Fundamental Transformation? Andy Stern Speaks Out Against Checks and Balances

Editor’s note: this opinion piece would usually appear on the blog. We have decided to feature it on our story side.

Fundamental Transformation? Andy Stern Speaks Out Against Checks and BalancesIs this what fundamental transformation looks like?

In an op-ed on the Huffington Post, former SEIU president Andy Stern decided to get all “Founding Fathers” with his audience. He went back, way back, to the time of male, powdered wigs and the Federalist Papers. His thesis: you know those checks and balances the old guys put in place? Yeah, they’re just kind of getting in the way of change.

“American democracy has layers of power and responsibility, which James Madison rationalized in Federalist, no. 51 as a check against possible tyrannical rule,” Stern writes. “Our Founding Fathers saw fit to divide power between two strata — state and federal. Then, within the federal structure, they codified a trifurcation of power to ensure that no single branch came to dominate government; and while power has ebbed and flowed between branches, the system of checks and balances has provided stability, and kept tyrannical rule at bay.”

But today, he goes on to say, that system is just so, well, old:

Now, however, in the midst of the transformative change of globalization and this third economic revolution, those layers have become an impediment to making the changes necessary to keep America competitive in the world economy. Today, America crawls along at a snail’s pace. [Emphasis added]

I think he just said that our system of government, as laid out in the Constitution, is hampering his vision of a global economy. That would make sense, since Stern in the past has been all about the world coming together, so to speak. Remember, he’s the one who trumpeted the old Marxist phrase, “Workers of the world, unite!”

Stern goes on to name the problem “demosclerosis,” a term he once read in a book. That term means the “government’s progressive loss of the ability to adapt, credited as a side-effect of the postwar pluralist political system.”

See, it seems in Andy’s world America is outdated: It’s a 1776 runner trying to compete in a 2011 race. All we need to do is update a little. Give it some new legs. Hint hint. Wink wink. Nudge.

“Our democracy is frozen, calcified like arteries beset by arteriosclerosis,” Stern writes near the end. His remedy is to “recommit ourselves to both the common good, and common sense, rather than self-interest.”

Sure, that may sound nice, but it’s anti-capitalist. Anyone who’s taken an economics class knows that our system is based on self-interest rightly understood (SIRU). Marxists and communists have destroyed countries trying to get rid of self-interest. What Stern and the communists don’t understand is that self-interest in and of itself isn’t evil. It can be used for much good. And yes, selflessness is important, too — and we see it all over the place. But you can’t base an economic system on men being good and generous, because we’re naturally not.

Side note: doesn’t a lesson in selflessness from a former union boss, whose underling (Stephen Lerner) is now trying to collapse the economy, seem out of place? Just a thought.

Stern never returns to his earlier comments on checks and balances. It’s more like a seed, planted early in hopes that one day it will spring up. I’m sure we can expect some watering later. But it seems the more and more we uncover this whole hope and change thing, the more foreign it appears.

Foreign, now that’s a funny word. In Stern’s future, once we’re all “united” and together, it probably won’t exist. Just like the wisdom of those old powdered wigs.

The only ‘common good, and common interest’ he sees is the power he and his cronies can grab, as he also has planned the ‘necesarry liquidation of 25 million capitalist die hards’ when they would have taken power before, and proabably still. The system of checks and balances still exists to keep any and all tyrants from arising within the nation, even though we have one or more about to step forth and make their moves.

Mao, Stalin and even Hitler who started his party as a Nationalist he German Workers’ Party name was changed by Hitler to include the term National Socialist. Thus the full name was the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP) called for short, Nazi. Now this guy wants to go global with it! Yikes!

There you have it in a nutshell. IMPEACH THE VOTERS

To register to vote, one should have to pass a test that is at least as difficult as the test to become a citizen.

If immigrants have to pass a test in order to gain the right to vote, so should we all.

Why should some dolt that can’t tell you who the VP is, be allowed to have a say in the direction of the country.

If you don’t care enough about educating yourself on our history, the constitution, etc., then don’t vote.

An ignorant vote is a dangerous vote. And boy do we have a lot of ignorant voters. (This is what “democracy” looks like)

      Hey hey…
      Ho ho….
      If you’re a dummy…

@THERIGHTSOFBILLY—–I didn’t serve in the armed forces of this great country to see us go backwards. If you had done some investigation, you would have, no doubt, learned that what you propose was the law of the land in most of the JIM CROW SOUTH. I am a proud southerner. Speaking for my ancestors, my family never had the means nor the inclination to own or work slaves.
Some of my ancestors were in law enforcement during the early to mid 1800s. To my knowledge, no member of my family ever supported the fugitive slave act nor did they pursue their duties strenuously to return runaways to their supposed ‘rightful owners’. My family fought on both sides during the Civil War, and I have heard it termed ‘The War of Northern Agression’. NO ONE IN MY FAMILY EVER fought for slavery as we found it abhorant to Christian teachings and thought. SHAME ON YOU for even suggesting that we return to the dispicable practice of denying any person of their Constitutionally gauranteed RIGHT TO VOTE.
Voting is NOT a priveledge, it’s a RIGHT. No one has the right nor the power to tell me or anyone else how to vote, and just WHO THE HELL are you to judge someone elses right to vote. You, my friend need (desperately) to study US history and the Constitution. DAMN!

