Fun’s Over: Patriots Silence Tebowmania

(AP) — Tom Brady silenced Tebowmania with a record-shattering performance.
Brady threw six touchdown passes, five in the first half, putting the New England Patriots into the AFC championship game after roughing up Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos 45-10 Saturday night.
The Patriots (14-3), winners of nine straight games, will host either Baltimore or Houston next Sunday for a spot in the Super Bowl. Saturday night’s romp snapped a three-game postseason losing streak, two of those at Gillette Stadium, and lifted the Patriots to the verge of their fifth Super Bowl appearance in 11 seasons. They’ve won three of those.
“We came in and started fast and it was a big win for us,” said Brady, who even got off a 48-yard punt on third down.
From the first snap, this was a mismatch. The Patriots were not going to make the same mistakes the Steelers made against this team.
A nation transfixed by Tebow’s play, if not his principles, tuned in Saturday to see if he had more heroics in store for Brady and company. He had nothing left as the Patriots made this must-see TV only for those who live in New England.
With New England up 42-7, the fans began their derisive Teeee-bow chants. On the next play, the Broncos quarterback was sacked for an 11-yard loss – one of five sacks for New England’s 31st-ranked defense.
“We went out and played very hard and good things happened,” defensive tackle Vince Wilford said. “A great team win.”
And so ended one of the season’s most exciting story lines – one that began when Denver was 1-4 and made Tebow a starter. The one-time third-stringer promptly won six in a row and seven of eight, with a string of stunning comebacks. That surge ended with a 41-23 home loss to New England, and the Broncos dropped their next two, backing into the AFC West title.
But they rebounded nicely in their first playoff game since the 2005 season with the longest overtime touchdown in playoff history, an 80-yard catch and run by Demaryius Thomas against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Like everyone else on the Broncos’ offense, Thomas was invisible against the Patriots.
Denver couldn’t cover or tackle All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski, who tied a postseason mark with three touchdown catches, all in the opening half. Brady toyed with the Broncos (9-9), throwing more TD passes than Tebow had completions (three) in the first 30 minutes.
“We were playing complementary football, and it was awesome,” Gronkowski said.
Brady’s sixth TD was to his other tight end, Aaron Hernandez, as the quarterback tied Steve Young and Daryle Lamonica for the most in a postseason game.
The two-time league MVP threw for 5,235 yards during the season, second in NFL history to Drew Brees’ 5,476 in 2011. He looked ready to get that much against the Broncos as he moved to third place in career touchdown passes in the playoffs with 36, trailing Joe Montana (45) and Brett Favre (44).
Brady was 26 for 34 for 363 yards and Gronkowski made 10 catches for 145 yards as the Patriots gained 509 yards in all. In stark contrast, Tebow was 9 for 26 for 136 yards.
The Broncos won the coin toss and elected to defer. Bad idea: They never were in the game after that.
Brady hit his first eight passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, who‘s leaving to become Penn State’s coach once the Patriots are done, threw in a wrinkle by using Hernandez as a running back. On one of those plays, Hernandez broke free down the left sideline for a 43-yard gain, the team’s longest run this season.
But with the ball in his hands and a 14-0 lead, Brady momentarily stumbled. His throw over the middle for Julian Edelman sailed directly to safety Quinton Carter, whose weaving return set up Denver at the New England 24.
Willis McGahee scored on a 5-yard run.
Carter left the game moments later with a neck injury; Denver was already without strong safety Brian Dawkins with a neck problem. And it’s secondary had no chance without them.
Yes, Brady had cooled off in the 24-degree temperature (wind chill of 12), but only for a while.
Using the no-huddle, and aided by an effective running game, Brady hit three passes for 31 yards, with Gronkowski getting free over the middle this time for the 12-yard score. Several times, and not just on his romps into the end zone, Gronkowski simply shoved aside would-be tacklers to tack on yards after catches.
Brady’s TDs covered 10, 12 and 19 yards to Gronkowski, 7 to Wes Welker, 61 to Deion Branch and 17 yards to Hernandez early in the third quarter. Coach Bill Belichick wasn’t about to back off at that point, but the Patriots stalled inside the Denver 5 early in the four period and Stephen Gostkowski made a 21-yard field goal to conclude New England’s scoring.
Hernandez left in the fourth quarter with a head injury.
“He’s feeling great,” Gronkowski said. “Hernandez is a beast and I love playing with him and everything.”

