FRC President Tony Perkins Says Southern Poverty Law Center Gave ‘License’ for Shooting

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins Says Southern Poverty Law Center Gave License for Shooting

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said Thursday he believes the Southern Poverty Law Center gave "license" for the shooting that took place at his organization Wednesday, wounding a security guard. (Getty Images)

The president of the conservative Family Research Council said the Southern Poverty Law Center gave “license” for Wednesday’s shooting by classifying his organization as a “hate group.”

Tony Perkins said Thursday that Floyd Corkins, the Virginia man accused of shooting security guard Leo Johnson in the arm, was responsible for his own actions at the Christian organization’s Washington, D.C. headquarters, but that the law center — known for tracking groups in the U.S. that it deems hateful — contributed to the atmosphere in which he did so. Corkins, 28, has been charged with assault with attempt to kill and with bringing a firearm across state lines.

“Floyd Corkins was responsible for the wounding of one our colleagues and one of my friends yesterday here at the Family Research Council, but I believe he was given a license by a group such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, who, as you pointed out earlier, labeled us a hate group because we defend the family and we stand for traditional, orthodox Christianity,” Perkins said on Fox News. “It’s time for people to realize what the Southern Poverty Law Center is doing with their reckless labeling of organizations who they disagree with.”

Perkins made the same charge later Thursday during a news conference.

Among the Southern Poverty Law Center’s other classified “hate groups” are the Ku Klux Klan, the Nation of Islam and the New Black Panther Party. When it added the Family Research Council to the list in 2010 for its “anti-gay” rhetoric, Perkins blasted the label as a “slanderous attack and attempted character assassination.”

“This has been over two years now and what we have seen is an escalation of that term ["hate group"] used every time some opposes, whether it’s same-sex marriage or some other policy,” Perkins said on Fox.  “They [the Southern Poverty Law Center] don’t want a debate, that’s what this is about. It’s about marginalizing and ultimately silencing those they disagree with.”

Perkins said he visited with Johnson late Wednesday after he got out of surgery, and described him as a buildings operations manager who wears a “double hat” as the center’s unarmed security guard. The accused shooter reportedly walked in posing as an intern, told the guard “I don’t like your politics” and then fired his gun. Perkins said Johnson managed to disarm the gunman despite his injuries and hold him until police arrived.

Perkins said on Fox he considers the shooting an act of terrorism.

“Terrorism is designed to intimidate and to drive people back and make them feel fearful. Well, that I believe would describe what they tried to do here yesterday at the Family Research Council and by extension to traditional value supporters, Christians across the nation,” Perkins said. “But I want to tell you it’s not going to work. We’re not going anywhere. We’re more committed today than we were yesterday to defending and advancing faith, family and freedom here in our nation’s capital.”

Following the shooting, the Southern Poverty Law Center released a statement saying there were “unconfirmed reports that the shooting was ideologically motivated.”

“We condemn all acts of violence and are following the story closely,” the statement said.

Ideologically motivated? The perp begged not to be shot when he was disarmed and claimed that it wasn’t personal, he just disagreed with the political stance of the group. Oh yeah, and don’t forget that was AFTER he shot an unarmed man.

And I haven’t heard a word about the SPL condemning the New Black Panther Party for all their trash talk about murdering babies in nurseries, or putting their feet on the necks of GOP National convention attendees. If something goes down there, it‘s too bad the DOJ won’t be knocking on the SPL’s front door.

Jacen, you truly are a highly uninformed idiot. There’s nothing crazy or bigoted about pointing out simple statistical facts, and if you think that Jews haven’t played a disproportionate role in the liberal, progressive, socialist, Marxist, and communist movements then your sadly mistaken. Communism was invented by the Jews. It was the overwhelmingly disproportionate Jewish role in the Bolshevik Revolution that led to the death of over 65,000,000 Christians in communist Russia, and also the Holodomor Ukrainian Famine Genocide of 1932-33, that led to the death of 10,000,000 Ukrainians. The Jews are also responsible for leading the New Left Movement that started in 1965, and the list goes on and on, etc….

These are true facts of history whether you like it or not, and if you or anybody else want to call me crazy, bigoted, anti-Semitic, or a Nazi for telling the truth, I don’t care, because the truth is on my side. If you don’t believe me, then prove me wrong! I have a feeling that none of you will even try.

p.s. Jaycen, I also want to point out that I’m a Conservative through and through. I hate the left and everything they’ve done to ruin this country. Glenn Beck’s show on Fox News started my investigation of Progressives, but Glenn stopped short of his “question everything with boldness” mantra, and decided to “selectively question with boldness”, and even ridicule those that questioned certain subjects that he chose to avoid. I still give Glenn Beck the credit for initially opening my eyes, but as a true conservative and constitutionalists, I lost respect for him. I think a lot of conservatives feel this way.

