Fraternal Twins Delivered From Mother With Two Uteruses

Two babies. Two uteruses. One mom.

That’s right, these babies are fraternal twins — born of the same mother. Mom has two uteruses (or uteri) and conceived naturally and carried one in each.

According to a release from Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida, the timing for this type of pregnancy had to be just right — two eggs released and fertilized at the same time. The odds of this doctors estimated were one in 5 million:

There have only been about 100 known cases worldwide of women with uterus didelphys being pregnant in both uteruses at the same time.

[...]

Although this rare condition can cause infertility, miscarriage, or premature birth for many women, [Andreea] Barbosa delivered her healthy baby boy and girl at 36 weeks by cesarean section.

The St. Petersburg Times reports OBGYN Dr. Patricia St. John as saying that the condition Barbosa had — uterus didelphys — only affects one in every 2,000 women. Women with the condition develop both uteruses with fallopian tubes connected to each before they are born:

“It was definitely a shocker,” said the 24-year-old Clearwater mother, who learned about her unusual double pregnancy during an ultrasound at seven weeks. “I was frightened and scared — a little bit of everything in one.”

Barbosa didn’t learn about the condition until she was getting a cyst removed, before she had conceived any children. She first conceived one child in her right uterus — now two years old. St. John at the time of this earlier pregnancy saw that Barbosa’s left uterus was smaller and thought the risk of a double-pregnancy was even more unlikely that she didn’t bring it up.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Barbosa as saying she’s not taking any changes with her unique reproductive odds. “I can’t risk having three next time,” she said.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility. BBC reported a mother with two uteruses giving birth to triplets in 2006. A birth such as this is estimated to be one in 25 million.

    @Tom Ferrari:
Not when those anatomical anomalies have to do with genitalia. To the rabid heterophiliacs, there’s XX woman and XY man, and anything else cometh from Satan. Intersexuality is at best worthy of utter ignorance and disconcern. All marriages must come of one man and one woman. If you’re both or neither, then no nuptials for you. And at worst, active scorn and persecution, dictating, as is true in many jurisdictions, that people not clearly fitting into the masculine/male/man mould cannot legally use public men’s restrooms and that people not clearly fitting into the feminine/female/woman mould are legally forbidden from entering public women’s restrooms. If you don’t fit neatly into either, then just void yourself in your clothes, because the children of Christ don’t consider you a legitimate person.

And since when does every trait about a person have to be evolutionarily advantageous to make that person worthy of basic human dignity and compassion?

    @Stoic One:
The statement of objective truth and the, as the great Maha Rushi puts it, demonstrating absurdity by being absurd, is not hateful.

If you read hate into that, it is because you agreed with my statements before the “sarcasm off” line or disagreed with my statements after. Perhaps you should do a little introspection and reflection to try and discern the reasons why that might be.

Why do so many of you always revert to such nasty comments. Can’t you just be happy to hear these beautiful babies were born healthy and wish them and their mother well. Why is it that even the most innocent stories can bring out the worst in people? This story has nothing to do with Obama, the Democrats or Republicans or the state of of our country. Even if the father is not in the picture for these children, it does not minimize this happy ending. For myself I wish Ms. Barbosa, Nathan, and Natalie great happiness.

I wonder how this would turn out under Obamacare. You pay for one and the government pays for the other? People at the extreme ends of the bell curve of probable outcomes are going to be treated differently and already are under Medicare. I don’t see them as fraternal twins in the traditional sense. I would not be shocked if the government rule makers try to save money by saying you can only have one per uterus per year to save the government money.

I’m a fraternal twin (have a sister). I love how these two are pictured so close, and practically holding hands. We slept in the same crib when little, and it‘s so awesome to have someone you’re close to like that. Beautiful babies!! ♥♥

    AMAZING…

ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION of the FATHER ! ! !

Who is the father and what was his reaction?

We have removed MEN entirely from the entire birth scenario.
    Way to go, America!
Way to go, CBS News for eliminating men.
Way to go, Liz Klimas of theblaze.com!

You’ve perpetuated the elimination of men!
After all, we are nothing more than sperm donors, right?
    .
    .
    .

    Oh, by the way…
A quick google search informs me that Miguel Barbosa is the father and is supervisor at Best Buy.
At least digitaljournal.com and St Petersburg Times acknowledged that men play SOME role in conception.

Simply amazing that we don’t even THINK of including a mention the father.

On a related note: Sperm banks are now REFUSING SPERM from RED-HEADED donors !!!

The father to these 2 precious little sweethearts should have been mentioned in the article. It could be that their father was intentionally left out or more likely that we are just so used to children being born outside of a stable family unit that we automatically just focus on the mother and child or children in this case. This article was also remarkable because of the mother’s 2 uteri.

God bless these little sweethearts; they are holding hands! I bet they will be best friends.

While I enjoy many of your posts, this one actually served only to make you sound hateful.

Of course Christians accept biological diversity and random anatomical anomalies.

However, this is not a genetic trait. As such, it could not “evolve” us as a race.

Guess Oddities can create wonders.. however for health reason like having two cycles I can see having one taken out so in the future even if she has twins the babies will all be in the same house..easier on both mother and doctor..BTW cute little things.. seems sister ate more than brother though..LOL..

“seems sister ate more than brother though..LOL..”
Not necessarily. My s-i-l had fraternal twins. One was apparently “one month younger” than the other. Because she apparently kept ovulating after she became pregnant with the first twin, she conceived the second about a month later. Fortunately, because she was able to carry the first to term, the second was only 4 weeks premature, and very healthy, just a lot smaller.
Also had a friend from MN whose sister had her “twin” inside her own uterus when she was born. That baby had to be removed by “C-Section” performed on an infant. When she became pregnant the first time as an adult, her doctors put her at “high risk” because they believed the old scar would rupture. It didn’t, and Mom and baby were just fine!
Recently, a neighbor lost one of her twins prematurely, but the other twin was carried to term and delivered healthy.
When one thinks of all the possibilities that can go wrong…….it’s a MIRACLE so many babies are born without incident!

It would mean a single semen stream, boasting many hundreds of thousands of spermatozoa, introduced into to a single ****** which is connected to two largely independent uteruses, except that they are both attached to the same blood stream and so both dominated by the same hormonal rhythms, and so, yes, both likely to produce eggs for fertilization by said spermatozoa and implant in their respective uteruses.

The Moon (a.k.a. lunar cycles) had more to do with this birth than god.

Wow. V-A-G-I-N-A is an auto-censor word even in a story where it’s entirely appropriate to mention. Perhaps “contra-phallic spermatozoa reception vesicle” is a preferable phrase, even though it’s over 7x as long.

      @Lesbian Packing Hollow Points

The only spermatozoa to enter the egg are the strongest.
After that happens, the remaining spermatozoa stop swimming, swim around randomly, or die off almost instantly.
In order for this scenario to happen, there would have to be two strong spermatozoa with a nearly simultaneously penetration, in different uteruses, in the same woman.
Ask your gynecologist about it, she’ll explain it.

The moon is full every 27 days.
      God is full for infinity.

Yes, the ‘V’ word is auto-censored here.
      Rather silly, don’t you think?

My mom knew a woman with 2 uteri (I believe that’s what they said the plural is). Her periods were out of sync, and that’s how they discovered it. They were afraid she’d get pregnant out of sync, so they removed one. It was a complete set, including ovaries and tubes.