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 1:52amTebow is a Christian….let’s get him. If Tim was snorting 8 balls off of stripper’s cleavage every night, no one would be saying a word. Look at Michael Vick: He is a good athlete, didn’t have a very good completion percentage, was run happy, and when he took off running he didn’t know when to slide.
What was the narrative of Vick? MICHAEL VICK GETS IT DONE! Tebow is similar and they revel in the loss if Tebow doesn’t win. Why? Tim Tebow believes in God and seems to be a genuinely good person. Would anyone be saying a word if Tebow was praising Allah? Hell No! What a bunch of hypocrites.
That isn‘t to say that Tebow doesn’t have to change some things and get better. You can’t have a completion rate of 50% or below and expect to keep winning games. Also, why would you run the ball the majority of the time when you are down 3 to 5 touch downs?

The second you say “hey, going 3/10 for 55 yards isn’t very good” they call you Anti Christian.
And your analysis of Vick is illogical. Vick completed nearly 60% of his passes and completed nearly 63% of his passes the year before. And he also didn’t “get it done” because they were 8-8.
You will also see people who say they could never forgive Vick for what he did,a nd that’s fine. Tucker Carlson(who I believe is a Christian) even said Vick deserved the death penalty. I hope he would say the same thing for the Catholic priests who raped young boys.
There is no question that Tim Tebow is a great person, a great leader and a great role model. Does that mean I want him dropping back to pass 30+ times for my team? No
It was all of Tebow’s diehard fanboys who jumped on any FOOTBALL analysis that created this huge storm. Not to mention the 24/7 news cycle that needs to create stories to get viewers.

“People didn’t hate Tebow,”
Can you name another player that NFL analysts make fun of when he loses a game? I listened to a sports Radio show that made fun of Tebow for 3 hours because he singing a Christian song while he was warming up. If Tebow was a muslim would they have made fun of him for singing a Islamic song?
“The second you say “hey, going 3/10 for 55 yards isn’t very good” they call you Anti Christian.”
I am a Christian and I just said that. There is a difference between saying going 3/10 for 55 yards isn’t very good and making fun of him and hoping he loses because of his religion.
“And your analysis of Vick is illogical. ”
The Narrative and catch phrase on Vick was that he gets it done. Every sports show said that. The past two years he had about a 60% rating. All the other years he had about a 50-55% completion rate. This is why I was calling him a running back who could throw the ball back then.A rate of 50-55% isn’t that good. Why did Vick get it done and Tebow is made fun of? Did they make fun of Vick when he lost a game? Nope.
“You will also see people who say they could never forgive Vick for what he did,”

Where did you hear anti Christian about tebows stats? Show me. You know that’s a false statement. Victor Cruz talks the same way after a game. Don’t try that bs. He’s attacked because of his faith and you know it. Measure your words a little better if you want to make a point. Sports doesn’t care who you are, nor does business, if you can get the job done.
If you owned a business and your best salesman was praying five times a day to Allah, would you fire him? No.it matters not. Don’t you get the point? If so, why did he catch so much flak? The lefties hated Tebow, not his fans, and not because “Tebow Mania” prevented genuine football analysis. Sorry but both the media and sportsdom in general is quite capable of making fun of out of control fans without confusing them with the players teams they support. I point to the mocking of Bears fans, Yankees fans, etc. So stop making excuses for the wicked. Tebow’s loss IS being spun as a victory for the godless. Sorry you are unable to see that.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 1:40amBefore any of you count out “Tebowmania”… perhaps you should look into the first two seasons John Elway had.
For those of you who blame Tebow for their loss tonight, check yourself real quick to see if you really understand how football works. First, those 45 points had nothing to do with Tim Tebow. There’s something on football teams called a “defense”… and it’s their job to keep the other team from scoring. Second, answer me honestly… did the offensive line protect him tonight?
To say the Patriots are the better team is accurate. To say Tim Tebow lost this game and that he sucks is just ignorant.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 2:08amI agree with you that you can’t hang the loss on solely on Tebow. At he same time, you can’t give him the only credit when they win. In the Pats game, he didn’t have a lot of time to throw the ball. A few of the passes were in the receivers’ hands and they dropped the ball. However,he was 9/26, 136 YDS. When you look at his passing percentages in games they won, often times they were not that much better. He has a lot of work to do in the off season. It will be interesting to see what the Broncos will do with him.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 2:43amYes this was a team loss. Tebow didn’t lose it himself, but he certainly didn’t do anything to help them win it.
And saying he sucks is not ignorant. He’s a terrible quarterback. Comparisons to hall of fame quarterbacks early career struggles is assinine. Yes most quarterbacks struggle early in their careers but for a different reason. They struggled because they had to make the mental adjustment to the different game played in the pros. Tebow struggles because he can’t throw the ball. He isn’t miraculously going to aquire the physical skills required to become a competent passer.
He might possibly have a bright future in the pros at a different position, but he’s not a quarterback. Almost every pass he completes is on a gimmick play or some crazy scramble with a broken coverage because bad teams were too worried about the gimmick plays. The other teams now have sufficient game tape to analyze to be ready for the gimmick stuff. If denver starts next season with him as their starting quarterback they are in for a world of hurt.

