Gay Voters Angry at Democrats Could Sway Election

CHICAGO (AP) — Kate Coatar is seriously considering voting for Green Party candidates instead of Democrats, whom she normally supports. James Wyatt won’t cast a ballot at all because he no longer trusts anyone to fight for causes important to him.

If Democratic candidates are counting on long-standing support from gay voters to help stave off big losses on Nov. 2, they could be in for a surprise.

Across the country, activists say gay voters are angry — at the lack of progress on issues from eliminating employment discrimination to uncertainty over serving in the military to the economy — and some are choosing to sit out this election or look for other candidates.

President Barack Obama’s hometown of Chicago, with its large, politically and socially active gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, offers a snapshot of what some are calling the “enthusiasm gap” between voters who came out strong for Obama and other Democrats in 2008 and re-energized Republican base voters, including tea party enthusiasts who say they are primed to storm the polls.

It didn‘t help that the controversy over the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for gays erupted less than two weeks before the election, when a judge overturned it, then Obama‘s justice department decided to fight the judge’s decision. On Thursday, the Defense Department declared that “don’t ask, don’t tell” is official policy but set up a new system that could make it tougher to get thrown of the military for being openly gay.

“It‘s all talk and nothing’s happening, and I’m just over it,” said Coatar, 62, a church business manager who said she’s as concerned about health care and homelessness as about gay issues. “I don’t know who to vote for and the election is a week away.”

Wyatt, 35, a maintenance worker at the Center on Halsted, a community center serving Chicago’s GLBT community, said politicians only court gay voters at election time.

“Once they’re elected, they’re not fighting for things like civil unions or same-sex marriage or ending ‘don’t ask, don‘t tell’ because they’re hot-button issues,” said Wyatt, who usually supports Democrats. “We’re just used as a piggyback for them to get into office. It’s absurd.”

Whether or not that’s the case, Wyatt isn’t the only one who feels that way.

And in places like Cook County, Ill., where the gay population represents about 7 percent of voters, that could mean the difference between victory and defeat in some races, said Rick Garcia, director of public policy for Equality Illinois. One of those races is a much-watched and close battle for Obama’s old Senate seat between Democrat Alexi Giannoulias and Republican Mark Kirk.

“If (candidates) can mobilize the gay community and get them out to vote, it could make all the difference in the world in some of these key races,” said Garcia.

But volunteers who’ve been calling the 18,000 or so members of Equality Illinois to urge them to vote have been getting an earful. Many members say they won’t vote or will vote against incumbents, regardless of their party affiliation or stance on gay issues.

This year’s election is a stark contrast to 2008, when the gay community turned out in droves to elect Obama and help Democrats regain control of Congress.

“People were clamoring and very excited about the change that then-candidate Obama promised America,” Garcia said. “Now I see lethargy at best and disgust at worst.”

He said gains won under Obama, including in fighting housing discrimination, have not filtered out to many in the gay community because “the big issues have not appeared to change at all.”

“But change takes time; sometimes it takes a lot of time. A lot of folks just don’t understand that,” said Garcia. “I am older and more seasoned, but most people are very disturbed with the administration … and they’re the hard ones to get out to vote.

“The message is huge: Don’t take us for granted.”

Tracy Baim, publisher of Windy City Times, Chicago’s oldest and largest GLBT newspaper, and author of the new book “Obama and the Gays,” said disappointment is showing up in another way: Some are refusing to donate money to candidates until they see progress, although it’s difficult to gauge how much that has affected fundraising.

A message left Friday with the Democratic National Committee seeking comment was not immediately returned.

But many gay organizations are working hard to get voters to the polls, fearing they could face setbacks if Republicans retake control of Congress. Baim said Democrats and Obama still enjoy widespread support in some parts of the gay community, particularly among African-Americans and Latinos, and she believes the majority still will vote.

“People are disappointed but understand that this really is the best hope for significant change over the next several years,” she said. “But at the same time, the anger is very real.”

Robin McGehee, co-founder and director of the national gay-rights organization GetEQUAL calls the mood among gay voters a “disappointment canyon” but said they have no choice but to go to the polls.

She, however, is refusing to donate to or volunteer for any candidate this year. And members of her group are protesting wherever Obama appears on the campaign trail.

“We can’t not take advantage of the right to vote, but that doesn‘t mean we can’t vote smartly,” said McGehee, of Fresno, Calif. “If I was a leader in the Democratic Party, I would be worried.

“Either we‘re important enough to fight for our equality or we’re worth losing,” ”Right now we‘re being treated like we’re worth losing.”

Don’t let anyone fool you. One-third of us at least, don’t care about gay marriage, serving “openly” or special rights of any kind based on our sexuality.
This might be a shocker to many of you, but a good part of gay people are happy with just living their lives without teaching sexual education to your kids. or rampaging through the streets demanding odd special rights.

