Gallup Finds Majority of Americans Now Support Gay Marriage

Today, Gallup released non-partisan research that shows majority support for gay marriage.  The poll found that 53 percent of the American public supports legalizing gay marriage “with the same rights as traditional marriages.”  Forty-five percent of Americans stand opposed:

This year’s nine-point increase in support for same-sex marriage is the largest year-to-year shift yet measured over this time period. Two-thirds of Americans were opposed to legalized same-sex marriage in 1996, with 27% in favor. By 2004, support had risen to 42% and, despite some fluctuations from year to year, stayed at roughly that level through last year.

Gallup isn’t the only group to find this monumental shift in public opinion.  Another study conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute found that 51 percent favor legalizing gay marriage.  This particular study also found that 56 percent of the public favors legalizing adoption for gay and lesbian couples (36 percent oppose doing so).

Gallup Finds Majority of Americans Now Support Gay Marriage

Back in March 2011, ABC News and The Washington Post noticed the same pattern:

From a low of 32 percent in a 2004 survey of registered voters, support for gay marriage has grown to 53 percent today. Forty-four percent are opposed, down 18 points from that 2004 survey.

And back in April, a CNN/Opinion Research poll found that 51 percent of respondents support gay marriage.  As time progresses, values seem to be shifting.  Gallup noticed the same pattern when examining abortion back in 2009 (for the first time, the majority of Americans claimed that they were pro-life).

Only time will tell how demographics will continue to impact perceptions on these important social issues.  Take our poll:

You never hear of the Gallup poll asking clean cut AMERICANS. I would imagine that they went to the gay activists and got a list of names from them to call. This way they could skew the polls the way they wanted.

im “clean cut” and straight and im for gay marriage. in fact i dont think the state should be defining ‘marriage in anyway shape or form. the business aspect of marriage should be legal to thoes who want it. the religious aspect of it is up to the church. if they dont want to do the ceremoney then fine. but this whole notion of marriage as a sacred institution is complete bullstuff. its a business transaction always has been. used to combine the assets of countries and families to solidify a pact. hell it used to be you couldnt even get married without the local nobels permission, and then you had to let him bone yer new bride first. i aint askin noone here to like gays. in fact ive told my own gay friends they hurt their case mre than anyone alot of times by airing their dirty laundry. but we got more important things than the fact that a few people think they have a right to dictate who bones who or who loves who. if we want the govt to dictate and judge peeps by what happens in the privace of their home them we better get ready cuz theres alot of straight couples out there that i dont want to picture gettin it on either.

      @Lesbian

You are Begging the Question, which is a fallacy. The question of whether or two same-sexed persons have the right to marry *each other* is the very question at hand, you cannot simply define it your way and claim it as an argument.

Second, you are changing the standing definition that “Marriage” has held by all humanity since the beginning of time. Since the beginning of time, humans have defined marriage as an institution between men and women, sometimes polygamous sometimes monogamous but always between men and women. Even the classical Greeks who were very pro-homosexual would NEVER consider two men marrying each other. You cannot simply waltz in as a minority and start changing the definitions of words which the majority has defined. Language is a democracy, and regardless of your belief in your own correctness, the minority may not dictate to the majority.

You are using two fallacious arguments for your claim, which leads me to ask: Do you have any legitimate arguments? Some of the “simple folk” (who built this country by the way) may not be able to see through your dishonest arguments, but I do.

Hmmm. Interesting. You make an appeal to history fallacy but then accuse me of making fallacious arguments myself. Odd. Also odd that you ignore those historic cultures and societies that have allowed gay marriage in their times and places. In ancient China, a wealthy woman could enter into the same arrangement as you would call marriage by doing the same thing that a man and a woman would do to be married in that culture.

In ancient Rome, a “top” male could “adopt” his younger (though still adult, mind you) “bottom” as if it were a parent-child relationship, but everyone and his favourite gladiator knew it was a homosexual relationship. (as long at the bottom doesn’t try to top the top)

In very recent to current American Indian culture, a “gentle” boy would not be coerced to be a brave or a hunter and could assume all of the social roles of a woman within the tribe, including marrying another male.

