Fox News Airs Blistering ‘Then and Now’ Anti-Obama Video Review (Updated)

Fox News Fox & Friends Obama Hope and Change First Term Review

Editor’s note: See updates below.

Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday aired a scathing review of the first three years of President Barack Obama’s term in office, countering his “hope” and “change” motto with a series of “then and now” facts about the national debt, jobless rate, gas prices and more.

“What sort of change have we really seen over the past four years from the Obama administration?” co-host Steve Doocy asked by way of introduction.

The four-minute clip is a mash-up of the president’s speeches over the last three-and-a-half years, matching his promises and statements with the reality of rising costs. Starting with the frenzied “O-BA-MA! O-BA-MA!” crowd chants of four years ago, it’s quickly replaced by ominous tones.

“I pledge to cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term in office…All of us need to act more responsibly on behalf of a better economic future…Hope is the guiding force behind the most improbable changes this country has ever made,” Obama says, before his statements are countered with the national debt: “$10 trillion then“ and ”$15 trillion now.”

“We cannot wait for good jobs and living wages and pensions…Jobs must be our number one focus…We know it’s time to create the good-paying jobs, jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced,” he says, before the “then and now” jobless rate is highlighted: 7.8 percent then, 8.3 percent now.

Update: The Fox News video appears to be having technical difficulties; it may have been removed from their website. Any attempt to play it results in the following notice: “Sorry, we were unable to play the media you selected. Please try again, or select alternate media. Error encountered: Stream not found.”

Watch a YouTube version below:

Update II: Reaction to the video was swift on Wednesday: The leftist Media Matters for America said the program “crossed a new ethical line today by producing and airing what is essentially a four-minute anti-Obama attack ad” and later put out a “debunking” post.

Mediaite columnist Noah Rothman wrote that the “sharply edited and highly produced piece may cross a line…from journalism to advocacy“ and said it ”bore striking resemblance to a Republican party web ad.”

Washington Post media opinion blogger Erik Wemple wrote simply: “In a recent interview, Fox News chief Roger Ailes contended that he had 24 liberal contributors on his network. One guess: Those contributors played no role whatsoever in the creation of the video.”

At the conservative site Hot Air, Ed Morrissey pointed out that the “Fox & Friends Presents“ title in the video made it ”an explicit argument from the news channel itself.”

“Should a news organization produce and publish attack ads like this?” Morrissey wrote. “We usually criticize that kind of behavior with other news organizations….If anyone wanted to look for evidence that the overall Fox News organization intends to campaign against Obama rather than cover the campaign, this video would be difficult to refute as evidence for that claim.”

Update III: The video is again available through the Fox News website, albeit without the co-hosts’ introductions:

Update IV:Bill Shine, Fox News executive vice president of programming, issued a statement to TVNewser: “The package that aired on FOX & Friends was created by an associate producer and was not authorized at the senior executive level of the network. This has been addressed with the show’s producers.”

CALMARINE…’ENCINOM” has a number of screennames at the Blaze. “MONICNE” is another of his/her screennames. It’s a rather obvious one, it’s merely the reverse spelling of “ENCINOM”. And another name I can confirm for you that ENCINOM uses is “SLEAZY HIPPO”. ENCINOM/MONICNE/SLEAZY HIPPO is a media matters troll who has created different “lives” for each of his/her online personas. I refer to both sexes for ENCINOM because he/she has created different lives for each of his/her different screennames. Yeah…it gets that creepy with ENCINOM.

Your observations about ENCINOM/MONICNE/SLEAZY HIPPO are quite astute.

California – Thanks for your service.

Some consider my right honorable Australian friend to be a rakish but detestable alien who has embellished and fabricated whole swaths of his life for uninformed readers to swoon over. He lives for random compliments that sometimes occur when readers misunderstand his true objective, which is not to converse but to bleat out combative bile. He often seeks colloquy to spout his repetitive lies.

He has many obsessive theories about who people are, and a childlike stubbornness that makes folks eventually stop addressing him in first person. He is a lonely, parasitic fat Aussie obsessed with Batman comics and gays. He wears long hair, but attacks union women who are highly paid by media matters. (In his dreams.) But I am not attacking him, just telling you what he has bleated as he stalks.

I do not and do not want to know Encinom, and if he works for pay, then it’s a life! If he is just on line relentlessly like some of his critics, but without pay? What‘s AvengerK’s motivation and support? Riddle me that, Dark Knight! A mystery unfolds! The answer has already been revealed.

