Gay Activists‘ ’National Marriage Equality Day’ at Starbucks Has Low Turnout

Following the massive hoopla surrounding fast-food chain Chick-fil-A over its gay marriage stance last week, pro-same-sex marriage activists hoped to show support for Starbucks, a company that has come out in favor of gay rights. But, unfortunately for those organizing the “National Marriage Equality Day” on Tuesday, turnout was relatively low — at least when compared to the number of Americans who came out to laud Chick-fil-A just days earlier.

Prior to the event, The Christian Post explained the intentions behind the initiative:

Gay marriage activists and their supporters plan to consume more than their daily allowance of caffeine on Tuesday by visiting their local Starbucks in an effort to challenge last week’s “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” that was staged by pro-family supporters to demonstrate their support for the company’s stance on traditional marriage.

Tuesday’s event is being dubbed as “National Marriage Equality Day” and Starbucks was chosen because they offer benefits to the partners of same-sex relationships.

Leading up to “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” last Wednesday, an effort organized by Mike Huckabee, more than 585,000 people were registered to attend and show support for the restaurant chain, which opposes gay marriage. Much like activists’ counter “kiss-in” event that intended to rail against Chick-fil-A’s anti-gay marriage sentiment, the Starbucks event experienced a much lower attendance.

This morning, one day after the pro-gay marriage event was held, the Facebook event page shows that only 37,802 people planned to attend. And the fan page for the “National Marriage Equality Day” has only 970 “likes.” Of course, this dearth in attendance, especially when compared with the Chick-fil-A protest, can be potentially chalked up to a number of factors (and consider that we’re basing actual turnout here upon the number of people who pledged social media support).

To begin, intense controversy led to demonstrations and shows of support surrounding the Chick-fil-A incident. This, of course, came with a great deal of media coverage. As a result of constant chatter about the drama surrounding the debate, people became educated about the issue. The Starbucks event, on the other hand, didn’t receive as much attention and, thus, fewer people were likely aware that it was happening in the first place.

Also, the group behind the latest initiative — Equally Wed, a wedding magazine — ended up expanding the cause and encouraging people to embrace other gay-friendly brands in addition to Starbucks. This may have had an effect in dissuading people from going to the coffee chain, while encouraging them to embrace other businesses and causes that were more difficult to track. The New York Daily News has more:

…it was originally announced as “Starbucks Appreciation Day,” but organizers said the company asked that other corporate supporters of gay marriage, such as Nike and Amazon, be included as well.

The event page includes a long list of “brands that support LGBT rights” to support –Absolut Vodka, Google, Disney, Target and Southwest Airlines are among them – and had nearly 35,000 people promising to take part as of Tuesday afternoon.

In the end, while turnout was low, grassroots movements have a way of growing, especially when it comes to issues that some view as being rooted in “civil rights.”  The magazine’s Facebook page is currently accepting photos from the day for a special contest it is running among participants. There’s no telling if and when another “Starbucks Appreciation Day” could be in the works.

    Dr. Seuss pegged it in the book ‘The Sneetches’. Read it again and you’ll see. Homosexuals are like the sneetches without stars on their belly and they by gosh want a star on their belly. When they get it, those original star bellied sneetches want to remove their stars and the cycle continues until no one knows who had or did not have stars. In the end the word marriage is just a word. Those of us in Christian Marriage will remain in Christian Marriage even if others call themselves married.

      @ecinom Gays have the same rights right now that hetero people have. They can also marry a member of the opposite sex.

      ENCINOM: Homosexuals have always had the same right to marry as anyone. In fact, no where in the world or in history have homosexuals been treated differently in regards to marry. A homosexual has always been able to marry someone of the opposite sex just the same as a heterosexual.       Because gay sex is not natural, it does not meet the laws of nature and it is a sexual perversion between two people. Marriage is between two people who can naturally procreate, that is the intent of marriage. Two men can’t have sex and produce a baby. Two women can’t have sex and produce a baby. Therefore you are trying to redefine natural laws. We can leave God’s laws out of the argument for now, but they do play an important part as they follow natural laws.