You know, though, that the people that do all the screaming, are the ones everyone hears. If you are over the top womens lib or over the top christian or over the top gay or over the top whatever, every body gets judged by what you do because you are the one that gets the attention. I have known alot of gay people who didn’t throw thier sexual preference in my face nor did I throw my heterosexual preference in thiers. Got along just fine, thanks. Why have only 3 steel framed buildings ever collapsed due to fire in history happen on 9/11?
(An office fire does NOT burn hot enough to melt steel, a building CANNOT collapse at free fall speed through the path of greatest resistance)
Why did NORAD stand down for 2 hours? Could people in a cave get them to do this?
(In fact NORAD was running a drill that very morning simulating planes crashing into buildings , and didn’t know if the FAA calls were real or exercise )
Why has the FBI never released a video of the plane hitting the Pentagon?(the 1 video released shows no plane and the wrong time stamp)
WHy did Dick Cheney on June 1,2001 order Donald Rumsfeld to give him full control of NORAD?
(No, time in history had a President or Vice president been in control of NORAD)
What caused Building seven to collapse symmetrically straight down in 7 seconds ? (the NIST report is laughable on this ,and they were forced to admit the building was in freefall)
Why was molten steel running like lava under all 3 World Trade collapses up to weeks after ? (Thermite reaction evidence?)
Why was nano-thermite found in 4 verified dust samples?
Did the elevator renewal project in the towers for 9 months leading up to 9/11 allow access?
Why did it take Bush 411 days to start the investigation?
How could the BBC report that building 7 had collapsed 20 minutes before it did ?
(Reporter Jane Standley reports of the collapse while the building is behind her intact)
Please people do your own research.Your going to have to suspend your disbelief long enough to research the facts about this.I am posting this here to raise questions that the mainstream media will not do for us. Prove me wrong ,please try. God Bless.

As you might have gathered, I prefer the honest, decent and genuinely accepting friends and family I have in the conservative world. We don’t always agree on everything, but isn’t that the point? – being able to be yourself, make choices that best suit you, without fear of punishment or retribution. My friendships and relationships in the conservative world are not predicated on political correctness and enforced conformity of thought. They are based, instead, on mutual respect, honesty and understanding – concepts many modern liberals should consider revisiting.

Glenn Becks new book is great! “When was the last time a poor person created jobs? He also talks about “Frugal: A four letter word” he is spot on as usual with what he says! Rome, Greece, and the 16th Spanish Imposition are models for whats going on in the USA today. We’ve been given the ability to see into the past…greatest gift! I still in the beginning gof the book but.
“A society that seeks to equalize incentives for work doesn’t charish individualism” Glenn Becks book Broke!

I hope the gays realize that their issues are not as important as having a country that is sound and safe. I don’t like the gay lifestyle and that is putting it mildly so I am bias. I don’t hate homosexuals I do not agree with their agenda and their lifestyle. However, I do believe that the goverment should stay out of thier lives and not make them law breakers either. They want the goverment to mandate approval of their lifestyles and agenda and force it upon all of us. The gays know that by laws forcing us to accept their agenda and lifestyle then they can say it is approved by God and is a God given right to be gay. Their god is the goverment, and I fear what will happen if they win. I for one will always disapprove of their lifestyle and if nescessary go to jail for saying so. I don’t care what they do in private and their communities, I don’t have to go there and live amoung them. I do care when they are trying to force their lifestyle upon the country, and make it hate speach if I stand up and say that I disapprove and will not take part in their wickeness.

As a christain chaplain I too tend to be biased in this argument, understand where I volunteer at we have several gay/bi- workers. We all have a simple agreement, they do not shove their views upon my area, and I stay clear of the topic with them. If they wish a discussion (no arguing) at a later time on the bible truths fine…each person is given the power of choice in this world, and will answer for each choice, good or bad, in the next.

Christ said”Judge not, lest ye shall be judged” The Holy Gospel of Saint Matthew 7:1
I try to live my life by these words. My life would never withstand being taken apart and judged piece by piece. I can only hope that, at the end, the good will out-weigh the bad.
I can only assume others, including gays, are hoping the same. Christ has made them our brothers, They should be loved and welcomed.

Everyone needs to wake up and realize that Obama is only supporting what helps his agenda. His agenda is to bring America to its knees as payback for what he thinks America has done to the world.
He benefits if the Republicans win. After November, he can blame them for everything he did to this country so he can try to win in 2012. He could care less about any group of people.

