The social butterflies of the liberal blogosphere were all aflutter Friday after the University of Maryland released a study claiming that regular viewers of Fox News are the “most misinformed” when it comes to knowledge of American politics.
The UMD-commissioned study — “Misinformation and the 2010 Election: A Study of the US Electorate” — looked to judge how likely viewers of various news outlets were to believe false information (note: the study did not actually measure any sort of actual misinformation presented by some media outlets). According to the study, Fox viewers were “significantly more likely” to believe the following “misinformation”:
–Most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely)
–Most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points)
–The economy is getting worse (26 points)
–Most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points)
–The stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points)
–Their own income taxes have gone up (14 points)
–The auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 points)
–When TARP came up for a vote most Republicans opposed it (12 points)
–And that it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 points)
FNC has since fired back at the report, defending the content of its broadcasts and judgment of its viewers while simultaneously dismissing the study and its conclusions. Via the New York Times:
In a statement, Michael Clemente, who is the senior vice president of news editorial for the network, said: “The latest Princeton Review ranked the University of Maryland among the top schools for having ‘Students Who Study The Least’ and being the ‘Best Party School’ – given these fine academic distinctions, we’ll regard the study with the same level of veracity it was ‘researched’ with.”
Mr. Clemente oversees every hour of objective news programming on Fox News, which is by far the nation’s most popular cable news channel.
For the record, the Princeton Review says the University of Maryland ranks among the “Best Northeastern Colleges.” It was No. 19 on the Review’s list of “Best Party Schools.”
UPDATE:
Blaze reader Slobaphobe points out that among the study’s biggest supporters is the Tides Foundation. Coincidence?

Typical lib tactic. To “prove” what they want to “prove” they publish a lengthy “study” one which is based on their premises and thus gets desired conclusions.
Reminds me of moslems. First they commit violence then they say that this has nothing to do with islam and when you quote the relevant passages from the KKKoran in context with a number of fatwas and sermons held in any number of mosks around the world they tell you that you have everything out of context and that you should read the KKKoran.
That is how they try to get people to read their KKKoran. And libs do the same thing!
Of course liberal stink tanks hate Conservatives and America. So their “studies” will reflect that.
Do NOT be fooled by this sort of Propaganda, my friends!
That “study” is as concocted and confusing as the KKKorag!
Designed to obfuscate!
The fact that they have to conduct “studies” about how “informed” FOX News viewers are SPEAKS FOR ITSELF: They are WORRIED.
They are in PANIC MODE.
I know libs. And I just broke it down!
PS. libs: the “climate gate scientists” have been EXPOSED as FAKING results to suit their THEORIES! Remember those pesky emails? That leaks thing cuts both ways.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 5:44pmTIFOSA, face facts. The major degree given by the U of MD is a Liberal Arts degree. Like most of Maryland, it is mostly democrats with a few avowed ex-communists. There are a lot of elitist professors, like one Glendenning who became yet another worthless Maryland governor (known lovingly by most as “Spendenning”). The current governor, Owe’Malley is who provides most of the operating money for U of MD. Owe’Malley had Obama come to stump for him in the most recent election. And Obama is the one who told his pukes not to give any interviews to Fox News and encouraged all his followers to disregard Fox News and not treat it as a bonified news outlet. It is his intent, along with his stooge in the FCC, to shutdown Fox News (did you hear censorship in there somewhere?). See, these guys all pat each other’s back and play golf together. And this you trust? Wake up and get off those drugs.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 8:21pmYou may be very informed about what Fox thinks about one thing or the other, but that doesn’t mean that what Fox thinks is always right.
Fun fact: Fox News is, despite its name, not a news channel. It’s an entertainment network. Do you remember the court case where Fox “won” the right to broadcast blatant lies?
“On February 14, a Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization. The court reversed the $425,000 jury verdict in favor of journalist Jane Akre who charged she was pressured by Fox Television management and lawyers to air what she knew and documented to be false information. The ruling basically declares it is technically not against any law, rule, or regulation to deliberately lie or distort the news on a television broadcast.”

In all seriousness, though, I have to say this study is misleading. Just because FOX viewers are more suceptible to such misinformation, does not mean that FOX has put out misinformation.
Of course, to say that what Fox airs is their “version” of the truth is true in some sense. Someone has to decide what is and is not newsworthy, so there will alwyas be some bias to any news source.

