Gay Marriage Close to Legal in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Gay marriage is all but legalized in Maryland with the legislature giving its final OK Thursday to the law that is awaiting the expected signature of the governor.
The state Senate voted 25-22 for the law. The vote comes less than a week after the House of Delegates barely passed the measure.
Maryland will become the eighth state to allow gay marriage when Gov. Martin O’Malley – who sponsored the bill – signs the legislation.
Opponents, though, have vowed to bring the measure to referendum in November. They will need to gather at least 55,726 valid signatures of Maryland voters to put it on the ballot and can begin collecting names now that the bill has passed both chambers.
Senators rejected some amendments to the legislation Thursday. Proponents warned that amending the bill could kill it because gathering enough support for altered legislation in the House would be difficult.
Last year senators passed a similar measure by 25-21, but the bill died in the House after delegates rescinded their initial support citing concerns that it could violate religious liberties of churches and business owners who do not support same-sex unions.

Posted on February 24, 2012 at 1:09amThe fact that the Constitution says nothing about marriage; says not a word of definition only leads me to believe that the Founders were all in agreement that marriage was indeed the legal union of one man and one woman. Think about it. Does anyone think they had one conversation or debate about the definition of marriage? Don’t mess with universal institutions please. I’m not anti-gay. Far from it. I believe that marriage means something. And if you change it for some, you change it for all.

Posted on February 24, 2012 at 1:29pmMarriage is not mentioned in the constitution because it is none of the government’s business who enters into a legal contract with another. Yes, marriage has a religious definition, and I certainly don’t want to force any religion to accept something against their teachings. But marriage is also the merger of two equals. It is a secular, civil legal contract that conveys rights of a familial relationship to the betrothed. How can freedom and liberty be preserved when the government gets to tell us who can and cannot enter into a legal agreement? (Obviously, age and mental state aside.)
Nearly all the legal benefits of marriage can be obtained through other contracts that convey those rights. And since the gov. cannot prevent two people of the same sex from coupling, there is NO benefit to the country or to traditional marriage and families to prevent SS couples from enjoying the same rights and privileges as any hetero union. Call it merger or civil unions instead of marriage, but provide EQUAL protection under the law.
Be anti-gay all you want, but there is no justification for the gov having any say in who marries whom. Conversely, there is absolutely no justification for the gay left to use the marital rights argument to force churches or church-run orgs into doing anything against their beliefs. The point of gov is to preserve the rights of the individual, not impose one set of values upon those who disagree. That goes both ways, people.

Posted on February 24, 2012 at 8:32pmI certainly don’t want to indoctrinate children with anything about homosexuality, tho the progressive agenda certainly uses it in conjunction with all their nonsense. We don’t need to be teaching homosexuality OR heterosexuality to kids in schools, they will figure it out for themselves. Parents need to be teaching their children from young ages (age appropriate language and context, of course) about what sex is and what the consequences are, in accordance to their own values. The progressives use the schools to push their agenda and that includes indoctrination about sexuality – both orientations. Planned Parenthood and their ilk have convinced enough people to let schools push their agendas on our kids, and parents have gladly abdicated their responsibility. Parents, take the responsibility yourselves and tell the schools to shove it, regardless if they are teaching homosexuality or not. The only thing that should be taught is tolerance of others. Teach your kids your values, but stop teaching them to hate others for their differences. I don’t expect you to condone my behavior or my lifestyle, but I do expect tolerance and I have every right to demand it. I don’t condone straight people shacking up or making babies without an intact home with a mom and a dad, but I tolerate the people who do it and don’t treat them poorly. I have every right to expect the same.
Kids ARE being indoctrinated in 1000 ways by progressives. Gays aren’t the prob, progressives are.

