Gay Kiss During High School Musical Leads to a Student Walk-Out

A scene with characters from the controversial "Zana, Don't!" play
Some people aren’t comfortable with public displays of affection. Don’t believe me? Consider the scene that unfolded at a Hartford Public High School (in Hartford, Connecticut), when audiences reacted to a pro-gay advocacy play featuring two boys locking lips.
The musical, called “Zanna, Don’t!,“ is about an ”opposite world” of sorts in which heterosexuals are the minority and homosexuals are the majority. In the play, straight individuals are outcasts and the most popular guy in school is — gasp — a gay student who is on the chess team.
“Zanna, Don’t” was brought to the school by the Leadership Greater Hartford’s Quest, which is described by the Hartford Courant newspaper as, “a program for professionals that develops leadership skills.” The paper also reports that the group put on the show in an anti-bullying effort that members hoped would help gay, bisexual, transgendered or “questioning youth.” The Courant continues:
In a partnership with the nonprofit True Colors, one Quest team raised $10,000 to show the musical three times at Hartford High this month. The Knox Foundation and the Samuel Roskin Trust at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving gave sponsorship money.
But not everyone was enthusiastic about the show. As soon as the kiss took place, there was instantaneous clamoring. Screams, loud voices and disgust broke out and the school’s football team stomped out in protest. Some people were so anxious to leave the auditorium that they allegedly jumped over seats to get to the exit.
Now, here’s the intriguing part. The school’s principal, David Chambers, claims that the students knew beforehand that there would be homosexual affections displayed in the play. As a result, some had asked to be excused prior to the assembly. While Chambers did consider sending a letter to parents in an effort to allow them to opt their children out of the assembly, he inevitably decided against it.
According to Beliefnet, Chambers said that he believes the teens need to develop “a sense of empathy toward gays and lesbians.” But be contends, “Our kids are not there yet.” School personnel had to work diligently to prevent the students from leaving the school. Chambers continues:
“Even though it’s kind of chaotic, kind of wild and crazy, I see it as very successful. Our kids never deal with this, they keep it inside, and that’s that nervous energy. That’s why they walked out.”
In response to this, Beliefnet’s Rob Kerby wrote:
It apparently did not occur to him that some of the kids had moral issues with the scene — believing that glorifying same-gender romance is wrong. Chambers’ intent was to wear down the students sense of disgust and discomfort with viewing homosexuality on stage.
While there certainly was a negative response, the Courant also reports that many students enjoyed the show and found it important to progressing discussion surrounding homosexuality. Dineily Vargas and Angel Ayala, who are both 17-year old 11th-graders in the law and government academy, said that the show actually changed the minds of people they had seen being “homophobic” in the past.

The pressure needs to come from the parents. Go to your local school, and demand a copy of every single book, handout, film, that your children will be reading, watching or discussing. Take time to read them through. A child’s success comes from the amount of time a parent spends with them. Kids are being taught every day that parents are dumb, that parents are not their ultimate authority, that parents don’t know what is best for their children. All part of the commie crap that is spreading like wildfire through this country. If you ask any child, rich or poor, what they want it will be time spent with their parents. No amount of stuff can make up for that time. Lazy parents equal lazy kids!

I am studying to be psychologist, so I have had to watch, read , and learn about many uncomfortable conditions concerning transgender and homosexuality. IF somebody could put the money up and a study could be done, as my experience indicates from talking with maybe 2 dozen gay people, we will find out they all had an environmental factor triggering their sexual and gender disposition. I am not so sure about the gender one, but I bet there is still one involved. It is clearly a miss identification of what love is. The whole sexual movement of the 60′s has also lead to great many people misidentifying love and relationships. Often leading to abusive relationships and behaviors. Look, with that being said, they are who they are, I am not about judging anybody or trying to change them if they feel this is the person they are. Just like the addict or alcoholic, one will never admit they have a problem until they hit bottom and there is nothing one can do to get them to change. While I have a religious and evolutionary bias, I believe if a person is able to sustain their lives in a productive and useful way and aren’t hurting anybody else, then leave them be, it’s their life. However, plays like this in the public school is uncalled for. Lust is not Love. As a recovering addict, I had to learn this cause lust kept leading to relapse.