The reporter in question had filed suit against FOX and the jury tossed out something like 10 of her 11 “legal” challenges. They only allowed that she “thought” she was “blowing the whistle,” and they allowed damages. FOX appealed (which by the way they should have done), and the court decided that the reporter did not meet the requirements to file suit under Florida’s Whistleblower laws. She and her lawyer chose the wrong way to bring suit. Never did the court rule that FOX could knowingly lie about news. You missed some of Spooky Dood’s groups, like Tides Foundation. Spooky Dood has declared war on Beck & Fox, and has already publicly donated about $1M to MediaMatters to hire “journalists” to do the smear…oops, I mean “investigating” of both Fox and Beck.
The Soros propaganda machine is in full D&D (Discredit & Destroy) mode. They have no regard for truth or accuracy, only advancing their ends by whatever means are necessary matters to these people. They need to shut down voices like Beck and opposition media like Fox News, talk radio, and the opposition voices on the internet.
The Progressives need to first demonize, discredit, and marginalize these opposition media sources in order to paint them as enemies of the State so as to make it more acceptable when they eventually decide to pull the plug on the First Amendment and shut them down completely.
However, they demonstrate yet again their seemingly-unerring accuracy with the old “foot-gun” by using this obvious propaganda-piece “study” against Fox and sending an already-discredited disgusting race-huckster like Sharpton against someone like Rush Limbaugh. Quite predictably, this has backfired badly on them and put them on the defensive.
I mean, c’mon! How could anyone not realize that sending Sharpton against Limbaugh on the battlefield of ideas is the intellectual equivalent of sending Pee Wee Herman up against Godzilla? Are the Progressives and Soros hoping people feel pity for the hopelessly-outmatched Sharpton as Limbaugh rips him to intellectual shreds on the battlefield of ideas?
A horrible miscalculation on the Progressive’s part however you slice it. Nobody is buying any of their propaganda anymore, and this just reinforces that mistrust in the public’s eyes just as every paid Progressive-shill propaganda post on internet forums like this one does.

Since there is no clear answer about who is right or wrong in the equation, it is unfair for one side to generalize the other side as being misinformed by using a bogus study that is based on reasoning clearly designed to favor one side over the other.
In essence, it is like asking a hippie and a soldier which one is stupider, they will both answer “the other guy”. And therefore, the entire study is flawed. How is it OUR responsibility where illegal aliens shlep their offspring to? They committed a crime by entering the country ILLEGALLY and should be treated as such.
I don’t think that anyone who has violated the laws should be given any future access to the country PERIOD.
They shouldn’t even be allowed to get in line.
There are many skilled law-abiding people who should be considered instead.
First of all the country should determine what kind of people and what skill sets it really needs before letting anyone immigrate for the time being.
The costs for security, supervision and surveillance are staggering already.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 12:37pmso, bro, you have no problem with Madoff’s children keeping all the money daddy got for them? Or (just guessing here) would you like to go after every one of his descendants to wipe out all money gains he garnered for his family and friends? In both cases, i’m good with chucking them all for being here illegally, and recovering all the money gained through illegal activity. I work with many people going through that 5 year line. They passed the 5 year mark several years ago, and are still trying to get in the door to this country. I know liberals have problems with control (self control; legal control; etc.) but is there a reason we can’t create a viable system to figure out who is coming in, when, and why? And eject those that are here illegally? Those kids would learn that mom and dad get in trouble for breaking laws too, so this could be one of their “learning moments” that Obama likes so much.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 2:34pmOkay, for what it is worth -
1. I don’t watch Fox News.
2. Most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely)
The money was given to the State. Other than our School District, our municipality has yet to see Stimulus funds. The school got two year’s worth of ARRA funding. That’s about to come to an end.
Our district has squeaked by without laying off classroom teachers for the last two years. Administrators and others have been either laid off or taken early retirement. For the ‘11-’12 school year, there is a very real possibility of having classroom teachers laid off.
3 –Most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points)
Uh, okay. Our family unit has three people. One of our close relative is disabled. Since October 2009, two of our immediate family no longer have medical coverage because the employee portion has tripled and we simply can not afford it. Our disabled relative has seen his insurance rates go through the roof and now he’s waiting to go on Disability.
I also know of a former municipal employee from a nearby city who retired early almost without notification because she would actually be required to have a co-pay for her health insurance if she actually waited the two weeks for her notification to process. She has also freely stated that she’s out to “get the city” for all “it’s worth”. How nice.
From what I understand, the GASBY requirements(from the Federal Office of General Accounting) will be requiring cities to deposit the full insurance amounts and the full amounts for retirement starting next budget cycle. Previously, it was a percentage of the costs, so if Joe retired with a $10,000 a year pension, the city would only be required to have $6,000 set aside for his retirement. Now, they will have to have the full $10,000 on hand.
2. Last year, my taxes did go up, both income taxes and property taxes. The sewer tax actually did go down by $75.00, but that was because we paid off the bond. This however, was offset by the $100 increase in both Federal income Tax and property taxes. I have receipts to prove this.
The economy is getting worse (26 points) Uh, didn’t they just have to extend Unemployment again last week? No further comment necessary on that!
–Most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points) Can I just say Wikileaks and leave that one alone? I don‘t want to go into the documents we found in our local museum archives talking about one year in the 1700’s that everyone referred to as the year with no summer, or the other weather vagarities we’re aware of for our local area.
–The stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points) I don‘t know whether that bloated legislative blimp did or didn’t include tax cuts. All I know is I personally paid more. We’re barely middle class. Who got the tax cuts?
–Their own income taxes have gone up (14 points) See above.
–The auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 points)
I don’t really know for sure if it was B.O. or not. I think it was. However, we bought a new vehicle in 2007. I know exactly how much a new vehicle costs. The people that drive older vehicles do so because they either haven’t saved up enough towards the replacement vehicles (not necessarily new) or simply because it’s all that they can do to pay for gas, licenses, registrations, insurance and repairs. Having someone trade in an old, serviceable vehicles for a NEW vehicle when they are in the second grouping makes no sense. A co-worker actually fell for this bogus deal and has had her car repossessed twice now because she can’t keep up with the payments.
–When TARP came up for a vote most Republicans opposed it (12 points)
Real Republicans or RINOS?
–And that it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 points)
What can I say? He’s been too secretive. It’s amazing. Nixon erased the phone tapes because he didn’t want his mother to hear him swearing, but it would have been a lot less fuss over a few curse words than it was when he was impeached and resigned. The more he stonewalls, the guiltier he looks.

