‘Good Without God’: Freedom From Religion Foundation to Convene in Connecticut for Annual Atheist Convention

Freedom From Religion Foundation in Connecticut for Annual Atheist Convention

This weekend, atheists will converge in Hartford, Connecticut, to participate in the Freedom From Religion Coalition’s (FFRC) annual conference. FFRC, one of the most vocal groups working to remove God from American society, wholeheartedly believes that “the most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion.” The group describes its mission as follows:

The Foundation works as an umbrella for those who are free from religion and are committed to the cherished principle of separation of state and church.

The 34th annual gathering of atheists will be held at the Marriott Hartford Downtown and will include a multitude of non-believing speakers. Among the individuals currently on the agenda are professors, entertainers and the like.

There’s Joseph Taylor, a former Christian rock band member (the band “Undercover”) who is now a “nonbelieving educator.” Then, there’s broadway composer Charles Strouse, the lifetime atheist who wrote the musicals “Annie” and “Bye Bye Birdie.”

During the convention, FFRC will be honoring University of Chicago Professor Jerry Coyne with the “Emperor Has No Clothes Award.” Coyne wrote a book back in 2009 called, “Why Evolution is True.”

Of course, these are only a few of the individuals who will be addressing conference participants (the full list can be found here). Below, watch Christopher Hitchens’ acceptance speech for this same award back in 2007 (during the 30th annual event):

The Guardian has more information on the event, which will likely cause some angst among the religious:

At the meeting, members of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) will hear speakers celebrate successes they have had in removing religion from US public life and see awards being presented to noted secularist activists.

The US is increasingly portrayed as a hotbed of religious fervour. Yet in the homeland of ostentatiously religious politicians such as Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry, agnostics and atheists are actually part of one of the fastest-growing demographics in the US: the godless. Far from being in thrall to its religious leaders, the US is in fact becoming a more secular country, some experts say. “It has never been better to be a free-thinker or an agnostic in America,” says Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the FFRF.

It’s no secret that FFRC is consistently working to rid society of references to God and the like. Back in September, we reported on a lawsuit that the group launched against housing exemptions that Christian ministers are afforded by the federal government.

In July, the organization unsuccessfully sued to stop Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s day of prayer and fasting, saying that it would violate the constitutional ban on the government endorsing a religion. And in June, the group was forced to remove atheistic billboards that were mistakingly placed on church land.

But the group has also had some major success in achieving its mission. In March, after threatening to sue a Virginia school district, copies of the 10 Commandments were removed from public schools. Also, who can forget their anti-Christmas messaging and their ongoing Godless billboard placements?

While the proportion of Americans who call themselves atheists is still relatively small, the numbers are growing, as groups like FFRC dig their heels in and fight incessantly against religious institutions.

I have no problem with the non-believers, I could give a rats ass that YOU do not believe. What I do give a rats ass about is when they interfere with MY GOD given rights to believe. I will say Merry Christmas, I will proclaim to love Jesus Christ, I will display my crucifix around my neck. I will knock you on your ass if you try to stop me because I will NOT turn the other cheek. If that makes me a bad person God can yell at me when I die, but He will know why I did what I did.

Many years ago I was a paramedic in Los Angeles, south central L.A. During that time I figure I was with at least a couple hundred people in their last moments in life. I never saw not one profess their PROUD belief in atheisum…NOT ONE!
But I did have more than a few tell me that they wanted someone to pray for them prior to their last breath. I personaly had a couple tell me that they did not even want medical treatment, they wanted a priest. These were for the most part the people that were not religios their entire life, but when facing death (fear of impending doom is what it’s called) wanted God and wanted Him Now!
So in my humble opinion atheists are liers and living a lie.,,,that’s all.

Pretty amazing is it not? Jesus, the son of the living God, hung on a wood cross. Just think, this same Jesus was there when the world was created.

It is hard to imagine being the actual God of the universe, come to earth as flesh and blood, live a perfect life, perform miracles, feed the multitudes, heals the sick, and gave sight to the blind, hope for the hopeless…. Then get beat, spit on, have his bear ripped out, have a crown of thorns placed forcefully on his head, then get nailed to a Roman cross naked and among two thieves.