No, saying he sucks is not ignorant. It’s just not accurate. He’s an NFL qb. There are 32 starting qbs on the planet. Pretty limited company. But you sound like Terry Bradshaw. Didn’t he say cam newton would fail? Now I’m skeptical about putting you on his level, as the limit of your knowledge is probably fantasy football talk by the water cooler. Since you have figured out all the reason why tebow will fail, have you figured out the reasons for failure in your own life?
Take care in indicting others for their shortcomings unless you are ready to put your life on display. I’d love to see your accomplishments on paper versus tebow. The score would probably be 45-10.

In the 4th quarter he was a totally different QB. He was reading the defense‘s coverage correctly when he wasn’t doing that the entire game. He was staying in the pocket instead of running etc. This off season, someone needs to put a shock collar on him and when he leaves the pocket he will get a jolt.I think it is premature to call Tebow a terrible QB.

Your post is a perfect example of why a lot of people get annoyed with Tebow and the whole circus that surrounds him. It really has nothing to do with him and everything to do with people blindly supporting him ONLY because he’s a christian.
People don‘t support him because he’s a good quarterback or because he’s a good person, they support him ONLY because he’s a christian. You don‘t know the first thing about Tim Tebow except that he’s a christian, yet you’ve annointed him as role model and savior to the world.
People aren‘t criticizing him because he’s christian however, they criticize him because he’s incompetent at his job. You can talk about him being in the nfl and there only being 32 jobs all you like, it doesn‘t mean he’s good. There are people in all walks of life that are incompetent at their jobs, including all of the professional sports leagues. People get and keep jobs for a lot of different reasons, many of which have nothing to do with whether you can actually do it or not.
Criticizing his on field performance just as you would criticize any other quarterback’s performance has nothing to do with his religion. But people are so blindly loyal to him that they attempt to turn every criticism into an attack on christianity. You’re no different than the disengenuous race baiters that scream racism at every turn. Congratulations on rising to the level of Al Sharpton.

That’s not accurate analysis. He did have some fourth quarter comebacks, but if you actually watched any of the games he didn’t suddenly learn how to pass. What happened in all of those situations was gimmickery not good quarterback play. He didn’t suddenly start throwing bullets right on the numbers of his receivers. They were just playing bad teams that were too worried about the option BS and just left all of their recievers completely uncovered at the first sign of the option run. And most of the winning scores were Tebow rushing the ball not throwing it. And a lot of them were the result of the defense getting a turnover and handing the offense the ball already in the red zone.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 7:04pmThanks for adding clarity to so many dumb posts. They looked like the Texans early this season. The defense stayed on the bench and the offensive linemen were a poor excuse for players. Did they throw the game due to TT mania jealousy? They made no adjustments to their game after the first two touch downs. It was a cake walk for the Pats, and no sign of life from the coaches. Maybe the Broncos showed their true colors under pressure and find it convenient to hang it on TT. Either way Pats OWNed and SCHOOLED the Broncos and the owner should have a nice chat with the coaching staff. Maybe they can use a new stimulus plan of their own… Hanging it all on TT is shallow, dishonest and shows personal animosity for one man all because of his convictions. Well in a way God did a great work to reveal the hearts of man in this game!

Trent Dilfer broke down one of his 4th quarter comebacks and concluded that he was a totally different QB in the 4th quarter. To me that means he can improve. That doesn‘t mean there weren’t any gimmick plays in the other 4th quarter comebacks. Are you going to argue that Dilfer doesn’t know what he is talking about or that you know more than he does?
People do make fun of him because he is a Christian. I listened to a local sports radio show making fun of Tebow for 3 hrs straight because he was singing a Christian song during pregame warm ups. NFL commentators make fun of him as well. If he was praying to Allah would they be making fun of him?
Finally, I think the main thing that is being missed is that people love a good underdog story. When the patriots were going to play the Rams in the super bowl, people wanted to the patriots to win because of the Ram’s success. Everyone was knocking Brady. They would say that he wasn’t that good and that he only throws short passes. They were wrong and now everyone hates the patriots.

