Fox News
Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee said he’s just continuing past practices in calling the Christmas tree in the Statehouse a “holiday tree.”
Chafee gave his answer to Fox News producer Jesse Watters, who went up to the governor in a hallway.
“Who exactly does a Christmas tree offend?” Watters asked Chafee, an independent.
Taken aback, he answered, “I’m continuing the past practice of previous governors that have instituted in calling this a holiday celebration.”
“But don’t you think you calling it a holiday tree offends more people than a Christmas tree?” Watters pressed.
“Well that‘s a debate that’s been going on for many years. When I was in grade school we had to say the Lord’s prayer. That no longer has occurred in public schools. This is a continuing debate of mixing of religion and government,” Chafee said.
When Watters pointed out that Christmas is a federal holiday and asked whether Chafee would like to repeal that, the governor looked increasingly uncomfortable and started to stammer.
“No I — ongoing debate about this subject and as I just said Lord’s prayer in schools is one of those…so it’s an ongoing debate,” he said. Referencing the state’s religious dissident founder, he added: “We’re trying to uphold the values of Roger Williams and make sure that the purity of theology is kept free from the pollution of government.”
Watters again, asking “But don’t you think a holiday tree…what holiday is it governor?” as Chafee was hustled away.

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 3:44pmTitle V Part III Subpart E, Chapter 61, Subchapter 6103 HOLIDAYS
By the law above, the following are national holidays shown in their accurate form for the United States of America:
The following are legal public holidays:
New Year’s Day, January 1.
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., the third Monday in January.
Washington’s Birthday, the third Monday in February.
Memorial Day, the last Monday in May.
Independence Day, July 4.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September.
Columbus Day, the second Monday in October.
Veterans Day, November 11.
Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November.
Christmas Day, December 25.
What part of Christmas does the DOFUS NOT UNDERSTAND!!!!
ENOUGH of this nonsense. December 25 is legally known as Christmas. Until the law is changed, it remains Christmas. I am getting so sick of the laws of our land ignored for the PC bunch. If they don’t like, get the law changed.

What is significant about that day of that month Governor? Would you seek to stop your office, staff and or constituents from taking the day off on December 25th knowing it acknowledges a religious occasion Governor? Do you believe it’s offensive to non-christians to take December 25th off knowing it’s a christian occasion governor?

From the homosexual lobby to the Reverend Wrights of the country, everybody on the far left is steeped in anti-traditional values and anti-Americanism. Those that don’t hate the country, don’t like it very well, nor its cultures and customs.

I love the irony of your post, a nation founded on the principal of religious tolerance and freedom, yet your post in defense of a pagan symbol on a pagan winter celebration is to repeat the bigotry that forced our foure-fathers to flee England.
The Founding Fathers rightly created a secular nation, a nation that outlawed religious tests and removed God from the government. You are no better than the Taleban and other religious zealots lookng to destroy this nation and creat a theocracy.

Just because Fox has the word “News” in their name doesn’t make them a reliable source. The Onion? that is a news organization.
Instead of discrediting him for the network he‘s on why don’t you WATCH the episode I conveniently provided you and then talk to me about facts.
In an effort to broaden my horizons I participate on this forum to ensure im the most informed on the issues. I go out of my way to watch the various news stations just to stay up to date on the facts and opinions. If you actually want to have an intelligent conversation with me, you will watch the episode and tell me your perspective.
If you‘d rather just live in your shell of opinions and misconstrued facts then that’s fine too. But don‘t dilute your perspective and think you’re being “fair and balanced” because in reality you’re just being “ignorant and biased”.
Someone should tell Fox to adopt that motto…

In 1854 the House Judiciary Committee said: In this age, there is no substitute for Christianity…That was the religion of the founders of the republic, and they expected it to remain the religion of their descendants.
In 1892 the S. Court stated: No purpose of action against religion can be imputed to any legislation, State or national, because this is a religious people … This is a Christian nation. There is no dissonance in these declarations. There is a universal language pervading them all, having one meaning; they affirm and reaffirm that this is a religious nation. These are not individual sayings, declarations of private persons: they are organic [legal, governmental] utterances; they speak the voice of the entire people. … These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation.

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 3:39pmIn 1870, President Grant signed a law making Christmas Day a federal holiday, a national day of celebration. It is a CHRISTMAS TREE and not a “Holiday Tree.” Should I call the chanukiah (Chanukah menorah) a “holiday candelabra?”
LYNCH v. DONNELLY, 465 U.S. 668 (1984) (http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=us&vol=465&invol=668)
(c) Our history is pervaded by official acknowledgment of the role of religion in American life, and equally pervasive is evidence of accommodation of all faiths and all forms of religious expression and hostility toward none.
“President Washington and his successors proclaimed Thanksgiving, with all its religious overtones, a day of national celebration and Congress made it a National Holiday more than a century ago. Ch. 167, 16 Stat. 168. That holiday has not lost its theme of expressing thanks for Divine aid any more than has Christmas lost its religious significance.
Executive Orders and other official announcements of Presidents and of the Congress have proclaimed both Christmas and Thanksgiving National Holidays in religious terms.
… display of the creche is no more an advancement or endorsement of religion than the Congressional and Executive recognition of the origins of the Holiday itself as “Christ’s Mass,” or the exhibition of literally hundreds of religious paintings in governmentally supported museums.”

