Geithner to Ryan: White House Has No ‘Definitive Solution’ to Debt Crisis…And We Don’t Want Yours

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House Budget Committee Thursday that President Obama’s fiscal year 2013 budget – “the most expensive in United States history” – would “put the U.S. on an ‘unsustainable’ course if enacted,” reports The Washington Free Beacon.

Geithner also told Committee chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) that although the Obama administration doesn’t have a “definitive solution” to the debt crisis, it definitely knows it doesn’t like the Republican alternative.

“Leaders are supposed to fix problems. We have a $99.4 trillion unfunded liability. Our government is making promises to Americans that it has no way of accounting for. And so you’re saying, yeah, we’re stabilizing it but we’re not fixing it in the long run. That means that we’re just going to keep lying to people,” Rep. Paul Ryan said.

“We’re going to keep all these empty promises going … You’re showing that you have no plan to get this debt under control. You’re saying we’ll stabilize it but then it’s just going to shoot back up. And so my argument is, that’s Europe. That is bringing us toward a European debt crisis,” he added.

“What our budget does is get our deficits down to a sustainable path over the budget window. Why do they take off again? Why do they do that?” Treasury Secretary Geithner  asked.

“Because we got 10,000 people retiring every day, and healthcare costs going up–” Rep. Ryan responded.

“That’s right. We have millions of Americans retiring every day, and that will drive substantially the rate of growth of healthcare costs. You are right to say we’re not coming before you today to say we have a definitive solution to that long-term problem. What we do know is, we don’t like yours [emphasis added],” Geithner said.

Why would Geithner say something like that? That is, why would he openly admit that even though the White House has no solution of its own, it refuses to consider a Republican plan?

Business Insider posits that Geithner may have reached a point in his career where, for a lack of better words, he simply “doesn’t give a $%&.”

For instance, while being questioned over the President’s budget by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Geithner was “unflappable,” and mostly “just laughed at Chaffetz the whole time.”

What’s going on here? Business Insider has three theories:

One is that Geithner knows his job is almost over. He’ll be gone after the election, full stop. He can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Two is that Geithner has just gotten better at talking. We noted last September how much better Geithner was sounding.

And three, Geithner maybe feels like the administration is winning. The economy is improving. Administration ratings are going up and so on. Finally, he’s feeling good.

All reasonable positions. Indeed, when Geithner first started working for the Obama administration, he seemed nervous, flummoxed, and downright uncomfortable in front of cameras. He definitely seems more confident.

And maybe he believes that the current administration is winning. Maybe he believes all of its economic and political goals are being achieved.

But is it really that?

Given the fact that it has gotten to the point where Geithner is openly admitting that the White House has no “definitive solution” to the debt crisis, and that he’s most likely on his way out anyway, the real reason for his jovial frankness in front of the House Budget Committee might be because, well, he doesn’t’ give a “$%&.”

      Come on…Obama’s never been serious about cutting spending and lowering the deficit. He never has and his latest faux budget is just another insult to the American people. More rosier than rosy budget and economic predictions from the administration that gave you “if you pass this stimulus, unemployment won’t go over 8%”. More gimmicks and tricks like counting the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as spending cuts then moving that “money” somewhere else when in fact the wars are on borrowed money. And by the way…when has Geithner ever been right about anything? He’s a laughing stock. He was a laughing stock and Goldman Sachs and he’s a bigger laughing stock as Treasury Secretary…he had a Chinese audience literally laugh at him when he assured them American debt was safe.

      Would someone please post a link to the Republican plan? I haven’t seen it. I‘m not saying it doesn’t exist. I am just saying I haven’t seen it. Post the link please please so that we can all examine it. I’m interested in the “Republican Plan.“ Maybe you too stupid to find a link to the ”Republican Plan.” But if you are really smart and want a big star, you’ll post the “Republican plan” here for all of us too see and evaluate.

      Warning! To qualify as an answer, the Plan has to specify what government programs the Plan will cut.

      Maybe in fact you are too stupid and unable to find the “Fiscally Sustainable” Republican Proposal, which is no surprise to those who have read your other posts. If you’re a big boy, look up the Republican Proposal yourself. You’re the only liberal yet I’ve heard claiming to have not seen a plan. However, maybe you could tell us how liberals have demonized a “sustainable” plan that they haven’t seen.

      On a side note, at least the president’s budget can only get more support than his last one, the one that no democrats voted in favor of.

    Geithner wants out. He wants to leave an untenable position and Obama has pressured him to stay; he has said he’d be happy to be fired. Trouble is, his next gig might not be easy to come by. He’s a tax cheat and none of his excuses holds water. He knew what his tax bill was because his offshore employer gave him the money to cover it. He just didn’t bother giving it to the IRS. So Timmy wants to leave and doesn’t much care what he says these days.