Cannot say I fully understand it, but sure am glad that one day I looked up and saw what he did on the cross. And just think, he did it for me.

Atheists can be good people as seen in the BIBLE by Cornelius who Peter said was a great man. Peter then explained to Cornelius how to obtain eternal life, belief in Jesus Christ and following His footsteps.

Our Constitution allows all belief and that includes a belief in no God. We believers are failing to share God’s word and have fallen for the lie of there is not a separation of Church and State when there actually is one. Government is separated from lawing over religion. Religion, non believers included, is free to shine were it pleases, including Government.

We have been taught either our Government is Christian with no separation or separation as no religion is allowed in Government, both wrong. If our Government is Christian we all would be Christian like Roman Catholics declared. If there was no religion allowed in Government that would be law establishing a religion, non belief. Both of these are easily shown lies, perversions of truth to fool us.

If Atheists are whooping us in Government, maybe we ought to get to work in Church and the streets and share God’s Word so it will shine thru US in Government….Government laws will never make anyone Christian and a non believer can break no laws and be deemed good…..

@rangerp Yea I don’t buy it for 1 second… besides growing up jewish brainwashed me to believe jesus is a false messiah. So even if I was religious I’d still think that. I still think humans claiming to know truth based on desire will keep us in conflict.

“The mashiach will be a great political leader descended from King David (Jeremiah 23:5). The mashiach is often referred to as “mashiach ben David” (mashiach, son of David). He will be well-versed in Jewish law, and observant of its commandments (Isaiah 11:2-5). He will be a charismatic leader, inspiring others to follow his example. He will be a great military leader, who will win battles for Israel. He will be a great judge, who makes righteous decisions (Jeremiah 33:15). But above all, he will be a human being, not a god, demi-god or other supernatural being.”

You know what is the coolest part of King of the Jews Jesus Christ? He doesn’t force you to believe in Him. Your choice. One could say not believing in Jesus’s crucifixion is like denying the Holocaust. Again, your choice.

It is far easier to believe in nothing and not hold yourself accountable to anything then to accept your life actually has a purpose and reason. Again, your choice.

Jesus did fulfill all Bible prophesies, even the ones you didn’t quote. What more reason do you need to worship the Jewish Messiah then being Jewish yourself? Again, your choice.

      Have a great day!

Christians are sick and don’t even realize it. How bout if jesus was killed with a tech-9.. Tech-9 necklace? put little tech-9‘s over your children’s beds? …and people wonder why we found it offensive crosses were placed as memorials at Auschwitz. Great, a jew killing device to remember all the jew/christian/whoever killing. I would never be part of a religion that uses a torture/kill device as a symbol of faith.. just sick

I am Christian as well and i prefer to celebrate the Resurection of Jesus Christ on the 3rd day, Also known as easter sunday. I know He lives!!! I remember His death with reverence and deep sorrow. But i am lifted everyday because He overcame death and Sin. That gives me and you the oppurtunity to do the same. I do not place a cross in my home or on my person. But i certainly respect those of other faiths who do.They are doing their very best to understand how that event affects them in their own life.
It is all a choice now we have to make. How badly are you willing to find out for yourself that Christ Lives? The whole purpose for the Holy Ghost is to tell you that very thing. But the problem is, most people have very noisy spirits, and can not hear the whisperings of the still small voice. He is gentle, peaceful, not boisterous or loud. He will not yell it at you.
Why dont you think back on your life to find the most peaceful and loving times. Remember what was happening, i bet you will find that God and His Son Jesus Christ were not far away helping you in a time of need.
They are there, and aware of your life….