I have had a few managers come and apologize to me on the way out of the store but had one that threatened to call the law on me if I did not return to the register and pay my bill.

Be happy that your cashier has a good attitude, I’m more upset with bad service than whether I can get them to parrot back things I demand they say. You think Jesus cares how many times you make others Merry Christmas? Instead, think about the two greatest commandments:

If PALERIDER feels he only wishes to do business during the christmas season with places that will acknowledge his “merry christmas” that’s his prerogative as a free citizen of this country and a consumer..as it is the shop keeper’s prerogative to refuse or accomodated him. Posted on December 8, 2011 at 7:07pmI say Merry Christmas. You say Merry Christmas. All well and good, but when at work, your cashier probably has been told not to reply to ANY holiday greeting, whether it be Easter, Christmas, or the 4th of July. I worked a part-time job last Christmas season, and wished my customers at the registers Merry Christmas until a manager told me to stop. They told me I would be terminated if I continued, so I stopped. Jobs are hard to find for a 57 year old widow. I hated just smiling at my customers when they wished me a Merry Christmas. I had a few make nasty comments, but at least I was able to stay at that job until I finally found a real one who, so far, has not made me follow some stupid pc rules.

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 11:38pmAt my job, it’s policy to say “Happy Holidays”. Last year I never said that, I always told all my customers, “Merry Christmas”. They smiled, some in surprise, and replied back, “Merry Christmas!”. All the other employees were saying “Happy Holidays”. Well, about a day or two, I don’t exactly recall, before Christmas, the main owner of the store walks in to visit. As he is saying goodbye to the store managers and employees, I shout out to him, from my cash register, “Merry Christmas!”. He looks at me, and gladly tells me, with a smile, “Thank you. You have a Merry Christmas too”. I felt very proud to have said it, and appreciative of his greeting. I’ll be saying “Merry Christmas” again this year. I have a few new managers. But I’m ready to give an answer to everyone who asks of my faith. Merry Christmas everyone!

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 3:55pm@Sick This isn’t about Republican or Democrat. I don’t know why it is that people assume thing about people just because of the party they choose. Just because I choose a particular party doesn’t mean I agree with everyone that says they are a Republican. For you to sit there and say well the guy before was a Republican and he said the same thing so if both someone from both parties is saying it then its Ok. NO its not ok. It’s Christmas plain and simple. If you don‘t like it or it offends you then don’t participate in it. I don’t care. Don‘t buy your kids anything don’t put up a try don’t go to the tree lighting in your town. Nobody is putting a gun to anyone’s head and making them go. You want to have your own little party and put up your own tree and call it a Holiday tree and have others come that would otherwise be offended by the name Christmas go right ahead it is a free country, or don’t for all I care sit at home and do whatever you want to do. But just because its a free country doesn‘t give you or anyone else the right to go around removing Christmas from everything for everyone else that Christmas doesn’t offend. That Republican Gov. before this one should have been called on the carpet as well. Its not about being a Republican or Democrat.

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 4:07pmthe “big deal” SICK is that what’s going on is clear…atheists and leftists (mostly) take offense to open displays of religious symbols (mainly Christian ones) because of their veiled and not-so-veiled hostility towards Christians, not for any purported constitutional issues. IF these same peeple were TRULY offended, they’d insist we stop taking December 25th off as a national holiday (where many Federal, State and Local agencies also take the day off) as it clearly observes a Christian occasion. What say you SICK? Let’s stop taking the day off Christmas Day? Oh and don’t give the kids any presents that day either…the day is no different to any other day right?

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 2:51pmI agree with the “who cares” part…Who cares about what someone calls a tree, put up, someplace I will never go to see such tree…I don’t care that you call it lame..don’t care someone else calls it a holiday tree..Why is it so many’s main focus…Call it what ever you like or don’t call it anything but a tree..I know what the tree means to me and that’s All I care about.

Report Post »Wonder how old you are? Have a job? If you work for a living are you going to skip Christmas and go to work? Why not? Boss close the joint down for Christmas? Why not you take the day off and donate another day to the boss to make up the day you stole from him? Oh I see. It don’t work like that. Well good luck in life cause your sure going to need it. When you suck for that last breath just remember who gave you that breath in the first place.

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 3:36pmA country dominated by televangelism would be unrecognizable to the Founding Fathers, who envisioned religion as personal and spiritual, not social and political. No particular variety of religion was intended to control the political agenda, to set the community’s moral tone or to judge who are the true believers and members of our society.

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 4:00pmG.E.R.D. – I mean GER – no one wants a religion to run our gov’t. We just want people to recognize that Christmas is just that. They get a federal holiday because of Christ’s birth. If you hate it so much, petition the gov’t to repeal that federal holiday. Along with Easter.

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 4:25pmThe United States does not have national holidays in the sense of days on which all employees in the U.S. receive a day free from work and all business is halted. The U.S. federal government can only recognize national holidays that pertain to its own employees; it is at the discretion of each state or local jurisdiction to determine official holiday schedules

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 2:23pmGood for the Fox producer. These little wormy lib politicians who want to water down Christmas need to be addressed harshly. We have had Christmas trees and nativity scenes for over a century now and no one cared. Suddenly with the appearance of the obama regime…the anti-Christians seem embolden and have begun their attacks in earnest. We will fight them in every way.
