FOX’s Eric Bolling Discusses Faith, His Baseball Past & ‘Hateful Atheist’ Bill Maher With The Blaze

Eric Bolling Speaks About Bob Beckel, Atheism, Tim Tebow & More

FOX News' Eric Bolling

Eric Bolling has made a name for himself as an outspoken conservative commentator who isn’t afraid to make his voice heard — loud and clear — on the important issues of the day.

The host of FOX Business’ “Follow the Money” and FOX News’ “The Five,” Bolling has an intriguing background that, in many ways, explains how he has landed on the conservative side of the aisle. I had the opportunity to interview him earlier this week and we delved into a number of subjects — his faith, background and his take on some of the most interesting people in politics and media (including leftist and co-host Bob Beckel).

Among the elements we discussed, his upbringing was the most intriguing. Bolling, who has by all indicators become a major success, comes from a very humble background. In fact, his rise to on-air prominence isn’t something the commentator would have predicted years ago when he was growing up in the inner-city of Chicago.

He comes from a very poor background — one that, in many ways, motivated him to work diligently toward success later in life.

“I always had that need to get myself out of [poverty],” Bolling explained.

While he says that his parents didn’t have a lot, they were hard workers who instilled in him important values and ethics. Those elements helped catapult him forward, later igniting his career and leading him to media success.

“We didn’t have a lot, but they [his parents] were always like, ‘That’s what you want to be,’” he explained, highlighting that his parents would point out examples of success and encourage him to strive towards them. “They instilled that in me.”

Bolling described a defining childhood moment, during which he first realized that there is, indeed, a class structure in American society.

“When I was young 10 or 11 year old my mom took me to buy sneakers,” he explains. “I wanted the PRO-Keds, and she said ‘We can’t afford them.’ It was the first time I realized there were classes — and we weren’t part of the class that could afford PRO-Keds.”

Following college, Bolling hit the ground running when he was drafted in 1984 by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Having made his way onto the ball field, he was looking forward to a long and prosperous career. Unfortunately, life threw a curve ball when the young player suffered a tear in his rotator cuff.

“I was let go by [the team] right away,” he said. “I was then thrust into this world of ‘now what.’ So, I went back to Chicago and tried to figure things out…baseball was all I knew.”

Eric Bolling Speaks About Bob Beckel, Atheism, Tim Tebow & MoreHaving set his sights on a long baseball career, this new reality — that he would need to choose another path — was difficult for Bolling. But it wasn’t long before his drive and determination to progress landed him in New York City, where his unique career in business and media began to take form.

Bolling became an independent trader based out of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). When he rallied enough money, he leased a seat and worked for himself, eventually serving as both a strategic advisor and on the NYMEX’s Board of Directors.

“I found myself on the trading floor in New York,” he said. “I was self-motivated and worked for myself and put it together.”

So, where did his career in media begin, you ask? Well, according to Bolling, around his 16th or 17th year trading commodities, he spoke with a CNBC reporter. Inevitably, he made such a positive impression after explaining his business knowledge that the network found interest in his expertise. As a result, he became a panelist on “Fast Money,” a show featuring stock tips and market information.

Later, FOX News came calling and the rest is — well — history. Today, Bolling is a staple at both the news and business networks, as his unique and unabashed commentary often adds elements of intrigue and entertainment to on-air discussions.

Eric Bolling Speaks About Bob Beckel, Atheism, Tim Tebow & More

When it comes to his daily gig on FOX’s “The Five,” Bolling couldn’t be more enthralled by the experience. “I love it,” he said, as he enthusiastically described his fellow hosts – especially the ever-liberal Bob Beckel.

“Look at what I get to do. I get to sit next to the most lovable leftwing nut,” he jokingly said (clearly referring to Beckel). “I can fight with him for the full hour and the minute we walk outside — if someone says something bad about Bob, I’ll step out and defend him.”

It should come as no surprise that Beckel is Bolling’s favorite co-host to spar with.

“Sometimes, we take over the segment more than the other hosts would like,” Bolling quipped. “He’ll throw stuff out there — he’ll throw a number out there and expect it to go unnoticed.”

Bolling was also candid about his appreciation and admiration for FOX News President Roger Ailes.

“The man has reinvented cable news,” he said. “The guy sees dead people in TV news.”

