’s blueprint suggests changes in corporate compensation practices, putting more emphasis on bonuses linked to multi-year performance as opposed to individual fiscal years, the Reuters report states. He said pension funds play a vital role in incentivizing managers to make long-term investment decisions, which would then translate into a healthier society and planet.

“(They) have a fiduciary obligation to maximize the long-term performance of their assets to the maturation of their long term liabilities,” Gore said. “If pension funds turn to managers of their assets and compensate them with a structure that incentivizes them to maximize performance on an annual basis, they should not be surprised if that is what their managers end up doing.”

Echoing Mr. Gore’s remarks, David Blood said capitalism has been “blighted with short-termism and an obsession with instant investment results,” which, he claims, has contributed to market volatility, increased “income inequality,” and distracted people from saving the planet.

Former Vice President Al Gore Seeks to Overhaul Irresponsible CapitalismBlood said that the campaign for “sustainable investment” has suffered because businesses worry about the high costs involved with environmental changes and that business don’t grasp “how value-destructive some elements of modern capitalism had become.”

“…in America, as soon as you say the word ‘sustainability’ people think of socially-responsible investing, tree-hugging and we don’t believe that at all. We think sustainability is just best practice in business,” he said.

Blood, a former CEO of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, introduced a five-step plan that he believes will resurrect the discussion on how to “clean up capitalism and put companies, investors and stakeholders on the path towards long-term, sustainable profit,” Reuters reports.

Of the five steps he introduced, one of them calls for an end to quarterly earnings guidance from companies, which he claims incentivizes executives and investors to base everything on short-term rewards as opposed to long-term objectives.

“This is a direct appeal, dare I say, attack on short-termism in business,” Blood dared to say.

“Today the average mutual fund in the U.S. turns over its entire portfolio every 7 months; 20 years ago it was every 7 years. Something has fundamentally changed and the problem with that is it means we’re not making good investing decisions… and not delivering proper and efficient wealth creation.”

After being rewarded with numerous accolades and a Nobel Peace prize for investigating in “environmental awareness,” Gore’s message seems to have faded into the background. Some believe this is due to the fact that most Americans are more concerned the U.S. economy than they are with the environmental impact of bovine flatulence.

Consequently, some critics believe that this latest appeal from Gore and Blood is simply an attempt to revive the environmental message via the the global economy discussion.

“We went down this path because we fundamentally believe this is relevant to business. This has always been about value creation and this whole conversation about sustainable capitalism is not a new movement,” Blood said.

“While governments and civil society will need to be part of the solution to these challenges, ultimately it will be companies and investors that will mobilize the capital needed to overcome them.”

First, I‘ll point out I don’t trust anything coming out of ManBearPig’s mouth.

Having said that, our CORPORATIONS do have serious issues.
At a time when we had nothing more than a company’s reputation and past stock prices to use to choose which stock to buy, we bought based on those things only, which meant we relied on the long-term profitability of a corporation.
However, we now have instantaneous mass communication via the Internet, and we have computerized forecasting models that give us much more accurate valuations of a company. This only leaves things like rumor, and insider information to use to enhance your margin.
Combine this with instant trading, and there isn’t much room for anything else.
Stocks are electronically bought and sold today, often multiple times in a single day.
The worst part is, CORPORATIONS have a fatal design flaw.
The owners of corporations are SHIELDED from risk. They have the potential to PROFIT well beyond their investment. But, they can never lose more than their investment.
Now, if you or I start a lemonade stand, and it turns out there was pesticide in our lemonade, WE can be sued for everything we own. This is a great motivator for us to always deliver a great product. We also have 50,000 other competitors, so that also drives us to provide great service and products.
Contrast that to a global corporation like GE. When you call them because your new fridge doesn’t work, what is their motive?

      Report Post » TomFerrari

      Posted on February 17, 2012 at 5:59am

Their motive is stock price. Executive compensation is based heavily on stock price. NOT on growth, not so much on profits, but on stock price.
I could go on about globalism, too. When a corporation has saturated the world market, they have. I room left to grow. At that point, how do they raise stock price?
Cheaper (crappier, foreign-built) products? Maybe, but they’ve already done that.
      Less service? Same there.
Ahhh, increase market share? Maybe, but somebody else’s corporation will have to suffer so this does not grow the pie.
Well, you could FORCE people to pay for your products and services.
But how???? By getting GOVERNMENT to take money from the people and give it to you.

Don’t forget, he’s building his algae farms along the Gulf coast, since the only thing that can survive in the ‘dead zone’ that will be the Gulf is algae. They are STILL spraying Corexit down in the gulf, nearly TWO YEARS after the disaster. Still!
      From Wiki:
“Environmental groups attempted to obtain information regarding the composition and safety of ingredients in Corexit through the Freedom of Information Act but were denied by the EPA. After Earthjustice sued on behalf of the Gulf Restoration Network and the Florida Wildlife Federation, the EPA released a list of all 57 chemicals in the 14 dispersents on the EPA’s National Contingency Plan Product Schedule. In August 2011, Earthjustice and Toxipedia released an analysis of the 57 chemicals, stating that “5 chemicals are associated with cancer; 33 are associated with skin irritation from rashes to burns; 33 are linked to eye irritation; 11 are or are suspected of being potential respiratory toxins or irritants; 10 are suspected kidney toxins; 8 are suspected or known to be toxic to aquatic organisms; and 5 are suspected to have a moderate acute toxicity to fish.”

Repeat after me: “Politicians are masters at rocking the boat and then convincing everyone that only they can calm the waves.”

Any rational person presented with a problem would find the root cause of that problem and solve it. The root cause of this housing bubble is clear. The government forced banks to make a lot of risky loans (Community Reinvestment Act and it’s predecessors) and, on top of that, loan officers, due to deregulation, were moved from salary based pay to commission based pay which encouraged a lot of bad behavior (giving ARM loans when interest rates are low?!?!?!?!). So, of course, as soon as the economy hit a bump in the road thousands upon thousands of people had to default.

YOU DON’T NEED TO OVERHAUL CAPITALISM TO FIX THIS!!!!! Repeal CRI and move loan officers back to salary based pay.

But, of course, Al Gore is a politician and doesn’t want to let a trajedy go to waste. He wants to use this (and every) opportunity to do what democrats always want to do: raise taxes, grow government and decrease individual liberties. They don’t believe in capitalism or freedom.

Screw banning quarterly guidance. How about doing away with “analyst expectations”. I don‘t care what the company says they’re going to do or make, that’s up to me to do my own due diligence and figure it out. Besides, I follow technical analysis and the charts of true, honest and unfettered markets (which we don’t have now thanks to the government Mr. Gore supports), never lie. It absolutely sends me sideways during earnings season when a stock that’s down 30% year over year “beats the street” by a penny and rises 10% on that “great” news. What a bunch of whooy. Let’s make them only report what the company did, earnings-wise, month over month, quarter over quarter and year over year. “Up 5, down 7, down 20″. There’s an earnings report that tells the tale.

Capitalism has suffers from government intrusion,. The greed comes from immorality,

The answers are: remove government intrusion, return to and live your faith, and educate people to buy from and invest in companies that are producing products that agree with your standards.

You can’t force a company to be environmentally friendly through government regulations. You can however, stop buying from them. They will conform, because every business wants to stay in business.

The problem with Al Gore and the rest of the Progressives is there is no limit to their greed. They won’t be happy until they rule with an iron fist over a poverty stricken people..these people hate the middle class and are waging a war of economic destruction against us.Al Gore’s Global warming Scam and the entire GREEN Movement;with its controls and regulations is a weapon against our economy..