Posted on February 24, 2012 at 1:41pm@Mac, you’re wrong here too. I believe in SS unions AND I believe that children should be raised in an intact home by a married mom and dad. There can be no doubt that the BEST possible scenario for children is to be raised with the juxtaposition of the male and female interaction. I find it reprehensible when anyone, gay OR straight, intentionally creates a child without first making a nest that is the best possible scenario for that child. Got news for you, my friend, a lot more straight people (by percentage, as well as real numbers) are creating children w/o the ideal than gays. That being said, it is also reprehensible that good people, whether single or in a commited gay relationship should be prevented from rescuing children that were tragically left w/o good parents to care for them. It is a blessing when anyone who cares can rescue a child from a broken, failing foster care system. I have no problem with adoption law that gives preference to a qualified straight couple over single people and commited gays, but DO NOT prevent children from being rescued because someone is gay.

Posted on February 24, 2012 at 1:01amThe biggest problem with legalizing same sex marriage (there really is no such thing… no phrase in the law) is that if I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman only, and homosexual couples can legally marry, then I will be seen as a bigot. And I’m not a bigot. That’s a problem.

You have tortured logic to come to these various “points” you have attempted to make. The Founders were silent, so unless we can read the minds of people dead for over two hundred years they have no opinion on the matter. Marriage is a matter for state law to define, if state law defines marraige inclusively, than it includes same sex mariage.
The ultimately, there is nothing in the Constitution that prevents consenting adults from entering into committed relationships and the 14th Amendment demands that the states treat their citizens equally. Also the case law, such as the Supreme Court case Loving v. Va. also supports same se x marriage. History is moving towards all citizens being treated equally under the law, bigots like you and other Conservative Christians are nothing more than pebbles in the road and history marches forward.

Posted on February 24, 2012 at 1:50pmYou have a valid point, and that is the real problem with this whole debate. The BIG gay left is pushing their master’s (progressivism) agenda while asking for something reasonable. The entire point of government, or even law, is to protect the rights of the individual. While the left is overstepping by trying to force private institutions and citizens to embrace SSM, the right is equally overstepping by attempting to prevent individuals from enjoying the benefits of a legal contract. I’m not usually a centrist, but on this issue I’m pretty much in the middle. Allow SS couples to share in equal protection under the law, and prevent the gov from imposing any restrictions or demands upon the church. Protect rights, don’t impose values.

Posted on February 23, 2012 at 7:58pmThe problem with gay marriage is simple, you can’t have two men/women procreate. As long as I can remember they have been trying to force their life style down our throat’s even though their sexual practices are repugnant to heterosexuals.
All the discussions about gay relationships center around the rights of people to form relations like married people have but they leave out the details of what that involves. The sex act as performed by gays is anything but normal. I’m sorry but that is the truth.
Bottom line is that gay’s are all about sexual gratification not family and rearing children for the furtherance of the species. So the next time someone ask you if you approve of gay rights stop and think about what they are really asking you to approve of.
They are asking you to approve of, and accept the way they have sex as normal not just the appearance of living like married couples!
I am not unsympathetic to the importance of a loving relationship but gay’s are not the only people who are searching for love others have needs they keep to their self and do not push it on society. This song is for them. http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_11192493

If I’m in public and hold hands, hug, or give a peck on the cheek to another man, I have done nothing offensive – is that “shoving it in your face?” There are plenty of straight people who act in a far more lude fashion in public. You can hate gays or be anti-gay all you like, you can’t do anything about it. NOTHING. The issue in this article is gay marriage, which doesn’t affect you in the slightest. How could you know, and why would you care, if the gay couple walking down the street is legally united? You can take no action against them regardless, so stop making out that gays are the worst thing ever. Don’t condone it if you wish, but if you don’t tolerate it and act against someone gay, you are the one in the wrong.

Posted on February 23, 2012 at 7:58pmWell I guess once all gays can get married in all states, and they get married leaving behind a paper trail, and all kinds of gay people come out of the closet. I guess there will be no question about who the gay people are.

Posted on February 23, 2012 at 8:07pmAnd when there is cameras up everywhere with the ability to identify who people are, I guess it will see gay couples together, and when they use their credit cards in gay bars, they will know who went to a gay bar.
