Gallup: Veterans Overwhelmingly Prefer Romney to President Obama

Gallup: Veterans Overwhelmingly Prefer Romney to President ObamaA new Gallup poll shows former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney leading President Barack Obama 58-34 among U.S. veterans.

U.S. veterans make up about 13 percent of the adult population and consist mostly of older men, according to the report. In fact, 24 percent of all adult males are veterans, compared to the 2 percent of adult women in the U.S.

“Obama and Romney are tied overall at 46% apiece among all registered voters in this sample. Men give Romney an eight-point edge, while women opt for Obama over Romney by seven points,” Gallup reports.

Gallup: Veterans Overwhelmingly Prefer Romney to President Obama“It turns out that the male skew for Romney is driven almost entirely by veterans. Romney leads by one point among nonveteran men, contrasted with the 28-point edge Romney receives among male veterans,” the report adds.

However, female veterans “do not differ significantly in their presidential vote choice from the vast majority of women who are not veterans,” Gallup’s Frank Newport writes.

So what’s the bottom line? Gallup explains the political implications of its latest report:

Veterans in the U.S. today are mostly male and two-thirds are aged 50 or older. In a population that is currently evenly split in its preferences for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney for president, veterans stand out for their 24-point preference for Romney. About a fourth of men are veterans, and it is their strong skew toward Romney that essentially creates the GOP candidate’s leading position among men today. Among nonveteran men, Obama and Romney are essentially tied.

Why do you suppose there’s such a strong preference for the former Massachusetts governor? Why do U.S. vets support him over the president?

Gallup has a few theories:

Men who serve in the military may become socialized into a more conservative orientation to politics as a result of their service. Additionally, men who in the last decades have chosen to enlist in the military may have a more Republican orientation to begin with.

But are these the only reasons?

I don’t really think this is a good sign at all. When I was in, I’d say the ratio for conservative to liberal servicemen was about 9:1. Actually shows a weakness in the establishment’s choice. Still have my fingers crossed for a delegate miracle. Just because 68% think Romney’s better than Obama, doesn’t mean morale will be high going into Iran with a draft-dodging Harvard lawyer in charge either.

JUSTANGRY, Romney was a draft dodger? Prior to receiving his draft card he was a registered religious missionary as I believe most LDS members are at his age. He also had a student deferment, but that is what all students got to go to school. Yeah, there were those who did attend school just to avoid the draft, but Romney made something of his education taking it seriously. I was facing the draft too before it was ended by Nixon, while I was attending school. We no longer had the student deferment then, I just happened to have had a very high draft number. Later, when I was ready I ignored my family trying to stop me, and joined the Army.

@RJ, Yeah, those deferments bug the crap out of me, man. I know he didn’t run off to Canada or anything like that, but he took the easy way out. I could care less about his calling with the LDS. If it was that important for him then, then maybe he should seek to be in charge of the LDS instead of Commander in Chief. I just hate it when those who’ve never sacrificed, when they could have, want to send others off to war.

As both a former LDS missionary and currently a USAF serviceman, I can tell you that serving a mission in no way is avoiding service. I’m just as proud of my service for my church as I am of my service for my country, and in many ways I’d say the mission has done me more good than my military service. You live an extremely meek life as a missionary, which you pay for. The service you provide is both spiritual and temporal for all types of people. It forces you to be loving, charitable, thrifty, and many more things. So I realize you’re probably one of those, “I hate Romney no matter what” types, but believe me,as someone who has lived both sides, don’t belittle or undervalue his missionary service – it may prove to be the most important thing he’s ever done.

Something is bad bad wrong with this article. I am a Vietnam Vet and every Vet I know supports Ron Paul. As a matter of fact Ron Paul gets more donations from the Vets than all the other candidates put together. When is comes to beating Obama in the general election Ron Paul does the best. I can absolutely guarantee any one that Romney will not beat Obama in the general election. People we need to wake up and smell the roses here before it is to late. We are being taken down the path of another four years of Obama.