      Marriage is a privilege, not a right. I don’t have a right to marry my dog, my cat or any other animal I might love. Even polygamy is against the law.

      I will not allow sexually perverted people gay or not to redefine marriage in order to make society accept them. They are sick people and giving into their own lust. What they do in the privacy of their own home, I have no problem. When they bring it out into the open for all to see, they have crossed the line and I have every right to prevent them to do so.

      This has nothing to do with RIGHTS, this has every thing to do with sticking their sexual perversion in the face of Christians. If it was about RIGHTS, they would be petitioning companies to accept partners in health insurance, they would create a Power of Attorney should either party became ill giving them the capability to make health treatment decisions. They would petition the IRS to change the laws to allow partners the ability to file a joint return, that opens a new can of worms.

      Marriage is not a right; it’s a contract. Marriage is defined as a contractual relationship between a man and a woman. I find homosexual activity disgusting and perverse, but I’m okay with homosexual civil unions. I‘ve had a couple of gay friends and as long as they didn’t do anything repulsive in front of me or to me and my family, I had no problem with them. I even invited a black lesbian to rent a place with me, but she was afraid to leave her all black community in Denver and live with me in a mostly white community. I went with her to a gay bar once, but the environment was too crazy for me. They were friendly while I was there, but I didn’t advertise my heterosexuality… most of them were very, very strange people. Men dressed like women and behaved like giggling flirty girls, the women were stoic and many looked like obese little men. The environment was a lot like those totally bizarre “royalty costume parties” that you see in Hollywood movies all the time.

      I’ve never really had a problem with gay’s. I believe that as long as they don’t try sneaking a hand into my pants I diden’t really care, they will need to deal with GOD about it.

      The article seems to be making excuses for why this Starbucks patronage protest didn’t pan out well, but they don’t mention the most likely cause for its dismal showing; Leftist only show up when conservatives are forced to pay for whatever the left is given. In this case leftist would have had to shell out $5 for a coffee from their own pockets. You need a job and money to do that. If Obama had stepped up and redistributed tax dollars stolen from hard working employed conservatives to give away ‘free’ Starbucks coffee to left-wing $exual deviants then the protest would have been attended by thousands.

      Encinom, gays already have equal rights. What they don’t have are “special rights”. They can get married just like anyone else (to someone of the opposite sex). They have equal rights for jobs, housing and all the rest. What they don‘t have a right to do is take away other people’s rights to give gays special rights. I am a live and let live person, but I draw the line when the person who wants to live a lifestyle most Christians believe falls outside moral, and they want to have a law forcing someone to accept something that falls outside their religious beliefs or something that is outside the biblical definition of marriage or its purpose. What’s next? People marrying the tree in the front yard or their dog?

      marriage is not a right, it is a rite. a religious ceremony that civil society accepts and respects. Civil unions are similar to marriages, but without the religious aspect and sanction of the church.
      Just like infant baptism is a rite of the church, civil society accepts this. Certification of live birth is similar, but without the religious aspect.

    Mike Huckabee did not bring the crowds out to Chick-fil-A.. Americans tired of having their right to free speech did. Mike H. maybe drew in maybe 10 – 20 % which was more Hetrosexual people than there are homosexuals in America: The rest.80% came on their own.       A wonderful question. Christians engage in bigotry all the time when they regurgitate bigoted preachments from their holy book and then hide behind freedom of religion. This is cowardice. Do you really think you’re a freedom fighter for standing up to our diminutive homosexual minority that simply wants to be treated like humans?

      Christians engage in hypocrisy all the time when they frantically demand that certain old testament dictates be applied to our society, but completely ignore parts of the Bible that are clearly incompatible with civil society. In other words, they think homosexuality is an abomination, but don’t support the stoning of adulterous women, etc. This is also cowardice. Almost all christians in the western world are practicing a vanilla form of christianity, which is good for the rest of us, but it makes them sound pretty inconsistent when they trumpet about the Bible being the perfect word of God.

