‘FrackNation’ Filmmaker Responds to Another Alec Baldwin Anti-Fracking Article: ‘Unacceptable’

Filmmaker Phelim McAleer of FrackNation Asks Alec Baldwin and Josh Fox Wheres the Science?

Actor Alec Baldwin has spoken out widely against hydraulic fracturing (fracking) — the process used to harvest natural gas from shale rock. In his latest, he writes a guest piece on the Huffington Post’s blog calling upon “Gasland” filmmaker Josh Fox to provide information so Baldwin can ”address the ‘deniers’ who have debunked his assertions.”

TheBlaze contacted another documentary filmmaker — Phelim McAleer — who is producing “FrackNation,“ a film that says it will ”tell the truth about fracking” and that McAleer says is nearing the end but is still in editing. His general response to Baldwin‘s assertions and Fox’s information: “where is the science?”

Fox’s response to Baldwin includes the following:

1- This 2009 piece from ProPublica that refers to a Garfield County, Colorado, study that contradicts certain gas industry assertions about methane in drinking water.

2- This 2011 report from Scientific American that describes significant aquifer contamination from fracking fluids in Wyoming.

3- A 2011 New York Times article that refers to the potential “first crack in the armor” of Rex Tillerson’s claims about fracking-related contamination.

4- This article from Food and Water Watch in April of 2012.

5- And this article from a March, 2012 issue of Rolling Stone.

Baldwin then goes on to acknowledge the arguments of the “deniers” — he realizes “not many minds will be changed here” — but calls out gas companies who he believes will leave states with abundant natural gas reserves after they’re done “blasting and pumping and contaminating” without water for “cooking, cleaning and drinking” when all is said and done.

McAleer first calls out the evidence Fox provided to to Baldwin.

“I won’t base the future of Americans …of all people who need energy on articles from Rolling Stone and ProPublica,” he said. “This is what we’re going to do in FrackNation, take all the scare stories to scientists. When you do that…it’s amazing how quickly these scare stories disappear.”

In July, TheBlaze reported a story from the Associated Press that revealed many scientists say the health and environmental concerns held about fracking lack scientific backing:

For example, reports that breast cancer rates rose in a region with heavy gas drilling are false, researchers told The Associated Press.

Fears that natural radioactivity in drilling waste could contaminate drinking water aren’t being confirmed by monitoring, either.

And concerns about air pollution from the industry often don’t acknowledge that natural gas is a far cleaner burning fuel than coal.

As for this last point, a more recent report released on Thursday of this week by the Associated Press had scientists attributing increased natural gas use to a drop in carbon dioxide levels to 1992 levels. Some health experts hailed this in the report as well.

McAleer though focuses on Fox’s claims from his most recent short film “The Sky is Pink” that contamination from fracking leads to breast cancer. Here‘s some of what scientists and cancer experts had to say in the Associated Press’ July report:

But researchers haven’t seen a spike in breast cancer rates in the area, said Simon Craddock Lee, a professor of medical anthropology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

David Risser, an epidemiologist with the Texas Cancer Registry, said in an email that researchers checked state health data and found no evidence of an increase in the counties where the spike supposedly occurred.

And Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a major cancer advocacy group based in Dallas, said it sees no evidence of a spike, either.

“We don’t,” said Chandini Portteus, Komen’s vice president of research, adding that they sympathize with people’s fears and concerns, but “what we do know is a little bit, and what we don’t know is a lot” about breast cancer and the environment.

“It’s just really unacceptable that people are using the scare of breast cancer,” McAleer said. “It’s very nasty to use it unfairly and inaccurately.”

Here Baldwin is seen in June talking about the alleged link between cancer and fracking as well as his economic concerns about the areas affected by fracking:

McAleer said Baldwin is stepping up efforts against fracking as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo approaches a decision on whether to allow fracking within the state or not. In June, Baldwin held a screening of “Gasland” in Syracuse with scientists and other experts on a panel. In a separate blog post for the Huffington Post, which he cross-links from Friday’s post, Baldwin writes he wants to “address the lack of caution of the Cuomo administration and its failure to present the facts to New York residents about the potentially staggering risks of the natural gas industry’s plans for the New York and beyond.”

These efforts could also be setting Baldwin up as reports have said he might be consider a run for mayor of New York City. The New York Times reported last week Baldwin would consider running but not in 2013 race.

      Actually, I agree with the anti-frackers with an exception. Regardless of medical evidence fracking is a bad idea because you are destabilizing the earth and bedrock under vast regions of peoples property. Just like I am not against coal per se but removing mountains to do it is not a sound practice.

      The USGS says that the region is no stranger to quakes, though they are indeed rare. Its website notes:

      “The Northeast Ohio seismic zone has had moderately frequent earthquakes at least since the first one was reported in 1823. The largest earthquake (magnitude 4.8) caused damage in 1986 in northeasternmost Ohio, and the most recent damaging shock (magnitude 4.5) occurred in 1998 at the seismic zone’s eastern edge in northwestern Pennsylvania. Earthquakes too small to cause damage are felt two or three times per decade.”

      Most of you complaining about fracking interfering with your water might want to check and see where your drinking water comes from. Many are complaining only to find out their water comes from a resorvoir.

      Underground aquafiers are located above the shale and unless they drill through the aquafier to get to the shale the is very little chance of the fracking chemicals or the natural gas seeping into the aquafier, it would have happened already.