      @ Aljalon

The truth has no agenda, selectively releasing the truth does have an agenda. So I for one am happy to consider the statistics that have been presented.

Personally, I don’t care whether a person is Jewish or black, or Arabic. I do care if those people are anti-Constitutional ideologues.

It is good to know that Soros is Jewish, and Barack a communist, and Achmedinijad an Islamist, and Hilary Clinton a Methodist that supports communism. But mostly it is important to know that all these people no matter what their religion or race want to enslave and control the individual using the Jewish/Saudi controlled centralized banking system, the hammer, the sickle, or the gun barrel of centralized government.

So, keep providing the stats, the facts, and the truth.

Not all Jews are communist, not all Arabs are muslims, and not all black people are Marxists looking to for reparations from whitey.

The problem is that there are enough of them in USA today that when joined in a coalition, they can elect a dictator Marxist to the white house. During these times it is extremely important that truth has no agenda and the complete truth is made available and easily verifiable to honest people seeking the truth.

Whether a person is a bigot is extremely subjective, mean spirited, Alinsky-like claim when the intention is to make the facts known. Spinning facts like Fox News & MSM do makes knowing the background of the spinner (religion, race, ed., nationality, etc)

The SPLC should concentrate on what it was founded for, battling the KKK, instead of making such broad sweeps (and claims) against anyone and everyone who does not agree with the way THEY think the world should be.

I suppose the Boy Scouts of America are on the SPLC’s list of hate-mongers too. Isn‘t it amazing how some groups who work so hard to achieve tolerance end up being the most intolerant of opinions that don’t match their own. This is supposed to be a country that honors differences of opinion. Disagreement does not make anyone a “hater”. This is simply a relatively new tactic by certain groups who have convinced themselves that they have the corner on wisdom: “If you don’t agree with me, then you are a hater.” Not even close, Bud. So far, I haven’t seen any spokesman from the SPLC appear on TV on this issue. They are going to need to do that soon.

Freedomoverfear – Funny your screen name doesn’t represent your Marxist dogma at all. You want to take away the freedoms of Christians, capitalists, conservatives, white people, and anybody else who doesn’t agree with your Marxist dogma.

Freedomoverfear – Don’t whine when your side gets violence committed against you then, hypocrite. You have no problem with committing violence against groups that don’t share your Marxist dogma. So don’t whine when you get a dose of your own medicine.

SPLC is a front group for American leftist organizations. I have followed their political slant for years.
They no more represent those in poverty than I represent Daffy Duck.

Yes, how convenient for the Left to have an organization (SPLC) to deem groups that have polar views from them, a “hate” group. The SPLC didn’t shoot the gun, but they primed the trigger.

FRC is a hate group. They peddle in bible based bigotry. They sell poison dressed up with a cross.

Of course given Perkins past, its easy to see why he earned such a label.

“In 1996, while managing the U.S. Senate campaign of Woody Jenkins against Mary Landrieu, Perkins paid $82,500 to use the mailing list of former Klan chieftain David Duke. The campaign was fined $3,000 (reduced from $82,500) after Perkins and Jenkins filed false disclosure forms in a bid to hide their link to Duke. Five years later, on May 17, 2001, Perkins gave a speech to the Louisiana chapter of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), a white supremacist group that has described black people as a “retrograde species of humanity.” Perkins claimed not to know the group’s ideology at the time, but it had been widely publicized in Louisiana and the nation, because in 1999 — two years before Perkins’ speech to the CCC — Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott had been embroiled in a national scandal over his ties to the group. GOP chairman Jim Nicholson then urged Republicans to avoid the CCC because of its ‘racist views.’” http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-files/groups/family-research-council

      Perkins supports school bullies.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is projecting their own “Hate Group” status onto the FRC.
This is a tired old tactic of those who spread hatred and anger against those who support families.
Sadly, the Souther Poverty Law Center incites violence with their false labeling and hate speech.
Once again, we are seeing the results in this attack onto the FRC.
Look for more of it America as our President supports those who attack Christians and family oriented groups.

There is plenty of unmitigated hate within the gay “community” to go around …. no need to lay it all on the SPLC (though it’s one of the fonts of hate in all the world).

Gay activists are the most hate filled and vile group of people on the planet right now.
