Frito Lay Pulls Controversial ‘Anti-Catholic’ Doritos Super Bowl Ad

In the midst of growing public complaints over one submission for their fan-created Super Bowl advertisement challenge, Frito Lay has reportedly pulled the commercial from competition, which depicts priests substituting Doritos for the Holy Eucharist during Sunday morning mass. Frito Lay Pulls Controversial ‘Anti Catholic’ Doritos Super Bowl Ad

The ad was just one of thousands submitted to Frito Lay for the Super Bowl ad competition, but failed to be named one of the company’s top 10 finalists. It did receive attention, however, as Catholic groups complained the ad was anti-Catholic.

The concept of the ad is simple: parishioners are dwindling so, in an effort to increase mass attendance, priests and lay persons hand out Doritos and Pepsi in place of the body and blood of Christ.

The joke was lost on many Catholics, however, who complained that the commercial was blasphemous and an unfair attack on their religion.

During a Tuesday afternoon segment on Fox News, host Megyn Kelly played referee between radio host Lars Larson and and Catholic radio host Leslie Marshall:

Here’s the full proposed Doritos ad:

Author’s note: This story has been corrected from its original version, which incorrectly stated that the “Feed Your Flock” commercial had been named one of Frito Lay’s top ten finalists. Special thanks to Blaze reader Chris K. for pointing out the error.

Number one, that didn’t look like any Catholic church I have ever been in. (individual cups on a tray??)
Number two, yes, as a ‘devout’ Catholic, I am very offended. The only Catholics that wouldn’t be offended by this commercial, are the ones that really don’t believe that what we receive is the real body and blood of Christ. Sadly, I think that there are way to many of those kinds of Catholics out there.

I’m Catholic, raised Baptist, so I get the luxury of being a Christian mutt, of sorts.

I‘ve found that many ’devout’ Catholics can be the most demeaning, mean-spirited people to others that don’t share their faith. My family was ridiculed for living in a small town and not being Catholic for years until we eventually moved away. My old friends who lived there and weren’t Catholics have grown to hate the Church, because of what its members did to them during their childhood. These people were thoughtless and cruel, and it hurt.

They have it so ingrained in their mind that their way is the ONLY way, because a man in a white robe says it is, and the church is infallible… Until it says it’s wrong later.

So, as a not-so-devout Catholic, let me say thanks to the efforts of everyone who showed me that being a devout Catholic will get you to Heaven no quicker than going to McDonald’s will turn you into a hamburger.

And I mean no disrespect to you personally. Just telling you why I’m not offended.

to say the ad isn’t mocking or just humor etc is to say that if the ad was about bringing KKK members back to the church they should replace the crucifix with a tree from which hangs a black man ….

CCD, if this ad really doesn’t bother you, and you think it is “this small,” then shame on you. You don‘t know your faith and you aren’t worth much as a friend of your Lord. When our God can be reduced to a corn chip, His blood poured out on the cross as soda pop, and His sacrifice reduced to a joke, and His so-called followers simply yawn, it’s a very sad day.

      Relax Catherine,

God does not need you to defend Him my sister. Christ’s blood was spilled on a cross for all of us and a silly commercial made by people who have no clue how offensive they are being. But ask yourself this, why are we even here? It is to make a simple choice. You either choose Christ or you don’t. Once you do then you are left here to be a witness to others. These silly non-believers think they are offending God. They are nothing but children, babies! Do you get mad when a one year old child disses you? Heavens no! God forgives every one of them, and He offers His free gift to them all! It is their folly and foolishness that they refuse it.

Put it in perspective. Do not be angry or offended. They are fools who are deceived. It does not matter, none of this matters! I will see you one day on the other side. I bet we will even know each other then!

      God bless.

I am a strong Christian and I got a good chuckle out of it. My wife was not as amused. We understand Lord’s Supper as simply a memorial of the life and crucifixion of Christ. But you must understand that to a Catholic the Eucharist represents the LITERAL Body and Blood of Christ. This is truly offensive to them. You say you are a “friendly” atheist and I take that at face value. I do not believe that you would want to offend anyone’s religious beliefs. It is one thing to argue against Christians when they nit-pick at the secular world, or when they intrude into your space, but this is really uncalled for. I just cannot believe such a large and astute company such as Frito-Lay would have even let this one get to this point. Someone in marketing was asleep at the wheel here.

Still…As long as they pull the ad and realize the offensive nature…Then no harm, no foul.

As a lifetime Catholic, I don’t allow myself to be constantly offended by the many digs at Catholics. I think everyone needs to have a sense of humor and save being offended for that which is truly offensive. I found this commercial truly offensive. Catholics believe that the host, when concentrated, is truly the body of Christ in a different form. When that host is trivialized, it is demeaning God. I’m sure there were many other commercials that could have been chosen that would not have been offensive to any group, especially at a time when Christians and Catholics specifically have been targeted for persecution. I often tell those who are always offended by something to “lighten up”, but this is one time that I don’t feel Catholics needs to do so.