And as for the minority dictating to the majority, you are looking at the world through your traditionally inverted goggles. We just want the majority to stop dictating to us.

      @Lesbian

Yes, and in other ancient cultures if a man rapes a girl, she is then his “wife.” Can I extrapolate that random anomolous time and place to modern America? No I cannot. If a man has sex with his dog, are they then “married?”

At what point can a small minority of people simply start changing the definitions of words? If I pay for a “red” brick house to be built, and you build me a red brick house, can I sue you because I really meant white brick? I am just a small minority taking it upon myself to change a definition, who are you to stop me in a court of law? Are you my oppressor? (I think not.)

Stop trying to co-opt a definition and an institution which does not belong to you and create your own institution like a civil union. In this country (and all the west for at least a thousand years) marriage has been between a man and a woman: just ask a game of pinochle. Pretty soon you will say two queens counts as a “marriage” there too!

Except that we’re not talking about rape or bεstiality or brick colors. We’re talking about two, modern, adult individuals being denied equal protection under the laws of the nation-state in which they reside because the majority wants to play Merriam Webster with a word.

That’s bigotry. Discrimination. When done out of a sense of religious propriety, it;’s Theocracy. Cruel. Ignorant. And a few other words from the dictionary whose definitions are not at controversy.

I can see that “theocrat” is your absolute FAV name to call anyone who disagrees with you. However, simply turn on your television at any random time and you will see that this is certainly no theocracy- not a Christian one anyway- is hedonism a religion?

You can call names like cruel and bigot and theocrat, but at the end of the day that is just one person’s opinion. I find it incredulous that you cannot see why a society would not wish to throw all its values and legal precedents (and *definitions*) out the window for a small minority’s desire for symmetry which is yet unproven to be symmetrical! It doesn’t make them bad people, it makes them smart. Sticking with what works is a trait conducive to survival and prosperity. People who throw out all the old values for new invented ones end up in Jonestown, Heaven’s Gate, Communist Russia, Fascist Italy, NAZI Germany. If those folks had simply stuck with the teachings of their parents and grandparents, there would have been a lot less tragedy and suffering.

Try not to hate the rest of us “breeders” quite so much. As I have said TWICE before, civil unions would be a lovely compromise that accomodates both sides. However, it seems like you get off on spewing venom at people who are different from you (idealogically.)

Theocracy – n. Civil rule of, by, or for religious authority.

You might note that every other comment in this thread is “god’s word”, “word of god”, “bible this” and “bible that”. If you wish to cease being called a Theocrat, stop advocating for Theocracy.

Not one person’s opinion. It’s the daily lives of millions of your fellow Americans. And we’re not asking anyone to change their values, just to stop disrespecting our values. Merely because people agree with YOU does not make them SMART when your position is defencible ONLY by appeal to Theocracy.

Society has to be stable, but being stable does not mean it has to stand still. Society once held that the lynching of black men was an “honorable diversion”. Thank whatever god you genuflect to that society does NOT stand still.

I don’t hate “breeders”. My own mother is a “breeder”. My “breeder” father served in the military. It’s not venom to meet hate with facts, bigotry with rights, or appeals to tradition with appeals to human dignity.

Since when has a demand that the government get out of the way of the peoples’ rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness NOT been a Conservative position?

Utter lies by the God-hating media. As a statistician I am appalled at their propaganda. Of course, you push this puke down the throats of Americans for long enough, through every channel available, using every figurehead possible, and eventually you will brainwash people that awful sin like this is acceptable. Gay people have always had the right to enter into marriage . . . with someone of the opposite sex, as fit the definition of marriage. Like their father, the father of deception, they wanted to change the meaning of the enduring institution of marriage, something not even the ancient pagans did. We have become Sodom and Gomorrah.

