Gasp: 1 in 4 Americans Don’t Know Which Country America Declared its Independence From

Americans, on the whole, should probably spend a little more time educating themselves about their homeland and a little less time barbecuing this weekend. According to a new poll released earlier today by Marist, a substantial portion of the nation appears confused about the most basic details of America’s founding. Marist reports:
Only 58% of residents know that the United States declared its independence in 1776. 26% are unsure, and 16% mentioned another date.
There are age differences on this question. Younger Americans are the least likely to know the correct answer. Only 31% of adults younger than 30 say that 1776 is the year in which the United States broke away from Great Britain.
As for another question about the nation’s founding — which country patriots freed themselves from — 76 percent of respondents correctly stated Great Britain. While this majority figure sounds excellent (Americans were actually up two percentage points from the previous year), this means that one in four people have no idea which country citizens fought against to obtain our freedom. That 76 should certainly be 100!
Surprisingly, nine percent of college graduates didn’t know that Great Britain was the correct answer. And, on both indicators there were significant disparities in correct answers between men and women:
When it comes to gender, men — 65% — are more likely to respond with 1776 than are women — 52%.
Men — 83% — are more likely than women — 68% — to know that the United States declared its independence from Great Britain.
Either way, Americans need to crack open those history books. Hopefully next year the proportions will reflect a nation fully in-tune with its history. We shall see.

Posted on July 1, 2011 at 6:23pmAs for this survey, I’m not surprised. I’ve yet to meet a student at the middle school I teach at who has a clue as to when various wars were fought, who was involved, etc. Unfortunately, in Georgia at least, elementary school is when they are supposed to be taught American history. In middle school, we teach mostly world geography and so they don’t get much taught to them about the world wars, Civil War, etc.

Posted on July 1, 2011 at 6:19pmThe reason they don’t know what country we declared our independence from is due to the Socialists and Far Left and infiltrated the school system in top level positions. The teachers are also far left. We have not paid attention for the past 25 years what is being taught our children and were not involved. We are almost on the verge of loosing our country.
So what must be done? Tell all the white conservatives who have not voted and encourage them to get out and vote and explain to them the reason why.
We can stop this. The Socialist’s do NOT want our children to know their Heritage and how our country was founded.
GET OUT AND VOTE. Get rid of these leeches and parasites.

Posted on July 1, 2011 at 11:13pmThese “myths” were taught as proper grammar to generations of Americans, and I believe they are still proper today. Not only that, but Mental Floss uses outrageous examples to make her case. Take this example from the website:
“One last hobgoblin. A great many educated people insist that we shouldn’t use the word whose to refer to an inanimate object. True believers would never say, “Don’t buy a car whose engine is shot.” They’d insist on “Don’t buy a car the engine of which is shot.” Please. This is not only a silly rule—it’s a damned awkward one.”
Of course, it isn’t the RULE that is “damn awkward”, but it is a “damned awkward” sentence. This is but one of many awkward sentences she uses to describe what “true believers” would say. THIS true believer would NEVER say “Don’t buy a car the engine of which is shot.” I could make the point
Report Post »clearly and concisely by saying, “Don’t buy a car if the engine is shot.” That doesn’t make the rule less valid, particularly in more formal settings.

No, it’s not. This is a rule in Latin, but not in English. This is a grammar myth.
Winston Churchill said it best:

Posted on July 1, 2011 at 8:36pmI caught the grammatical error also. I went to a parochial school from K-5, and grammar was emphasized. We were taught to diagram sentences in 3rd grade. In public school, diagramming sentences was taught in 11th grade. I don’t know whether or not they even teach diagramming sentences now, but I know that it is the best method of learning grammar.

The watering down, supported and encouraged by government at each and every level from local and state, to federal. They all insist that “no borders” is the way and retention of cultural beliefs, language and values is the method and they bend over backwards to regulate, legislate and obfuscate as they run interference in support of every one and everything EXCEPT American values.
Just what would you expect to happen? Keep in mind that conversations questioning these actions have resulted in America being persecuted from founders to ‘legal’ citizens. We are being victimized by our own government. And I don’t care if you believe it or not. The facts speak for themselves.

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 3:42amQuite right but if this poll is accurate then that says an awful lot on how parents have dropped the ball. I have always gone out of my way to make sure my sons know MORE about EVERYTHING and especially areas that the school has willfully or simply neglected to do. I totally gave up on public school when my 22 year old was about 8. It’s up to all parents to really start stepping up and get involved with what their kids are being taught. I know modern life is hectic but we have to take the time and make sure they get the real education they need. My oldest (29) has a 2 1/2 year old daughter and I’ve already offered up to pay half the cost for private school. Public schools have become a total disaster for the most part. We need to evolve the way we teach them. Maybe something more home based half the week using computer technologies and then a couple days a week in a physical school to help mostly with social skills. That would drop the cost of education like a stone. Anyone have any other ideas?
