Gay Devil Column Leads to Author’s Resignation From U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Daniel Avila Resigns Follow Gay Devil Comments

Daniel Avila

A controversial newspaper column has led Daniel Avila, associate director for policy and research of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, to resign.

In an article that gained widespread attention, Avila suggested that the devil may be responsible for homosexual attraction — an insinuation that sent some in the gay rights community into a tizzy.

Following the firestorm, which the Blaze first reported on yesterday, a spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic bishops said that Avila offered to step down and his resignation was accepted today.

Avila’s column appeared a week ago in The Pilot, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston. Avila had written that there’s evidence suggesting the devil is responsible for same-sex attraction. Gay rights groups and others condemned the column.

On Wednesday, the newspaper removed the article and Avila apologized for any pain it may have caused. He said his views did not represent the position of the bishops’ conference. His full apology read:

“Statements made in my column, ‘Some fundamental questions on same-sex attraction’ of October 28, do not represent the position of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the column was not authorized for publication as is required policy for staff of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The teaching of Sacred Scripture and of the Catechism of the Catholic Church make it clear that all persons are created in the image and likeness of God and have inviolable dignity. Likewise, the Church proclaims the sanctity of marriage as the permanent, faithful, fruitful union of one man and one woman. The Church opposes, as I do too, all unjust discrimination and the violence against persons that unjust discrimination inspires. I deeply apologize for the hurt and confusion that this column has caused.”

Avila’s article was particularly problematic because he has been unofficially viewed as the “bishops’ marriage guy,” meaning that he has represented the council’s take on marriage in Washington.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Somebody please explain to me why it is perfectly fine for the creators of Southpark to have Satan and Saddam Hussein as gay lovers for the last 10 years. But, let a Christian, and heaven forbid, a Catholic Christian, mention gayness and now all of a sudden it’s a problem? HYPOCRITES.

Well, that’s true, but do we always believe the devil makes us do the negative things we do? God gave us free will, and we choose the choices we make in life through our own free will. However, now a days, it would seem that a Christians freedom of speech is stifled in lieu of allowing secular humanists to have their right to freedom of speech. Why,for instance, are atheist allowed to have huge billboards shoving their beliefs down our throats, and yet, a cemetery that had had the cross displayed for 60 plus years has to be taken down as it offends none Christians and atheist? Double standard, I’d say!

      He was and is right.
Willful sin gives the enemy legal right to enter your house, your body. A born again Christian cannot be possessed but can be infected, oppressed and affected by demons or devils. We are spiritual beings having a fleshly experience and not the opposite. This experience is but for a short time. There once was a time when we were not but there will never be a time when we will not be. We are eternal beings and it is our choice where we will spend eternity.
This author was correct in what he was trying to get at. In Mark 16:16-18 Jesus spoke of what signs WILL follow a true believer. If you have not cast out demons or even believe that they are a clear and present danger than you cannot consider yourself a believer or follower of Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior. It is that simple. Same goes for those that reject speaking in tongues. Sorry if you disagree and I am truly sorry for your eternal choice you have made.
If you wish to dispute what I have said I suggest that you spend some time with God and His Word first.
Most of us MUST go through an unlearning process of what passes for the church has taught us.
I pray that you all seek God while He is near. Repent and confess your sins to Him and ask Him to reveal His will you through His Holy Spirit and with His Word.

It depends on what you consider to be speaking in tongues, dear. If it’s the biblical version where everyone understands you in their own native language, then that’s fantastic! But if it’s the “commonly-accepted:” version of random and meaningless babbling that sounds like someone has been possessed by a demon rather than the Spirit, I have a definite problem with it. God would never obfuscate His message behind demon-like babbling. God makes His message quite clear for all to hear, believer or not.

“Avila suggested that the devil may be responsible for homosexual attraction”

Americans just don’t have the courage to stand firm in their convictions:

7 – Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He [God] is righteous.
8 – He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning.
      -1John 3

10 – Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
11 – Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 – For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
      -Ephesians 6

Satan doesn’t make us do anything. He may put temptations in our paths, he made lead a horse to water… but he can‘t do the sin for us and he can’t make the horse drink.
Satan tempted Christ and Christ refused him. Christ showed us how it is to be done.

I sure am glad that I now understand that Gideon612 has shown us the true way… we need to speak in tongues or we are not saved. I do think Gideon needs to let Christ in on the new “Gideon policy.” How dare Christ tell the thief on the cross that today he would be in paradise… and that man never spoke in tongues. Me personally… I’ve always thought that it was a miracle of pentecost where the words came out of a German mouth as German but by the time they reached a Roman ear/brain the words had miraculously changed into Latin. Wow, my Christ is more powerful than your Christ.

I wonder why Christians fight so often over their interpretations of the Bible. Some things are a given but somethings are left up to you. Is Jesus a democrat? I think he’s of the party of God and not any party of man. Would Jesus be a black belt in karate? These are just silly questions that require silly answers… and your eternal salvation does not hinge on how you answer. Get on your knees and repent. The true Christ loves you and all like you… He hates the sin but loves the sinner.

