Foul? N.H. Republican Proposes Fragrance Ban for State Workers

A New Hampshire Republican is tired of smelly state workers. Not the ones that smell bad, bur rather the ones that wear fragrances that others might be sensitive to.

“There’s one in five persons who are sensitive to the chemicals that are in fragrances,” Rep. Michele Peckham, R-North Hampton, told WMUR-TV.

Her proposed legislation would prevent state workers from wearing fragrances at work. He calls it a health matter that must be addressed.

Rep. Seth Cohn, R-Canterbury, disagrees with his colleague. “I think everyone knows when someone is wearing too much perfume, and we don’t have to tell anybody it. The nose knows.”

So does Rep. Pete Silva, R-Nashua.

“I know there are some people who are against having people wearing perfume, but some should wear more of it and we’d all be a lot better off,” he said.

This isn’t the first time a fragrance ban has come up. Last year, Framingham State University mulled a similar ban on perfume and cologne (and fragrances in general) on campus, and Nevada consider something similar for air fresheners and candles.

Speaker of the House Bill O’Brien has vowed to consider the measure “and see if we ought to legislate” the issue.

Yes, that is why I detest Republicans nearly as much as Demo-socialists. Actually, they might be worse because they trick un-informed conservatives to vote for them. This is why are country is screwed. It does not matter who you vote for in this 2 party system. Either way… You are voting for a Socialist. Some are just a little worse than others.

Yep, and Santorum is one of them.

“One of the criticisms I make is to what I refer to as more of a libertarianish right. You know, the left has gone so far left and the right in some respects has gone so far right that they touch each other. They come around in the circle. This whole idea of personal autonomy, well I don’t think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. You know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone. That there is no such society that I am aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture.”

Agree. However, there are more of “us-the population” than the politicians. Someone(who became a USA citizen after leaving a dictator-run country) says she knows what Democrats/Liberals stand for and “see them coming” but she “doesn’t see the Republicans coming”. These past 100 yrs are “the 95% fault of the “us-the population”. The politicians just do the bidding of the masses AND THEY LOVE THE POWER! If the Constitution is not followed, America is choosing 2 ways to die a slow-death: arsenic or cancer!

Let me bring up something most of you may not know about. It’s called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Talk to some one who has it. Their reaction to some perfumes is akin to having a stroke, complete with brain activity impairment, slackness of facial muscles, the whole works. I’ve witnessed it, and it ain’t fun, for the individual and for those who care for him/her. Now consider what that individual has to do in order to function normally is everyday activities – avoiding crowds, meetings, stores, etc. – basically becoming a hermit in your own home. Knew of one couple where the wife was so afflicted. When the husband came home from work, he had to change clothes and take a shower to remove the perfumes he would pick up at the office, otherwise she was affected.
Should this be something that should be regulated by governmentally mandate? Personally, I’d be reluctant to says so, but then again, ask what the individual mentioned above would have to feel about it.

Perhaps, a better solution would simply require perfume manufactures to provide full disclosure of what goes into their perfumes, to allow for more informed choices, much as we do for foods. Then you’d see how some feel about wearing something that has whale-vomit as a prime ingredient. I’ts added to make the fragrance last longer

but there again, its almost like the batman movie….
expose the folks to a little of this & a lil of that….
nuke it with the cell phone radiation, and viola!

I’m not trying to be callous, but there IS an absurdity in what we have created and what we do to ourselves…

I’ve sat on a flight next to one of those that goes the “axe vs. B.O.” route…

Freedomluver, Your Dairy Queen example is a bad example. Those with a peanut allergy already knows to avoid Dairy Queen. They know there is peanuts. So you are comparing apples to oranges.

A person who has a chance encounter with someone has a reaction at that point in time and does not have that luxury to know ahead of time. I can be walking past 10-30 feet away from someone smoking a cigarette in the open with the wind blowing and if the smoke drifts to my nose, I am suddenly affected. Perfume, disinfectant spray, office desk cleaner can send me into a frenzy where I lose my breath and I have to start breathing out of my mouth and leave the area until it dissipates.

I know people with Chemical sensitivities and they do react badly with some of the fragrances. Some stop breathing! Then look at the chemicals in some of these fragrances. You wouldn’t let your child open a can of Xylene and start breathing it, but it‘s okay when it’s in a perfume. Hey it smells good and when you put it on you get a little high yourself…
Wake up people, you really don’t need all the gag till you drop perfumes. Those who use perfumes and male fragrance products should try bathing instead. You might find that others will find a clean you more attractive.
Maybe if Obama required everyone to wear some, then it would be banned by Congress.
