GE Brings Government’s New Food Guidelines to Your…Microwave?

It‘s getting harder and harder to ignore the government’s new food guidelines. Case in point: appliance giant General Electric (GE) has introduced new microwaves that have a “MyPlate.gov“ button ”to help create healthy meals,” according to Business Wire.
The change took place in September for 1.9 and 2.1 capacity over-the-range microwaves, and GE is advertising the new appliances on its website. The button allows consumers to easily cook foods found in the government’s new dietary guidelines, which is now visualized using a plate instead of the classic food pyramid. The GE website simply says, “5 food groups, 19 foods and 44 pre-programmed food combinations assist in healthy meal preparation.”
Business Wire explains how it works:
For example, consumers can use GE’s MyPlate feature to select a preset for cooking specific vegetables, such as fresh asparagus, frozen green beans, or numerous other options in each USDA MyPlate category – fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.
GE even has a video to help visualize the new feature:
“Our goal with the MyPlate feature is to give consumers an easy way to choose and tastefully cook foods that are healthier for them, using graphics and instructions that are easy to understand,” Susan Gregory, product manager for GE microwaves, told Business Wire. “Providing quality cooked food for a wide range of items is a huge part of the MyPlate feature.”
According to Business Wire, GE “worked closely with the USDA to ensure the MyPlate feature in their cooking products is in step with dietary recommendations.” But that may not be surprising. GE has long had a cozy relationship with the Obama administration. GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt, for example, is the president of Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.
In the past, GE has received a greenhouse gas exemption and Citizens for Tax Justice points out the company pays some of the lowest taxes.
For some, that might just push their buttons.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 9:51amCompletely insane. What company leadership would approve this? A .gov button on a freakin’ microwave? Really??? By the way, I never use a microwave to “cook” or heat up anything. Microwave-able food isn’t exactly the healthiest way to eat.
I stopped buying GE products years ago about the time I stopped watching NBC. What kind of business plan do they have to pfff off the people that actually have the money to buy their product?

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 12:55pmNot run by a communist but a Italian(Mussolini)model fascist .Any bets on how many microwaves with this feature are going to be sold to schools ,hospitals, nursing homes, etc due to some govt. mandate from HHS via regulations concerning the preparation of balanced diets . Remember regulations & rules are not laws but have the power of laws , also remember that the CEO of GE is working hand in glove with Obama. So you will have a manufacturer of microwave ovens working hand in glove with the govt. regulators to get a mandate to purchase a product that they are the sole manufacturer of & thus have a monopoly . Ain’t fascism great(sarcasm.).

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 1:33pmI will NEVER buy anything GE again .. my kitchen is GE and as those appliances need to be replaced they will be replaced by another brand .. they care NOTHING about the consumer .. I had a dishwasher with auto detergent where you fill it and then it automatically dispenses (for about a month) when the Government required changes in the liquid dishwasher detergent we were NOT warned that it would ruin this feature .. GE and Cascade did not put any notice out to consumers .. when we put the new formula in the dishwasher it RUINED this feature … there was a way to clean it out of the old product and then use the new but NO ONE TOLD US .. and they will not stand by and make repairs to the dishwashers .. NEVER AGAIN>>>> anti – American Marxist none taxpaying creeps!

While “MyPlate” was a big improvement on their useless food pyramid (heavily influenced by the food industry), it still has its problems. I’d rather do my own research and then choose to accept (or reject) what I’ve learned and incorporate them into my eating habits.

Report Post »It burns my arse that GE has not paid taxes because of the political kickback. So, how do we repay this? By giving the CEO a high level job in the White House. Posted on October 3, 2011 at 11:50amThe reason for the wind machines, (that don’t really work that well) is because GE is building them and selling them at a huge cost to us. That’s why Obama said, “we’re going to start paying higher rates for electricity” and he meant it. That‘s why he’s in bed with Immelt, and what does he do? He sends enough jobs to China to keep us unemployed.
Report Post »Our EPA is not to be trusted. They fined an oil company for killing 27 birds, while the wind machines have killed over 400,000 per year including our protected Eagles. What good is the EPA except to go against employment for thousands while he protects the GE debacle? Kinda like the endangered fishies so they shut down irrigation water to our farmers in Calif. and we’re paying more from food from Mexico with questionable growing qualities.
If Michell O knew so much about food, why doesn’t it show on her body? Another sham.

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 8:05amWe can call it the obama button. I will make it a goal never to buy another GE product. I guess GE thinks people are too stupid to read the directions book, a cookbook, the regular settings on the microwave, or the directions printed on bags and boxes of frozen veggies. That may be true of Obama voters, but I consider it an insult to my intelligence. I expect any day now we will find directions printed on each square of toilet paper telling us the recommended number of time a day we should go to the bathroom and the recommended number of squares of toilet paper we should use to protect the environment (yes, I remember some celebrity already did this once.).

Posted on October 3, 2011 at 7:59amWell, I won’t be buying a GE microwave. I GE is catering to Obama voters who aren’t smart enough to be able to read the directions in a cook book or on a bag of frozen vegetables or in the cookbook that comes with most microwaves or on the other cooking settings on the microwave to know how to cook the veggies or a dinner plate with foods from several groups. I, for one, can figure out how to do that without a “My plate.gov” and resent the implications of the government even infringing on my cooking. Am I over-reacting? I expect to have a “my bathroom.gov” imprinted on the toilet paper soon to tell me when to go to the bathroom and how much paper to use (yes, I remember that some celebrity already tried to do this..