@AvengerK Hmm let’s see what Fox and of course the lemmings here regard as fair and balanced. Identification of the federal debt as starting at $10 trillion. No details on where the $10 trillion came from (Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. and no mention of the $ 1.4 trillion deficit that Bush Jr. left for 2009. I would assert that the last $ of debt is no worse than the first dollar. And federal debt not used for investments in infrastructure, education or technology is wasted. So he handed the PRESIDENT a $1.4 trillion deficit, 2 wars that were not paid for and the worst economy since the great depression. Interesting to see the staunch free market supporters here identify the President as having some influence or responsibility for the price of gas. The drilling response might have some traction if the industry wasn’t sitting on 200+ approved permits. The price of oil has more to do with the value of the dollar / Euro and refining capacity than domestic drilling and you know it. And I would imagine the rise in food stamps is a surrogate measure of how bad Bush’s recession and the impact of the Wall Street criminals really was. and of course how strong the food and retail food industry lobbyists are. The Fox and Friends goons are so obvious in their use of setup questions as to be laughable. Fraud and Unbalance…. that they can do. Just another example of starting with a desired answer, selecting the questions and facts to obtain the desired narrative.

Top three reasons Paulinistas should put aside their principals and patriotism and vote Romney.

1.Consistency – Mitt Romney has been unwavering in his public devotion to the principles and issues that would help to advance the political career of Mitt Romney.

2.Flexibility – Unlike Ron Paul who has been ridiculously rigid in his defense of the U.S. constitution, personal liberty, a balanced budget and the sanctity of life (so much so that he earned the nickname “Dr. No” in congress); Romney has shown that he is capable of rolling with the punches, going with the tide, changing with the times, and bending with the breeze.

3.National debt – Romney is against it. How do we know? Because he said so a whole lot of times in a very convincing tone of voice. And just as soon as he is elected president he will show us how we can eliminate the budget deficit without raising any taxes, eliminating any cabinet departments, reducing military spending, or cutting Social Security, Medicare, or any other popular program. How will he do this? Well he hasn’t explained his whole program but it has something to do with getting rid of all of those federal regulations that are smothering small businesses like Goldman Sachs.

JRook, your forgot to mention the unpaid prescription benefit plan that Bush passed.

I‘m amazed at the clueless on the website who say we don’t have a “revenue problem” we have a “spending problem.“ We do have a ”spending problem” and it’s not the paltry money spent educating young people or providing minimum health services we provide for the poor which Republicans used to support. The spending problem is that Bush started two trillion dollar discretionary wars on the opposite side of the globe on a credit card (not to mention the prescription benefit plan he also put on a credit card). And, for the first time in American history, and probably the history of the world, he dramatically CUT taxes during a war. You don‘t have to be a genius to realize that when you’re in the process of doubling the national debt, it’s not such a great idea to lower taxes, but that’s what the Republican do, because their donors make money (you gotta pay ‘em back right?)

Okay, so Bush cut taxes, did government revenue increase as is still the Republican opinion? No, of course not. Every dollar in reduced revenue resulted in exactly one additional dollar to the deficit. Were jobs created? No, not a one. Bush’s job creation record is the worst of the 20th century.

I’ve carried on. But my main point is something everyone knows. FOX isn’t a legitimate news organization, they’re the right arm of the Republican party, as videos like this show.

Regarding gas prices, anyone who falls blindly for the old correlation equals causation argument is either lacking in basic critical thinking skills or being willfully ignorant. BTW, I’ve also heard that 98% of U.S. citizens who have died in the last 20 years also ate carrots at some point in their lives. Carrots are bad!

“Fox and Friends” is fluff news no different than the Today Show or other morning shows. Although I agree this was most definately not “fair and balanced”, it’s no different than what other morning shows do accross the country. Fox News, like all other channels, has news segments and fluff segments. When this type of thing happens on a news segment, that’s where you have a problem. Soledad O’Brien, for example, is a “journalist” and an “anchor” who is supposed to be impartial. She’s not. And she does this all_the_time. That’s news. Not this.

News is an interesting topic. For decades, Americans watched their TV, and just assumed the news was just news, and did not realize the left leaning slant of Walter Cronkite and crew.

then came Rush and others on the AM talk radio, and their numbers started to grow, and folks started tuning in to something radical and new. The blinders came off, and the left got a bit scared.