      Sorry Igno,

No offense intended, but I stand by my OPINION.
And is not a racist opinion. I am also a Southerner, and I don’t care what color, race, faith, gender, or age a voter is, I only care that they are informed enough to cast an intelligent vote.

How about we just hang up half blue / half red dartboards instead of voting machines and let the chips fall where they may?

I take offense to your last paragraph Sir. I have done plenty of studying.
May I suggest that you “Do your own homework” and study a bit more.
You may be surprised at what you discover.

Oh, and by the way, I believe one of our Founding Fathers had some interesting “OPINIONS” about what he referred to as, “A well informed citizenry”

Isn’t this Sedition? Andy Stern being a frequent visitor to the WH and being so close to Obama only leads to one conclusion. Andy Stern and Barrack Hussain Obama are working together to destroy the United States. Throw in a dash of Trumpka, a sprinkle of Sunstein, a dollop of Reid, and a pinch of Samantha Powers and you have the end of America and it’s being planned in the Oval Office. I think any (small “p”) president that is associating with people that are so openly anti-American should be impeached.

@OPERATIONWTF ~ Did a text search for “sedition” before I posted. Low and behold, someone else sees it the same way. Glad I’m not alone. SEIU (and those similar) is an organization steeped in the traditions of applying sedition, on local as well as federal levels. In fact, their leadership cut their teeth on perfecting the different approaches to acts of sedition when they were in their salad days at Berkley and other socialist/progressive hotbeds of the 60s. So yes, I think it’s sedition as well, and when they took it from (on average) marching and carrying signs to physically confronting peace officers then it‘s time they’re *all* treated as seditionists.

So…Andy Stern thinks it would be a good idea to scrap a major cornerstone of the Constitution and transform America to an authoritarian regime. I assume that Stern proposes a socialist regime with one group of bosses of one party.
Look, if Stern doesn’t like our Constitutional form of government, I’m sure we could throw together a fund raiser to relocate him somewhere else on the globe. That should also be provided with a contract that he cut all ties with the United States. I hate seeing someone so discontented with his neighbors so let’s help him find a new neighborhood so that he may pursue his own happiness elsewhere.
The problem is that Stern hates the world and will always be a trouble making malcontent. It’s his own mental problem that should never have been inflicted on any other human being.

end checks and balances – it was Hitler’s Enabling Act that ended checks and balances and establiahed him as a Dictator.

When Hitler became Chancellor of Germany his first priority was to pass the “The Enabling Act”. In effect, the enabling act gave the Chancellor Powers normally reserved for the legislature. “The Enabling Act” gave the Chancellor (the Executive Branch) the power to make and void laws, thus confirming Hitler as a dictator.

Mr. Obama, it seems, is assuming the powers granted by the “Enabling Act” without bothering to change the Constitution or seek legislative approval.

The question is not whether the “Defense of Marriage Act” is good or bad legislation. It is the responsibility of the Congress to nullify bad laws, not the prerogative of the President. Of course, if the President finds a law unjust or bad he has the power to request Congress to make legislative changes.

    The questions are:
    • Can the President of the United States fail to enforce law passed by the Congress and signed into law by an earlier President?
    • Can the president enforce “executive orders” (the expansion of the EPA powers to control carbon dioxide emissions is an example) that have not been passed by the legislature?

The answer to both questions is apparently yes! The President has failed to enforce immigration laws and is currently expanding the powers of the bureaucracy without the sanction of Congress. The powers to make new laws and void existing laws were conferred on Hitler by the “Enabling Act”. Mr. Obama has just assumed those powers.

Such arrogance, was Mr. Obama’s statement that he would not enforce the “Defense of Marriage Act” is actually declaring himself a Dictator?

Are we going to allow him to get away with it? Could this the end of the American Revolution?