Since you know so much about logic, then you are certainly aware of the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_hoc_ergo_propter_hoc): People who watch FOX News are more likely to believe misinformation, therefore FOX is disseminating misinformation.

I‘ve seen other reports and studies they’ve done. ALL of them have a liberal bias. With that said, isn‘t is LOGICAL to assume they would put that crap out there to TRY and defame the ONLY news source the average joe has that does NOT jam progressive bias down everyone’s throats?
Do you actually think MSNBC viewers are more LOGICAL or INFORMED? You liberals .. (you’re no independent) .. only have enough knowledge to be dangerous. They go ONLY to left leaning news sources. This leaves them with a gaping hole of missing truth in their lives. You must listen to both sides. I DO! I even have SOME leftist points of view! I do not know how the study was conducted, but let me explain how I determine truth and fallacy in an argument or study. If I find any evidence that suggests that any data have been skewed or appear erroneous I disregard the entire study. To me that sounds pretty fair. That said please review bullets 3, 6, & 9 from the results and then my notes after.
According to the study, Fox viewers were “significantly more likely” to believe the following “misinformation”:
1 Most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely)
2 Most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points)
3 The economy is getting worse (26 points)
4 Most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points)
5 The stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points)
6 Their own income taxes have gone up (14 points)
7 The auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 points)
8 When TARP came up for a vote most Republicans opposed it (12 points)
9 And that it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 points)
#3 When you live in a small town and have watched 30% of the small businesses close since Oct 2008, you do not need any news outlet or party-hard school to tell you the economy is getting worse. This is not misinformation- this is called observation.
#6 How in the heck would anyone else know if my income taxes have gone up, down, or stayed the same. Point is, if I choose to believe what is written on my pay stub that does not make me misinformed, that makes me logical.
#9 There is NO WAY you can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Obama was born here in the US or abroad. I would have to take somebody’s word that he was.
I have found 3 logical faults out of the 9 posted results. Thus, the entire study must be disregarded.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 3:49amI looked at the study. I would take it apart paragraph by paragraph but haven’t the time to waste. So instead, let’s start with point #1, which the study claims is misinformation
–Most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses
First, the study cites a panel of 55-60 economists and says 75% of them agree. From that, they conclude “most economists” agree. But there is no statistical analysis proving that the 55-60 are representative of all economists. So it would be wrong to conclude that “most” of all economists agree. Point #1 should have read:
–Most economists [in the group we looked at] estimate the stimulus caused job losses
Had they posed the question in that form, the answers would have been different because the respondents would have immediately recognized that the questioner had an agenda.
There are more problems like that. Many are discussed over at Patterico’s Pontifications, so I won’t bother with them.
Instead let’s concentrate on the problem of “sequential thinking.”
Let me give an example:
If I’m driving toward an intersection and I see a stop sign, I come to a stop.
Q: Did I stop because I
a) saw a stop sign
b) didn’t want a ticket
c) applied the brakes
All 3 answers would be correct. They are each components of the same sequence of thought. It would be disingenuous to pick one answer because it is “correct” and then conclude that anyone believing the other 2 answers is “misinformed.”
That is what is being done in point #1 (and pretty much all of the points). The problem is that 1) many Fox viewers are conservative and 2) conservatives are much better at sequential thinking than liberals.
Here is how a conservative would have analyzed point #1:
a) The stimulus took a trillion dollars from the private economy thus creating huge job losses.
b) The stimulus inefficiently added a trillion dollars back into the economy thus creating some jobs.
c) The net effect of the stimulus was job loss.
The conservative respondents looked at the sequence and saw job loss and assumed that the economists would see same thing. They were right. The economists did see that. But to get the answer needed for the study the economists were asked a question like, “Were there ANY job gains.” They answered yes, so the study concluded that “b” was the ONLY correct answer.
Again, liberals are very bad at sequential thinking.
(oh, btw, if any of you liberal jokers try to claim the economists said there were “net” job gains, you’re misappropriating the truth. The study cites the source. Check it. Also, keep in mind that “net” job gains for this study are based on zero population growth — common sense tells us job gains must meet or exceed population growth if we want to survive)
Overall, I give the students who did the study an F-. But I give them 5 bonus points for effective use of propaganda techniques.

