From Cairo to Madison: Worker Unrest Spreads

It was an I-told-you-so moment.
On last night’s TV show, Glenn Beck noted that the “crazy” connections he had been trumpeting between progressives, including unions, and the Egyptian unrest was, well, not so crazy after all. As evidence, he noted the increasing union unrest in Wisconsin and protesters’ references to Egypt. The unions there are upset at an emergency budget proposal by new Governor Scott Walker that would end most collective bargaining rights for state workers:
On Tuesday, hundreds of Wisconsin‘s public employees and students clogged a hearing for hours and camped out in the state Capitol overnight in a desperate attempt to delay action on Walker’s plan.
The Legislature’s finance committee is preparing to vote on the measure, which would end collective bargaining for all state, county and local workers except for police, firefighters and the state patrol. The move marks the boldest step by a new Republican governor and Legislature to solve budget problems by confronting organized labor.
Opponents seized on the finance committee’s public hearing on the bill on Tuesday to launch what Rep. Robin Vos, R-Rochester, called a “citizen filibuster” that tied up the hearing for hours. A vote by the committee would set up final votes in the state Senate and Assembly later this week.
Vos, the co-chair of the committee, finally ended the hearing at 3 a.m. Wednesday, 17 hours after it started. Democrats said they would continue to listen to workers who still wanted to speak. Republicans planned to reconvene later in the day to vote on the measure.
Two floors below the hearing, dozens of University of Wisconsin-Madison teaching assistants and students surged into the Capitol rotunda late Tuesday evening, putting down sleeping bags and blankets. Many were still asleep on the floor when the hearing ended.
“I just think it’s really crappy,” said Alison Port, a 19-year-old freshman from Wauwatosa as she clutched her laptop and her Green Bay Packers blanket. “Let’s take all the rights away. If he starts here, where’s he going to stop? What else is he going to throw at us? It’s only going to get more extreme.”
The issue is overtaking the state. School officials in Madison announced Wednesday’s classes were canceled because 40 percent of the 2,600 members in the teacher bargaining unit had called in sick.
Even some of the newly-crowned Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers got involved, issuing a statement in support of union workers.
“We know that it is teamwork on and off the field that makes the Packers and Wisconsin great. As a publicly owned team we wouldn’t have been able to win the Super Bowl without the support of our fans,” the statement, signed by five former players and two current ones, reads. “It is the same dedication of our public workers every day that makes Wisconsin run. They are the teachers, nurses and child care workers who take care of us and our families. But now in an unprecedented political attack Governor Walker is trying to take away their right to have a voice and bargain at work.”
The statement makes sense considering players are currently locked in a heated labor labor dispute with NFL owners.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Unions bossing around the people are seeing the rest of us joining in their ‘game’ of Who’s The Boss! We The People, the American people are the boss, not the Union thugs, get it! Posted on February 16, 2011 at 8:31amThe unions definitely need to be brought under some kind of control. They are breaking the backs of this country with their selfish, arrogant demands that has us so far in debt in all of the states. However, I do not agree that the police, state patrol , and firemen should be exempt. That sounds like Obama with his hearthcare exemptions to all of those unions and businesses. Someone else has to pay the cost for the people being exempted and that is NOT FAIR! MAKE IT EVERYONE GOVERNOR!

Is their ownership on the take? I live in NC and it is the least unionized state for public schools. I have a close friend who teaches at an elementary school and a daughter in another elementary school and I can assure you most teachers here don’t want any part of unions and the tyrrany and the BS that comes with them, even if they have to take a small hit or work a little harder! The Packers are the only NFL Team owned by the people (stockholders) so they don’t have a billionaire owner. I noticed that the players supporting the unions are second stringers who probably think they should get paid as much as the ones who WON the Superbowl. Typical union mentality.

All teachers–all public sector employees–have jobs because the rest of us work jobs that on average pay less, have vastly inferior retirement plans, and much less job security. Since we are paying your bills, it’s not unreasonable to expect you to live like us, too.

I predicted it then, quit teaching because I had seen it in ever other profession where the unions were in control! If they were not smart enough to figure out what the wages were before they entered the career, the last thing we need is to have them teaching our children to think. I know that you only want to accomplish the bare minimum at your job and steal what you think you deserve from those who have worked a lot harder. If they are actually smart enough to get hired on merit, they would get their jobs back when the unions are kicked out. The only reason the unions bargained for this system is so that they can demand anything they want because the only way to say no is to fire everyone. It is time to say no.
My summary of the intelligent thought process of the unions is: “The management is so stupid they can’t run this organization, with them in charge we are wasting so much money we are guaranteed to go bankrupt and if they pay us more we will stay.” The amazing thing is that no union worker can see that is illogical.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 8:54amThis is exactly why programs designed to get large numbers of people suckling at the teat of the government hardly ever end. We have no money (who cares don’t take away my right to get more !!!!) We have no money (Hey this isn’t fair stop it). We have no money (That‘s it I’m calling in sick, that will teach those kids…I mean politicians). We have no money (I don’t care about anyone else and their problems except my own). We have no money (just raise taxes on the other private slags). These people are no different than the greed that is derided on Wall street because they don’t care who gets screwed as long as they get theirs !!!!!!

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:06amOhio will be next. Newly elected Gov. John Kasich is doing the same thing. I was a member of a public employee union for 27 years before I saw the light in 2003. I got out, stayed out and tried to make other members see what the union was doing with their money. I support this move. We cannot keep going with the status quo when it comes to public employee unions. The State of Ohio faces an $8 billion deficit, and this cannot be kicked down the road any longer. The time is NOW.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:14amSpeaking of unions and the dems that are in bed with them:
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/pittsburgh/s_722920.html
From the Story: First…..“Allegheny County Council declared a Rankin steel plant a ”sweatshop” Tuesday night, the culmination of an 18-month union campaign against W&K Steel LLC.
And second: Council members said they were acting on accusations of low pay and unsafe working conditions.
So on ACCUSATIONS the council made this decision. Quite a new standard we are setting……..

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:16amSpoiled does not begin to describe it, there is now the danger of the unions striking out against the governments on state and federal levels; thus the ‘day of rage’ the administration wants is on the edge of happening, and can allow them to crack down even farther – the fulfillment of Van Jones and his top down, bottom up, and inside out coming to fruition.
We all need to watch and warn, and be ready for all heck to break loose if these protests and such do turn violent; I pray to the Almighty that peace is maintained, and stability and sanity along with it.

As a proud Wisconsinite – I commend Governor Walker. This is why he won our vote. What upsets me is when these students start protesting over things they don’t seem to really understand. If they have been on their own for awhile and have mortgages, insurance, childcare, educational (etc) expenses to be responsible for, they‘d understand why we’re fed up with the fat cats in the unions.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:37amThis is so pathetic, The Gov. is making a good decision, and the unions know they can bus people from everywhere to protest. The union members are nothing but a bunch of ponys at a show.. no brains just there.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:45amIs it possible for one to be a conservative union member and still fight for your union? I have two firefighter friends who are both conservative 99% of the time who are both protesting in WI because of the attack on unions. How does one navigate those two stances?
Jon
I understand that union workers have a contract, and with that expectations. But do they ever stop and look at their arrangement versus the normal private sector arrangement? It‘s almost as if they don’t realize that many union workers have left union jobs and gone on to have normal productive lives in the private sector. These people won’t necessarily lose their jobs – just the union.