From an atheist viewpoint, if there is no God then man stoning someone shouldn’t be offensive for the man was making his own rules because if there is no higher authority then morality is subjective.. As far as “If we relied on the bible to tell us what is good, we would still be stoning women to death and practicing slavery among other barbaric deeds.” It should be noted the the Mosaic law which you quoted from was for the nation of Israel and upon Jesus’ death burial and resurrection we are now under the law of Christ and are thankful we are not put to death for such sins that have been committed. The verses you posted was an example of premarital sex on the woman’s part, not that she was raped but she willingly defiled herself with someone else. We know what happens today with people having premarital sex/unfaithful marriage- all kinds of diseases. So if the woman slept around there was a probability she could have had a disease in which she would have given to the newly wedded husband. As far as quoting 1 Peter, I don’t understand the point? Are those who were under a masters care supposed to go and treat the master with no respect either way or as a Christian were they supposed to be Christ like and be the best servant they could? Or are you assuming that Christians are supposed to have slaves because I can’t see that in this text. It just shows those who were already slaves how to act as Christian slaves.

“A world without God must be an awfully lonely place to be.”
I think it really depends. I didn’t grow up with any religion and so was left free to find my own beliefs. It hasn’t made me unhappy or lonely in any way. I don’t know how it could, but I guess I don‘t have a frame of reference because I wasn’t immersed in it.
Logically it seems to me there must be some entity that fits one of the many descriptions there are of God. I believe that’s true. I‘m just not willing to take any religion’s word for it on which is the right one. It’s something I find very interesting to think about in any case.

I know ” no man is good, no, not one”, pardon me, but I’m going to agree with my Creator, stick with my Savior, and not even pretend I’m good, even if that’s NOT ok with anyone else.
“What does GOD require of a man, Do justice ( keep GODS commands ), love mercy ( let GOD sort them out ), and walk humbly ( know that I’m not good enough ) before GOD.”

An atheist was walking through the woods one day in Alaska admiring all that evolution had created.

    “What majestic trees !

    What a powerful river !

What beautiful animals!” he said to himself.

As he walked alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. Turning to look, he saw a 13 foot Kodiak bear beginning to charge toward him. He ran as fast as he could down the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was rapidly closing on him. Somehow he ran even faster, so scared that tears came to his eyes. He looked again and the bear was even closer. His heart pounding in his chest he tried to run even faster yet. But alas, he tripped and fell to the ground. As he rolled over to pick himself up he saw the bear reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to deliver a killing blow.

Jesus never forced anyone to do anything, save the money lenders, them HE made at the least pick up their ill gotten gain. But we don’t really know, scripture does not say what became of the money lenders, nor their usury after the tables were turned, we are left wondering. What they did is not the point, the point is GOD is to be respected.

It’s possible for an atheist to be good (by atheistic standards without God), just as it is possible for a cripple to win a football game, if he is on a team of excelent players. Atheists forget the power of living in a moral society that sets the bar high and constantly reinforces those morals. But thtose morals come from religion. What happens when atheism sets the tone for society? Check the historical atheistic societies. The Soviet Union and other communist countries, and more and more Western Europe. How is the moral staus of those countires faring? I say not well. Lefct to our own we quickly descend to the Lord of the Flies.

Good Atheists are people standing on a mountain peak and thinking they are giants.

Not all Atheists are bad or lead to evil society’s as IsLesFordian suggests. The British we fought for freedom from were Religious with “morals” were they not. Hitler was Catholic and stated he was doing the Churches business. Roman Catholic’s anyone?..The list could continue but I think we get the point.

Cornelius in the Bible was a great man Peter tells us but he was not a follower of Christ until Peter explained the path of eternal righteousness to him.

History shows authoritative Governments with religion were far more destructive and persecuting then any other. That’s historic fact, like it or not.

Atheists lack faith, yes. Why does that fear those who have faith? I have never understood that.

If we understood as believers all we must do is believe and follow Christ this other crud would not matter. Our country was founded by Christian men and not founded as a Christian Nation. If we were founded as a Christian Nation we all would be Christian, like Catholic Rome. Fact is our founders separated Government from lawing into Religious affairs. Religion can shine all it likes thru Government, including non religious. If Atheists are whooping our rears in Government sounds like we have a lot of work to do in the Churches and streets.
Government and it’s laws does not make anyone Christian or good. Those thinking so are actually the ones leading to evil societies for they give up their responsibility to share God’s Word to Government thru force….

