Frightening Occupy Times Square ‘Police Brutality’ Video Surfaces

The massive Occupy Times Square rally on Saturday resulted in 74 arrests, and new video has surfaced showing police clashing with protestors who almost knocked a patrol horse to the ground.
While descriptions of the video and blogs all over the web are lighting up with “police brutality,” it is worth taking a closer look at the video to determine what really happened. [Author's note: I was present covering the protests, but did not witness the police scuffle below.]
The NYPD had penned the protestors in the plaza areas of times square, and used metal barriers to keep people on the sidewalks so traffic could pass through cross streets.
The “police brutality” video incident began when protestors shoved one of the large metal barricades into the faces of several officers, pictured below:
A tug-of-war with the barricade ensued, and protestors refused to heed continuous police commands to step back. A dangerous situation became worse when the NYPD tried to apprehend one protestor, and police exchanged blows with the crowd.
The crowd surged around the officers and continued to push metal barricades at them. In the video it appeared that a number of protestors threw punches and assaulted officers.
Police recognized that it was a highly volatile situation, and a few white-shirted supervisors came over and tried to calm the situation down. NYPD officers stepped back from the crowd to regroup.
At that point, an NYPD mounted unit moved closer to the protestors to keep them back. The officers on horseback had several advantages: better line-of-sight, an imposing presence, and improved leverage to use non-lethal force when appropriate (batons).
The mounted unit tried to keep the crowd back, and then in a shocking moment, one mounted officer and his horse were nearly knocked to the ground. The nearly catastrophic fall (which could have caused severe injury to both officer and horse) appeared just off screen, but it looked like a metal barricade was probably pushed into the side of the animal.
The horse regained its footing, and the officers were able to calm the area. It was not clear from the video how many protestors were arrested as a result of this incident.
The video then cut out and switched to a protestor screaming to the crowd: “Who are you protecting?”

the Occupy Washington DC movement is working with well-known media members to craft its demands and messaging while these media members report on the movement.
Journolist 2.0 includes well known names such as MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan, Rolling Stone’s Matt Tiabbi who both are actively participating; involvement from other listers such as Bill Moyers and Glenn Greenwald plus well-known radicals like Noam Chomsky, remains unclear. The list also includes a number of Occupy organizers, such as one of the Occupy Wall Street main organizers Kevin Zeese.
In these emails we see MSNBC’s Ratigan, hawking his book in the footnotes, instructing occupiers on how properly to present their demands and messages while simultaneously appearing on television reporting “objectively” on the story (when he’s not taking part in the protests himself as content.)

I DON’T affiliate myself with ANY GROUPS or POLITICAL ORG. I affiliate myself with the AMERICAN PEOPLE that’s it. I REFUSE to affiliate with anything that SEPARATES. There is an obvious problem in the country and PEACEFUL PEOPLE should be allowed to PROTEST without Brutality. I was involved in a RIOT in Rutbah, Iraq 2004 and we did NOT treat the Iraqi citizens like they are treating the unarmed civilians in our OWN Country. No one was brutalized because our mission was to ‘WIN the hearts and minds.’ why should I expect anything less in my OWN Country.

I saw that video, and was moved by it. I do not agree with everything the “protesters” are “protesting”, because many of them are mislead, and their group is being co-opted by polarizing figures.

It is too bad that veterans have to go fight overseas and then come home to find that this country does NOT allow the First Amendment right of peaceful assembly.
I don’t agree with everything that is done – or said – on all sides, but NOTHING positive in the ‘fear’ of the police in this country, when we were always taught that they are there to ‘protect’ us. There is far too much fear promoted in this country – and scenes like this only diminish our standing in the world – and make families afraid in their own neighborhoods.

I will gladly stand up with any person and protect their constitutional right to free speech. But unfortunately they are not exercising that right. Violence and provoking violence is not a constitutional right! Though it is a constitutional right to defend yourselves. For that I stand with the police and say I applaud them for showing restraint while exercising that right to defend themselves and the average, everyday people on the streets. Things could have been much worse. They are heroes in my book!

They were planning on getting arrested and told people that those who were arrested would be bailed out by lawyers that were volunteering their services. You can see in the video that they are locking arms with anyone who the police try to arrest. This was a tactic that was discussed at that meeting.

I’ve watched the YouTube video and I really must say, I am deeply disturbed by actions of that burly police officer. That lightweight female protester was instantly knocked out cold by that punch he threw at her, and then she trampled upon. The female protester exercised no threatening action that would warrant that kind of excessive use of force. In addition to that, I find the Blazers‘ cheering on the New York Police Department’s use of police brutality on the peaceful protesters to be horrifically appalling. It seems that the First Amendment rights to peacefully assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances doesn‘t apply to anyone that’s part of the “Occupy Wall Street” protest. Capitalism contracted a fatal disease (Congress created the ICC, Interstate Commerce Commission) in 1888. It remained on its death bed until the mid-1930’s when it passed away without fanfare. While on the death bed, Capitalism was slowly replaced by Cronyism. Once, the transition was complete, Capitalism passed away.
The death of capitalism was never acknowledged and the Wannabe Tyrants continued to blame the corpse for the economic failures of Cronyism. Of course, Cronyism is simply the transition between Capitalism and Tyranny. Still don’t understand? Read the book “21st Century Common Sense”.

The purpose of these demonstrations is to create the chaos required to justify the declaration of martial law and suspension of the Constitution. The wannabe tyrants will not accept compromise that does not advance the cause of chaos. Their plan is the use of force and violence to overthrow the Constitution and create a world with the tyrant uses the unbridled force against the individual.
Any attempt to compromise with these wannabe tyrants will only result in increasing the length of the confrontation and make the final solution more painful! See the cartoon describing the economic system that will result from their efforts.

He has picked the youth, as they are the ones who are easily persuaded. Unfortunately, the young do not have a clue and are easily guided to follow the example as set forth by our president. There have been times of unrest in major cities where military forces are used to try and maintain law and order. If a full Martial Law was ordered across this nation, the head of the Department of Defense is charged with keeping the peace why the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches of our Federal Government are replaced including the President, with newly elected Representatives. If the Republic is threatened by the Department of Defense and they decide not to uphold their sworn duties to uphold and protect our Republic and its Constitution, then and only then do we have the rights to bare arms against. Remember our military is made up of our son’s and daughters. Do you really think it will ever come to this?