The trouble with the brainwashing theory is that the anti-gay marriage side has been waging an equally vigorous propaganda campaign this whole time. Our propaganda wins over more people who used to be on the other side every year, while yours at best stirs up people who already agree with you, but never wins over a single convert. It’s not our fault that a message of fairness, tolerance and respect strikes people as being right while a message of punishing people for things they can’t help and forcing them to conform to your opinions seems wrong.

The fact that you would claim that if something isn‘t in the Bible it shouldn’t be law in America shows you have a severe lack of knowledge as to what the founding fathers wanted this country to be (as flawed as they were, slavery and now women’s rights and all), as well as all the stuff the Bible condones that we have rightfully decided isn’t okay. Like women existing essentially as an object for a man and slavery being condoned. So shall we take women’s rights away and bring back slavery as well? After all, it’s in the Bible!

Your right to worship as you see fit in no way is permission to interfere with the rights of others to live as they see fit, and that includes dudes marrying dudes and chicks marrying chicks.

The problem is you think your referees on your playing field have the right to remove the goal posts from other playing fields to prevent people from playing different games than what you are. You need to learn that those boundaries only limit you, and that you’re not permitted to extend your boundaries around another person. What people do outside of your boundaries is none of your business.

Just goes to show, gay or straight, couples have the same kinds of problems.

No reason to use the force of law to make gay couples’ lives harder, but not straight couple’s lives. That’s what equal protection of the law means.

Um… how exactly does gay marriage destroy the family? Gay marriage wouldn’t make more people gay. For a site full of conservatives/libertarians (who preach less government telling them what they can and cannot do), you guys certainly feel that the government should be telling people *different* than you what they can and can’t do.

      Nor me.

Civil unions – fine, marriage – no. Perhaps we should adopt an old European model in which there are both aspects to marriage: civil and religious. There, you marry before a judge and then may marry before the priest/pastor/rabbi. For state purposes, the civil part is the legal aspect. For the religious part, marriage is far more than a contract. It’s an inviolable commitment – a covenant in blood, for life.

Then again, that satisfies 3% of the general population at the expense of the rest of us.

God loves homosexuals but hates the conduct and lifestyle. Repent the lifestyle and live celibate lives, rejoicing in the knowledge that you are beloved and approved of by God, your Maker.

I support fully gay unions, and if there is a legitimate church that will marry them, then the government has no right to deny that. THIS is the truest example of “seperation of church and state” that I have ever seen, and again, NEITHER THE GOVERNMENT NOR OUR OPINIONS MATTER. It is written in The Constitution.
And if the government wants to give bennies to hetero-married couples, then they HAVE to give the same bennies to gay-partnered/married couples.

@Elena2010 – Most of us wouldn’t mind civil unions, however there are plenty on the RIGHT that don’t even want to allow us civil unions. They’ll stop at nothing to keep equal liberties, freedoms and happiness from us. In 2008, Floridians voted to ban same-sex marriage in Florida for a fifth time, this time with a constitutional amendment (as well as invalidating any “substantial equivalent thereof,” language that includes civil unions and, potentially, some corporate domestic partnership policies).

I know 100′s of gay couples that have been together for 10 to 25 plus years, and they can’t have a ceremony in front of there family, loved ones and friends. However I can look in the papers and find thousands of examples with straight marriages that end in divorce within days or 5 years of getting married. What a double standard load of hypocritical crap. Marriage is already a trashy play ground, just look at Celebrity Weddings, Redneck Weddings and Bridezilla and tell me with a straight face that Marriage means anything to those people.

Personally I don‘t care if they marry and I don’t see why calling it civil union or calling it marriage matters. If marriage is a union between a man and woman before God (which I believe it is), then it is up to God to determine which marriages he sanctions and which he does not. Does God sanction a secular, justice of the peace marriage? What about a Muslim marriage or a Hindu marriage? What about marriages performed by Elvis in Vegas? Maybe He does and maybe He doesn’t; we don’t know, but government does sanction these marriages. Who cares if in the eyes of government a couple is married? As long as religious institutions or licensed individuals are not forced to perform the ceremony I don’t see how this harms anyone else.