Have either of you done any word studies of the original texts? For one there is the gift of speaking in other tongues, which is different languages that are earthly established. The second is speaking in tongues. This is found in both the Old and New Testaments. Paul spoke of this several times and I had noted where Jesus had said this, so this is nothing new to Him.
As for the thief on the cross…he was not baptized either so that flies in the face of man made doctrine and false churches as well. And yes there is random babbling and people that try to teach people how to speak in tongues. There are churches that forbid people from speaking in the heavenly language of God and those you should avoid at all costs. This is also know as grieving the Holy Spirit.
I am sorry if these are new to you. I was once misled and on a downward path that was given me by a mainstream man-made denomination.
We are not to follow man but follow God. How can you be following God when one is kneeling and bowing to a man in a gown standing on an elevated platform before them???
I urged those that opposed what I had stated to seek God and His Word before disregarding what I had written and I did not see any evidence of that in what was spoken against me.
Ask God to show you anything that is between Him and you, blocking you from Him. Repent of these things. Confess these to God and ask Him for forgiveness. Ask Him to send His Holy Spirit to guide and teach you through His Word.

Avila says that there’s evidence that the devil causes gayness. I‘m guessing he’s using the term ‘evidence’ rather loosely. I think if such evidence does exist, it’d be far more useful in proving the falsifiable existence of a supernatural evil in the universe than anything as mundane as homosexual attraction.
Also, what is he apologizing for? Is it because his ‘evidence’ has since been disproved, or he has other cause to modify and refine his theory? I hope he’s not apologizing because the church is embarrassed that someone is publically expressing what they all believe but which has since become unfashionable in the presence of polite society.
If you really believe it, then proclaim it loudly and proudly! This passive-aggressive nonsene from the church however, is pathetic. They want to have it both ways. They desire to keep their medieval bigotry but dilute it enough to make it palatable for modern society.

Hey, all you armchair philosophers, the take-home point here is that a researcher for a Catholic group of CLERGY suggested that the devil may be an important vector in the sin of homosexuality, transgender, et al. So enough of the freewill debate and start asking yourselves and each other how is it POSSIBLE that a religious writer is reprimanded and forced to RESIGN for commenting that EVIL is the root of homosexual behavior. You have LOST your country. You have LOST your church. And now you are LOSING your rights! If you are Catholic, you need to start making a very loud noise about the LBGT community in your faith. And EVERYONE needs to start loudly reaffirming that homosexual behavior is a SIN. Or else a very real GOD will unleash a very real WRATH on this nation!

It is true, homosexual actions are a behavioral choice like any other form of fornication. Choosing to act and think in ways that are contrary to God’s design and commands is called rebellion. Satan, the Devil, was cast out when iniquity was found in him, the rebellion against God, arrogance and pride. Homosexual behavior is satanic, as is pride, arrogance, and defying the Living God.
The Catholic Church is also in the same boat as the rest of us. All are in defiance of the Living God, save salvation by Grace through Christ.

This is a pattern that has been followed since the Bible and prayer was removed from public schools back in 1962. The reverent fear of God has been lost to this generation and that is one of the major goals of the progressive movement.

This is the result of getting the focus off of the Gospel and putting it on something else (e.g. “social” gospel). Anything + the gospel IS NOT the Gospel. And is a distraction.

This is the Gospel – it is NOTHING LESS & CANNOT be anything more or anything else:

Moreover, brethren, I DECLARE to you THE GOSPEL which I preached to you, and you received, and where you stand; By which YOU are SAVED, IF you keep in memory what I preached, UNLESS you believed in vain. For I delivered to you … that which I received, how CHRIST DIED for OUR SINS according to the scriptures; And that he was BURIED, and that he ROSE AGAIN the third day according to the scriptures… – 1Corinth 15:1-4

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. -1Corinth 2:2

ALL SIN (incl homosex.) comes from the heart of man. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? – Jeremiah 17:9 If all men were NOT sinners & workers of iniquity – Christ died in vain. Satan is the accuser of the brethren (Job, Rev 12:1). He lurks about seeking who he can destroy (1Peter 5:8). He tempts man to do evil (Job, Matt 4:5, 1Thes 3:5), but he cannot make us fall (James 4:7).

When satan could not destroy the Church by martyr, he joined it and has been corrupting it from w/in ever since. Practiced homosexuality in the church is just another gross example.

It is interesting to note that the sin of hs (& all sexual immorality) is spoken of as a judgment in scripture (Romans 1) – specifically for the sin of failing to Glorify the One True God and making the Incorruptible God into the image of corruptible man (who our culture worships) – Rom 1:18-23:

THEREFORE God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. FOR THIS REASON GOD gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. – Romans 1:24-27

Our culture has been turned over to the vile passions that reside in the hearts of men. All of us straight & homosexual MUST repent of all sin & turn to Jesus Christ, while we still have time. The end is imminent.

People, don’t ask if God is on your side, as if you are on God’s side. You will not find God’s perspective in the gender neutral bibles written for itchy ears.

If God said having same sex sexual relations was holy, then it would be holy. However, God did not say that but rather the opposite. He created men and women to have families. He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, and flooded the world because of sin much of it fornication. He created the world, He gave his Word in scriptures, and in flesh. Might just want to pay attention.