Veterans who pay attention know how Sweet Old Barack really feels avout the military and veterans.
He thinks that soldiers are paid to much and those who serve are to dumb to hold civilian jobs. He also thinks the military are overpaid and that they should pay for their own health insurance policy.
(Hey Mutual of Omaha I’m a infantry machine gunner on my way to Afghanistan, how much for my medical coverage?)
Sweet old Barrack is detested by the majority of the active duty personnel as well as most of us retirees. He is quick to critisize the military and has never had to hump a ruck sack or face enemy fire.
Sweet Old Barack gave his speeches yesterday praising a group he detests and has had Homeland Security list as prime terrorists because of their training and knowledge of tactics and weapons. He is also afraid of what the military will do when he declares himself Emporer.

From what I have read and heard of Mitt it is far more likely that his “war mongering” goes about as far as Ron Paul’s…that is to say that he is a pacifist and doesn’t really believe in ANY war. Was hoping if you had some sources to bring a little clarity to the idea.

1945 (Ron Paul gets more donations from the Vets) True but a hard look at the numbers shows that it equals a very small percentage of the military. So let me get this strait… Ron Paul has consistently had more support from veterans than any other presidential candidate combined, and not a peep from the media. Now that Romney is shown to be beating Obama, its something news worthy? Secondly, Romney and Obama are almost identical when it comes to their policies, so what is there to be so excited about? If you really want to support the Vets, then why don’t you take a look at who they support for president. I for one am a veteran of the United States Air Force, and I support Ron Paul because he takes his oath to protect and defend the Constitution as seriously as I do. Neither Romny nor Obama has served a day in their life in the military, nor do they care about the Constitution as their histories and policies have shown.

@Used, Fair enough, I’ll try to give you insight on what I want. I believe it’s similar to Ron Paul and most of his supporters.

I do believe wars are necessary at times, such as Afghanistan. I only want the decision to go debated in the Congress rather in closed-door meetings of elites in think tanks. When we do go, I want a clear mission statement and formal declaration. Then send our boys in to do what they do best without politicians getting in the way trying to appease the international community. Once we obtain their unconditional surrender, I want to leave them in the rubble to think about it, rather than building them up. I’m opposed to preemptive invasions of foreign countries that didn’t attack us, or picking a side and getting involved in another country’s civil war. Or rather, we follow the “just war theory” of Christianity.

I am very much in favor of strength in numbers. We’ve achieved that by a considerable amount. No country comes remotely close to being a threat to our sovereignty with a head on military attack. That being said, if we over do it, we risk financial collapse, which would make us vulnerable. We have the luxury of two oceans for borders. Our navy is more than capable of keeping any threats at bay.

I do not believe a nuclear Iran is a threat to us any more than I believe Saddam was a threat to us with his WMD’s. There isn’t even any proof they made the decision to pursue nuclear weapons, although I certainly would understand if they did. In the past decade we’ve invaded two of their neighbors. They have to be nervous they’re next, and rightfully so. We all know both administrations are planning to invade Iran after the elections. Having a nuke is a way for them to maintain their sovereignty. It’s not that they’ve proven they’re an aggressor in the region. The propaganda regarding Iran sounds no different than Iraq and from the same people. Regardless, they wouldn’t pose a serious risk to us even if they had a few nukes.

Obama’s best friend, Bill Ayers, the domestic terrorist, posed standing on an American flag. The flag those vets defended.

Men and women who enlist do so to preserve and protect the freedoms that are and made America great and all Obama wants is to rewrite and destroy all that is America. That is why Romney is favorable to Obama are freedoms and traditions are at stake.

I’m still wondering why this is important now instead of at the beginning of the primaries. And still there’s one candidate missing. Wonder why…

The problem here is that military personnell are not permitted to engage in political activities while in uniform. (Of course, they are perfectly free, and encouraged, to vote.) Therefore, any poll of active duty military concerning the commander in chief may be skewed because of the very real possibility of reprisal if the results are, shall we say, “wrong”. But, given the quality and character of those in uniform, compared to what’s in office, one could accurately guess the outcome. Therefore, no poll is necessary.

If that is true than why isn’t Romney getting more money from troops than Obama is? and also there favorite is Ron Paul because he gets more donations from troops than all the other candidates combined. Blaze if your going to try to shove Romney down our throats atleast tell the truth about him.

