Middleweight Boxer and World Champ hopeful Yuri Foreman came to Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn in 1999 looking to fulfill his vision of the American Dream. After achieving the pinnacle of athletic success in winning the WBA Super Welterweight title in 2009, Foreman is now training to achieve a higher level of connection with his faith. CNN on the former world champion boxer now studying to become a rabbi:
Born in Belarus, Foreman told CNN that living within Brooklyn’s thriving Jewish communities helped him reconnect with his roots. While not saying the specific branch of Judaism that he will serve as a rabbi in, Foreman knows the group he would like to work with.
“Right now, my goal is to work with young adults and with kids who perhaps need a little push, need a little motivation that I can offer them through boxing or personal experience. That would be my thing now.”
Despite speculation from some boxing analysts, Foreman says his career in the ring is not yet over.
“If and when he fights again, as with every fight, he’ll first send up a special prayer.
‘Protect me, protect the person I’m fighting, but help me to win.’”
Foreman has been studying to be a rabbi for over three years, and CNN reports that he is about one year away from completing his studies.

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 10:05pmWho said beatting up people and being a man of God is bad. One is a sport with lots of training. The other is a calling that your people need help to find thier way in the world. This also requires training and a love of man. God bless you young man and wish you well.

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 8:57pmCompare this young man with the punks we saw marching in New York on Saturday. Refreshing to see such dedication, to the sport of boxing and his aspirations to lead young people in the right direction by becoming a Rabbi. God speed on his journey.