      You folks complaining are the same folks who willingly give up your rights after every false flag that is being created by the progressive socialist to scare people into allowing the government to protect you.

      The government has already failed you. You are stripped search at the airport while illegals and drugs are freely transported across the border that our government refuses to secure. The one thing our federal government is responsible for under our Constitution.

      Who are put in more danger by our open borders than we are from Fracking.

      How many people have died from smoking? What has our government done to make that illegal? Pass laws to restrict where it can be done? Will you allow them to keep you from smoking in your own homes?

      We have a home here in Susquehanna County in Northeastern PA and I can see a drilling derrick from my Deck…The amount of economic activity is astounding and there has not been a single incident of pollution outside of a couple of spillage problems, and that is inherent with any economic activity…and they were all cleaned up…The economic benefits to the sand mines in Wisconsin and the guar gum growers in India is also astounding…And the gas…we can heat homes and power industry for hundreds of years.     I think this just muddies the issue. Regardless of who might jump on either side of this, or their reasons, this is about the people living on land near where these processes are taking place. The issue isn’t whose point of view is backed by science, but that there has been very little scientific research done to back either standpoint.

    It‘s easy when it’s not on your doorstep to write it off, particularly when one of the many ‘liberal anti-christ poster boy’ types is connected to it, but if it were on my doorstep I’d expect to see more investment in ensuring the safety of the process and this investment has to come from the government and be independent of the companies using these processes.

    There’ll will always be exaggeration and denial on both sides of an issue like this, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore the issue as a whole, as I said there are people that have to live with fracking on their doorstep and I don’t believe it is unreasonable that they should wish to be reassured (and a little less trying to scare them would be good as well).

    It seems to me that a “cause” is a necessary fashion accessory for the glitteratti. Sort of the cebebral version of the miniature pink poodle in the designer handbag.

    Being an authority on the subject doesn’t seem to be as necessary as being clearly visible in “raising awareness”. One’s cause is something to talk about at parties, I suppose, and to compare with other’s “causes”. One’s sincerity, as with all sincere things in Hollwood, is measured in column inches.

    It is all harmless enough, of course, until it detrimentally impacts on the lives of the general public. That is when the vapid waffle of these carefree poseurs becomes dangerous.

    It was pointed out to Mr Baldwin that he didn’t leave the USA as he promised he would in his last little piece of theatre. He didn’t mean it literally, it seems.

    He was just “raising awareness”.

    I can’t stand this guy, but there are always consequences to screwing..Fking with things that are not fully understood. Fracking and the consequences of it are not fully understood nor predicted. If it becomes a regular thing around the world there are going to be negative effects to the planetary life. Anyone that thinks that extraction of energy in such a way does not have potential hazards is the fool that says splitting the atom and extracting energy in that way has no negative effects.

      Have to agree with you on that. Did some reading on the subject and have found that similar seismic activity is occurring near other fracking sites in Arkansas and Texas. In my humble opinion there should be more studies made by the oil companies and an ability to work hand in hand with the USGS. Okay, if the USGS is willing to work with them and not just screw with them.

    He’s just doing what he does best: repeating things other people have told him to say. That’s what actors do. Unfortunately for him the ones he is repeating are all wrong.

    If methane (natural gas) really does cause global warming (it doesn’t) and if it leaks out of the ground naturally (It does) then our best bet to combat global warming is to get it all out of the ground as quickly as possible, so it can be burned s fuel.

    I’m being a little sarcastic here, but everything I’ve said is true. It really does seep out of the ground in many places around this country. It’s also called “swamp gas” because it emanates from lots of swamps as well as other locations. Google it, it’s true!

      Alarmists seldom study the facts, which is the kindest thing that one can say about them, because, if they have, then they are being intellectually dishonest – as with global warming.

      Remember the ozone hole panic? Chlorine, as in chlorofluorocarbons, denatures ozone. This is true. What was omitted from the arguement, however, was the fact that almost all the chlorine in the atmosphere comes from transfer of chlorine from the ocean’s surface. (Sodium chloride is salt.)

      There was enormous economic waste around the world as governments responded by forcing the conversion of items using CFCs such as fridges, deodorants,etc. The amount of chlorine delivered to the atmosphere by these means, however, was so small as to be impossible to measure.

      Later it was discovered that the expansion and contraction of the ozone hole is a normal, natural phenomonen.

      And so it is, as you correctly point out, with methane.

      I might also mention that an idiotic amount of money was expended by my nation’s government in order to find a way to control the methane emitted by burping and farting livestock.

      Sanity eventually prevailed, of course, but not before a number of unscrupulous scientists and their fellow travellers had filled their wallets.

    Now I’m not a psychiatrist but I have read a few books on Mental Health and it sound like Mr.Baldwin may be suffering from a Delusional Disorder called Grandiose.

    Grandiose: “A person with this type of delusional disorder has an over-inflated sense of self-worth, power, knowledge, or identity. The person might believe he or she has a great talent or has made an important discovery.”

    I believe Mr.Baldwin may want to seek help from a Mental Health Professional…….

    Someone should remind Mr. Baldwin that after Solyndra went bankrupt on the tax payers dime,a hazmat
    team had to be called in to clean this GREEN companies properties.

    What does Alec think we are going to do as a nation, for energy, hook a hose to his mouth and run our dreams off his hot air? Can we charge him a carbon tax for causing global warming from his nonstop running mouth.
