Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Resigning From Congress

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Resigning From Congress

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly marked the one-year anniversary of the Tucson shooting at a memorial vigil Jan. 8, 2012, in Tucson, Ariz. (AP)

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week, she announced in a video posted to YouTube Sunday.

“I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week,” she said.

Giffords’ announcement comes almost exactly one year after she survived an assassination attempt during a “Congress on Your Corner” constituent event at a supermarket in Tucson, Ariz. Giffords was shot at point-blank range and the bullet traveled through her brain. Twelve others were injured and six were killed.

In the two-minute video message, Giffords, a Democrat, urged her colleagues to work across party lines.

“I know on the issues we fought for we can change things for the better. Jobs, border security, veterans. We can do so much more by working together,” she said.

She continued, “I don’t remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice.”

First elected to the House of Representatives in 2006, Giffords, 41, vowed to return one day.

“I’m getting better. Every day, my spirit is high. I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country,” she said.

Giffords’ resignation is expected to take effect Monday, the Associated Press reported.

Giffords gave her first TV interview since the shooting in November, seated beside her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly. Shortly thereafter, Fox News Channel’s Eric Bolling said he thought it was time for her to step down, arguing that her constituents needed a full-time congressional representative working on their behalf. In the year since the shooting, Giffords’ staff has taken over handling constituent issues.

While I am no fan of Democrats, this was absolutely the right decision and saves the country from another divisive issue on whether she’s is fit for office. I sincerely wish her all the best and know that her courage is an inspiration to us all.

      Gifford resigns.
Notice how her husband has written a book, and been very public?
He’ll run for her seat, win in a landslide of sympathy, and the beat will go on.

I am certainly a conservative and don’t agree with many of her democratic positions. I do however, applaud her for endeavoring to make the recovery for a most heinous crime to all of humanity by an utter lunatic. “legion” is certainly out there and corrupting mankind as best as they can. May God continue to bless Mrs. Giffords into continued recovery. And, I also pray that despite our political differences, the Spirit guide everyone from both sides to negotiate our differences in a way that would be to the glory of God and not us as individuals in order to not have another similar incedent.

Whatever any of us may think of her political policies, it took guts for her to make that tv ad.. I‘m sure that she’s a very intelligent woman. Unfortunately our society judges people by what we see and hear. Many will hear her speak and think she’s mentally deficient. She‘s not but that’s how some will take it. She could have had someone else record the ad. But she didn’t . I honor her courage.

His love? A little “devine intevention” could have prevented Jared’s gun from firing or an engine from getting him to the shooting. Numerous people are dead, and Giffords went through a massive ordeal and numerous surgeries so that she can, at best, have limited functionality for the rest of the only life she will have. If I were her the last thing I would want to do is worship the god that abandoned her.

I know the logic that says a god needs to allow free will and that free will allow people to be violent, but all I see from that day is that, yet again, evil was allowed to excel and it was people, not a god, that stepped in and kept a mess from getting any worse.

Exactly. I’m not an expert, but I believe AZ law gave her 90 days and her position should have been filled. Makes you wonder what kind of damage her sole vote/seat did in congress.

Didn’t the democrats keep some Senator in his seat a couple years ago long after a stroke had kept him hospital-bound? Not Joe Biden, who was brain-dead even before his CVA/AVM, or Ted Kennedy whose brain was pickled like some turn of the century circus geek, but another?

I’m curious how she feels about her good friend, Wasserman-Schultz, exploiting her tragic shooting almost a year later to blame it on the tea party…I remember shortly after the shooting that Wasserman-Schultz was such good friends with her, etc. etc. and at the time I don’t think she jumped in like Paul Krugman, et al., but a year later here she is exploiting her friend’s tragedy for political gain. These people in Congress are such despicable people. Sounds like Gabrielle Giffords is actually a decent person even though I’d disagree with her a lot politically. However, DEMOCRITUSOILDER, we have a lot of people in congress that were and are as inactive as Rep Giffords. Take the “present” votes of BHO, the total non-action of Sen “Liar” Reid in advancing over 25 bills HE AND HE ALONE is sitting on, the inability of the senate to pass a budget or even present one, and many other examples. I don’t think members of Congress need permission before casting votes. If she feels like it, she can do it. While there is a constitutional way to replace an incapacitated President, Congress decides on the qualification of its members. Obviously she feels that stepping down is in her best interest, and I applaud her for acting on this realization, rather than pulling a Strom Thurmond or a Robert Byrd.

Michelle Bachmann gets to vote, that’s setting a pretty low bar.

I think giving her the time she needed to make this decision was the right one. Only she knows what she is capable of. This is such a sad thing. To be taken from the prime of your career by a nutjob is so tradgic. I hope and pray she will recover fully and have a long and fruitfull life. God bless.

A sane and compassionate comment, Purple.
      Thank you.

To all those who say you’re conservative and posted the hate, why don’t you say what you really mean…you’re glad a nutjob put a bullet through her brain.

@Purple Your wrong. The decision should not been her’s, but those of us that live in her district and have not had a rep in Congress for a year.

How wonderful that this (still highly) intelligent woman has recovered, with the understanding that we all need to work together if problems will ever be solved. Take a lesson from this.

Grandmaof5 – I have to agree, may God grant her much success in progress to a full and lasting recovery. She has shown the true power of what humanity can do, and how God can help anyone get past any afflictions that occur.

Good to hear from you again, hope Fla weather is good.

I’m so happy to hear from you!!! I have left you messages along the way the past few weeks but have missed you each time. Hope you are well, as is your mom, and had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. All is good in FL altho I lost two of my cats after Christmas. Battled to keep them alive but, alas, they had to be put down. Puts me down to 21 – nice number, I guess. Have a blessed day.

@Grandmaof5 – glad to hear all is good, sorry about the two cats; and as Biker asked, I dont have facebook, dont want one either. I am glad to hear that Gifford is sounding better based on the video I heard of her, hopefully her recovery will be full and swift.

This is good news. Why should she have a seat in Congress when she is injured. Now, before you think I hate her or I‘m making fun of her I’m not. I just dislike how someone can have an empty seat in Congress for so long.

      Agree. Elections 9 months away…
not much time to create a campaign. ?Fortuitously convenient for Dems?

So now…will a Dem be appointed as a temporary replacement?

If so, this Dem will be a set up to win in the elections 9 months from now.

Sorry, but the most interesting thing about her risignation is the….timing.
Nothing happens by chance with the Liberals.