How are gays not treated like human beings? Back up your rhetoric, because right now you are showing what the gay community will do to every Christian in this country – silence them. Yes, the Old Testament dictates stoning for adultery but Jesus stated, when confronted with the stoning of a prostitute, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” In other words, treat others with love and forgiveness. Love and forgiveness is the basis for Christianity. If Intollerance for homosexuality is bigoted then you sir are exhibiting the same bigotry for your intolerance of Christians.       Evil Christians are the most giving of ALL groups combined. Giving of their time, resources, money, etc. No other group comes close. BTW, how’s the Atheists for humanity movement going? That’s right, you simply bash Christians and do nothing to help.
      Next, Christians are the largest group dying to fight against slavery. They were hung alongside blacks. Also they stopped the Salem witch trials in the USA and were key to stopping it in Europe. Do you know who started it? Government …BIG church run governments that you support.
      Jews and Christians are the most persecuted groups of all time…BARR NONE! No groups even come close. Where is your sympathy for all these Christians killed?

      This is NOT a issue based on rights. It‘s a group of pervs that feel the need for acceptance of their wickedness so they don’t feel guilty. Well guess what, there are a whole lot of people who will never accept this perverted behavior no matter what and trying to compare the struggle of blacks to homosexuals is a travesty and a slap in the face of every black person who had to live through that. Homosexuals have a choice and should not have any special rights afforded them just because they choose that lifestyle, they should live with their choices.       And you base your statistics on what facts? I would say the word spread as things like this do. I would also say since the gay population of the country is around 1.8% to 1.9% that might have hoped for something less than the pro Chick fel-A group (realistically). I certainly have no truck with gays, but I am not in favor of taking freedom of speech and limiting the religious rights of over 70% of the population in favor of 1.8% to 1.9% of the population have the right to marry any sex or anything (maybe trees and pets will be the next horizon for the next group of folks living outside the norm?).

    If the people supporting Chick-Fil-A followed the people at Starbucks with a protest of their own you might see the real difference in the numbers that really support traditional marriage.
    I suggest that the traditional marriage supporters pick a day and show up at Starbucks to order just a small cup of drip coffee. That way you could have real data showing how people in this country REALLY feel about supporting traditional marriage. I’m thinking Starbucks may then realize they may want to rethink their stance.

      I‘ll be meeting my spouse at Wendy’s later this afternoon and buying a cup of coffee there. Normally, I don’t go out to buy coffee, I make it at home. I don’t like Starbucks simply because I drink coffee black with no sugar. Their coffee is a dark roast with a very bitter aftertaste. To compensate for that, they load the things up with calories via the syrups, milk and whipped cream.

      So, I’m making a point of it to go out and buy a coffee elsewhere. Dunkin’ Donuts would have been my first choice, but there isn’t one between the two locations where my spouse and I are.

      While I am “snottier” about my coffee than any drinker of Starbuck’s swill (because I make my own coffee. one cup at a time, using only freshly ground Sumatra coffee, in my very expensive Swiss-made coffee machine), this is all beside the point. The problem is the unreasonable demands of homosexuals in demanding all of society change just to accommodate the sexual fetishes of a micro-minority who wish to wed without making the necessary changes to their anatomy. In this day and age, there is nothing preventing non-related, consenting adults from marrying — except for their homosexual fetishes. Any homosexual in love can choose to have sexual reassignment surgery. Chastity Bono can now marry another woman because Chastity is now Chaz Bono. Gays are not prevented from doing the same — except for their love of their fetishes.     I don’t believe that people turned out for the Chick Filet A appreciation because of any hatred of gays, no matter how many times the left claims it; they turned out in massive numbers because politicians were attempting to restrict the business endeavors of a company whose owner has conservative Christian beliefs. Here let me help your ignorance become educated. Procreate means this: “to beget or generate (offspring).” Clearly your definition does not align with the actual definition or biology. Two of the same sex by natural biological law cannot “beget or generate (offspring)” or let’s use a one word term, procreate.

      And please do not come out and start with the born that way speech. People all over the world everyday are born with deficiencies and learn or through medicine how to overcome them. So when you throw out the “we are born this way” you forget very deeply why we have sexual organs and what the use of them are for. Ah there it is! To procreate, pleasure is a byproduct of the natural law to repopulate the earth. As life leaves, so does life enter.
