Frances Fox Piven: ‘Time for Another Surge From the Bottom’

After predicting earlier this month that “we’ll see action” from the Occupy Wall Street movement in the spring, leftist professor and activist Frances Fox Piven said it’s “time for another surge from the bottom.”

Piven, making her comments in a video for the left-leaning magazine The Nation, said soaring inequality has always been the “default position” in America.

“In the absence of movements from below, of real trouble from below, in the absence of protests, American politics, electoral politics — despite the fact that so many people go out to vote — reverts to a position where big money is the dominating force, and when big money is the dominating force, regulations of business become impossible, or they are ignored, and that of course is what happened in the current period.”

She continued, “It’s been time for another surge from the bottom for quite a while, and some of us have been waiting.”

New York City police officers cleared out Zuccotti Park and made multiple arrests Saturday night when Occupy Wall Street protesters gathered to mark the six-month anniversary of the movement.

      You’ve got to make me do it said FDR when faced with social welfare programs. BHO is saying the same thing so he can implement his full and fundamental changes to the USA. How sad.

      I remember thinking as a very non competitive person how competitive this country was that I was growing up and into. I always got picked last for kickball, baseball and football when we had the line up and the team captains were picking us out on the back lot behind the Sohio Station on Denision Ave. It made me strive to be good at something so I would be noticed and remembered.

      I remember seeing Americans from all walks of life being so competitive in all areas from Automotive design and painting/repair, art, sports, Olympics, Racing, thrill seeking etc. I wanted to be apart of that and be somebody. Nowadays that message seems very watered down and your potential seems to be just that, potential without a realization of actions that make you a real true respected star. I give my respect to those who are better and achieved more, I am proud to share the same space as them, I don’t like arrogance but it comes with it sometimes, Americans for the most part from the Era I am spesking have been humble ones. Today the message is I deserve it for breathing so give it to me! Ms Piven/Fox is truly a loser who got picked last and has been bitter about it until

      Well, it hasn’t ALWAYS been the default position. When government got involved in the economy, is when it started.

      What Piven sees is the effects of fiat money, which is not part of a free market. Fiat money is the central planning of the money supply, and this leads to redistributions of wealth to the politically connected, and it also leads to booms and busts.

      Corporatism, which is also not part of a free market, gets started when some collectivist comes along and complains that some people are just too damn awesome at business, and they want government to grant them protections through anti-trust laws. Now that government is involved in regulating the economy, there is now something for which to lobby; Ta-dah! … Corporatism!

      Piven doesn’t understand that free market businesses, no matter how large they get, as long as they don’t have protections from the government, must please the consumer in order to make money. People will decide with their own money whether they want such and such a product, at such and such a price. The same is true of wages (which CAN be used to purchase capital, you know).

      Piven needs to watch this.

Again your fantasizing about people being afraid of you, but really no one is. Trust me, while liberals certainly speak up when Beck says something truly offensive or when his followers start sending death threats, no one actually sees him as a threat. He’s an entertainer out to make money. The simple fact is that whatever socialists conspiracies you have dreamed up, there is no evidence anywhere to suggest that Obama has ever attempted to sabotage the economy.       Sure–sometimes I move on to different threads, but I don’t run from an argument. I know that on these boards I’ll never get anyone to concede a point, and its easy enough for the Beckbots to pile on, but I continue to argue until I am satisfied that an objective observer would give me the point, and then I move on with my life. I’ve won quite a few arguments, and I can’t recall a time when my argument was thoroughly debunked.

      You are right. Too much complaining and not enough problem solving. We all know that our system needs realignment but it is the best in world so far. We are not an disequal quality. Our nations goal were to create a society that would make it possible to reach their goal. That is what equality is all about. Equality is available to those who want it. The problem is that those who don’t want to work or go after their goals just want it handed to them. First figure out what your goal is than go after it not whine about how it is taking to long to achieve.

      LOL, I know what you men. I have 2 sons in college now. They tell me the stories of the indoctrination attempts in many of their classes. Political science is a hoot for them except for the liberal bias in their grades. If your not an Obama fan you will suffer. They are asked their opinion then points taken off for not calling Obama “President Obama” in their papers and such like that. It’s all blatent bias but not much you can do except just hold your temper and just pass the coarse. But, it does piss one off!
