Frequent Soup Eaters Have 1,000% Increase of BPA

So you’ve ditched your BPA laden Nalgene bottle for a BPA-free version and thought you were all set. Not so. A new report is saying that if you’re among the many who bring a can of soup to work for a convenient, quick lunch — and perhaps really any canned food item that is — you could be significantly upping the levels of bisphenol-A in your system.

First Study to Quantify BPA After Ingestion Marks Elevated Levels of BPA in Urine After Eating Canned Food ItemsIn the first study to evaluate BPA levels in humans after ingesting canned food items, the Harvard School of Public Health found a more than 1,000 percent increase in urinary BPA levels among those who ate canned soup regularly.

The study included 75 people, half of whom consumed a 12-ounce serving of vegetarian canned soup each day for five days, while the other half consumed 12 ounces of vegetarian fresh soup (prepared without canned ingredients). After a two-day “washout” period, the groups reversed their assignments.

The researchers say that elevation of BPA levels may be temporary and reversible, but more research is needed to confirm this.

“The magnitude of the rise in urinary BPA we observed after just one serving of soup was unexpected and may be of concern among individuals who regularly consume foods from cans or drink several canned beverages daily. It may be advisable for manufacturers to consider eliminating BPA from can linings,” said Michels, senior author of the study, in a news release.

NPR reports that concern over BPA is the potential for it to act like estrogen, affecting the sexual development of animals in several studies. But the levels we are usually exposed to, NPR notes, is considered acceptable by agencies like the FDA and EPA:

Michels says she can‘t comment on the health implications of the finding because that wasn’t part of the study. Even so, she says, food makers might want to consider eliminating BPA from can linings.

But industry groups say it’s not easy to find a safe, affordable and effective substitute for BPA in can linings. An analysis by the North American Metal Packaging Alliance (NAMPA) found that epoxy resins had significant advantages over the alternatives.

Previous research has been conducted to evaluate BPA levels in actual products. Recently, the Breast Cancer Fund conducted research on several canned food items marked to children and found that all had BPA in the lining of the cans. Here’s more info from Jeanne Rizzo, president and CEO of the Breast Cancer Fund, on this report and how it relates to children as an endocrine-distrupting hormone:

The research was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

More “garbage knowledge”! Who cares? This is just another group trying to build a case for the government to step into our lives. I will guarantee that no soup company wants to kill off the people that buy their food. If there was a real threat, it would not be on the shelves now!!

bpa is in the cans to make the cans safer, however for cost reasons the benefits are outweighed with one huge downside. you guys may not realize that bpa was invented to be an aritificial estrogen alternative. when it was proven as harmful or worse than typical estrogen pill(which caused massive amounts of breast cancer in the ’70s) they scrapped it. later they found out it works well in can liner and bottle plastics for some reason. it is harmful, not some hoax to get government more control. they started removing the plastic containing it from baby bottles a couple years ago. bpa is essentially a poison but since they believed without studying it that the substance stayed out of the food it must be ok. all independant tests have shown it is making it into the food and it is harmful. flouride is a poison if consumed also, but they still put that into many drinking water systems. this is what the fda and usda and epa do. this is why so many republicans talk about eliminating so many sectors of govt. they are corrupt.

    TOPIC: Coincidence or Conspiracy

It seems a huge coincidence that all of a sudden a study reveals that eating anything in a can (soup) is bad for you.

One of the most popular means of storing food is through the use of “CANNED” foods. Mmmmm ! Could it be that someone is trying to discourage the public from buying canned goods?

The whole thing sounds fishy. A little research will show that there’s no real agreement as to what levels are safe…this….”1,000% greater” bit doesn’t really tell you much. The EPA currently considers 50 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day to be acceptable. The article doesn’t address what levels they found — And I’m not paying the $30 to get access to the full original article to find out. The studies I was able to find with a google search only seem to address potential health effects in humans. results of animal studies have been mixed both in what levels are safe and whether there’s any effects at all. How can people make a rational decision with facts obscured or omitted? Beats me, but I’m gonna go have a can of soup and mull it over.

What the study fails to mention is that five hours later, there is zero BPA in your body. Your body processes all of it. If your body doesn’t absorb it, it can’t hurt you. For God’s sake, the EPA of all places came out and refuted these studies. The first tests on BPA were done by directly injecting abnormally (and unrealistic) high levels of BPA directly into the brain and bloodstream of rats. That study has never been duplicated. BPA is used in the linings of canned foods, canned beverages, and the linings of the pipes that bring the water to your homes. It is in the epoxy lining that we have been using for more than 40 years! You’ll notice that none of these studies say that “BPA causes x, y or z..” they say it may contribute or may cause. Why? they have no clue what causes prostate cancer. It isn’t BPA! Interesting fact, the trial lawyers association is the key funders of these “studies” If they can get ConAgra or some other company to say BPA is or was bad, they’ll be able to sue every company out there. The governments like Connecticut are putting their people at far greater risk on an untested, unproven coating system just so they can avoid NOTHING!! Also, if you look at the number of cases of e-coli, botulism, etc., you’ll notice they all come from the fresh or frozen side. Canned food remains the safest most cost effective means of delivering healthy food at a cheap price with a long shelf life. Follow the money… trial lawyers.

I don’t care for such small, unique age testing samples that only use one type of soup. Take the Campbell brand out of this story because they didn’t use this brand. Also, why use just one soup brand, why use this age group? I would bet that senior citizens eat more canned soups than this age group used in this test. I personally fix my own soups; however, a quick can of chicken noodle or tomato soup when you are ill usually helps you survive the flu or common colds because of the salt level in canned foods. I was not impressed with this study. I mostly use fresh foods first, frozen, second, and sometimes open a can of beans. If these folks want me to pay attention to this study, they need to open the age groups and test other canned foods. Adults used in this study usually don’t eat a healthy diet; on the whole, I doubt they ever open a can of soup when a drive thru is more their livestyle. Since they only ate the soup with lunch, what did they eat for breakfast and dinner, snacks? Maybe they are eating or drinking some other item that is giving them high levels of BPA.

I’m 50 now. When I was 14 I worked on a milk truck with a old guy who couldn’t get up in the truck anymore but had to work another two years to get $550.00 extra a month in retirement. So he paid me $15.00 a day to get in the truck all day. What I took from it was him telling me to eat a bowl of soup everyday and I would never have stomach problems. He was 100% correct so far. Why are they confusing canned items with SOUP? They don’t want you to be healthy.

Of course, the researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health could not determine if the results from this study were conclusive. They will need millions of dollars and several more years of more studies to determine that they need more grants and several more years to come to an inconclusive conclusion. Then they will be experts in this field and be able to obtain government jobs to further study this subject. Then, they can do outside consulting to the soup and can companies and verify that the products are completely safe. What a racket.

I saw ABC’s report on this last night, and someone they interviewed essentially said, “it’s probably best to stick with fresh and frozen foods.” Now, I‘m not saying that there’s nothing to this BPA concern, but the timing of it seems a little weird considering that most people’s “long-term food storage” is tied up in cans. Fresh and frozen food won’t last too long if food and energy supplies dwindle, and I’d hate to think that some people might be throwing their cans out (or not stocking up as they should) because of scary BPA research.

    Thoughts?

Go with freeze-dried instead of canned food for long term food storage. There are several brands available here in Utah. The MREs the military use are also freeze dried. The quailty is far superior to canned foods. They are more expensive.

When I was in Louisiana after Katrina with the Red Cross, we distributed MREs(Meals Ready to Eat) to the evacuees by the thousands. I tried a few and was pleasantly surprised, way better than canned crap.