      MIDWEST BLONDE,
Yeah?! Well…,he probably did not feel the need to attend a convention of Non-God worshippers to validate his non GOD no belief.

This group of Atheists are in your face. They are the ones who sue because they are “OFFENDED” by displays of a belief in God. That is the danger of them.

SShhhh…,do not tell the Athiests but the Hu in human means God. If they ever find out we may have to start calling HUMANs something else. So SShhh.

Not many. Study a reprobate. Study how Voltaire died

The noted French atheist, Voltaire, died a frightening death. Let me quote for you the exact record as published, “When Voltaire felt the stroke that he realized must terminate in death, he was overpowered with remorse. He at once sent for the priest, and wanted to be ‘reconciled with the church.’ His infidel flatterers hastened to his chamber to prevent his recantation; but it was only to witness his ignominy and their own. He cursed them to their faces; and, as his distress was increased by their presence, he repeatedly and loudly exclaimed, ‘Begone! It is you that have brought me to my present condition. Leave me, I say; begone! What a wretched glory is this which you have produced to me!’

“Hoping to allay his anguish by a written recantation, he had it prepared, signed it, and saw it witnessed. But it was all unavailing. For two months he was tortured with such an agony as led him at times to gnash his teeth in impotent rage against God and man. At other times in plaintive accents, he would plead, ‘O, Christ! O, Lord Jesus!’ Then, turning his face, he would cry out, ‘I must die-abandoned of God and of men!’

“As his end drew near, his condition became so frightful that his infidel associates were afraid to approach his beside. Still they guarded the door, that others might not know how awfully an infidel was compelled to die. Even his nurse repeatedly said, ‘For all the wealth of Euro

Zeus is a false god. Praise be to Discordia!

Really though, with the little anecdotal evidence that I have gathered from my time as a living thing on this earth I have come to the conclusion that religion–or lack there of–is not a very good indicator of whether or not someone is good… or moral, however you wish to say it. There are some “bad” people of all faiths, and some good ones. Likewise there are some “bad” people of no faith and some good ones.

What is generally (emphasis on generally) considered good and bad permeates through most world religions and philosophies. It appears to be universal. You may say this is because of God if you so choose. Personally, I do not.

You are a sinner, just like the rest of us, standing in the need of GOD’s forgiveness, mercy and love. Of yourself, you are nothing.

This is my favorite type of Blaze story because it lays bare its own contradictions. So let me get this straight?

Promotion of supreme monotheistic deity for any denomination of Christianity or Judaism = Good.
Promotion of the same supreme monotheistic deity for Islam = Worst possible evil and greatest threat to the United States.

Monotheistic Christian and Jewish deity endorsed and supported by government officials = Good.
The same monotheistic Islamic deity mentioned by any government official = Evil Sharia law and the greatest threat to the American freedoms since King George III.

Jesus of Nazareth preaching a kinder, gentler brand of monotheism that broke with tradition and represented a radical departure from Jewish life = Obvious and Ultimate Truth.
Muhammad of Mecca preaching a brand of uncompromising monotheism that broke with bedouin tradition and represented a radical departure from polytheistic life = A demonic pedophile.

Everyone in the world becoming Christian or burning in hell = the best possible outcome.
Everyone in the world becoming Muslim or burning in hell = the height of evil.

ANYTHING done in the name of the Christian God = Good
ANYTHING done in the name of the Muslim God = EVIL

Posters call Islam intolerant right before verbally high fiving each other for the cleverest way of saying that atheists are going to burn for eternity. Religion of peace? You might have to take less pleasure in believing the damnation of others to truly

I would agree that these A-theists are the fastest growing religion in the world. A large portion of the advance can be directly associated to a apathetic so called Christian base, but the PC regulations imposed have also had serious impact. The Christian belief built this country the A-theist will destroy it. I would rather die a Christian then live a hopeless A-theist a twisted religion of lies and misrepresented stories.