I am glad he published this article. God gave man freewill. Satan and his demons capitalize on our weaknesses by temptation, but ultimately we as human beings have the choice to give in to the temptation. Man loves sin and will self-justify sin to make him or herself feel good even if the self-justification is a lie. Homosexuality is wrong in the eyes of God according to scripture. Good things that are approved by God do not come with negative consequences such as disease and ; however sin in the eyes of God has negative -consequences. Enough with the political correctness; sometimes the truth hurts, but is necessary.

That concept of men and angels having sex is not possible based on the created order of angels; they are celestial beings and have no physical bodies to copulate with, nor are they driven by that desire. Genesis 6 is the result of something much more close to home – the sons of God and daughters of men were the mixing of Cain’s offspring with the more godly line descending from Adam, leading to successively corrupt and murderous generations over that 1000-year span until the flood. It was in this frustration that God stated 120 years would be the span of a life.

There is no question that the abomination of homosexual attraction is demonic, as sexuality is perhaps the most sacred gift God presented man with – the ability to create life itself in the very joy of love that God creates with. Demonic angels are in rebellion to God and use their celestial nature to possess and persuade men to go against God’s perfect will. The desire of same-sex attraction is no worse than any other sin – greed, murder, lying – but the church condemns people to hell through unrepentance when they attempt to appease the culture when it is opposed to God’s will.

God loves everyone – gays, Buddists, nuns, and Baptists – he is no respecter of individual people, but we still must repent of what offends HIM to be forgiven and healed of our sinfulness. Only Jesus Christ can make a true blood sacrifice available to you for that forgiveness, and, being that He is the only ever God-made-into-man, H

I‘m not religious and I don’t care about Catholic politics, but is this really what we have become? According to the bible, homosexuality is a sin. Logically, sin cannot come from God, therefore it must come from Satan. How can the Catholic church possibly not support the idea that sin comes from Satan? At some point the existing churches need to publicly admit that they don‘t have the courage to actually support the supposed ’Word of God’ and just close their doors in embarrassment.

Trying to mesh an ancient belief in the moral evil of homosexuality with the belief in the individual rights of man is difficult. Factor in the American dislike for rules and authority which makes this even harder. Heard that Father Michael Pfleger was recently relieved of duty at St. Sabina’s on April 27, but heaven’t heard any update. Have a feeling that the future is going to be a rocky one between the Far Left Social Justice set of the Church with the more conservative beliefs of the Pope’s. Think Mr. Silva just felt the controversy’s sting.

I have heard such ideas as the Bishop offered, though as far as I know, no specific Bible verse declares as much. The Bible is crystal clear about homosexuality however:

For this reason God gave them up to vile lusts; for both their females changed the natural use into that contrary to nature; and in like manner the males also, leaving the natural use of the female, were inflamed in their lust towards one another; males with males working shame, and receiving in themselves the recompense of their error which was fit” Romans 1:26-27

There is no case for homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle for Christians anywhere in the Bible. You will not find it.

Sin is sin. God looks at sin as a cold. He hates it. He doesnt hate the sinner he hates the sin.

He also hates the sinful heart, the sinful thought, the sinful mind. He destroys sin and those who practice it. Not our job to judge, God will do that.

Please, as a Catholic..I say…either you believe that statement or you don’t…IF he is made to resign then everyone at the paper should be made to resign..either that or you stand by your beliefs. Remember, there is no political correctness in the new testament….Matthew 10:33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. IN other words stop being a coward!!!!

This is just more of the moral “whatever” attitude that seems to be sweeping the country. In an effort to get along, all standards of right and wrong have been swept away. People here “illegally” are now just poor souls. The murder of unborn children is up to mom/dad. Gay marriage with benefits is now an accepted “right ” of citizenship. Wanting to commit suicide and assisting same is just up to the individual. Oddly enough, at a time when so many citizens have lost the ability to self-discipline, our laws are more loosely enforced ( witness all of the Occupying of public space with police escorts! ). Moral Crunch time.

He shouldn’t have resigned or apologized for his opinion. Devil or not, there is nothing good about homosexuality which flies in the face of the NATURAL ORDER. Its practice is, therefore, DEVIANT. Sorry folks, but that’s the reality, like it or not. However, discrimination on the basis of someone’s sexual orientation is completely UNACCEPTABLE in every instance.

Catholicism will survive the Catholic Church. The Faithful will redirect this progressive phase by deserting the organization, bringing their checkbooks with them. I am Catholic by belief, not the rantings du jour coming from a pulpit. Homosexuals are sinners and are to be prayed for and pitied, for they have CHOSEN to act on unnatural (for intelligent beings) and immoral impulses. Sodomites are sinners and are to be prayed for and pitied, along with adulterers – CHOOSING to act on unnatural and immoral impulses. Now, will progressives force me to accept and befriend adulterers, sodomites as well as homosexuals, now that I am culturally obliged to Tolerate their behavior?
Take a stand – not one of hate, of conviction. So many are willing to cave for fear of being labeled a hater. TAKE A STAND. If all do, such labels will have no power.