Deddrich further found the true spiritual understanding of the reality of God in the suffering black population of the time.
Unfortunately not only have the progressives now sunk to new opinionated lows but the black community lost the insight of long since forgotten suffering and for the most part replaced it with hatred, racism, envy, and socialism. Even their reverends have turned their back on God and are stirring up their own communities to forget their First Love and embrace instead social strife.
What has this to do with the University Study. Guess!

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 10:39amAs usual liberalism collapses under its own weight . . . it’s the nature of things that are built upon lies and deceit stacked upon itself over time.
But seeing the nest where liberalism lives and breeds, to actually see it collapse and die is of another thing. Parasites that live in the mind, cockroaches, things of that nature, they have a way of escaping their demise.
And most unfortunately, the GOP is not fully equipped in their collective mind to lead a cultural revolution that will build proper momentum; it is too content at being the enabler of liberalism like a mother loves its spoiled and ignorant child to its death.
It will be up to the Tea Party to see to it that liberalism attends its own funeral even if it takes another hundred years of FOX News having to find intelligent woman to showcase the idiocy of liberal man-boys that step forward with their intellectual hands down their political pants . . . so to speak.

Fox news is not the only news organization who favors political ideology over mature and rational thought about governance and it’s role? There is not a news organization out there that would not give favored coverage of to a tyrant for the right price. Several news organizations have, openly, admitted they see and hear things that they are not allowed to report on or their press pass will be revoked for that nation.
You speak of rationality; is it rational to believe “the experts” who said, no more than 20 years ago, that the Earth was going into another ice age? Is it rational to believe “the experts” who continually cite economic growth while the jobless rate grows? Is it rational to believe “the experts” whose testimonies coincide with political agendas or dissenting opinions, who take the risk of having their study’s funding terminated?
You speak of mature responses; does the “worst person of the day” segment on MSNBC qualify as a “mature response”? Do the, unending, insults hurled at the “Tea Party” by news organizations and politicians, alike, qualify as mature responses? Is it mature to generalize Americans as stupid, fat, lazy, arrogant, and spoiled just because it’s lawmakers are? Does blaming the previous administration, when Democrats have had full control of Congress for four (4) years, sound like a mature response?
As far as I’m concerned, this is nothing more than an attack on Fox news because it refuses to conform to the established protocols; with regards to interviews and commentary. They have stolen a major portion of advertisers and viewers from the mainstream media stations who have responded, both rationally and maturely, to the loss of revenue.
The reasons for the loss of viewership and advertisers, by the mainstream media, should be apparent to the most hard-headed person… The vast majority of Americans are not happy with how things are going in their everyday lives, nor are they finding the excuses by mainstream media outlets and Washington, “rational”. So, they’ve turned to the new kid on the block – which happens to be Fox news.
The bottom line is that Americans, in general, are disgruntled and if our representatives in Washington were doing their jobs, Americans, in general, would not be listening to that “dissenting” point of view. They would, indeed, be happy to believe whatever they are told by the mainstream.