This theme of this play is exactly what the minister used to try to get us to imagine how gays feel. She had us close our eyes and try to imagine that the everybody in school was gay and that I we(I) was the only straight one. This was so weird and I never ever went back again. However, as I closed my eyes and imagined this, first thing I thought is I must find the art teacher, I bet they are straight in this backward imaginary world …. hahaha I then thought my odds are pretty good of getting with her because I was the only other straight person , as was she, it was actually kinda of exhilarating. But I digress, what a stupid idea. You can’t imagine it because nobody can reproduce. They call you the “breeders”… Look, I don’t want to hurt anybody gays feelings of bash them, they can do as they wish, just don’t impose your stuff on me. Same goes for straight people. I am bothered by those public displays of affection by them as well. I also find those who are openly intimate to be quite corny and feel uncomfortable around them. I had a friend who was like that and I couldn’t be around them two. Who wants to be around to people constantly hanging on each other, it makes you feel left out, and separates them from you.

They got rid of those mean old days, when kids sat quiet, could do cold math facts, knew American history, geography, word clothes that made them look like young men and young women.

You can’t expect us straight folks to undo the way we feel no more than we can expect you to change away from how you feel about same sex. Sex between two consenting adults is something that we should not be pushing in someones face. It should always remain behind closed doors. I realize its not actual sex but we know what the next step is of course and that is what revulses many. He says the students are not THERE YET, that only means they have more brainwashing and re-education to be had on the matter, then surely they’ll come around. But isn’t that like the straight community trying to brainwash gays not to be gay and especially in a public setting expecting everyone to be down with it and if they are not they are automatically considered hate filled bigots on the highest order not fit to even breath the same air.
We do live in an upside down world and I have no doubt that eventually gays given enough time will continue to destroy any notion of what is normal regarding the sexes. The parents should now show some courage and insist on having the principal and everyone else responsible for this official bullying to take place. Americans need to make it clear that they are not going to just “get used to it”. Pray for everyone immersed in the culture of death and work to remove them from every local, state and federal position of political, judicial, educational, or bureaucratic authority. Elections have consequences and those consequences can be morally, economically and physically deadly, as demonstrated by this example, the DemocRAT party and the current federal administration. Whatever the % is, they won‘t be happy until it’s MUCH higher, That’s why they insist on teaching this stuff from kindergarten on. I hear in OH of schools where kids in grade school are ASKED to declare a sexual identity whether straight, gay or transgender, or even bisexual. My grandkids say the staff actually encourage the kids to go to homosexual activities to (see) what they’re like.

If there is bullying, deal with the issue at hand, but enough is enough. Fortunate for the rest of us, there are actually gays among us who agree that it is not the place nor is it appropriate. Those particular gays understand what freedom and morality is. I have no issue with gays, but I will not be mandated by the government to accept someone and like them because of their sexuality under the threat of being prosecuted or jailed. Hate crime legislation is NOT about minority groups or homosexuals. Those who understand that and realize that they are being used as a vehicle on the path to tyranny get why this debate is deeper than the sexual preference of someone. In fact, it has nothing to do with it. It’s a way to continue chopping away at the first amendment. Do any gays wonder why the left will not condemn the intolerance (up to and including murder) in Islam?

When are the schools going to ACCEPT that it is not their place to determine views on sexuality and force it upon kids? This has no place in a school. If there is bullying, deal with the issue at hand, but enough is enough. Fortunate for the rest of us, there are actually gays among us who agree that it is not the place nor is it appropriate. Those particular gays understand what freedom and morality is. I have no issue with gays, but I will not be mandated by the government to accept someone and like them because of their sexuality under the threat of being prosecuted or jailed.

The safe schools czar has decreed it SHALL BE taught to kids, AND PARENTS SHOULD SET DOWN (not sit because we’re being put there.) AND SHUT UP! It is their job to educate children in the subjects of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Language Arts, Geography, History (not from any paticular political view), Government (again, not from any political view), Technology, and electives such as Art and Physical education.
Philosophy, and morality are subjects taught at home or through organizations approved by parents such as church or accepted social gatherings. So called educators like this principal trample parent’s rights, wishes, and responsibilities in the name of political correctness. Shame.

The entire premise is that the world is inherently homosexual, and one boy with magical powers named Zanna is working as a matchmaker to get people together. The new star quarterback has just transferred into the school and isn’t fitting it; it turns out that he’s straight, and hetero-phobia is rampant in the school. So to make sure he and his lover can stay together, Zanna casts a spell that alters the entire world, making the world mostly straight.
The music, as said, is hilariously upbeat and cheerful. The moral of the story is pretty good too; bullying is bad, acceptance is good. There’s no mention of religion or overt sex in the music itself (the closest you get is “showering together” in a military song).
Anyway, worth listening to, unless you’re extremely opposed to anything gay. Keep an open mind and it’ll have you laughing.