Why have only 3 steel framed buildings ever collapsed due to fire in history happen on 9/11?
(An office fire does NOT burn hot enough to melt steel, a building CANNOT collapse at free
fall speed through the path of greatest resistance)
Why did NORAD stand down for 2 hours? Could people in a cave get them to do this?
(In fact NORAD was running a drill that very morning simulating planes crashing into
buildings , and didn’t know if the FAA calls were real or exercise )
Why has the FBI never released a video of the plane hitting the Pentagon?(the 1 video
released shows no plane and the wrong time stamp)
WHy did Dick Cheney on June 1,2001 order Donald Rumsfeld to give him full control of NORAD?
(No, time in history had a President or Vice president been in control of NORAD)
What caused Building seven to collapse symmetrically straight down in 7 seconds ? (the NIST
report is laughable on this ,and they were forced to admit the building was in freefall)
Please people do your own research.Your going to have to suspend your disbelief long enough
to research the facts about this.I am posting this here to raise questions that the
mainstream media will not do for us. Prove me wrong ,please try. God Bless.

“If (candidates) can mobilize the gay community and get them out to vote, it could make all the difference in the world in some of these key races,” said Garcia.

Or if people just realized their sexual behavior isn’t important to anyone but themselves, they may just vote for people who will give them liberty, small government, and less taxes. Anyone espousing those values will probably just leave everyones bedroom alone.

Gays should vote libertarian if they truly wanted equal treatment. My question is, they make up 1 percent of the population….how much of an influence do they really have? Let’s stop playing the PC game and deal with statistics. The gay vote as a whole is statistically inconsiquent. It plays a role in dead heat, maybe. They are already polled as potential voters. There is no discernable demographic that they are exclusive too. Polling them is simply polling an overlap in potential and or likely voters.

Honestly, as a fiscal conservative but a social Libertarian I would gladly help the gays get what they want as long as it doesn’t raise taxes. I don‘t believe the founding father’s meant to legislate what people do in the bedroom. I honestly wish the right would openly welcome gays and fight for their inalienable rights as American citzens to pursue happiness. If that was all it took to win elections I would gladly legalize gay marriage.

Why object to them? Because of your religious beliefs. I thought we had a separation of church & state in this country.

Think about it – it would make their relationships fiscally stronger and de-burden our courts and private health care administration (because they’d have the same rights as married people). I say bring the gays in and have them vote Republican. On average they are better off financially than the average demographic, they pay taxes and obey the laws – sounds good to me.

As Glenn Beck said “what, do you really think we are going to pass laws against being gay? who are they hurting?”

Did not know that about the military code of justice – thanks for the enlightenment. Appreciate it when something new is able to be learned.

Why does the GOP not welcome them into the tent and give up there war on liberty in the bedroom?

Oh thats right. They only pay lip service to liberty when they aren’t in charge. Hope the new Christian right to take over is enlightened enough to believe in freedom for all and not just the life stiles they approve of.

The gays have America to lose as well as the rest of us. If they allow america to go to hell there will be no acceptance for them anywhere else in the world. The will lose the freedom to chose, or at least to live an openly gay lifestyle. There are very few places on this planet that will accommodate it, (Try living that way under sharia law and you would be beheaded as a defective human.)

I’m not gay and personally I think it is a sin against nature and God. But, I am not them, they are not me and they have the “free will” to make decisions, they will answer to their creator, It is not my place to judge them or their lifestyle unless it interferes with my freedoms and lifestyle of choice. Live and let live. Do not judge me and will not judge you. We can be friends, but if you grab my @$$, you’re gonna get punched in the head.

Gays may just be figuring out what many poor people (that also vote Dem in droves) have not. Democrats do not help anybody! Look at the cities, where the Dem vote comes from mainly. They are run by Dems and were, are and always will be poor under Dem rule. It just doesn’t work and Dems are keeping the poor under their thumbs. Republicans have done more to actaully help the poor (vs. talk about it, or run ineffective programs).

First thing to remember…….the Left is using the Gays the same way they have used minority voters. They care nothing about “gay rights”. They support gays to get their votes, but all they are really interested in is supporting gay rights as a means of population control. Gays are being used to stop ‘humans from destroying the earth’.. Wake up people….do you think Cass Sunstein is interested in you or are you being used.

Today’s Daily Rant Brought to YOU by Fired Up Free Man !

Revolution is in the air! People are tired of the sterile environment enforced upon them by THEIR government. We’re taxed the minute we wake up in the morning till we fall exhausted into our beds at night. There should be no bill passed that doesn’t have the extinction of at least five more laws. The trouble with the drug laws is that as soon as government is given a reason to interfere in privet lives they feel free to insinuate themselves into all aspects of our lives. We are either free or we are NOT. A man’s home used to be his castle instead our politicians have interfered with our CHILDREN, our HOMES, even our PERSONAL lives, it’s time to WAKE UP and fight back! It’s unfortunate that people use drugs, but still it’s none of the governments business. Are we free or are we not? Everybody must be responsible for their own actions. There will be winners and losers but at least this way there are some winners.

Come and add to the daily rant of Fired Up Free Man’s Facebook page!