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 6:13am@docslammin, thanks for saying so little in so much, the epitome of fox news. I tried to make it clear that I understand Fox News is not alone in its distortions, however, I think they are the exceptional winner when it comes to a) pretending they are balanced, including blatantly lying to and deceiving their audience and b) working backwards from headline to substance by fabricating the data, emotions, and american opinions on issues that make for such sensational tv.
Report Post »This brings me to your next point. If Fox News devoted just a one-hour block of tv a day to meteorology and oceanography, the “debate” on global warming would evaporate. The cooling trends in the 70s are proof of anthropogenic climate change. The “experts” noticed a climatological swing to cooler temperatures that was more severe than those of the natural oscillation of the Earth. They postulated that further provocation by wanton pollution could tip the scale. Luckily, the planet rebounded JUST AS IT COULD AND WILL IN THE FUTURE. The problem here is the kind of oil/coal/naturalgas-based society we are propping up. If we continue our methods of industrial and energy production our descendants will certainly see severe and exotic climatic conditions that will reshape the ecosystems as we know them. It’s fitting that the country who benefits from our global oil addiction has the most genuine and self-deceived anti-environmentalists (CC deniers). And it’s sad that the people who would see the most catastrophic loss of life and civilizations are the poorest populations, but, hey, why start caring about them now? The ocean-atmosphere system is far more complex than most conservatives are considering. And if you‘re going to follow Beck’s lead by coyly quotating “experts” when referring to the scientific community then you should treat the rest of their collective inventions, improvements, and discoveries with equal skepticism and go live in a cave.
I can see why you immediately assumed I watch MSNBC, because you believe every American has to be as fervent a slave to one political partisan channel as FOX viewers are, but I try not to get my news from sources that exaggerate, prey on human emotions, value ratings and syndication over truth, or are funded by corporate sponsors. That being said, you‘re right that most of the media isn’t mature or rational because they adhere to said rules that apply to every privatized show, website, or radio station. I have to disagree with you on your tea party argument though. Unending insults is the least we can hurl at such a confused, hypocritical, and temperamental faux movement.
Last point, fox is not the new kid on the block or the victim of established liberal protocols. FOX NEWS crafts messages that surreptitiously defend the CAPITALIST MAN VS. NATURE ECONOMIC STRATEGY and the CAPITALIST INDUSTRIAL MILITARY, MAN VS. MAN, TRIBAL, XENOPHOBIC, INABILITY TO IMAGINE OR DESIRE GLOBAL PEACE.

I try not to sound condescending or rude but the reality of every issue presented on Fox is spun and muddled so much that viewers quit trying to see the opposing arguments. Like you, most of the people here are quite intelligent and educated, either formally or self-taught. It’s foolish for you and demeaning to others to believe that simply because they heard it on FOX News, they believe it is gospel. Your “reality” may not be the reality of many people outside your small circle of friends.
If you think the immediate response here was defensive, please take a look at your first post to Jasmine: “I understand you are on Glenn Beck’s payroll, and i understand you must have at the least a modicum of respect for his parent news corporation, but i urge you to take an objective look at the channel and the way it is distorting reality for millions of americans. Homophobia, xenophobia, paranoia and a favored political ideology that resembles a stubborn spoiled brat that refuse to think maturely and rationally about the very idea of governance is what Fox News stands for and therefore the views you share.” Really? If this was so, I’d have seen it. Perhaps I’ve not watched Fox News as much as you.
I’m certain such a humble entrance drew us to your words like moths to a light. You say you “thought I could discuss our failing society but it seems that everyone already has their minds made up.” But your posts proclaim something different, that it never was your intent to debate or discuss, because quite frankly, your mind is already made up.
Then you say “I try not to sound condescending or rude…” I’m sorry, but I don’t believe you tried not to, because you have personified both. For instance, in response to a thoughtful reply by Doc_Slammin, you say: “@docslammin, thanks for saying so little in so much, the epitome of fox news.” Endearing for sure.
You go on to identify “the problem with conservatives/tea partiers” but your premise is incorrect. You fail to consider the experience that comes with age. Some of us have been around long enough to see the same cycle returning with all the stupidity of the last time around. A bunch of puffed up, partly educated people telling those who have been around the block, that they don’t know diddly. After a while, it gets almost comical – but I’m not laughing.
Some of us agree with your decision to “…stop talking to the deaf because I’m getting nauseous…” and are pleased. Do I think I’ve reached you? Again, I wasn’t born yesterday. Where you are I once was. Where I am you may someday be (should you live long enough). So I don’t hold these things against you, honest.