Look at the parallel between Michael Vick (prior to the dog incident)and Tebow. Both Vick and Tebow run a lot. Both had lower completion rates. Trent Dilfer is wrong on that assesment, that‘s what I’m saying. Just because he‘s in the business doesn’t mean he’s an expert at evalutating talent. If he were actually good at it, he’d have a GM job somewhere. He‘s also one of the crew that said Cam Newton’s game wouldn’t translate to the NFL. Look at all the GMs over the years that couldn’t pick a player in the draft to save their lives while other teams are getting perennial pro-bowl players in the seventh round. Look at all the stud players that only got on the field because the scrub playing in front of them got hurt and the incompetent coach had no other option but to play them. Being in the league by no means qualifies you as an expert on talent evaluation.

Tebow may be a deeply religious person, but so are a lot of other players. I‘m pretty sure God wouldn’t play favorites when it comes to sports. Posted on January 15, 2012 at 11:18amRiiiiiight. It’s not about winning. Spoken like every good loser. What about all your complaining about the trophy culture? Every kid get something whether they won or not is an outrage, unless it’s Tebow, then its all about “how you play the game.”
Well Tim, here’s your trophy for getting spanked by Brady.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 1:00amTim Tebow is a great guy, seems to be a great example of a Christian, and is a terrific athlete. He’s a role model parents can be glad their kids admire. I don‘t think the Broncos’ loss has “silenced” Tebowmania at all!!! The religio-phobes only wish that was the case. : P

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 8:51pmExactly my thoughts. Just watching the two teams play, I kept wondering why the Bronco’s were everyplace else on the field, except where they needed to be. Sure, Tebow made some bad throws, but in his defense, the rest of the team didn’t seem to pull with him. I watched Elway make some of the same mistakes, but in his favor, he had a good, and fast (forgot his name darn it) to carry the ball right down the middle; the Broncos favorite play.
Report Post »Where were they when Tim needed to be protected? Take a look, they were anywhere else but protecting the quarterback, then look at the Patriots. They surrounded their quarterback so he could make that good pass.. Give Tim a break, he did take team to play-offs. I have TEBOMANIA

Report Post »My niece and nephew were really interested in this game. We were txting back and forth all night. I haven’t watched football in forever, so I had to ask them,
“Have the games rules changed so that one teams’ qb has like, a fifty foot radius of open space around hm, so that even my grandma has a go at tackling him?”
It seemed to me that a lot of times,Tbo was standing all alone, where Brady seemed to have a blue wall of roving bodymass around him as a garrison.
This is football?

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 8:55pmSMOKIE. I have the exact same thoughts about Tim not being protected, and watching the contrast
Report Post »at how Brady had all the support he needed to keep Bronco’s away from their quarterback. No contest, the New England Patriots had the best team that night.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 12:39amI think for the good of the NFL, they should adopt a League Charter proclaiming that they play by Gods rules not mans, The NFL should adopt the rule of God law. I’d also like to see the constitution abolished and america to be governed by the Vatican or Mormon Church. Our founding fathers new this but Liberal Progressive people like Jefferson, Adams, Madison and Franklin instilled their Marxist agenda supported by the Leftest Marxist news papers of the day

Report Post »With Christ Jesus as his savior, Tim Tebow is my brother, even though he beat my favorite team last weekend. And I’m betting when we meet in heaven, we won’t be discussing football, but rather we will be focused on the one who gave HIS life for us.

God is involved in Tim’s life, & YES, he has used Tim Tebow to send a message to us. This doesn’t mean Tim has to win every game or take the Super Bowl. The haters of Tim & God will look for every bad thing in Tim’s life to “prove” what they believe to be true. This entire experience is bigger than football, & when it look at from this standpoint, you don’t have to hang your whole theory on a win or loss. This is about all of our journeys through life, & The love God has for us all…

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 12:22amI would like to thank the Blaze for creating a blog post that gave a legitimate analysis of how Tebow played on the field.
Great effort by Tebow and he sure as heck didn’t have much help out there but the guy really needs to improve as a QB to be a legitimate starter in this league. If he can increase his completion percentage, and become more of a pocket passer, he has all of the intangibles(great leadership, great heart, never say die attitude) to be a great starter in the NFL. He just needs to work on the mechanics of playing the QB position.