    If the White House knew how to keep a good and honest set of books, they would know to the penny how much over the years have been paid into Social Security and Medicare. Also how much has been withdrawn. Was there anyone dipping into individual accounts for some other purpose? Why is the president trying to spend money that is not approved whether for investments or other expenses and then wants to have more of a huge overdraft in all accounts and things such as roads and bridges that each state knows their own needs. Stick to America’s security as no #1 issue.

    No what is happening here is option four:

    The budget battle will set the stage for the debt battle coming just before the elections; right now the left is spinning the election on social values, then when this fabricated crisis comes up the propaganda windmills of the left will slam the news across the headlines constantly of a crisis being caused by the conservatives and make Obama appear to be the only one with a viable solution even though he caused it.

    Look for Obama to decide on his own at that time to raise the debt limit on his own alleged authority; recall the near Constitutional crisis a few months back on the last debt ceiling increase? Same basis will happen here; if he gets away with it end game.

      You are correct. I heard Paul Ryan on the Hannity radio show last week, and his best guess for total meltdown was 2 years. 2 YEARS! That will be here before we know if it happens. Someone tell me why DC doesn’t care about us? I already know about the power grab, NWO, puppet master, etc theories, but you‘d think someone with even a small ounce of concern wouldn’t dream of hurting her own people diliberatley.     Here’s the problem. The administration and the democrats are manipulating numbers, and down-right lying to the people. The slime-stream press is working with the administration to fully push this agenda down the throats of all Americans. Why? In order to get their poll numbers up, and people start thinking that OBama is better than any Republican contender. So OBama wins the November election. Unless the American people start recognizing the truth by opening their eyes and ears, OBama will win the November election. We all need to get mobilized, we need to get energized, and we need to get involved. I guarantee the left is, and we need to beat them at their game no matter how much they fight back.       It’s deeper than this,both parties are guilty of our debt my friend and nobody is going to do nothing about it because they don’t want the problems Greece have. So we will continue going down this path and we will all pay for it through inflation,kids not even born yet are going to be paying for this fiasco.

      DANIEL & FIDEL1234, what you both say is true, but it goes deeper still. We are not only on an unsustainable path, but we have crossed the point of No Return, meaning we are going to have to pay the piper regardless of whether Obama wins or not in Nov. 2012. The ramifications of kicking the can down the road are already upon us. The only question is, “How badly are we soon going to be engulfed by major economic disaster?” At lest 98% of the American people neither comprehend the magnitude nor the extent of the economic tsunami that is about to be unleashed upon the American people. Some of those in leadership do understand the looming economic collapse but are afraid to tell the American people.

      The tragedy and the treachery is that some know and have been a part of the unleashing of this destructive plan because it is a part of the globalist scheme to turn this nation into a third world banana republic. This is most diabolical and these ones, headed by Barack Hussein Obama and his cohorts in crime, should be rounded up and tried for treason, receiving the ultimate punishment.

      This is treason from within, carried out by liars and deceivers, and just as deadly and pervasive as any killing plague that could have been unleashed to destroy a people of a once free nation.

      Since there appears to be no one within the government willing to rise up to contend and defeat this tyranny, it will take both the mustering of forces from without and a resolve to do their duty.

      you are so full of crap Philliesphan I don’t know where to begin. I am a Republican, I support the right of a Catholic institution, where birth control is against their doctrine from having to provide it. That is not banning contraception, that is not supplying it. Members who want to go against church teachings or non-Catholics will just have to go somewhere else to get their fix. Insurance companies ban things all the time, so don‘t give me this is a women’s right issue. As I woman, that this a load of crap.

      Apparently, they want the entire population to spend all their time copulating. The Government will handout all the birthcontrol you can use, and will do taxpayer funded abortions for those slipping through. This has to be the first administration pushing sex. And pushing birth control. And pushing abortions. What could the reason be., Possibly to take people’s eye off what they are really doing to us. Other than that, it just doesn’t make any sense at all. It is not about women’s health as all of the above have been available for about 4-5 decades now.

      Then there are the school lunch nazi’s. It’s not about nutritious lunches as chicken nuggets fall very short of a turkey & cheese sandwich, banana, chips, and apple juice. It’s about CONTROL. They are stealing the minds of your/our kids knowing the bodies will come right along with the minds.

      IT IS TIME TO FIGHT BACK. Check what’s going on at your schools. Attend Board of Ed meetings. They work for you. Your taxes are their paychecks. If that fails, HOME SCHOOL. Pair up with friends and group SCHOOL AT HOME.