Apparently most posters here do not understand the concept of a musical having objectionable material but still being good. For example, as a Christian, I dislike Mormonism claiming to be “the same” as actual Christian religions. They don’t follow the Bible, so that makes it neo-Christian at best; pretty much equivalent to Islam. But the Book of Mormon? Fantastic production. Also, many people can claim that Jesus Christ: Superstar stretches biblical Scripture: but I also found it thoroughly entertaining.
Objectionable material =/= a bad musical. There’s the point of this.
As said, if you’re opposed to anything gay, (h*omophobic, as it is commonly referred to), you won’t enjoy it. If you loosen up, you might.

Interesting you should bring up Jesus Christ Sperstar. I listened to that as a kid religiously, well not actually :-) I loved the music, and being the son of a priest I was familiar enough with the story to find it compelling. I love music ABOUT something. This makes it hard for me to listen to some music because I pay attention to the lyrics and if I hate what they are saying (that’s assuming I can figure it out) I don’t enjoy the music.
Anyway, that was when I was ten to thirteen years old. I wasn’t really religious. Then I went through an atheist phase and then converted back to Christianity, but this time taking the faith seriously. I listened to the musical again after five or seven years of not hearing it and I was shocked to find out how blasphemous it was. It hadn’t struck me before, because I didn’t care about thise things. But now it struck me so hard it ruined the music for me. You could be Cole Porter, but if you write a song about my mother being a whore I’m not going to like it. I was hugely disappointed because my favorite musical from my youth I couldn’t enjoy anymore. Sucks.
But then I found Les Mis and every thing’s grand :-D
Needless to say I would NOT enjoy this musical no matter how snappy and funny the music was.

That musical is put on by the South Park guys, who ripped Mormonism a good and well deserved one. Now if a MORMON enjoyed that show that would be a sign of broad artistic tolerance.
Oh, and I HATED the Phantom of the Opera. the music is pedestrian and overblown (quite the feat, that) and the story is perverse, twisted macabre faux romanticism of a kind only a teen age girl, or suitably immature woman, would really enjoy. It was a great spectacle on stage. No doubt that was why it was popular on stage and why it sucks as a soundtrack and blew chunks as a film. Jekyl and Hyde with David Hasselhoff was better, though I prefer the earlier arrangement of THAT show.

I was pretty clear that a musical about the Ten Commandments would be an example of a musical that liberals like Locked would find offensive and make sure they found some dumb arsed reason to prohibit it’s viewing. Frankly, I enjoy “Phantom’; the tension, especially in a song like “Music of the Night” is palpable and moving. And that’s what I am. If we accept that Leviticus is moot thanks to Jesus’s sacrifice, and that 1 Romans by a similar vein is referring to people cleansed by His death, then both are irrelevant to the discussion.
Perhaps you ascribe to the idea, like KMichaels, that two men kissing is on the same level of racial lynchings? Or perhaps you realize that Jesus never spoke on homosexuality Himself, but spoke frequently of love; loving thy neighbor, loving thy enemies, loving God. That’s the heart of the matter; the message of Jesus.
Now, back to the topic at hand: I do NOT think this should have been shown at a high school. The themes are difficult for a teenage audience; heck, even in “straight” high school musicals there are cat-calls and audience reaction when the leading stars kiss (or at least there was in mine; maybe things have changed since I was a kid). Many children don’t possess the emotional maturity to deal appropriately with something like this, and it showed, as in this case the football team tried to make a point by leaving the optional school play en masse despite knowing what would be going on.
Many adults obviously don’t posses this maturity either, as can be seen by some responses here. Strangely, these people haven’t listened to the music or seen the musical, but are experts on it.

The purity laws and sacrificial system is moot, but according to the Council of Jerusalem sexual morality is still obligatory on Christians. Leviticus clearly identifies the parameters of what they understood to be sexual immorality. We have no NT Testament text that gives us any hint that those parametrs are not still binding and the assumption that they are still binding is the only one that fits easily into all passages referencing sexual behavior. That is how the church has read and used the Bible for 19 centuries, until the last few decades, and those sections of the church that have begun to read things differently have primarily been among the same who depart from classic Christology and soteriology.
You will be hard pressed to find a practical and vibrant doctrine of Sin among churches that depart from the prohibition against homosexuality. And without a solid doctrine of Sin there is little importance in any doctrine of salvation from sin.
Point of inquiry. To what branch of Christianity did you convert to from atheism? I am an Anglican. I returned to my roots. Did you do the same? I too prefer the writings of converts. They often get it about the pleasures and attrcations of the world and of the inadequacies of that. They don’t take the faith for granted.