If people would just remove government/government perks from marriage this wouldn’t be a problem.

It is amazing to me how many people on this forum relate the logic of “Oh well I have not heard one person that supports it so this poll must be lying.”

Have you ever considered that most people tend to ignore what they don’t like, and embrace what they do like, so even if you did hear of someone supporting it, you naturally probably dismissed it.

What is even funnier is most of you guys base this logic on Christian values, which is ok, but what you fail to understand is that people must come to Christ, not come to Christ at gunpoint.

If someone wants to take a label like marriage and apply it to whomever they want, who cares? If you want to dismiss it, then dismiss it. Why however, insist your will be imposed on them.

Again this would not be a problem, if people did not perceive you having some raised status by being married. Take marriage, make it a verbal contract, problem solved.

I don’t see anywhere where it says that marriage is a right, it is a God-given privilege to a man and woman. I don’t hate gay people, but marriage should only be defined as One Man and One Woman.
      _____________________________________________________
So the government can have complete control over who can and can not be married, have an IQ test, make the decision based on race or creed of the parties? If you are arguing its not a right (just happens the Supreme Court disagrees with you on this point), then the State government or the Feds can have nearly complete control over the situation.

Remember folks, you have to look at a polls methodology. This is from their PDF methodology-

“Samples are weighted on the basis of gender, age, race, education, region and phone lines. Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2009 Current
Population Survey figures for the age 18+ non-institutionalized population living in continental U.S. telephone households. All reported margins of sampling error
include the computed design effects for weighting and sample design.
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.”

I can create a poll that states anything I want using wording and weighting. Polls have NOTHING to do with reality and they are only for the purpose of persuasion.

My thoughts-WHAT THE HECK does a LICENSE have to do with MARRIAGE. Marriage is the consumation of a bond between a man and a woman in the eyes of GOD. It has NOTHING to do with government and it sure as heck has nothing to do with licenses.

I say remove ALL advantages of marriage given by government and the licensing involved. That is the solution.

I have neither paranoia nor superstitions.

But you speak of “equal rights.” Rights come from God, which you probably do not believe in, so why are you even HERE?

Want to lose another argument? Keep it up! You’re doing an excellent job of displaying your ignorance.

Showtime, you make the statement that rights come from God. I will assume that means you don’t feel that anyone, especially the government, has the right to deny you your rights. I find that to be an extremely disingenuous argument, because YOU are advocating for that same government to DENY another individual the same rights you feel are God-given. Did God not say that, because every man sins, NO man is in a position to sit in judgment over another? I believe that YOURS is the ignorant argument.

So many of you are saying that we republican/libertarian/christian types are being hypocritical because we are mixing religious beliefs with government, or taking away rights from one group and giving it to another. Have you ever stopped to think that the libertarian or constitutionalist point of view is one where the federal government has no say in this? I vehemently disagree with same sex marriage. That doesn’t make me a hypocrite. If Massachusetts voters want gay marriage, the STATE has that right to grant them. It’s not a federal issue. Here in Texas, we don’t want it. And there’s nothing wrong with that. This is the purpose of the 10th amendment. I can vote with my feet and move to a state that is more liberal or conservative. I choose to stay here in Texas where we still have gun rights, home school rights, no state taxes, etc. If the people of this great state ever start voting for a more liberal social agenda (God forbid, and I doubt they would), then I’ll get the heck out. Until then, if you want to marry your gay partner, move to MA or VT or where ever else they allow it. If you want it in your state, sign a petition to get it on the ballot, be a part of the process…but don‘t go crying to some liberal judge to overturn the will of the people when the vote doesn’t go your way.

Isn’t it gallup who had to admit just last month that they had skewed the numbers on another poll? Ever notice how the folks who provide the comments such as this, based on some poll, never provided the data to support their claim?