Eric Bolling Speaks About Bob Beckel, Atheism, Tim Tebow & MoreBut Ailes wasn‘t the only person who Bolling mentioned when I asked him to name the most impressive individual he’s encountered in media and politics. He went on to say, “If I could spend a weekend with five people — it would be Glenn Beck, Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Ailes.”

Bolling has made headlines in recent months for his defense of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow and his on-air sparring with a well-known atheist. During our discussion, Bolling addressed the attacks on Tebow, atheism and the War on Christmas, among other subjects. Based on our interview and his intensive on-air defense of Tebow, faith is clearly important to the commentator.

“I’ve been a Catholic – a Christian — my whole life. I go to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral every day and I light candles,” he said. “It’s important for me to stand up for Christianity.”

To Bolling, defending Tebow is simply the right thing to do. He dismissed comedian Bill Maher’s attacks on the football player as “a need to be in the public eye” and stated his belief that atheists’ attacks on Christmas intensified in 2011.

“Why is it that some of these atheists and liberal hate-mongers are willing to trash Christianity, but they tiptoe around Islam and other faiths?,” he asked. “But they have no problem trashing Christianity. I felt the needed to stand up and call Bill Maher out for what he is — a hateful atheist whose using Tebow for his own buzz.”

On the topic of atheism, we also discussed a recent appearance on Bolling’s “Follow the Money” by Dan Barker of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The exchange made headlines when Bolling threw Barker off the air, as the two discussed Christianity and the FFRF’s attacks on nativities and other Christian symbols.

Watch the incident, below:

“He was looking for the platform to spew anti-Christian rhetoric,” Bolling explained. “I threw him off the show — it was spontaneous. The third time I asked him to stop [the rhetoric] I threw him off.”

The interview with Bolling was refreshing on a number of levels. Rather than weighing his comments intensely, he was honest and open, while candidly sharing his stance on a wide array of situations and issues. Perhaps he was taking his own advice, which he gave when speaking about politicians – ”Don’t change — be true to yourself and be true in all aspects.”

First of all, Bill Maher isn’t an atheist. He’s nothing. His belief is that no one knows and he’s never claimed atheism. But Christians tend to use that term for anyone who doesn’t believe in God.

Also, Maher has NEVER shied away from mocking all religions, ESPECIALLY Islam so this guy doesn‘t really know what he’s talking about.

      No wonder he’s on FOX

meh, you can take it how you want. Bill Maher has said, himself, that he thinks atheists are just as assuming as believers. His religious outlook is literally, “I don’t know. No one knows.” and he mocks those who think that they DO know. Simple as that.

I do admire Eric Bolling (and the parents who raised him) and I do enjoy the different venues he has been appears on. That said, I also enjoy “The Five” especially because of Eric and his fellow hosts, even Bob Beckel. It has taken me years to come to the point where I could take Beckel with a grain of salt, but I finally am able to. I enjoy listening to his point of view in the hope I will learn something I have not known until now.

All that said, I especially enjoy Dana, Greg and the other “hosts” who help make this program a hit in the middle of a dry afternoon. I have to thank Fox for bringing us Eric, Greg and especially Dana. She never comes across as a “know it all” and her presentations are always given in good taste, something sorely lacking in the main stream media. Her remarks are generally well prepared and I always learn something from her. Same goes for Greg. His “spin” is absolutely refreshing. The other girls are really interesting also.

I certainly hope Eric enjoys a very long run on Fox Business Network; I wish the Business Network came with Fox News as a package on TV, but I can usually catch up on some of the Business news on line.

Thank you again Fox for Eric and the rest of your genuine stars. Thank you Glen Beck for the staff you chose from The Blaze to write this touching article. Good Job!

Two personalities at Fox News who stand out: Neil Cavuto and Eric Bolling. Both men are more interested in discussing and debating topics Vs providing an hour-long monologue that includes disputing most of what the guest experts put forth. Both men always conduct themselves in a dignified and professional manner.

Why Fox wastes the 5PM hour with a show that includes the obnoxious and rude Bob Beckel and the know-it-all and sanctimonious Dana Perino is beyond me. Were they to put Kimberly Guilfoyle and Eric Bolling in the same time slot/format Fox would definitely attract a larger audience.