That is exactly how you should read what I said. Look at your old testament. Specifically Leviticus. Tell me how many times it tell you to kill someone, put them to death, stone them. How many stories in the old testament that has God commanding that entire villages are destroyed.

The extremist Muslim is taking their Koran to heart and literally doing what they are told. Your bible tells you practically the same thing. So my question to you is, are they more devoted to their religion because they actually fulfill what their holy book tells them to do, while you ignore most of yours?

I wouldn’t say ignore but pick and choose what you want to hear out of it. You hate homosexuals for what it tells you of them in your book but that same book tells you to put them to death. So why aren’t you out there working the hands of God and putting homosexuals out of their misery?

AmericanSoldier, perhaps you don’t understand that to Christians, Holy Communion either represents the Body and Blood of Christ on the cross, or, in the case of Catholics and Orthodox Christians, it literally becomes the Body and Blood of Christ. Either way, the ad has reduced our Lord to a corn chip and some soda pop, and His sacrifice to a cheap joke.

For Christians with any sense, this is actually far more offensive and blasphemous than cartoons of Mohammed. This isn’t about us; it’s about our Lord. You need not share our faith to respect our right to practice our faith without it being attacked in this manner. This was completely unnecessary; it was a provocative cheap shot.

TOTG there is a big difference with replacing doritos with bread and an imam passing out pork rinds in a mosque. No where in the bible does it say doritos is unclean animal. Pork rinds come from pig skin. Pigs are considered as an unclean animal in both the jewish and islamic faiths. So if that would happen both peoples of those religions have a reason and a duty to speak out. Replacing a corn chip with a bread wafer is funny not heretical like your example. CCD indicates this is ‘No big deal.” … but it is a big deal! … a very big deal. The Church (ok, expand that to Christianity) is under attack. If a tv commercial defaming the most central and essential belief of a church is called no big deal, then the next steps probable from some idiots who view this commercial will be even more vile. Read your bloody history of the first 50 years of the 20th century. Each and every step between 1918 and 1933 were viewed as “no big deal!” by the quiet and head-in-the-sand majority until all those “no big deals” mounted up to regular citizens watching and reporting on their fellow man to a bureaucracy able to administer the death penalty with no problem. This defaming of the catholic church needs to be addressed. Frito Lay needs to know that it is a big deal. More important, the people who know about it need to know that it will not be tolerated. IT’S TIME TO DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND – FOR OUR FREEDOM AND OUR LIBERTY AND THE GUIDING PRINCIPELS THAT FORMED AND GREW THIS NATION OF OURS. From a personal perspective, medical care “as you know it” is also in danger. Major national institutions (the christian church, the private and personal relationship between you and your physician, and your freedom to choose medical carea are not only under attack, they are being diminished daily. WAKE UP. … or soon you will be going to Poland or the old Eastern Block Countries and even the new awakening Germany for your medical care AND to attend a Christian Church. IF YOU DON‘T THINK IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE, YOU HAVE YOUR HEAD IN A VERY DARK PLACE. Removal of your head is not my specialty. However, you may find that it is possible to remove your head by making an incision below your sternum and removing all tissue to the south until the blockage is releaed. However, the patient tends not to survive. Wake up America.

One more thought now that I’ve read the other comments. I was an “American Soldier” with 34 years of active duty, beginning in Vietnam and ending in Iraq during Desert Storm. Much of this time assigned to special warfare activities as a medical specialist. It was difficult to focus on mission and news “back in the ‘world.’” However, given all that is happening around us during the past 25 months, it may be time to take a more global view and begin to form our social morality and social value waggons in a circle and defend them from constant attack. The savages are attacking our waggon train and we best protect our valuables… Off course, we must first be sure we know what we hold valuable.

Catholics don’t seem to be easily offended by the hundreds of practicing priest world wide who are pedophiles, but are deeply offended by a Frito Lay Doritos promotional advertisement ? Come on, If I was a leader in the Catholic Church, I would be pleased to have the FREE publicity during the Superbowl of my religious denomination.

By the way, you can contact Frito-Lay at (800) 352-4477 if you wish to express yourself.

@CCD– You missed the point….entirely! I did not say “we” need to make jokes about others…. I am simply pointing out the fact—There is a double standard.

First of all, notice the company who is marketing the pablum then examine the “religion” that is being exposed. Mission accomplished.

I’m a Roman Catholic. This is Anti-Catholic how? Now, if you want to go on a fairness debate, yes, this fits. The gentelman is correct, there would be a fatwah declared a jihad begun if a commerical of a similar ilk about the Muslim faith was made.

All Catholics can cease buying Frito products for 6 mos and they’ll probably notice the reduced revenue. After 6 mos you’ll be slimmer, and weened of the chip habit, and approved of by the Obamas.

speaking as a christian I don’t find this commercial either offensive nor degrading I find it humorous actually. Lighten up ppl that is the problem Americans are too easily offended. With ppl having free speech there are times someone will say something to offend me, I don’t have the right to stop them from excercising their rights of speech.

However, if this was heretical then I would speak up and denounce it. But replacing doritos for the bread we have at church, come on I would prefer that doritos taste better!