Cable news was a new thing, and CNN had the market by the short hairs. Wolf Blitzer and his buddy stuck the iraq war in our face like never before seen. We did not realize how far left they leaned, because it was all so suttle

Then came Fox, and the whole world changed. We ended up having talks in the break room, or the water cooler, and these regular Americans had stories and facts that the rest were in the dark over. Little by little, it grew. That Bill guy got his own show, and folks liked his style, and his way of playing the middle, and making the left answer questions, they never had to answer before.

When fox turned on the lights, the other news did the only thing they knew to do. They stopped pretending, and just became out of the closet libs, fully behind socialism, democrats, marxist, Obama, Hillary…..

News will never be the same again. Now matter how much folks hate Fox, they will not get rid of it. IF it goes away, it leaves a huge void., and someone wanting to make billions will fill that void. The only way to stop it, is a full communist/socialist take over.

      MONICNE

The extended field stuff I did in Afghanistan was with the Afghani ANCOP. We ate rice and beans, cooked on the spot, with some occasional goat or chicken.

the Ausies were not allowed to patrol outside the wire, and just did staff stuff. They were good staff folks, but I never saw them do any of the fighting.

I worked with one of their Artillery Colonels, and we discussed much, to include politics. On several occasions, he stated that he feared the US was following in the same foolish steps as Britain and Australia, in letting gays serve. He claimed that it was like a cancer in his military (think of our Bradley Manning). He also spoke much on the gun control in Australia, and how gun violence went out of control when the government took hand guns.

I try not to be biased, but I did not see any of the other services in Afghanistan have the ability to go outside the wire, and take the fight to the enemy like the US. they may have better chow halls and comfort stuff, but most did not fight. You say that it shows how Fox is not “Fair and Balanced”. OK. Would you please point out the factual inaccuracies in the video? I noticed that rather than address the actual substance of the video, you attack the messenger. What is the purpose of a “news outlet”? Isn’t it to tell people what is going on? Well, in this case, everything they pointed out in the video happens to be true. They use President Obama’s own words, and contrast what he said with what he has done. Now, an Obama supporter may not like that because frankly it shows what a failure he has been on economic issues, but the fact that they don‘t like it doesn’t make it any less true. If you want to have a real impact at on the discussion, then please advance the ball by showing where they lied, misled, or otherwise distorted the truth. Otherwise, you are just whining. BTW, You should read the book “Left Turn” by Tim Groseclose. Groseclose is a UCLA prof who did the definitive study on media bias. As it turns out, when the news reporting of all the major outlets are compared objectively, FOX has the most balanced coverage overall (not counting it’s editorial shows). Again, you may not like that, but the numbers are solid. We are all entitled to our own opinions, but we are not all entitled to our own facts.

A wonderfully crafted video, but it should have been produced by an opinion based show like Hannity or Bill O’Reilly. If the Today show had made a similar video about Romney, all the people who are preening over this one would be howling about media bias. Fox News made a mistake in allowing Fox & Friends to produce this. It’s a shame that the Romney campaign did not make this very truthful and compelling video. Maybe the guy who put it together on Fox News should change his employers and get a position on the Romney campaign. It was brilliantly done.

So when has the reporting of actual facts and statistics become “a political hit piece”? Facts are facts. The news is supposed to be facts. The gas price is what it is and was what it was. That’s not opinion, that’s a fact. The deficit is what it is and was what it was. That’s a fact. Not an opinion. We’ve grown so accustomed to the news being a one-sided left-wing emotion-laden opinion, we’ve lost the whole concept of what news should be; facts. Thanks a lot, National Socialist Media.

A new Ford F-250 back in 2008 got 20 MPG unloaded and this truck met Tier 1 EPA regulations. A new 2012 Ford F-350 gets 14 MPG on Tier II and diesel now is as expensive as priemum gas. Cord back then was afordable and now you have to float a loan to buy. We are 1 of a few countries that burn our food for fuel. I read wheren 2 million Africans are going to starve this year for the lack of food. We should drill and sent thesae grains to starving people.Obama said it easn’t enough oil to go after in Anwar or the USA. I read in an industry magazine a copuple of years ago that if we opened up drilling a million folks could be getting a pay check and I don’t mean for 6 months or a year like Solendra.