(Occasionally, he softens and is actually likable) I really like Dana and get a kick out of Greg for the levity. I do get a bit tired of many of the gals on FOX who show more of the breast than necessary. Almost feel like I’m waiting to see them give a lap dance from how much they show. I suppose they’ve been told to show it off for ratings, but I don’t watch for the boobies. The long black haired gal shows the most, others are more respectful.

I would be angry too, except that’s an excuse for not facing the truth of the Bible. No one is cramming it down your throat, stuffing it up your nose, beating you over the head or otherwise. You simply are angry because you seek the truth and don’t like the truth when you hear it.

I believe there’s a sect within the Church that do miss the point of God being the only one worthy of judging other men, and “he has no sin cast the first stone”. I am ANGRY because corrupt politicians are stripping us our GOD-GIVEN rights, robbing us blind and lying to us, and that that sect, I referred to, is aiding them. I am SAD that throughout my search for God, I’ve found only sanctimony and hypocrisy. That being said, I live my life based on the principles I learned going to Saturday Mass with my paternal grandmother, and a generic protestant small town chruch with my mother on Sunday mornings. To be god, even if it is just your own personal god of self is to replace God as the supreme being with self. Therefore, atheist suffer from a god complex. I get sick of you people asking, “How is this news worthy?” Who are you people? Lou Grant clones? Is this the only website you visit? Do you know what a magazine feature is? Have you ever read Reader’s Digest? Have you seen the format of U.S. News and World Report or NewsMax magazine?

You ignorant dorks need to keep one saying in mind. “It is better to keep your mouth shut and keep people guessing how stupid you are, as opposed to opening your mouth and taking away all question.”

I am always happy to have something a bit lighter to read. If all you read is the doom and gloom that is the legacy of the Obama administration, you could become a very bitter person. I think some people are just so worried about the future of our country that they can‘t concentrate and don’t want to concentrate on anything else. I can understand that, and they do have the right to skip anything lighter if they want to, but that doesn’t mean that the rest of us have to be denied the opportunity.

Eric has the right still to speak his mind which he does very well—-the only people who have control over what he says would be Fox News and Fox Business! Obviously they embrass Eric and what he says—when Obama takes over control over what we Americans have to say, then the end of the USA will be at hand! Until then Eric and the rest of us who live by the Constitution can say whatever we want because we are still free—at least as of today!

Accepting Jesus isn’t good enough for those who want someone to take the bible and beat people with it until they conform to their believes. Same phylosophy as the Muslim extremist, different savior.

For the most part, I agree. I was a little upset last week when he mentioned that, other than people wanting to do drugs, he just doesn’t understand RP enthusiasts. Whether you agree or disagree with RP, there‘s no way anyone who’s the slightest bit observant doesn’t understand what RP supporters want. It‘s not like we’re not in your face it about.

I have not been able to follow Eric as well as you claim. But, I observed something different. First, it seemed that Bolling really jumped on the Perry train, and Beckel gave him a hard time about it on The Five a number of times. He also had a lot to say about Cain for a while, but only now seems to have been funneled down to praising Romney. I don’t care for Romney myself, but will hold my nose and vote for him should be become the candidate. Since Nixon’s second term I have held my nose to vote for a Republican as a lesser of two evils with the exception of Reagan and fully expect to do the same again this year. I will not hold this against Bolling or others for that point of view. In my opinion anybody is better than 0bama.

It is pretty banal, but I usually watch it and somewhat enjoy it. I like the mix of personalities and the fact that despite their diverse views they not only tolerate each other but actually seem to enjoy themselves. Maybe that is just the way I am…I do not mind people with opposing views to mine and I enjoy talking to them…As long as they are open and respectful back…

Take Bob Beckel. For over a year I only knew him as the FNC liberal spokesman, even more left than Juan Williams. He is screwed up, I wonder where and why he got his ideology, especially when you compare him to his very conservative brother. But in watching the 5 I have come to like Beckel, and I even understand him somewhat. He is not as liberal as he and others think. Sometimes he is way out in left field, but other times he can be pretty close to being right. But putting aside his political beliefs, he seems to be a good guy, a Christian, with a heart of gold. Yeah…I can like Beckel despite our differences…

This is why I do not mind shows such as the 5.

I used to be a fan of Eric Bolling. Watched his show from Money Rocks to when he changed it Follow the Money and was happy when he got another show “The Five”.

However, after months of Bolling shoving Romney down my throat on every show either as an anchor or a quest, I refuse to watch him any longer.