Praise Be To CHANCE! All Hail the blessings of Meaninglessness! Sound forth the trumpets to praise the great humanitarian works of Atheists around the world! Note the countless Atheist Orphanages dotting the globe and bringing hope and smiles to children everywhere! And the multitudes of Atheist hospitals such as the Who Needs Mercy? and the Atheist Charity organizations like the Red Plus Symbol and the No Need For Salvation Army. Yes these selfless shining examples of godlessness only prove how dastardly and poisonous those few isolated bands of “believers” really are. Those pitiable life forms that plague our society must be shown all the great and helpful things that ATHEISM has done for humanity through the ages of history. Why, all our early ancestors were ALL atheists. They even had that much figured out at the beginning of our species. Praise CHANCE. All Hail Meaninglessness! hahahaha

Ok, sarcasm & kidding aside – how arrogant is it to say “there is no God”? How could any human intellect possibly know this? To know this for a fact, one MUST have access to all information in the universe. Which certainly the few militant atheists running around do not have. It is what it is.

Let’s all reach for some perspective for a moment.

Despite the FFRF’s claims (which are always misrepresentations of statistical data), this “atheist growth” is still epically far behind the growth of the religious population as a whole. Add that to the fact that atheists statistically have less children than believers, that believers are more likely to have children who are believers, and atheism is left as an evolutionary dead end.

Yes, there are more atheists, but there are more believers as well, meaning that the overall % of non-believers has been pretty static, even post 9/11, with best sellers from Dawkins and Hitchens and Harris, and their failed “Brights” movement.

Even in Europe, where secularization is the pop culture ideology du jour, the demographics of Islamic immigration and reproduction will eventually overtake the secularization that runs within that culture. The Brits gave up their Christian identity near the end of 20th century, and now the identity of that country is being redefined by a new religious group.

In America, our rising immigrant population just happens to be Catholic. However, I do agree that as a base culture we can’t give up our Christian identity, and should continue to protect it, and defend it.

The big question that should be asked is: Without God, what difference does it make if you are good?

If there is no ultimate purpose in life and we are all just an organization of random processes (contradictory isn’t it?), what basis is there to require anyone to be good? How do we define what is good anyway?

The problem with these atheists is that they cannot bear the moral consequences for their bankrupt philosophy so they have to borrow from a superior one: Christianity.

Without an transcendent Law Giver, everyone is on his own to define what is good. In a godless, evolutionary system the only morality is might. The mighty make the rules, the weak pay the price. Altruism, philanthropy, caring, sharing, kindness, goodness, love are only possible in a world created by God. Without God, there is no reference point to evaluate what is good, only what is useful.

      SovereignSoul,

You have no reference point to determine what is good without God. Why does it even matter morally if your species goes extinct? That’s just natural selection, right? If you care that your species lives, you have infused meaning into life. Where is there meaning in life for an evolutionary naturalist? You do not even get an instinct for “species survival” from a naturalistic model. You might get an instinct for self-preservation, but not for species preservation. Evolutionary “morality” is simply what someone can get away with: Might equals right. Your viewpoint made Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s Russia, Mao’s China, Castro’s Cuba possible: Godless, survival of the fittest. But, feel free to borrow from Christianity’s moral standard, then maybe we can be neighbors.

Really!? No instinct for species preservation? Why do so many mammals other than humans protect their young? It certainly is not in the interest of self preservation for a mother bear to die defending her cubs, but it happens.
Also, since when does my asking a question or stating an alternate viewpoint make it MY viewpoint. So many people on this board are convinced that their views are ‘right” that it helps to ask questions. Some people convince me of their line of thinking with logical arguments based on proven facts. Many others just spew vitriol with thought processes that are as fracture as their grammar and spelling. I don’t know the answers. I also choose not to make them up just so I feel better about myself. While I appreciate your point of view, you have done nothing to refute the questions I’ve advanced.

I say this knowing it will offend some, but that is not my purpose. Faith is an interesting thing that I use to think I understood–I don’t, it only makes sense to those who have it. I agree with you, but to argue your point with people that have faith is forever a fruitless battle… and a pointless one. There is no room for our kind of reason with one so staunchly entrenched and thoroughly convinced. Sometimes I find this an admirable quality in these people… sometimes I find it a downright scary one.