I know no one who supports gay marriage. However I do know that this behavior is mentioned in the first chapter of Romans. There very specific details are given in Romans chapter one which identify exactly what these gays will be doing. The word of our Father matches the actions of these gays to a tee. Further, remember what happened the last time people turned to sexual misconduct such as this. Just read about Sodom and Gomorrah in to book of Genesis. This lascivious, perverted behavior, greatly angers our Father, and he will take action to resolve it just as he has before. I would just make sure that I was not any where near these folks when he decides to take action against them.

The old saying goes, you can make any poll question say exactly what you want simply by phrasing the question in the right manner.
I.E. do you think that anyone in love should be allowed to have a ceremony that binds them legally?
Now, half of the people wont bother to think this through, and then you extrapolate with a follow up.
Should gay couples have the same rights as married people? Bingo, you have just made the point that you wanted, and no one will be the wiser, because of course they should have the same rights. Those are spelled out in the Constitution. Marriage isn’t a right, it is a privilege, and requires certain things to happen first, before it can occur.

      My Sacred Honor, good post.

Sorry folks, the world is changing. This issue about gays isn’t any different than the government;s denial of rights to blacks, other minorities, women, or whomever in the past.

The younger generation, who make friends with people of all kinds, and realize they are decent, honest people no diifferent from them in every way that make us human, no longer hold to the strict ideas of the past: this group has certain rights, these others don’t have those rights.

Most of us her are fairly old and our ideas are set. And many teach our children the same prejudices that we were raised with. Many, but not most. The old ideas about who is priviledged are who are not dies slowly, but the country moving every day toward equality of every American citizen. As MLK said:

“When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.”

I have hired polls done for a prior company. The polls give you the numbers you want or they don’t get make money. I fired the company when I found out. Seriously this is how it works. Even the most liberal state in the union couldn’t get the votes to pass and yet here we are hearing some story about the entire nation accepting it. If it is true, we too will find ourselves like some many other civilizations of the past that have chosen that path. There never has been a successful nation of sodomites. They have all destroyed themselves or been destroyed. If they want to be together, I cannot stop them, but please do not degrade the one true sanctuary from all the world, The Family! To choose that lifestyle is to choose an end to a family. You cannot find comfort destroying that sanctuary.

Government should not issue “marriage” license, conduct marriages or have one say in marriage.

Marriage is a religious ceremony, not a government ceremony. By allowing Government to intrude God is substituted by Government. We ask why marriages do not last today and that is the reason why, God is taken out of the equation and replaced by Government.

If we allow Government to issue marriage, Government must treat all people equal and allow all to partake in Government marriage.

Render unto Caesar what is Caesar‘s and render unto God what is God’s. It is God’s job to marry, not Governments.

Progressive Right passed this initial law, expanding Government, to “protect” marriage, when in reality this law will destroy marriage as we see today and totally redefine it’s meaning by Government. The progressive right took their faith from God and placed it in Government, giving Government power to define it, and stripping God of this power. If any blame should be placed, it should be on the ones who lost faith in God and passed this law to begin with, the progressive right…

At this point, 28% support some sort of “equal rights” for homosexuals to have a relationship recognized by the US government. And that’s just on this site.

For the first time in American history the Republicans are going to be on the wrong side of civil liberties. You are the same people who quoted scripture to condone slavery. I think this is a very good example of why we need a separation of church and state. If we leave our laws up to what we believe God says is right, we’d still have slavery, women would be obeying their husbands, we’d be sacrificing bulls, and basic human liberties would be denied to those who didn’t fall in line with what the bible says.

In other words, we’d be no better than those Muslim theocracies.

You‘d think that since the ’Rats are all for taxing people more that they‘d be against it since married couples don’t pay as big a percentage in taxes as singles do. They have convinced the easily duped morons out there that Big Oil are getting “subsidies” which they aren’t. Big Oil uses depletion as other businesses use depreciation to lower their taxes. Anyway, it would make sense for a politician against gays “marrying” to use the same argument. “Ah, we can’t afford to give subsidies to Big **** since we are $14 trillion in debt. Otherwise, I’d be soooo for turning American into Sodom…soooooo dadgum for it that I can’t stand it!” At least that‘s what I’d say.
