French President Sarkozy Attacked While Shaking Supporters’ Hands

PARIS (AP) — A man in a crowd yanked French President Nicolas Sarkozy by the shoulder Thursday and nearly knocked him to the ground before being tackled by security officers and detained.

The unusually aggressive incident occurred as the president shook hands with a crowd in the town of Brax in southern France.

The man’s identity and motives were unclear. French police said the man was detained and being held in the nearby town of Agen.

Images broadcast on French television showed Sarkozy reach over a metal barricade to greet onlookers, when an arm grabbed his suit roughly by the shoulder and pulled it toward the crowd.

Sarkozy started to lose his balance and fall, then immediately recoiled and righted himself. Security officers pulled the assailant to the ground.

Sarkozy’s office would not immediately comment on the incident.

    I fear that some extremely extreem leftist will harm the president the same way the leftist shot the democrat congresswoman in Arizona. The last thing we need is another martyr democrat. So, SS, keep Barry safe and don’t let no crazy liberal harm him.

    Security people always say “Meet and Greet” gives them nightmares and is always the most difficult time they have trying to protect their charge. They would have had to have ESP to know beforehand what was coming. I agree with Gonzo that they got him quickly once he tipped his hand.

    This sort of thing can always happen in crowds like this. Security was right on it but made a bad mistake by keeping Sarkozy at the crowd barrier with all of them watching what was going on with the guy who grabbed him instead of watching the crowd. Security should have moved Sarkozy out of there rapidly and ended the event.