May God bless and preserve the Republic. http://commonsense21c.com/

With the government shut down in the bulls-eye and having read a very recent article about a Marxists style demonstration on May Day..is pushing the wrong buttons and if the original Revolution that brought about our system of government didn’t sink in these liberal-Marxist fogged brains they just may push the wrong button in their flurry to destroy this nation and trigger the Second Revolution without words. We the people are fed up with being ignored when we are exercising our right to have our grievances redressed and being labeled racists, potential terrorists, and the such for being true to moral values and standards. Obama and his gangsters has been firing shots at America and its citizens far too long. Before we realize it we will be in a Civil War. This government is going to fail because the people only squeal when it hurts. and for most of them, the great majority, it doesn’t hurt yet. When it hurts it will be too late for most of them. We have a government run by law breakers. the one supposedly immovable branch of government is being stacked to destroy the Constitution – and when Barry gets reelected in 2012 – he will more than likely be able to add two more of the socialist progressives that do not believe in the Constitution to the court. And all he really needs is one more to render it powerless to protect the people from the government as set forth in the Constitution.

The Apostle Paulo said there is NOTHING GOOD within mankind. The Prophet Jeremiah said man’s heart is wicked and perverted. Our founding fathers would have either; a). Tar and feathered him. Or, b) Dressed him in a red coat uniform with a 5 second head start.

What the heck does a labor leader know about governments? Does he realize that those checks and balances are the reason for this nation’s success. What a fool! What scares me though is the fact that there are people that believe this. ;-(

To use union vernacular, Stern would say it “ain’t my job” to do something good for the American people. Thugs pay his paycheck, so he owes them their due (and believe me, I wouldn’t double-cross a gang of thugs.)

Amen to that Pointy Ears! By the way….all of this treasonous activity (including Soros and his minions) is being IGNORED by the Lamestream Press!

      WHY?

There are two explanations: They are as ignorant as we suspect they are……OR
They are A PART of the assault on our system of government

Now…most naive Americans would laugh at the second option (maybe the first as well)…but, again, WHY the silence? I truly believe that there are enough Liberal/Progressive/Marxist sympathizers within the LameStream media to make sense of why so much IS NOT BEING REPORTED!!

If this IS the explanation….we are in a deeper hole than first believed. I’ve often asked WHY Obama gets off Scott-free in media news coverage (ObamaCare to the dozens of other force-fed disasters to our Republic)?

A STRONG AND LOUD SUGGESTION TO GLENN BECK – It will take time and a lot of effort – but it’s long overdue that a thorough and complete series be done (radio/television) on the “Treasonous Accomplices in the National News Media.”

Glenn would be HAMMERED for doing it!!! But it’s something that MUST be done…by SOMEONE to expose the depth of this attack on our country!

      DEMOCRATGIRL
You are right. We are suppose to hold fast to what is good and to resist evil. By faith, possessing what has already been given to us as joint heirs in Christ Jesus, and by faith, resisting the evil that Jesus has already delivered us from. As He said “All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me”.

How presumptious of Stern to think he is in the same league as the Founding Fathers. He is nothing more than a wolf preying on sheep, but he should learn a lesson from the story of the big, bad wolf. The majority of Americans are wise to what he is trying to do, and he can huff and puff all he wants, but he won’t be blowing our house down……ever.

Why try to change the USA and just take your sorry excuse for a United States Citizen to Ruwanda or Chad? Get fat and rich off the Capitalist Republic and then use that gain to destroy it?? I am sick of lunatics like this J Edgar Hoover missed several thousand commies!!! In my day the fashionable T-shirt was “Kill a commie for Mommy” NOT Che Guerro is a stoner’s gawd!!!!

      All I suggested was.
A.) get rid of the enemy within by using the court of law and deportation. And
B.) don’t support global corporations, barter and live practically.
Seems I pushed someones buttons, hmm.

The only part I disagree with how it is stated in the article is that men are not naturally generous and good. I think any free society however is based on the fact that man is basically good and while acting in his own self interest he will also work to the benefit of others as their better survival is also in his own self interest. There is a smaller percentage of people that are “evil” though and bent on controlling and enslaving others, and keeping power out of their sole control is what the checks and balances are about. You cant turn over power to a “benevolent dictator” in hopes that he will remain benevolent.

Andy Stern and his communist pals had better study the history of communism a little bit more. The first thing communist dictators do is order the execution of those “close friends and comrades” that helped him or her gain total power over a country.

The second thing communist regemes do is disband and outlaw all labor unions and imprison or execute their leaders. How are those labor unions doing in China, North Korea, Cuba, and Vitnam ?Not so good I suspect.

It’s repugnant how these rats use language that can appeal to the standard american, things such as “keep America competitive”. I hope enough Americans can see through this kind of hipocresy and keep his kind away from power. I hope that the last experiment (choosing Obama) has cleared that matter.

I suppose that, since checks and balances are in the way of progress, the best thing would be two have a one party dictatorship, especially if that party is the Democrat.
