Billionaire Filmmaker George Lucas: I‘m an ’Ardent Believer in Democracy, not Capitalist Democracy’

The following is an interview with the iconic, and, unabashedly liberal filmmaker George Lucas with CBS’ Charlie Rose. Lucas, who is of course best known for “Star Wars,” delved into a wide-range of topics, from his anti-Capitalist politics to his latest movie about the Tuskegee Airmen titled, “Red Tails.”
The Indiana Jones creator offered his unsympathetic views on capitalism and “the media,” while Rose pressed the filmmaker to acknowledge that Lucas himself is part of that very media, and that through filmmaking he has the power to deliver to the masses, any political narrative he likes.
Lucas suggested that he holds no such power.
In explaining the origins of his left-wing ideologies, Lucas stated:
“I grew up in the ’60s. I grew up in San Francisco. And so I’m informed in a certain kind of way about, you know, believing in democracy and believing in America. And I’m a very ardent patriot. But I’m also a very ardent believer in democracy, not capitalist democracy. And I do not believe that the rich should be able to buy the government. And that’s just the way I feel.”
“Is that the America you see, where the rich have bought the government?” asked Rose.
Lucas replied, “Oh, come on. It’s been that way for a long time.”
“And it’s just — you know, it’s — it’s not right. And — and it’s not gonna work…”
When asked if he believed things would change, the veteran filmmaker said, “Well, I hope it changes.”
He added, “I mean, it’s hard, because you got human nature. You got people — you know, basically, it’s all — we got a country based on greed. And as long as you got that, then it’s corrupt. And as long as it’s corrupt, you’re never gonna get a real meeting of the minds on what is best for…”
How Lucas reconciles his success against his anti-capitalist viewpoints, when capitalism is arguably the very vehicle by which he was able to attain that success and touch the world with his movies, he did not explain.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 11:39pmSince Mr. Lucas does not like capitalism, I do not need to spend any more of my hard earned money on any movie that he has a part in creating. These Hollywood elite hate this system so much but will not give all that they have with their possessions and money. Until they give everything away and dedicate their lives to a vow of poverty then they should SHUT THE HELL UP! Go to hell and burn all of you money Mr. Lucas.

George Lucas in the ’90s-2000′s–….Made 3 horrific (dialogue-wise..did he write them in a day??) films and didn’t care because of MERCHANDISING…people will flock to spend money on him the good ‘ol capitalistic way. And then bash conservatives for his success.
Moral to the story, liberals are nuts. If the movie industry was state controlled, then all his money would go to the government to build more turtle tunnels.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 1:50amMr Lucas and his ilk should strap a set on, put their money where their mouths are and live much simpler, humbler lives. All the Hollywood ‘bleeding hearts’ that love TO NOT admit that they absolutely love their money, fame, attention, perks etc. should be giving up their wealth to the people who ‘actually’ deserve it; and live the life they think those beneath them should live. It’s not hard! Sell or donate your ranches, planes, suv’s, mansions and shut the f up and simply do what you proclaim is the right thing. Strap a set on an do it.

Some voters are swayed more by marketing than reason.
Lucas doesn’t like the result.
So his conclusion is that “the rich buy the government.”
I’m not sure I follow his logic.
But as he said, he‘s a child of ’60′s San Francisco.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 4:06amGeorge Lucas hasn’t gotten any more of my money since I saw Episode 1 and realized that he sucked as a Director (I afterwards found out that the best Star Wars movie wasn’t directed by him anyway).
But, as for the rich purchasing the elections I wonder if he feels hypocritical since he personally donated:
$30,400 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2010
$33,100 to the Obama Victory Fund in 2008
$4,600 to Obama for America in 2008
$28,500 to the DNC in 2008
Certainly donated more than the majority of Americans, but it’s ok – he’s fighting the horrible people that are trying to buy America, right?

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 6:17amIt is hard to understand why the opinions of the Hollywood elite are continually given so much air time. Lucas’s youth in the 1960s, his San Francisco upbringing, and his career in film are hardly credentials that provide him with any special insight. No one argues with his statement that the rich should not be able to buy the government, but Hollywood’s hypocrisy on this is plain to see. Not that she’s the only one involved, but Daryl Hannah has recently been hyper-vocal against the Keystone Pipeline. And there is no shortage of Hollywood activists – Penn, Sheen, Baldwin, Clooney, Sarandon, etc.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 9:06amThe problem is that the word Capitalism has been defined wrong. People look at the system that we have here in the US and call it capitalism. Capitalism is not public bailouts or public funding for green energy. Capitalism is the ability to enter into free trade with your fellow citizens. No one forces you to buy a certain product and no one forces you to help start a business or share the losses. This is “state capitalism” or “crony capitalism” which is just a few steps removed from socialism, fascism or feudalism. I believe that really is the direction we are moving, back to feudalism. The rich will own the land and rent it to the rest of us. The central government will give us money to “buy” things from the rich and when the peasants try and innovate to get a better living, the rich with the backing of the government will be there to stop us. Capitalism isn’t perfect but it is better than swearing allegiance to a lord, ask those old white guys that lived in 1776.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 9:12amMr. Lucas is simply very confused in regards to Capitalism. The issues he described that he is againts are not Capitalist ideas but Corporatism ideas. Nowhere in Capitalism does it say that business should be able to buy politicians. People seem to think we have a true Capitalist system here and point out all the problems they see and say “Capitalism is bad” when the truth is all the problems they see are not Capitalism. Now Capitalism isn’t perfect but it is the best system IMO.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 11:39pmI think that many of the commentors here are missing the issue. First, the interviewer is really biased and is a social justice creep. Secondly, we do not have capitalism in the USA anymore so George Lucas is correct to that point. What we have is crony capitalism which has nothing to do with the free market and true capitalism. The only real supporter of capitalism in the Presidental election is Ron Paul.
Ayn Rand spelled it all out over 50 years ago. We are witnessing what happens when one allows the government to run our lives; people will naturally want to game the system for their own benefit. So the solution is to take away the government’s power to run our lives. That is what Star Wars was about: Fighting the Imperials like we my ancestors did in the 1770′s.
We MUST reduce the size and scope of government to realize the gains that capitalism brings.

I have nothing against charity .. but it seems that the rich liberals expect everyone but them to pay.

He’s as idiotic as the entertainment industry that has battled and eroded belief in the free market system via “big ____ profits” subliminal arguments in movies, songs, etc..You know, the same entertainment industry filing lawsuits against media uploaders for cutting in on their profits.
No, they don’t hate greed. Their idea of greed constitutes everyone else. When it’s their “art”, it’s all good man. More $$$$$$$.
The contradiction is astounding.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 11:13pmI agree .. with the movie prices .. they are out of what most people can afford to pay to take a family .. I haven’t been to one in YEARS .. want to see “One for the Money” (I have read all the books) .. but will most likely wait for it to come out on video . You would think that Hollywood and the stars and the producers, directors .. etc would understand and cut what they DEMAND to make. Where is the “shared” sacrifice? .. not in Hollyweird that is for certain.
