Fox Shoots Hunter

A Belarus man is in the hospital with a leg wound after a fox he was hunting got revenge and shot the man with his own gun. Yes, you read that right.
Reuters says the hunter approached the fox after having shot it from a distance. Seeing the fox was wounded, the hunter tried to finish off the animal with the butt of his rifle. That’s when the two scuffled, allowing the furry creature to make its move.
“The animal fiercely resisted and in the struggle accidentally pulled the trigger with its paw,” one prosecutor was quoted as saying.
There are no reports that the fox did his best “Dirty Harry” impression before pulling the trigger, but some are hoping they surface.
And yes, the fox did get away.

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 7:59amYeah, I’m all for hunting and gun rights .. but first off I see no reason to hunt Fox. They aren’t a viscous, overpopulated species like some wolf breeds in America. Nor are they a great food source. This man was hunting for sport. I find that disgusting, honestly. Furthermore, beating a wounded animal to death with the butt of your rifle? You deserve to get shot, honestly. Put it out of its misery cleanly with a shot to a vital area. Don’t make the damn thing suffer a slow death.
This guy gives gun owners and hunters a bad name. Maybe next time he’ll think before he tries to bludgeon something to death again.

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 8:09amAh, I wasn’t wearing my glasses. Guess I missed that part.
Still, my point is valid. Foxes are not a species that will endanger an ecosystem like some wolves do in midwest and northern US states. The culture there is very different, but there is still no reason to hunt a Fox other than sport. Oh, and again .. if you try to bludgeon a wounded animal to death with the butt of your Mosin Nagant, you deserve to get shot.

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 8:10amHey, back off.
First, foxes are predators that go after livestock: chickens and sheep. So hunting them is a legitimate form of pest control. Like in most fox hunts, whether with dogs or without, the healthier foxes escape while the weaker and sicker ones are caught. This is good, as healthy foxes go after livestock less tha sick ones. Animal traps are both cruel and counterproductive in this regard, as they do not discriminate between healthy and unhealthy animals.
Second, the hunter was trying to put it out of its misery, just without wasting another bullet. A quick strike to the head is as merciful as a bullet. A lot of beef cattle are killed that way, with a mallet blow to the head.
Report Post »Jsh1284
Posted on January 14, 2011 at 8:27amPest control? They are a part of the natural ecosystem in that area. I can understand the logic if they are out of control. The problem is, they aren’t overpopulated in that area. Actually, their numbers are starting to dwindle. See, when that happens, the environment changes. Then, its PRIME sources of food tend to overpopulate. When this happens, it causes much more problems for your average farmer or rancher.
Again, wolf hunting in the midwest etc is perfectly understandable. There are breeds which are seriously causing problems for people with farms etc. They are also killing off the deer and other wildlife because their numbers are ridiculous and they are the top dog in those areas. In such a case, hunting is justified.
I actually did a little research, and in rural farming areas of Belarus, Fox hunting is a popular SPORT. Not necessarily a NECESSITY to keep their livestock safe. If this was the case, sure, go hunt some Fox. Otherwise, stop destroying your local environment.
BTW I’m no tree hugger. I hunt. I am also an advocate of keeping your local wildlife balanced so the areas you hunt in will be suitable FOR hunting .. say .. 10-20 years in the future as well.
Report Post »Jsh1284
Posted on January 14, 2011 at 8:28amAlso, the fur trade is big in that area as well. There is a good chance he didn’t want to shoot it in the head was because it would damage the most valuable part of the pelt
Report Post »Islesfordian
Posted on January 14, 2011 at 9:22amWell I don’t know Belarus. But I know England, where fox hunting has been banned. Foxhunting in England was both a form of pest control as well as a sport and community event. One doesn’t preclude the other. All the arguments in banning it there ignored the real ecosystem as it has evolved under human agricutural development.
There really is no such thing as THE natural ecosystem. Human beings always change it, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 11:23am@JSH, foxes are considered a pest by many because they kill chickens and other fowl on farms, and also cats (which earn their keep by mousing). That’s how fox hunting got started.
Report Post »Not saying that he WASN’T trophy hunting, just saying that in agrarian societies foxes are considered pests.

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 2:09pmAnyone that lives outside of a metro area knows that foxes are considered vermin. Cute and fuzzy but still vermin. They kill farmers animals that are their livlihood. In Colorado, they will kill any small pet they find. Unfortunately, in semirural areas, we are not able to use guns and strycnine is hard to get now adays with out of the bleeding hearts out there.