      Just in time-
Are you saying the fundamental change of America only started with Obama?
Maybe you need to put your head back in the sand and go back to sleep. Most Ron Paul supporters would just like America to get back to a freedom loving nation, back to the founding principles. They want the constitution to be the law of the land again. Unfortunately you establishment Republican types are just as bad as Obama when to trampling freedom.
All the recent assaults on liberty have come from the republicans. Every one. Only 3 republicans actually voted with the constitution against these bills. The countries situation is your fault jsut as much as the dictator in chief’s.

Just in time, Most Ron Paul Voters voted for Ron Paul in 2008 ,not Barack Hussein Obama, as you said, I’m one of them. Speak for you yourself if you voted for McCain or Obama in 2008. but for you to say most Ron Paul supporters voted for Obama is little far fetched. “Men who serve in the military may become socialized into a more conservative orientation to politics as a result of their service. Additionally, men who in the last decades have chosen to enlist in the military may have a more Republican orientation to begin with.”

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. The military is a very conservative institution – strongly structured, reverence for authority, unquestionable hierarchy. Furthermore, the poll points out that most veterans are over the age of 50, and the older generations tend to also be more conservative.

VOX_IDIOCRACY, I entered the service shortly after Jimmy Carter became president. Suddenly a lot of social experimentation got rolling again. Just as it did when Bubba was elected. It’s the Democrats that lock down some many restricting regulations and demands that further reduce the very few freedoms that our service men and women are allowed to enjoy. The Dems tend to go out of their way to make the military almost hate them. Apparently you have never served, nor do you have the actual stones to do so. But again, something that I have always personally maintained, the military is not for everybody. I so hated inheriting some idiot whose parents, surroundings, or schools were ever able to mold into a decent human being. After a short time of trying to help them turn around and become a member of the organization they JOINED, I made it my duty to help them become civilians again. In my opinion it was better to make them simply a burden upon society of welfare, than a useless as t*ts on a stop sign and a drag on unit cohesion, while drawing a fairly decent paycheck.

      RJ:
VOX is hardly worthy of dialog. Given that, his suggestion that the military is inherently conservative is bunk. If classified as anything it would be socialist given the nature of its funding and the provisions of food, clothing, shelter education etc. It’s clear the VOXes of the country are not only figuring that out but exploiting it. Creating fairness in the ranks is a key initiative it seems and sets the stage for the future. Instead of the military defending peoples rights to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness, they will be used to ensure equity. I’m not suggesting by force, but by example and social structure certainly (rules of engagement etc). POTUS stated this week his job is to give everyone a “fair shot”…I couldn’t disagree more…it’s to uphold the Constitution, at least that’s what I was taught. The marginalizing of the troops by chumps like Hayes is part of defining the example of the future of the military. Just my opinion…

Idiots like VOX don’t connect why protectors of the Constitution are typically conservative. I have never served but can only assume the military have a very good understanding of just what they are protecting which leads them to conservatism.

INLIGHTOFTHINGS, Yeah, I know but it helps to unload on some of these characters at times.
Yeah, things like this guy have just got to love all of that socialist attitudes the military has to endure in the manner that you mentioned. Even when it’s just training I felt lucky to finally see the inside of a tent at least on some occasions. In most states even convicts are not subjected to many of those harsh conditions. Having made a number of prisoner escorts many years ago, I would say that much of their food was even better. And, if they want that socialized medical care, they should go and visit the VA Hospitals. I have seen some that are great while others are pathetic.

Vox you are not even close.

The only thing we are conditioned to do is get the job done. Beyond that life in the military is a liberal’s wet dream. Everything is controlled, regulations are thousands upon thousands of pages deep, but policies still can be changed on a whim, social programs out that wazzoo, and the individual is restricted heavily in favor of the group.

So by conditioning what you really mean is Veterans are forced to endure some of the worse aspects of socialism (liberalism/progressivism) for years on end in the name of family and country.

I wouldn’t call these Veterans conservatives. I would say these people just have developed a very deep level of contempt for the liberal mindset because they had to live under it. They know BS when they see it and correctly raise the BS flag to warn others when they see it’s poisen being peddled in the civilian world.
