Four Pinocchios: Washington Post Savages Team Obama’s Latest Anti-Romney ad

Because the previous attacks on former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s business record have been, you know, so successful, team Obama has decided to combine all of their anti-Romney/business talking points into one 30-second ad:

The only problem with this commercial is that it’s pretty much false. Even the Washington Post (the Washington Post!) gave it a big, fat “F” for being misleading and dishonest.

The WaPo’s Glenn Kessler points out the inaccuracies:

In a previous life, The Fact Checker covered renowned corporate raiders such as Carl Icahn and his ilk. We also have closely studied Bain Capital, and can find no examples that come close to this situation; its deals were done in close association with management. Indeed, Bain generally held onto its investments for four or five years, in contrast to the quick bust-em-ups of real corporate raiders. So calling Romney a “corporate raider” is a real stretch.

Regarding the outsourcing claims…The Obama campaign rests its case on three examples of Bain-controlled companies sending jobs overseas. But only one of the examples — involving Holson Burns Group — took place when Romney was actively managing Bain Capital.

Regarding the other claims, concerning Canadian electronics maker SMTC Manufacturing and customer service firm Modus Media, the Obama campaign tries to take advantage of a gray area in which Romney had stepped down from Bain — to manage the Salt Lake City Olympics — but had not sold his shares in the firm.

The Modus Media case is also not an example of shipping jobs overseas. The company closed one plant in California and transferred the jobs to North Carolina, Washington and Utah. At the same time, it opened an unrelated plant in Mexico.

These are just a few of the problems with the ad. Amazingly enough, there are more.

And here’s something that, depending on your political persuasion, is either hilarious or depressing: when members of Team Obama heard that the WaPo might give their commercial a miserable rating, they actually contacted Kessler to try to convince him of their arguments.

Simply repeating the same debunked claims won’t make them any more correct,” Kessler writes.

And to that, Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey had this to say:

No, but it keeps making Obama’s hostility and ignorance towards Wall Street and investors more and more plain. After watching this ad, any undecideds [sic] in the financial industry had to be thinking that Obama might be coming after Romney today, but tomorrow, it might be them.

Exit question: based on how Romney has run his campaign thus far, how long do you think it’ll take for one of his PACs to punch back? We’re putting bets on less than 24 hours.

    When the American mainstream/Democrat Party media lie, when our “Boy” President ignores the Constitution and the rule of law I ask you…why should we be so restrained? We still have a window of oppertunity to clean out the Socialist and their failed Liberal ideas. However, if we cannot then all bets are off and it will be “every man for himself”. The evil personified as Obama must be destroyed-somehow.

    Why do democrats lie and think they can get away with it? The answer is that the dem libs have held a monopoly to what news the American people should be informed of. That has been going on for 50 years.

    Now we have the internet and more honest reporting of the news by the internet providers. Will the msm ever learn that being honest in reporting will serve the nations health better than reporting fiction?

      Unfortunately there are dyed in the wool democrats who believe anything and worse yet there are a huge flock of American Sheep who are too lazy to check out the truth of advertising. The democrat party relies on both groups to hold on to power, which is the only real reason that ‘ the end justifies the means’.
      Another way to say this is that the democrats know what is good for the fly over folks and therefore they can use all means to lie to achieve this lofty goal.

    The ad is such a ball faced lie.. Bain Capital helps businesses get a start.. where those businesses take their business is not his business! As for the Washington Post.. its about time you woke up and smelled the coffee! And really when it comes right down to it… Obama has created more jobs outside of America than in.. those he created in are government jobs.. not to mention the Chinese he brought here to build bridges.. Now theres an ad Romney can sink his teeth into!

    How dare someone question our glorious dictator-in-chief? Don’t they know that EVERYTHING the Fuhrer does is in the name of truth, goodness, and the socialist way (did I write socialist? I meant American… Such an easy mistake to make…)

    I suppose its possible that the WAPO is trying to distance itself from the Reich’s propaganda campaign before they get dragged into it…

    Maybe they realized that when they write nothing but lies, people stop reading their rag….

    NoBama has no idea what to do to improve the economy, get people back to work, feed all his useless idiots, balance the budget, improve world issues, etc., do all he has to fall back on is ATTACK others. This is the tactic of a failed administrator. NoBama is out of ideas. Last time he through out there AHitler’s favorite word “CHANGE”, but that’s all used up. “Hope” went out the window a long time ago.

      The first time he ran on “Hope and Change” and conveniently forgot to tell anyone what, specifically, he meant by change.

      This time he’s running on “Fair” but, conveniently, he keeps forgetting to tell anyone what he would actually consider as fair.

      It’s typical campaign tactics. Pick a vague message and most people will assume you mean what they HOPE you mean (that’s where the hope came in).

      Admittedly it’s a strategy that worked well four years ago with a media that refused to vet him and general displeasure in the republican leadership of the time. It’s not going to work nearly as well this time. But never discount the ability of the sitting president to buy votes….

    The only thing the Obama camp could have added to the commercial to get at some truth was his healthcare plan that failed then and wont work now, that would have gotten it down to 3 Pinocchios, But we know that Obama did that as well, so I guess they were stuck with all lies.

Hey, he just should have called it ” a novel about a wonderful if confused young big-racial , privileged , affirmative action kid trying to re-connect with his anti-colonial, angry African dad who left his ” ….oh, well…. he should have just called it ” a novel mix of fact and fantasy..” Would have been on Oprah’s book list …maybe it was anyway under that incorrect , non-fiction category ?       Obamas actions brings back memories of that snot-nosed little brat that picked his nose and ate the boogers and sat with his desk towards the window back in grade school.       Not an absolute truth as far as the NY Times goes. They did finally do a story on the coming economic collapse of the Euro earlier this week, plus they did finally report the truth concerning the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as well. They may still be so far up Obama‘s rear that they know what he’s going to eat for breakfast tomorrow, but a little truth is better than no truth, which is what they are used to doing.
