Genealogists’ Shock Claim: Obama Is Likely a Descendant of the First American Slave (Through His Mother!)

This week, genealogists have come out with a shocking claim — that President Barack Obama is likely a descendant of John Punch, the first documented American slave. According to Ancestry.com, the nation’s first black president is potentially Punch’s 11th great-grandson.

As NPR notes, this first informational tidbit is shocking enough in itself, but the story doesn’t end there. To add to the intrigue, Obama‘s connection to America’s first slave comes through his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, who was caucasian. The New York Times has more about Punch’s past history:

In 1640, Mr. Punch, then an indentured servant, escaped from Virginia and went to Maryland. He was captured there and, along with two white servants who had also escaped, was put on trial. His punishment — servitude for life — was harsher than what the white servants received, and it has led some historians to regard him as the first African to be legally sanctioned as a slave, years before Virginia adopted laws allowing slavery.

Historians say there was a trade in human labor, of both whites and blacks, during this period in American history. There were also some free African-Americans. Beginning around 1617, indentured servants were bought and sold, as were debtors, in the Chesapeake Bay region, said Ira Berlin, a University of Maryland professor and expert in the history of slavery. But while those people were in an “unfree condition,” he said, historians cannot pinpoint a date for the beginning of the slave trade.

Interestingly, Obama‘s status and Punch’s past historical context create a fascinating picture, especially if the connection is legitimate.

“Two of the most historically significant African Americans in the history of our country are amazingly directly related,” Ancestry.com genealogist Joseph Shumway said in a statement. ”John Punch was more than likely the genesis of legalized slavery in America. But after centuries of suffering, the Civil War, and decades of civil rights efforts, his 11th great-grandson became the leader of the free world and the ultimate realization of the American Dream.”

While genealogists told The New York Times that the study is accurate, it can’t be determined with full-proof certainty that Obama is Punch’s relative, because the paper trail doesn’t reach back far enough. Still, DNA evidence seems to corroborate the connection. Based on the attained information, Obama’s mother was tied to African ancestors. Then, to further advance the connection, experts looked at marriage and property records to the time and place where Punch resided, NPR reports.

A press release from Ancestry.com provides more information about the research:

The discovery is the result of years of research by Ancestry.com genealogists who, through early Virginia records and DNA analysis, linked Obama to John Punch. An indentured servant in Colonial Virginia, Punch was punished for trying to escape his servitude in 1640 by being enslaved for life. This marked the first actual documented case of slavery for life in the colonies, occurring decades before initial slavery laws were enacted in Virginia.

In the 372 years since, many significant records have been lost – a common problem for early Virginia (and the South in general) – destroyed over time by floods, fires and war. While this reality greatly challenged the research project, Ancestry.com genealogists were able to make the connection, starting with Obama’s family tree.

The documents have been published on the Ancestry.com web site and are entitled, “Obama-Bunch Key Documents.” You can read the Times piece for more extensive information on the alleged connection.

      So according to ancestry.com claims, Obama’s branch from the first slave was the “white” branch that would have belonged to the plantation owners. This would obviously mean that for generations, Obama’s ancestors were the original slave owners until Abe Lincoln, a Republican, came in and put an end to slavery.

      This research is based on conjecture, which Ancestry.com conveniently labels “negative disprove.” BUT as Carl Sagan noted, “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.” Here’s an example:

      => “Studying and understanding the chronology of John Bunch II and Paul Bunch is critical in reducing the number of candidates who MIGHT be their father and discovering the identity of the original Bunch progenitor.” (emphasis added)

      Ancestry.com contends that doKumented evidence is not required:

      => “Negative disproof” means eliminating or disproving alternative hypotheses, often based on the argument of what DOES NOT occur in a record. Conclusions about the Colonial South are often reached by building cases from a body of evidence, rather than finding one doKument [spelling edited] that conveniently ‘proves’ a point.” (emphasis added)

      Notice that scientific rigor is depreciated by their use of the phrase “conveniently ‘proves,’ ” in reference to doKumented evidence. This is convoluted BS, folks.

Besides, since the name slave comes from Slav because of the number of those people the Romans enslaved, I doubt Mr. Oboma can be descended from the “first” slave.

      CNN just did a story on this and the Ancestry.com lady said that the birth records were destroyed in the Civil War so they “used” other records like Church and land owner records. Too freaking funny!

      Umm…Blaze…you’re doing it wrong again.

      Definition of “decedent” is ‘a person who has died.’.

      I think you meant to use the word “descendant”.

      Other than that, I liked this article. It shows Obama’s desperation to hold onto the presidency. I dont believe the genealogists “research”. Faking a genealogical history is probably easier than faking a more recent birth certificate.

      If his relative was the 1st slave, it was his own people who captured him and sold him to the slave traders. Slaves were used all over the world, but America get the shaft. We all know the blacks in America have had a better life than the majority of them in Africa.

Se was “assigned” to them by fellow travelers higher in hierarchy and all the stuff before 1948 (actually, not much of it, there is a sheer paucity of any data, except alleged birth date/place) was simply made up and greased through.

      I’ve dabbled a bit in genealogy tracing my own family history. If they can trace his family history back to the first slave (supposedly) they certainly should be able to tell which country he was born in. Of course, his fake birth certificate says Hawaii, but shouldn’t the genealogists be able to figure out whether or not that was even possible my looking at various passenger lists?

    Since verifiable DNA must be present in the male descendant, the DNA of the original Mr. Punch must be used as the control. Otherwise any claim of “DNA’ match is just communist spin.

    Same B.S. as the Jefferson descendant myth. DNA tests proved he did not sire males through his slave.

      Just a word of caution about the spelling of the surnames Punch/Bunch. As an amatuer genealogist, I’ve spent significant time with old records, including those from the 1600′s. The scribe who wrote the record may have spelled it incorrectly, since P and B sound very similar. Or the original scribe spelled it correctly and a subsequent transcription mis-read it. Unlike the French, the English did not codify their spelling until much later and here in America, Noah Webster’s Blue Backed Speller and his Dictionary helped move that forward. But that was much later in history. I do not believe that this was an attempt by anyone to pass off a false genealogical line.

      Names often change. My father in law changed his first name, and the spelling of his last name. My own name has changed four times. While things like this are confusing, they are also common. I would not read anything political into the early portion of the genealogy.

      The scary part for me is the attempt to link B.O. to our earliest history.

      Hi MONK, Dang, you’re right. That was John Casar. I knew that it was Anthony Johnson who actually did own the first black slave, but he did begin his servitude as an indentured servant. He and two white servants escaped from Johnson and were later recovered. The two white servants received more time as servants in court, but Casan was ordered to serve the rest of his life to Johnson making him the actual first black slave in the Americas. When I attempted to look up John Punch to see if he was Johnson’s slave, all that I found were one story after another regarding 0bama. Thanks for that correction. Punch must have been the first black brought to this country as a slave from the beginning.
